The thing is, though, nearly every Gothamite super-villain in Batman was highly educated (all those doctors) and/or prominent members of society or from wealthy families. And they were all _white._ Which, you could argue demonstrates the divide in social status and access to higher education, but it's much more likely that the characters were all created in an era before concepts such as 'civil rights' and 'racial equality' started becoming prominent factors in popular culture and media.

BATMAN LITERALLY HAD TO TEAM UP WITH JOKER TO BEAT HIM, AND BATMAN WAS LIKE 'Joker. For the record, we never speak of this shit again'. But DC ran it into the ground and fucked it up. They started making GOOFY ASS alternate Batmen.
