Need to redo this challenge and use the same color/blade combination. I wreck smallmouth bass with a rooster tail in a white body/silver blade combo. When I use a different pattern I always catch significantly less bass.
I think the missed fish are from the Mepps attracting more fish that are just slapping at it instead of really biting, where the Rooster Tail didn’t attract those. I use both, but generally prefer Mepps. Though I’ve also been making my own spinners now for years. I mainly use them for trout.
As a 50 year user of Mepps spinners, and rooster tails as well Mepps works better for rainbow and cutthroat trout Rooster tails work better for brownies Gold blades on sunny days, and silver on overcast
They’re both good in their own right. I catch more bass on rooster tail but I catch more trout on mepps. As far as the challenge goes I would say mepps won because you got 4 bites on the mepps compared to 2 bites on the rooster tail. All fish are quality fish when comparing them to a skunk
Fun to watch but I do personally feel the rooster tail had the advantage in this one for some larger fish. I’ve landed some reasonable large mouth on the silver size 1 un-dressed mepps aglia, but have noticed larger strikes on the dressed size 3. The presentation of the rooster tail was reasonably larger due to the dressed hooks. I’ve also never had to set my hooks quite that hard. The thin hooks seam to burry themselves pretty easy with only a slight sweeping motion in the set. Could the hard set be either ripping through the smaller fish?
Its very possible the hard set could be ripping through the smaller fish, but I did not set too hard for the mepps, so the larger profile hooks may have needed a harder set since they may hot have penetrated as deep as intended
You didn't miss on the MEPPS, you are reeling far too fast once you make contact, set the hook and play the fish, let your rod and line do the work, you are just trying to crane them in with your rell, not playing the fish accordingly, its almost like you are in a hurry, you take the enjoyment out of fishing ? thats just my opinion, but what do I know, I've only been fishing for 46 years LOL, Jim, Scotland. Thanks for the comment Jim, the nature of the challenge is being able to perform with a time limit in mind hence the “rushed” demeanor. When I am not doing a video of this type, I do move and operate much slower in the water

Gotta keep the rod tip high once you set the hook to keep the fish on these lighter rods

The gold blade mepps with deep red is the best mepps
Will it catch me stocked rainbow trouts in the winter? Or are they kind of sluggish and won't chase lures?
Mepps all the way! The French blade makes the difference! Rooster Tail for pan fish is the bomb! But for larger fish Mepps all day long!
The winner is whichever bait is cheaper

I had the same problem losing fish with mepps spinners
I've had amazing results with the Long Gold version of that Mepps spinner.
Both spinners good. Reel slower may have gotten others. Use identical colors and hackles. Great video.
Need to put blue fox vibrax in the mix
i think the Rostertail is better my opinion
#2 blade, silver or gold color with a gray and white skirt Mepps catch me all spieces of fish when im wading. I don't waste time with a Rooster tail.
Dude you set the hook very hard with the rooster tail and not so much with the mepps
Mepps needs single hook version then you won’t lose any fish
Panther Martin wins
(Flawless victory)
Their equal!🐠
Your bias towards the roostertait shows by the way you set the hook on was much better.
You did not sharpen hooks before useing
They were right out of the package, no sharpening should be required
