Audio Myths with EXO, Will Small Amps Blow Big Woofers?

- I took a trip to Visit EXO Contralto. We talked about some car audio myths and explained a bit of the reality behind them. Check out his video here and give a like. • Does SUBWOOFER SIZE Co...
Myths we discuss here are.
1. Will low power blow woofers?
2. Does body panel flex always hurt SPL in a vehicle?
3. When a woofer blows, is it destroyed forever?
4. Do you have to match brands of amps, speakers, and subs?
Thank you to EXO Contralto, Moncrief, and the gang at Sundown Audio for allowing me to film and chat about audio.

Was great having you stay with us, Ed! Hope to do it again someday😀
Need more animals, thanks again brother, so much fun.
Love the statement float a baby funny as hell .
Can't wait to see the home system project
Any time i am using a small amp and under powering my show i use a parametric eq with a lot of volts out on the rca outs so ur getting the power of a bigger amp there are all kinds of loopholes in car audio but u gotta know exactly what you doing before stepping over into doing things outside of the normal realm fr cause not all head units has the volt outs on the rca outs fr fr people are lost when u start to even bring up the subject on rca outs fr fr might be something you might want to speak about fr fr
This is AWESOME
Great vid! You guys rock 🤘
You rock!
@@SparkedEd 👍👍
You know you did good when Derick gives a reply!

Omg omg my 3 fav UA-cam's all in one time and place! Omg omg this is sooo deep like an existential intersectional existence type deal. Omg 😲 omg I think I'm gonna faint boiz catch me I'm wearing a skirt btw omg omg 😲
Who the fooook is Bruce? That's EXO 😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
Bruce weatherington III
All these years and years I've been watching Exo I never knew his name was Bruce. True legend and great teacher!
In over a decade of collecting, trading, and flipping car audio I've seen subs blown more often from clipping than from being overpowered.
I've dispelled a lot of myths for local beginners and I've made many mistakes myself learning the hard way.
It's great to have guys like you clear things up on a large scale.
We all start somewhere so some folks need to be mindful of that when criticising rookies.
Well said!
hands down one of the best youtube colabs! cant wait for another, maybe a colab build?!?!
My first system was 2 12" soundstream subs and 1 400 watt amplifier. I paid $1200 for it.
I upgraded about 9 months later, when I got introduced to chopped and screwed music.
I "gave" the 12s back to Classic Audio, and I bought a pair of 12" SE subwoofers, a 1200 watt amplifier, and an x y crossover and bass boost. I paid $1800 for the upgrade, in addition to a new 5 sqft³ sealed box. I got the box for $100 because they got the old box back.
The soundstream 12s sounded good to me, but I was under the impression that they were not really good because they were $100 per speaker.
The SE 12s definitely responded to low frequencies that I had no idea were even in the songs I liked.
2 weeks later, I went back to Classic Audio to get a pair of component tweeters, a pair of 3 way 6.5s, and a pair of 3 way 6x9s.
Common sense told me to cut the bass all the way down on the head unit and cut the treble all the way up.
I ran the 3 ways and the tweeters with the 400 watt amp on high pass. I had to tweak the gain to get rid of the distortion. That girl was crystal clear! Oh My God!!!
I ran the subs on the 1200 watt amp. Classic Audio said I should bridge the amp to achieve 2 ohms. I had to tweak the gain so that I could use the maximum volume on the head unit.
Crystal clear bass. Crystal clear highs. Awesome mids.
With the crossover turned down, I could get rid of the low frequencies, and with it turned up, I could increase the low frequencies that passed through to the speaker.
The lower frequencies make the amp run hot and go into protect mode.
I went to a competition and I hit 162.3 decibels. That's with a sealed box.
I really loved that car. It was 2001 Nissan Altima Limited edition.
I'm really liking the whole basehead Mythbusters thing it's very knowledgeable and helpful keep up the good work guys
Glad you enjoy it!
EXACTLY my thoughts as well Russell.. these guys need to do a big project together...like a yacht or something...
This is awesome Ed lester and Bruce Wetherington doing videos together . OH man this is gonna be super nice when it comes to the big build. The knowledge these 2 guys have is spectacular to say the least and I'm excited to know what's in store.
I appreciate it man
Can't remember which high spl guy has a panel resonating on purpose in his box that he said helped his score
I love everything about audio just like you guys , home , car and pro audio .
I have a Rockford Fosgate complete wiring system with two DB Drive amps Kenwood speakers kicker tweeters and kicker subwoofers. Its my 2nd system and never even thought that people would think that they would need to brand match their equipment.
Yes. Another video by Ed and Bruce.
The brand myth is a big miss understanding.
In my Volvo V70 -04 I have Phoenix Gold Elite amp and subwoofers 2 x 12" and DLS Scandinavia 3" system with ground zero 8" sub in the front mounted in the dash. Front powered by a 4 channel ground zero amp. Then 3 stinger spv70 battery.
The big secret is to balance the system and get the crossovers and gain adjusted just right. Then rock and roll....🤪
Two of my favorite UA-camrs!!! I love these type of videos. This would have been awesome live. Thanks for the video Ed can’t wait to see some more!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Found you on EXOs channel. Thanks for the content!
Into car audio for 30years, and it is great to know, and makes a lot.of common sense that a woofer is never 'really dead'. I ALWAYS LEARN SOMETHING NEW!! :-) GREAT VIDEO Guys
Excellent information! Breaking it down to terms that the beginners or newer bassheads can understand. Thanks for your guys work in this industry!
Our pleasure!
While this experience is from a indoor surround system, it perfectly illustrates myth #1. I had a service call to check a system that was using four JBL L100 Century speakers, and the compliant was that the sound was weak from the rear speakers. I brought my oscilloscope to the residence. There was a large room with the listening area somewhat closer to the left front speaker than the rest. He was putting the signal through a tape machine preamp and then through the main amplifier which also has a preamp. He said he liked it because it was "louder". I put the scope on the left front speaker and found a normal signal and this speaker was working correctly. When I put the scope on the other three speakers the signal was clipping severely. This was because he had balanced out the sound and required a stronger signal to the other speakers that were farther away from the listening position.
The problem was that the woofers were the only drivers working in those three speakers. The mid range and tweeters were fried. This was because the heavily clipped signal overheated their voice coils. I told him that he would need to repair or replace these blown drivers and also explained why they were blown. I did not hear any follow up from him.
Wow, can't believe he liked it that way.
I enjoy watching your videos keep up the great work 👍
Keep these video coming! You guys make a great team
EXO and Ed! I have a myth I would love you to cover in your next video. I always hear the myth that just because an audio company is new, that they are trash. Example like Wolfram Audio. They have only been around like 2 1/2 years but they have put out some of the highest quality amps at an outstanding price. Half the price of sundown or crossfire for the most part. Just because some is new and cheaper doesn’t mean that it’s trash. It just means I can build my system for almost half the cost of equally sized builds. I like money and the more I can save the better
I use a Crown XLi2500 amp on my home stereo. 500wpc @ 8ohms. 750 @ 4ohms(I think). It's a pro amp and costs waaaay less than a Hi-Fi amp with the same power ratings and it sounds great. I know crown has been around for years but the price is low for a quality AB amp. My point is I agree with you. The only problem I have with new stuff is you don't know the reliability.
I just preordered the wolfram 0-4000amp for $332 with coupon
Good idea here
I have 3 18’s and 2 W-7500’s and 10 6.5’s and 4 super tweeters and I have paid less than $4,000 and I only bought so much to have spare equipment on hand if something goes wrong which it won’t but just in case
ShowtimeSPL I really hope y’all cover this because I love wolfram and they reall are making some big noise in the community
“Keep things fun, and car audio is my life man”, Exo! You couldn’t have said it any better. Great upload Ed👍🏽. You guys are awesome!!!🔊🔊🔊

Could have watched any other video on UA-cam but I picked this one it actually has production. It keeps it interesting.
i Love this myth busting Format. please more of this 😍
Good information, as usual. These myth busting videos are great. Hope to see a lot more in the future.
Glad you like them!
Awesome video! Very informative for noobs like me, prepping for my first install. Can’t wait to order these parts!
Rockfords in my dash polks in my rear powered by a clarion amp alpine r10 in my trunk powered by an mtx amp and it sounds fine to me 😂
I love this community, keep it up!
That was a fun 2 part series...
ty both!
Thank you
good idea on a video series. I enjoyed the vids on both of your channels. it is neat to see the youtube bass community do videos together and compliment each other. seems most of the youtube car audio channels i subscribe to intermingle with each other and watch the live streams that i do. These are the car audio videos I want to watch. much better then the attack video on Steve Meade.
Thanks guys
Hey thanks for the feedback and for tuning in.
Love it.... keep up the great work
Great video and simple enough for the new comers.
Awesome video!! Love seeing you guys together!! Y'all should definitely do more videos together, and have special guest as well!!
Definitely!!
Perfect partner up to talk car audio and myths. Love it. Get to see both of you abit more for more knowledge and entertainment. All the way from Australia I say thankyou both 🤘
Agreed
Thanks man, it's much appreciated
well said guys! I've been telling my buddies this for years. I sent this video to all of them!!! thank you!
Hey thank you
Awesome video I’ve been following both of you since the beginning! Good job !
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for this video it was awesome exo and showtime split, love you guys🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
Great video Ed and Bruce Contralto. Very informative.
Thank you kindly!
Great! Exo going to put a lot of small subs in a room, that's definitely better than having a giant 18, or even 2 15 that causes a lot of waves canceling. What I did was put two 12 subs in different spots, but one in a 120L enclosure to sub bass and the other in a 30L to give that short punch that only the beginning of the mid bass can do, it's around 90hz.
Bruce, I completely recommend you to do the lots of smalls subs instead of few overpowered subs.
Thank you both for the knowledge. You guys are awesome!
Our pleasure!
I got some Sony’s home speakers and the surrounds was gone and I ordered the surround kit just to see if I could do it and I done it was easy to do and the speakers sounds great and I saved money , Great video 👍
At one point, many moons ago, I would have LOVED to work at a subwoofer factory, you would catch me working 100 hours a week probably lol. Oh, how things change.
Thank you both for the information and for staying in the game for so many years.
Thanks man, it's great to keep passions alive
I absolutely love your stuff!
Battery/caps to stop headlight dimming!!! One of my biggest pet peeve myths!!! I think exo has touched on it a few years ago, but still would informative to touch on electrical myths! Even the "zero gauge is the best" for any amp myth would be interesting to hear your opinions on!!
Another Awesome video! Great Colab!
Glad you enjoyed it!
People say peak wattage on speakers isn't an important #. I disagree, my theory is get an amp with a power rating at least as high as the peak, then the amp always has the rated power of the speaker available. The bigger the amp the better, headroom is the key to good sound at all levels. I'm more of a home stereo guy and that's how I do it, with good results. Getting ready to upgrade the system in my Colorado. I'm a huge Cerwin-Vega! fan, own a couple pairs and a couple subs for home. I'm thinking of going with a direct swap out on the speakers and tweeters, add a sub and proper amps and new head unit. Leaning toward CV! because I've always loved thier home stuff, I've heard great things about their car audio and the price is right. Thinking of a shallow sub for under the seat, I just want a solid low end and don't want to take up any space. Any opinions/suggestions would be great. I'm trying to keep it under a couple grand.
Love this!!
Good videos fellas. Enjoyed the collaboration
Much appreciated
Gr research does some awesome speaker upgrades usually relating to crossover networks more home related but awesome speaker building..
Good vid guys. I was a guy to keep the brand lined up (head unit, amp, sub, tweets, and mids) so thanx. (Was a guy btw)
2 awesome guys in one video!
EXO is my fav car audio UA-camr. He’s an average guy doing amazing things!!
These new myth video series are badass lots of good info, people always tell me about the last myth when they get a demo cause I run Skar amps and sundown subs in my truck LoL! At this point I just act like I've never heard it before. 🤔
I've heard stuff like that before too haha
For sure I lost count of how many subs that were just given to me because they were blown, torn cone or surround, or the magnet was dislocated from the basket. Now if it was just a small issue I'd clean it up repair and most of the time return the sub looking and sounding good again. But. When I first got into repairing/reconing subs myself you can bet that sub stayed in my collection. I mean it was just gonna get tossed in the trash anyway and who doesnt love free subs... keep doing what yall doing I have learned alot from both of your channels
Thanks man. A pile of woofers is sometimes fun to have around though. lol
@@SparkedEd Right though... That's exactly what I've been telling my wife. But for some reason she doesnt see it. Oh well she'll come around sooner or later. Lol
Good vid guys , always good to help the rooks out. There is so much silly crap being said about car audio now days , probly more than it was in the eighties and nineties.
The internet is both good and bad for this, haha
Came here because of EXO but looking forward to digging into your Channel
this is something we all should support! you might just learn something
I'm amazed at the number of people who don't know this. I am a home audio freak from back in the early eighties and I had the unfortunate experience of ruining a set of Klipsch Heresy's that way. I was just a teen at the time.
Great job guy, outstanding information
Much appreciated!
Great video men!!
Appreciate it!
Amazingly awesome video brother nicely well done keep up the good work making killer basshead UA-cam videos
Appreciate it man
Cerwin Vega Strokers!! my buddy had 2 12s in a tahoe back in the day, always wanted those but became a jl audio fan boy.
Your sad confession is warmly accepted....if someone gave me a JL 13w7 FOR FREE....I would prolly keep it.... But they would have to throw in an HD1200 amp for free also....
@@sarahconner9433 i dont get it
You confessed your sin.... That your a JL fan boy.... And that is a serious sin....but I forgive you!!
@@sarahconner9433 2 12 w7s in a wrangler, what you bumpin?
2x 12w7, oh those sound nice.....Oh ya I will definitely accept that as a gift...ok, give it to me for free..
A lot of good info guys!👍
Glad you think so!
My d40 navara have 1 12 in a ported box I built. We've found the same thing with the whole flex thing. We've found at a certain volume the roof/back window pillar flexing and forcing the sound wave forward it gained an extra 7db total. Me and my buddy were so stoked
Damn, that's a big gain.
Yeah was a huge gain. Was only a total of 146.9 so nothing crazy but still.
Honestly I think the whole brand matching thing also comes from brands like Pioneer, who advertise their amps, subs, decks and speakers to "work well together." I think the reality of that is some brands just want to encourage you to buy your whole system from them. In my opinion the best approach is to buy from whoever as long as you're getting the best quality and performance for your money. My subwoofer is a Skar, my speakers are NVX, my sub amp is a Pioneer, my speaker amp is an old used Alpine and my deck is a Kenwood Excelon, they all seem to work with each other wonderfully. I like Pioneer's stuff for the most part, besides their subs, but if I bought a whole Pioneer system I probably would have spent twice as much, and the system likely would not sound nearly as good as it does. I'm a SQ guy myself but I do love my bass, not the hugest SPL guy but I do love watching videos about these crazy systems in the community. It was great to see EXO here, thanks for bringing these myths to light! I hope people who are new to car audio will see this and not get scammed or misinformed.
EXO Bass face. Priceless
Awesomeness brothas. Gotta love some EXO !! Coolest dude around !!
Heck yeah he is
Great videos!!
Thanks!
Very good guys. And so True.
Great video.
Thanks!
I have a old powerbass 3xl 15 I blew years ago. Was thinking about reconing it and bringing it back to life lol
Yesssss
EXO's channel is by far my favorite basshead channel.
Your both amazing people
Left out a possible important thing In my previous post.
Assume the setup scenario with two 15s inverted. 2.5 inch voice coil. 1k rms each. Lot of cone area that could warp or deform by being asked to pull out hard vs push into a structurally more rigid scene. I meant you can push the backside of some woofers and they will give or deform kinda easy. But, that same cone is substantially more rigid and resists deformation when pushed from the front.
You guys make a good team. One thing I’d say about brand matching is it’s true when talking about companies like boss. I’m sure if their 1100w amp dynos at 250 or whatever an 1100 rated sub wouldn’t do well with an amp that’s actually doing those numbers. Rockville actually said EXO abused the k9 because it’s rated power wasn’t for music lol
Than what was it rated for?LOL
They have a video response but basically it’s rated for white noise not music
I just blew my type r 12 d2 I'm trying to git psi sarft parts for is love the video
Curious about you thoughts about jl 3 ohm subs with other brand amps stable for 1 or 2 ohm. Reason I ask is that I bought 2 separate model jl subs a w6 3 ohm and w7 1.5 ohm and both played on my 1 ohm stable mtx thunder elite amp had a strange rattle sound that sounded to be coming from the voice coil I sold the w6 and got the w6 and same odd rattle or somewhat crackled sound so when I sold the w6 the person that had bought it had a 1200w jl amp and the sub played without that rattle-like noise. I had that amp with 1 sub previous to the jl and 3 since both jl subs and no other brand subs had that rattle and none of the others were 1.5 ohm or 3ohm rated subwoofers. I'm curious if this is normal? Or did I just have bad luck with both jl subs(if so why did w7 play without that noise on the jl amp) or could it just have been that my amp just not like those particular subs? Btw I have a jl 15w0v3-4 4ohm svc that plays without any that rattle noise, a 2ohm DVC American bass xfl (2)4ohm DVC SA12's, of which none have the same rattle/crackled sound? If anyone else has had similar issues or knows why this happened please share with me I hated to sell off both jl's although a bit on the pricey side they have great sound quality particularly when w7 in the same enclosure and similar type of vehicle when playing on that guys jl amp
Brand matching here, the only one in specific I know is JL Audio with their RIPS and the 3 ohm W7 subwoofer, now I’m not saying the Jl amps are the only ones for those subs but they hit that target market square on the nose
NICE!!!
If more people found sub builders or just learned to do it themselves the world would be a better place :)
Plus it's a great skill to have
I like these Mythbusters
VERY NICE!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey guys great vids and nicely done. I have a question if you can. When building a box with subs facing up, is there a minimum ammount of space that you need to leave between the subs and the ceiling? I have 8 inches of space available is ot enough?
Just need to make sure you can fit the woofers in and mount them
@@SparkedEd I was going to mount them before inserting the box into the car. My concern was that having them 8 inches from the roof of the car would severly inpact air loading and would make the system less windy
@@jack007301 It depends on so many things. It may hurt or help. Only way to know is to try different boxes and positions in your exact setup. I've rarely seen it hurt though. If you compete, wall rules are strict on height so watch out.
I was given a JL 12W6v2 for free in a small sealed box and all it needs is a new surround lol. I took out the JL and am currently using the box for a RF P3S 12 and she slaps. I’d like to get a new foam surround and put the JL in a ported box optimized for the sub
I like sundowns approach to spl.2 subs back in the corner of a huge space.it makes sense.its like running dome pistons in a motor with tiny valves vs big huge valves and port.ya gotta get it in before ya can get it out.🤷🏻♂️
Why run 20 subs when ya can do it w 4
You mentioned cerwin vega which I absolutely loved in the 90s, but what happened? A year or so back I finally got some vega series subs an honestly they sounded good, but didn't sound as good to me as the 90s versions. Is it just me or have they gone down hill?
Always set your gains the right way. Why do people not understand I don't know
It is still one of the most ignored things in car audio. Having properly tuned amps make sure you get the best performance out of your system and increase the lifespan of your system as well. I've seen small systems that have been properly tuned sound way better than huge systems that have gains turned all the way up.
I think one of the main issues is people put their first subwoofer and amp in their car and see the gain knob thinking it's a volume knob that they need to crank all the way up to get their amp's full power, when in reality they're overdriving their amp past it's actual power output. We've probably all done it when first getting into subwoofers and car audio, crank the gain up higher than it should be, I've learned after blowing one of my subwoofers to just set it correctly and enjoy the system. Even a low end subwoofer and amp setup correctly and working is better than blowing up your gear and having no low end, that and clipping sounds terrible. Giving yourself some overhead with a bigger amp is a good approach too, then you just need to be careful not to blow up your sub(s).
excellent content....
Appreciated
I'm just thinking about all the math formula time it would take vs. Just testing the flex SPL.
I have an old XFL 12 inch where the voice coils are ruined. Do you know any sub repair shops ?

More power is fine as long as your drivers' mechanical limits aren't exceeded. Bottom line: if the voice coil can (thermally) handle the DC equivalent of your amplifier's output, the driver won't experience thermal failure. Of course we have to know what thermal limits are. Our noses tell us when things are too warm but changes have already occurred when this happens. We commonly use the dust cap trick to see if things are getting warm. Playing a 30Hz sine wave at the threshold of clipping for many minutes will definitely get things going. And if the vents are blocked it will cause failure as venting is calculated as part of thermal power handling.
RE: Musicians and reinforcement guys/gals can definitely tell you about reconing. ;-)
The whole amplifier brand matching subwoofer brand and some secret knowledge that isnt widely known thing reminds me of the great rockville debacle of 2019
have a class A/B amp 5 ch 3000 watt 2/4 ohm stable. If i bridge the amp with the + on ch1 and - on ch 5 does that realease the hole 3000 watts on a single ch at 2 ohms? Or is bridging the common 4/5th ch for a sub. Without any of the other ch being used release the full power into one ch? This is just a hypothetical question I am not doing this I have just always wondered about this scenario. Thank you.
What about the magnetism, ( life span of a magnet, if metal objects that touch the motor) can it weaken the magnetic field
Ed could you explain the importance of having a balance of both power and energy density?
I do cover it in my battery and supercap vids.
EXO is awesome I couldn't think of a better car audio ambassador to welcome new people who are interested in car audio, but may find it all a bit intimidating. He's got such a laid back upbeat positive friendly and welcoming kind of guy doesn't act smug or stuck-up or talk down to you like he's King know-it-all of car audio and you're just some idiot pleb. You can tell he genuinely has a passion for car audio and loves sharing his knowledge with others and he does it in a way that gives people that little confidence boost that says "hey you CAN do this and I'm going to show you how" that's the kind of person we need more of in this space.
That's why he is the best.
A matching system looks better.
I knew all these myths and I am a child! I like using the same brand to make things look fancy but I know you can use different brands.
Nice guys thanks
Thanks for watching
