According to that video you linked, Link's estimated maximum velocity in that height record was 533 m/s. Even though his launch was larger, you are still currently the fastest maximum velocity recorded (unless there is footage of faster that I'm unaware of, of course). I believe that his alignment under the chasm with his paracopter design at the lava floor allowed for a more efficient travel arc to the sky ceiling, enabling a larger launch with lower maximum velocity.

13:27 the fact that you got that spinning so fast that it does the eye trick where you think it's going backwards and slowing down at one point, in a video game, is absolutely crazy!
According to my calculations, the velocity for the launch that reached the height limit was about 19.3 meters per frame, which gives about 579m/s or Mach 1.6886. I sampled 180 frames of the z coordinates of Link moving up from the glitch to calculate acceleration (which seems to be constant in this case) to be .03253m/frames^2. This allowed for using the kinematics formula Δx=vt+(1/2)at^2 to find Link's initial vertical velocity by finding a time in the earlier launch which has about the same position as a time in the largest launch, and setting vt+(1/2)at^2 of the largest launch equal to vt+(1/2)at^2 for the earlier launch. Since the initial vertical velocity of the earlier launch, the time for the earlier launch to that positions, the time for the largest launch to that position, and the acceleration are all known, the only unknown in the vertical velocity of largest launch, which means I could solve for it. The position I used was as Link was near the rock seen at frame 12 of 18:53 in the original launch and frame 12 of 22:58. This gave a vertical initial velocity for the largest launch of about 18.21379m/frame. Assuming the horizontal velocity for Link was about the same as the original launch, this gives the total velocity of about 19.3m/frame, if my math is not wrong. It is quite possible I messed up my math somewhere, but I think the number should be about correct.
The deep40k max height launch? Yes that sounds about right! There is a very good chance that that launch went faster, as it didn’t need to contend with rocks. Maybe I should try to see the top speed I can get. It’s just a pain to measure them.

We can actually determine a minimum speed for Link! He goes up 4317 m in some number of seconds t. Acceleration due to gravity in Hyrule being g, we know that for a certain speed v, the height reached is equal to v^2/2g. Rearranging this equation, we get v = sqrt(2gh). The acceleration due to gravity in Hyrule has been determined to be 37.81 m/s^2. I would love an oco tutorial, while the other launching methods are fun i’ve been looking for something quick and easy just when i want to get some height. I feel like i’d definitely use oco the most during my playthroughs
Hey, that's pretty cool! I like seeing competent people using their gifts in video games to make something unexpectedly interesting. And just being a part of something greater gives such a fulfilling feeling!
I have to ask: Do we know for sure that the glide suit doesn't create extra drag when flying up? Because it may not be a coincidence that the one time you immediately reached the height limit was when you weren't wearing the glide suit. Someone also mentioned that the Chinese player who beat the record did it without any clothing/armor.
Would probably need to do a set of launches with the suit, and without, and calculate the speed a bunch of times in order to really know... Would be really cool if Nintendo gave each of their armor sets (or pieces individually) their own coefficient of drag...
This was an insane journey to watch. And when the music kicked it when you launched all the way from he depths to the height limit was amazing. I got chills
There's a part of me that wishes instead of just a "You cannot go further" barrier at the height limit that Link just starts suffocating from lack of air. And then if you go fast enough you get a special death animation for getting launched into orbit (assuming you made it up there before you ran out of air).
I mean, Link's well equipped for space travel, I'd say. Maybe he could offset the lack of oxygen slowly killing him by gorging on apples en masse while he's up there.
This was a good f***ing video! Amazing and impression and your commentary was the best! I'm glad you were able to make such a goal, and not even get assisted by a wing suit. And that depths diving theme was just such a good touch.
Do you know if the flight suit, although giving you better maneuverability, creates more drag? Because you nailed it without the glide suit, ironically in the Zora gear, wonder if that plays a roll
Two things really disappoint me, zonai charge and stamina. Even with a fully upgraded stamina wheel, if you launch from a sky tower, you can hardly get any distance at all. And the zonai stuff which is supposed to be the main selling point, you can't build anything cool, anything more than a single fan just consumes too much power in too short a time.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEASE make a video of the physical implications of this!!!! (Also with the quickness of that record breaking launch and the speed of which you hit the load point I think it’s safe to say you were closer to Mach 2 than 1.59, it looked that fast)
This was a recommended video and I just want to say, your story was amazing, the way you walked through it, etc... really helped me understand how to perform this trick. Thanks for taking the time to not only figure it out, but also to document it and share it with the masses. Kudos! You've earned a new subscriber.
After going through the footage, removing the part where it froze to load more of the map, you traveled that distance in exactly 13.3 seconds. 4,317 meters in 13.3 seconds equals to about 324.58 meters per second. Which means you were averaging almost exactly 726 miles per hour I'll do more exact math some other time, I need to find out your elevation when the game lagged. From there, I'll be able to calculate your launch speed more accurately
21:22 “I wanted perfection. To be the first person to launch out of hell and touch the heavens.” That was the rawest thing I’ve heard a person say and I can’t believe I found it in a video about exploiting the physics of a video game
Man, these videos are simultaneously awesome and also sad cos they remind me how little imagination I have 😆. I could have literally walked into a prebuilt paracopter and not managed to think of this lol. Great job!
videos like these are so funny to me because i end up being absolutely enthralled to learn about people using complicated math and random obscure physics interactions to see how far they can fling this dumb little twink into the sky
So you can't find the exact amount because you're missing the exact height at every moment (also if you do, please use the sky islands map cause depths is like impossible to read.) But here is the average 13.217 seconds to travel 4217m, so 319.06m per second, or 1046.78 ft per second. Multiply by 60 to get 62,806.8 ft per minute, multiply again to get 3,768,408 ft per hour, or 713.71 miles per hour (1,148.61km per hour). About 53.29 miles per hour away from the sound barrier or Mach 1. Mach 1.59 would be over 1,200 mph.
This is so beautiful. As someone who enjoys game breaking and speedrun, and knows a few who do these things, I'm very very impressed by the efforts put in finding this. Still on my first casual playthrough and haven't get to experiment as much.
This is some wonderful editing with a compelling retelling of events that in no great way will affect my life... but goddamn if it wasn't satisfying in the end.

well, you can take link's vertical deceleration into account, and calculate his top speed using the time it took to reach the top. I'm kinda tired so I won't actually do the calculation but it's probably something like this X(t) = X0 + v0t + 0.5at^2 replace X(t) with the final height replace X0 with the initial height replace t with the time it took to get to the top of the world replace a with his aerial deceleration then it's just basic algebra to find v0 which is the speed at the start it's gonna look something like 3292 = -1025 + v0(about 14 seconds because of the loading) + 0.5(insert here deceleration)14^2 4317 = 14V0 + 0.5a * 196 (4317 - a*98)/14 = V0 = top speed whoever's willing to do some digging and find his vertical deceleration rate, just plug in a as the thing and simplify the equation and voila you have the top speed

The first time I’ve heard “that day, I was messing around with some fans and stuff” from a UA-camr and not been repulsed by the results. Keep up the amazing work, you’re like a scientist!
Oh god, sorry didn't mean for that to sound bad. I hope to never need to make an apology video
@@paradox_guardian You seem like the kind of guy who would never have to do such a thing! Serious credit for how much effort went into achieving those clips, especially towards the end!
I can tell when a channel is going to blow up in views, this is definitely one of those times. Incredible video dude!
I remember you guys when I make videos. Seriously. I pour my heart into these and they often don’t do so well. At those times, the comments from my small community are what drives me forward.
Busted out laughing at 14:19 noticing the villager fight the bokoblin, imagining his relief turning to confusion and terror when he realizes the Hero of the Calamity isn’t there to save his life but instead finagle a contraption to spin like a motor and careen Link off the hillside faster than the speed of sound
"Hero of the Calamity! I need your help!" *Link is already a distant speck on the horizon*
I never thought I'd see Maxwell's equations in a Zelda video
Hehe
production quality on this is cleeeeeaaaan really great work
Thanks :) Comments like this keep me going. I sometimes wonder why I do this. It seems like the harder I work on a video, the fewer views it gets
@@paradox_guardianclearly the effort you have put into all of your other videos has paid off! I'd bet even in the videos that didn't do as well, you learned a lot. Really fantastic and honestly inspiring video! I had figured trying any recall launches might be too hard as kind of a casual gamer, and I'm sure I'll find it difficult still, but I want to try it now!
Also, as far as you feeling like your videos on earlier non spear launches were a waste, I'm pretty sure clips from your videos were my introduction to the subject, so that's *all* you.
Excellent video! Compelling and fascinating. Subscribed :)
if there's one thing that this version of link will never stop doing, it's injuring himself to get somewhere fast.
I love the use of music to build up the tension at 22:42
That took a while to get right. Glad you like it!
Your use of music during the final record-breaking scene is so cinematic -- it really built up the suspense 😎. Congrats on breaking the speed/distance record, and congrats on a really well produced video.
I really enjoyed watching your journey on the reddit from "I found a way to make a board spin really fast, gonna do some tests on it" to "Hey guys I just launched from the depths to the height limit".
incredible editing, discoveries, and commentary!
glad to see you’re still making videos, you’re a real BOTW og :)
Thanks. I appreciate the small audience from those days who remain.
My husband and I laughed SO HARD at this video. I could barely breathe. Thanks so much for the nerdy research, countless hours of failed flight attempts, and brilliant editing to give us this gem. ❤
Academic quality work and a truly great video! Looking forward to more!
dang bro, great video. probably some of the most effort i have seen put into a video this whole year. you deserve my sub.
This! This is IT. This is the content I'm after on zeldatube. Marvelous work! To the point, exciting, well-researched and analysed. An absolute delight. Instant follow.
Thanks
This is genuinely one of the most entertaining videos I have ever watched. Great work! can't wait to see more content.
i have to say, the production on this video is absolutely amazing, you definitely deserve more subscribers
Wait- this only has 300k views?
I thought, with this quality and everything- at least 1 million was what I expected-
I’m glad to have stumbled upon this channel randomly :D
SM64 Mario: "Finally, a worthy opponent. Our battle will be legendary!"
Leave it to Nintendo to make the games with the most useful glitches lol
The perfect chance for Terminal Montage’s speed demon to make a return.
20:30 I'm so grateful that your calculations are so clean. Proper usage of units, vectors in bold, extra unit in brackets to keep homogeneity. You clearly are a "number guy".
I don’t know if you know this, but launching yourself horizontally and entering dive modus, if you cancel dive and directly press glide you’ll keep the momentum of how fast you were diving/flying . So in (terminal velocity) horizontal dive, press B and instantly X and you’ll keep your speed
Incredibly well made, and super intersting video. I love hearing how people figure this stuff out, and major respect for including all the others that helped you!
Sick video. Subscribed ♥
I would love an oco tutorial, while the other launching methods are fun i’ve been looking for something quick and easy just when i want to get some height. I feel like i’d definitely use oco the most during my playthroughs
I’ll put that in the video idea list. I have some other projects I want to do first
Bro I am so happy that you were able to do it in the end. The dedication is admirable. This was fun to watch!
Hey, that's pretty cool!
I like seeing competent people using their gifts in video games to make something unexpectedly interesting. And just being a part of something greater gives such a fulfilling feeling!
Great video, I've really enjoyed it. Thanks for the shoutout. Great work on that glorious launch.
I was wondering about that, but I’ve never noticed a difference. If so, it’s not perceivable.
I just can't fathom the dedication that went into all this. Great work, man!
Thanks :)
Sometimes, taking a step back for a while is all it takes. I'm so glad your work paid off.
The fact that the game freezes implies that you are. breaking the Time Barrier.
This video has amazing editing and that final launch was INSANE
Do you know if the flight suit, although giving you better maneuverability, creates more drag? Because you nailed it without the glide suit, ironically in the Zora gear, wonder if that plays a roll
The use of the Wind Temple Approach themes for That One Success was _incredible._ Phenomenal editing.
I'm so glad this video popped up in my recommendations. Absolutely fascinating!
Yes, but can you use this to launch Korroks into space?
Man that was really cool mate. You just won a new sub. Congrats on the launch!
After going through the footage, removing the part where it froze to load more of the map, you traveled that distance in exactly 13.3 seconds.
4,317 meters in 13.3 seconds equals to about 324.58 meters per second. Which means you were averaging almost exactly 726 miles per hour
I'll do more exact math some other time, I need to find out your elevation when the game lagged. From there, I'll be able to calculate your launch speed more accurately
Really great job here. I like the editing with the wind temple at the end. 👍
Thank you! It took a while to get the wind temple music perfect but I think it ended up looking nice
Now the real question is, what was the g-force Link experienced when he went from near zero to mach 1.59 in 1/30th of a second?
Somewhere on the order of 1800G I think
@@paradox_guardian I feel like that's up there with one of the biggest feats of Link's durability.
I haven’t even played totk yet but this was a fascinating little documentary. Nice job
the entire launch lasted 20 seconds from 22:55 to 23:15
21:22 “I wanted perfection. To be the first person to launch out of hell and touch the heavens.” That was the rawest thing I’ve heard a person say and I can’t believe I found it in a video about exploiting the physics of a video game
I did enjoy this as much as you did. Such a great job on the whole video, I love this!
Man, these videos are simultaneously awesome and also sad cos they remind me how little imagination I have 😆. I could have literally walked into a prebuilt paracopter and not managed to think of this lol. Great job!
Thanks for the timecode for the final jump ! I'd gladly watch the whole process after seeing the final result... That's impressive
Man tbh your like one of the smartest gaming channels I’ve seen in awhile
videos like these are so funny to me because i end up being absolutely enthralled to learn about people using complicated math and random obscure physics interactions to see how far they can fling this dumb little twink into the sky
Who doesn’t love a fast-moving twink?
super under-rated. Always interesting videos from what I've seen
Don't forget the 4th law: "Don't kill link"
Such a thorough explanation and analysis. Appreciate it bro. Wish we had some people like you on our projects at work loool
I fuckin' love moments in speedrunning that give me genuine chills. This video did that. Congratulations, amigo!
What an awesome video, from the experimenting to the narrative and editing, it's all fantastic.
Man you created a ease of use for the rest of us we appreciate the knowledge you gave us
So you can't find the exact amount because you're missing the exact height at every moment (also if you do, please use the sky islands map cause depths is like impossible to read.) But here is the average
13.217 seconds to travel 4217m, so 319.06m per second, or 1046.78 ft per second.
Cool, now break the speed light barrier
This is so beautiful. As someone who enjoys game breaking and speedrun, and knows a few who do these things, I'm very very impressed by the efforts put in finding this.
Still on my first casual playthrough and haven't get to experiment as much.
That was a VERY GOOD use of music on the final launch.
This is some wonderful editing with a compelling retelling of events that in no great way will affect my life... but goddamn if it wasn't satisfying in the end.
Very cool. And I want to add, exceptionally good work on scripting and editing!
Man I still get the chills from this video. You need a HUGE reward. This game will forever be in my life 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
That is an absolutely amazing video, please keep uploading at any rythm that suits you
Dang, the MUSIC!!! The music during the highest launch part was so good!!!
thank you for posting this video. i watch this every time i feel down and it immediately lifts my spirits and gives me hope. your passion is inspiring and makes others want to spend time on what is interesting to them. thank you so much for sharing ❤️
yo insane quality production, love it
Game Theory: Why Link Is Actually A 5th Generation Air Superiority Fighter
Bro acts like if he wons the nobel price ...
Great video and storytelling ! It seems ridiculous, but maybe one day with the proper clipping glitch you could use the recall launch from the depths underneath Hyrule Castle. Up to the sky limit it would total 5,764 meters. Wouldn’t that be awesome !
Yeah it sounds cool, but we’d need to clip mid-launch without losing speed. I can’t imagine how we would do that, but boy would it be cool!
@@paradox_guardianusing a emulator in PC wouldn't it be possible to configure the game sou you can clip through the terrain while maintaining the collisions active for the entities like the zonai devices?
“The first person to launch out of hell and touch the heavens.” Bro, that line is cold as fuck
Omg I should've found your channel earlier 😮 Honestly, at first I wasn't sure if I would watch it until the end but oh boy I'm so glad I did. You did such an extraordinary job and we can tell the huge amount of work you put into this video, thank you! You just earned another sub! Keep up the great work!
This video is so well made, you even have this blocky diagram of a slice through the mountain its wild
well, you can take link's vertical deceleration into account, and calculate his top speed using the time it took to reach the top. I'm kinda tired so I won't actually do the calculation but it's probably something like this
X(t) = X0 + v0t + 0.5at^2
replace X(t) with the final height
replace X0 with the initial height
replace t with the time it took to get to the top of the world
replace a with his aerial deceleration
then it's just basic algebra to find v0 which is the speed at the start
it's gonna look something like
3292 = -1025 + v0(about 14 seconds because of the loading) + 0.5(insert here deceleration)14^2
4317 = 14V0 + 0.5a * 196
(4317 - a*98)/14 = V0 = top speed
whoever's willing to do some digging and find his vertical deceleration rate, just plug in a as the thing and simplify the equation and voila you have the top speed
You teached me about the coc that you made that is a good idea to break the sound barrier and the video was good thats all i wanted keep it up bro
I'm not a numbers guy but I'm always impressed by those that are. This was really well done!
Hey..wow..this video is like actual "UA-cam GOLD" i like to call it. Very interesting and super informative. So glad i found this. Cant wait to try
