Thank you so much I wanted to show my grandson how to make a whistle and what did he want a flute lol so Thanks so much for all your time not to mention a awesome flute and quality time with my grandson learning a great skill
What a difference.......I could not wait till this morning to make my flutes into what I had struggled to make sound good. I will always do this to the flutes I make. .......Once again, thank you sooooooo much.
Charlie, thank you. This is the best explanation I have seen on the relationship of the block edge and the splitting edge. It gives me hope for some of my poorly voiced flutes.
Thanks Charlie, now I have to go and fix all the flutes I have been working on, ha ha ha. You do make it easier every time you do a video like this. Thank you again. Tom
Fantastic info, I was concerned about attempting that bevel on the end of the track on some of my problematic flutes because I wasn't sure I was thinking about it correctly. I noticed placing my finger right on the edge of the block would fix some of the overblow and drop the tone, combination of block and track bevel should fix it right up! Thank you!!!
@@BlueBearFlutes These techniques saved two flutes that I thought for sure were a lost cause! Learning a lot by going back over my old mistakes and fixing them. I get upset when I mess up a nice piece of material.
Good info, I will give it a try on the flute I am working on now. I have noticed that the sound was a bit off, this just may do the trick. I will sure try it.
I am very new at flute making and love your tips. However, while doing the 2 bevels has cleared the sound, but still, the top octave finger hole is almost a step sharp. How can I fix this? It is exactly the same as 2 others I did - hole size and placement, even sound the same key, being all in A, but that top note sound on this 3rd flute is off. What can I do and what could have gone wrong? Thank you so much
You may have to fill the hole and re-size to what you need it to be in tune. It could be different because of the size in diameter difference between this flute and your others. I would have to see a picture of it to be certain. You can send it to my email address bluebear@bluebearflutes.com.
Thnk you so much brother, i was curious, maybe you could make a video on your favorite flutes and your flute collection? Thank you my friend and blessings to you and your family. Mitakuye Oyasin
Again, excellent advice. I wonder if the effects can be visual if you blow smoke into the instrument and have the camera focused on the block where the air flows. (choose your smoke carefully). Central Florida THANKS FOR THINKING!
Hi Charlie, thank you so much for sharing your time; would you say that having a bigger block produces a bigger sound or it has minimal change of volume of flute?
Thank you for this video I've been looking for this info all day I made a hammered copper flute its beautiful only problem is it sounds like its worth $1 and I can't seem to get it to sound right but im going to try to did it now that I found this vid
• When trying to make the 20 flutes ive attempted I seem to ALWAYS screw up making this area. I can't seem to make the track so it has a channel for the air to travel through. Do you have a video that details how to get this right, ie the depth and length of the track, where the best place to place the air holes is? If you don't have one would you be willing to make a video that goes into great detail how to make this area. Thank you for making all the videos you've made so far because they are great and I look forward to your future videos.
I have two questions: 1) How to calculate the distance to sanding the structure where the holes of the flute will be made? Since there are several different flutes and each one has a specific distance from the structure where the blow holes and the toten are located. 2) Is there any calculation to know the distances of the notes holes in the flute? Taking into account its overall length. thank you
Just wanted to thank you for the awesomeness! Just made my first bamboo flute...it has a faint sound, then I made my second (back to back) and it is louder but whistles if I don't blow hard, any ideas on a fix lol. P.S. I used a razor knife, drill, and wood putty. As the block I shaved a piece of bamboo and also used it for kind of a reed to get the flat surface.... Initially I drilled through the center, thats why I used the wood putty lmao.
Hi Charlie! I had a question regarding the distance between the mouth end to the air intake hole, and then the distance between the air intake hole and whistle hole. Does this change with different notes, lengths and bore diameters or is it a constant? Ive been making those holes 2.25"(air intake) and 3"(whistle hole) from the mouth end. So I have a 3/4" long track, seems to work fine so far for G#4's and F#4's but again just wondering if this changes or you know a better measurement to use? If you have a video on it could you send me the link? Thank you!
Hey great question! I have been looking for the video where I answer it more articulately. Concern about the size of the air chamber and the distance from the air hole to the sound hole are relative. Honestly, those are the least important measurements on the flute and typically fluctuate from maker to maker, not flute to flute.😄
@@BlueBearFlutes Oic very interesting! Thats good to know, I guess since what I'm doing currently works I'll leave it how it is, thank you for the info 🙏🏼😊
Do you have any videos that show how to actually make the entire flute? All the videos I’ve seen only show bits and pieces of improving the sound, how to play, etc., rather than how to make a flute...I assume because you think we already know mainly how to make one.🤔 I.e., what size are the holes; how many; how far apart; how to make the part that produces the sound (whatever that’s called), etc. I would appreciate a video that explains it all. Thank you.

I have recently started playing and making Native American flutes and have noticed that some makers put the track on the bottom of the block, while some put it in the flute. Is there a reason for the difference?
one is a woondlands style and the other a plains style... two methods to achieve the same results (at least that is my understanding of it and how it is usually represented... whether it is truly historically accurate ~shrugs)
To produce the cleanest tone, the edges of the track need to be abrupt and uniform. Misshapen track edges produce such turbulences and are 9 out of 10 of the reasons new flute maker's flutes don't play properly.
Hi Charlie, thank you so much for sharing your time; would you say that having a bigger block produces a bigger sound or it has minimal change of volume of flute?
That's a great question! A larger block will not make the flute louder, however a larger sound hole will. There are other things that a larger sound hole will do as well including affect the tone quality. There is a happy medium and that's where I try to land. Remember, loud isn't everything.
