  • www.imdb.com/title/tt0035157/ - Singing is Lynn Bari. I wonder just how Ray Eberle felt that this actress came in and ripped his song off for the movie!

I was brought up listening to the Glenn Miller orchestra. Dad was in the Navy in 42' mum a factory girl in war production, both loved this music and it rubbed of on me. Still remember them dancing to it like they were still young.

This is my favorite song, and one of my favorite movies. My mother was in her 20s in the 40s, but she loved everything modern. As a child I used to get caught sneaking up in the middle of the night to watch these old black-and-white movies. I love everything to do with this time. Mother always said that I should’ve been born when she was in vice versa, lol

Music was so beautiful in this era. I wasn't born yet but my mother was really into popular music from the 40s and I grew up listening to this music.

Ooh I loved this film so romantic , I wanted to be Ann Rutherford and always had same hairstyles & did date trumpeter but he didn't look like George Montgomery(a bit like Robert Mitchum though)I just lived for Hollywood movies & am so grateful that at the age of 83 I can still see scenes from them

The original 1942 RCA Victor recording (78rpm, 27935-A) by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra featured vocalist Ray Eberle (1919 - 1979) with backing vocals by The Modernaires (Paula Kelly, Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein, Ralph Brewster and Bill Conway). This record was the year's eleventh-bestselling recording in the United States according to Billboard magazine, after having spent fifteen weeks on the Billboard charts.

This version of the song is shorter than the original soundtrack recording, which featured a "mysterioso" passage [arranged by Billy May] before the song began, and a chorus by Ray Eberle AFTER Pat Friday's vocal (again singing off-screen for Lynn Bari), followed by an extended instrumental passage before Lynn's final "vocal". The planned extended sequence of this number, featuring Bari AND Eberle, was scuttled before it was filmed.

Thanx so much, Gregory May!...for sharing one of the great band leaders of my parent's era but I so enjoy as if I were there!...ahahha...Love Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Bassie and many other big band sounds, which are seldom aired anymore. This was one of my faves by GM...love the 'lazy horns' and warm overtones along with the wonderful singing.....BRAVO!!

Es la voz maravillosa de Pat Friday. No existe una música mejor que la era de las "big bands".

To Gregory May: Lynn Bari didn't rip this or "At Last" from Ray Eberle. She came in and did the job she was assigned to, as a 20th Century-Fox contact player of long and esteemed standing. And, I might add, she did it beautifully.

yes, lynn, was dubbed but she was still fabulous for this number and for 'at last." also, glenn miller said that lynn's voice was terrific and doesn't understand why they dubbed her. he said she could have sang with his band anytime.

    • @D.ScottCalhoun

@@JeryTillotson123 Dubbed by Pat Friday. MGM did this with Eleanor Powell in her first few movies despite the fact that she was on Broadway, the radio and had made records with Tommy Dorsey.

Lynn Bari defines the word, sexy. I'm sure today's females could take a lesson from her on how to be classy and sexy at the same time. She was talented, too.

Yes, she does a good lip-sync, but note that it is vocalist Pat Friday's voice you actually hear, dubbed for Miss Bari in all of her numbers here.

according to the pedia of the wiki, the song was written for the movie, and though Lynn Bari is the face on the screen, the voice is that of Pat Friday.
The GM orchestra later released the song with Ray Eberle singing the lead.
it seems the only consistent vocalists are the Modernaires

I'm pleased to hear that, 'gregory'. At least you have an idea of what the number was SUPPOSED to be, on screen. Shortly after production of the film was completed, in June 1942, Glenn fired Ray, for several reasons [Skip Nelson replaced him].

Probably because Ray was full of himself and had none of the talent or humility of his brother Bob

Lynn Bari was lip syncing. The singer was Pat Friday. Lynn Bari had a weak voice, so they subbed it with a power house of the unknowns in the vocals of the era.

Still was recorded by Ray with the Glenn Miller band. We associate the song with his voice with the Miller band not hers... She came in and did a job, but I was ONLY WONDERING if there might have been an ill feeling in Ray's part over it.

    • @bblegacy

The song was written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren FOR the movie, which was designed to be a showcase for Miller and his band just like "Sun Valley Serenade was when that film was made the year before this. It was AFTER the movie was filmed that the song became a pop vocal just for Eberle to sing as the band's crooner at live appearances, and Miller made the record of it for Victor six weeks after the movie sound track was recorded. Nothing was "taken away" from Ray Eberle for the movie. It "became" one of his vocal features after the filming of the movie was finished. As a popular band usually employed to play dances and entertaining radio audiences Miller's use of a female singer with the band pretty much relegated any of those he employed to singing novelty pop songs and little of anything else (I.E. languid romantic ballads like this).
