I'm just a guy in Kansas playing around in his garage. Come along in my adventures riding, racing, modifying and repairing my small fleet of unusual misfits.
“It’s freakin’ fixed, y’all!” Anyone who’s wrenched is immediately sharing the joy and satisfaction in that moment.
This is the content I come here for - Jake buys junk, Jake fixes junk. Well done. FWIW, until you replace the control arms or control arm bushings, your steering will probably hunt. Now it's time for you to "de-JC Whitney" the exterior.
on the bright side it'll never get stolen it keeps it that way
Seeing the blutooth exhaust tip really ties the build together for me
That straight pipe with a spare exhaust tip was hilarious.
that was painful but also so funny. i just wonder how much the original owner thought it was funny vs cool.
GOBBLESS 😂
It's got that new WiFi exhaust
Bluetooth exhaust.
I worked for a Chrysler stealership when these came out...they were not well built we soon found out. On the flip side I still have a couple of them that are well maintained that come through for service.
100% glad the Cruiser comes with spare exhaust tip & spare tire. Just in case.
Oh man, I was worried that it was really broken from that title and thumbnail. Awesome that it's running well without too much work and expense.
Hahahahahahahahahaha
Just wait.
IME, these cars are hilarious to work on as they are basically slightly - and I mean SLIGHTLY evolved Dodge Neons underneath. Cheap to fix, but some of the engineering decisions and cut corners from the factory also make you shake your head at times. Perfect for DIY mechanics, though. Run it, stuff breaks, fix it, rinse, repeat :)
Let's hear the horns!!!
Jake, you're so easy to look at, and you're so damn smart about it all. I love how easy it is to listen to you explain things. I get a little tired of guys that try so hard to be comedians (vicegrip garage for one). Never get tired of you.
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
A feller can hold a guy up without putting another down. No need to sling mud, especially at a genuinely good guy like Derek.
That just sums you up....If you can't see that Derek is actually not trying at all....and he's just funny. Jakes Ace..You just don't need to compare him to Derek, its a whole different sport.
@@danstewart8218 Not sure what you are trying to say in your reply, but if you compare Derek's early videos with his later videos, you can see that he developed this dumb Viking character act that isn't really funny. It's a shtick that he uses. Jake is honest, Derek is acting.
Brilliant work JKake, and congratulations on getting the car to finally behave , I watch these videos and remember the "joys " of cold garages stubborn cars , and know I'm far too old to do any of this myself - but it's great fun watching you do it Jake - great video
Simpsons--point and "HAHA"
Great job, Jake. I have a couple of friends who swear by those cars. I also have friends who swear AT those cars. The one I really love is the burnt orange Dream Cruiser with black and orange interior that belongs to a friend's mother. Just a lot of fun. Next job has to be the lower control arms, because that is what is causing the strange things with the steering. Another alignment after that, too, and you won't recognize how the car drives. Looks like a whole lot of fun.
Those combined pump/sender/filters are pretty standard for anything made beyond 2000...
That fake exhaust tip is priceless. If you ask people who know Chrysler products I believe there was a European designed LeBaron back in the late 80s marketed as a performance model and it looked like dual exhaust but it had a fake tip on one side straight off the showroom floor.
Chrysler moment right here. I’ve been there. I currently own a Chrysler Corp product from this era and it’s kinda being a pain.
"these bushings shouldn't be too bad"
Captured nut inside the body starts spinning.
I recommend getting urethane bushings.
Great video!! I still love the retro style of the PT Cruiser
My grandma had one, turbo model. 2003 Signature series. If I’m not mistaken the non GT turbo PT’s had a smaller turbo. It was a weird yet oddly satisfying car to drive. She bought it almost new. Ended up needing fuel injectors, she sold it cheap to my dads coworker. Shady shop she trusted for years replaced A/C compressor, after telling her that was the issue. Then the A/C still didn’t work. Condenser was the issue. They broke half the front bumper, grille was zip tied, and almost every clip was different. Then it started having issues running. It would stall, buck, and jolt. She bought an accord, was a poor choice. I almost impulsively bought that car to keep because it’s “neat” but it was pretty useless to me. I have a 2013 FCA vehicle. Don’t need to add a old DaimlerChrysler too. Illinois and cars don’t mix well, especially early-mid 2000’s Chrysler products. It was pretty rusty.
I think when you get stumped on figuring out what is wrong just be like tyler and go see wiiizzard! Also i'd just love to see what he thinks of this car sometime!
Someone had a lot of love for that car, probably parked it in the winter, as a boomer would do with this car. Hard to believe how clean it is underneath. Jake, that car really suits you, because your hooptie fleet has such a wide variety of car maker's, show's you will drive anything, and watching you drive the boost car like it's incognito power cracks me up. I still think your channel is underated, because you fix everything on the ground like most of your viewer's. Good on you mate fixing up that once loved boomer car that was only sold because the boomer is dead. I doubt the person who owned this if they were living would have parted with this car.
Thanks fer yer insight Karen...
Now I want one of those! Turbo and manual transmission! Perfect!
What a triumph! Good work there, Jake.
Don’t neglect those turbo oil lines. Most turbos need that oil flow AND pressure to keep the bearing working properly. If you have a leak, you are losing pressure and that bearing could be at risk.
That fake exhaust tip is hilarious, good luck with the car man
I built a turbo pt cruiser years back. It got totalled..i still have the tuned Mopar stage 1 PCM that was flashed a second time to a stage 2.5 they claim. Also have a blue blow off diverter plate for woosh sounds and an aftermarket hood laying around that more attractive than this one in the video, magnaflow exhaust and used a 3" catless downpipe from ebay. Holler if you want any of it..I'm in oklahoma

The plot thickens...
Fast and Furious the PT Cruiser Edition!!!
That's awesome, the jump from 2500rpm was great.
I commented on the other video but the front and rear bumpers look to be APC. The Xenon front bumper was much more aggressive looking and was an actual replacement.
Enjoy your Truck Jake. 👨🔧
That hose that you're referring to as the PCV is the oil blow by line. Kinda sucks that it's just hooked into the intake like that as the oil will pool at the intake of the turbo. Normally this line goes into the side of the air box before the air filter, and a little oil may pool in the bottom of the air box.
The actual PCV valve is coming out of the top of the valve cover on the passenger side and runs to the back of the manifold.
Your opening moments reminded me of how I manoeuvre a few desks away to use the office phone lol! At least the fuel testing kit will come in handy for you again hopefully 👍Nice work, as a micro scrapping woman fixing things is not particularly my remit but there is just something about your videos, they are just so easy to watch, nice commentary, always entertaining and like the hyperspeed with music too👍Great job!
Yea Jake! You have a great car-trick, you've fixed it, and it's fast and fun! Success!!
Just swap the exhaust tips and when the other one gets dirty no one will ever know
How come you didn’t go to JR’s to use lift for the gas tank ?
Little known fact: the time lapse music is a 100% Jake composition. 8th grade on his Casio keyboard. It’s titled Wastegate Time.
I miss my 03 pt gt. Got it salvage with supposed flood damage after Harvey, with only 26,000 miles. It had no damage or even evidence of water entry. Ran great. I didn't like the handling that much though and was afraid I would blow the trans (it was auto) by tuning it any further so sold it to my sister who trashed it in less than 6 months.
I still have the stage 1 Mopar PCM I bought for it ..
If you encounter any future rough running/idling issues, check the 2 gaskets (base and mid) on the intake manifold. Pretty common leakers. Also, the PCV and valve cover breather are notorious for leaking oil. An oil catch-can is very recommended. Cheers!
ThAt was a very enjoyable video. I like seeing the sending unit in the gas tank. I hadn't seen one before. Good job getting the car running well. The pop in the exhaust when you shift is sort of neat.
Great video Jake!
Nicely done!! That looked like you really enjoyed patching up the PT Turbo!! Cheers!! 🤓
My daughter had a PT cruiser as her first car...loved it! quirky, but I could change the oil without having to lift the car at all...
Yup, that's the typical boost leak from not buttoning stuff back up properly: cold side of the intercooler. T-bolt clamps might help keep it on.
Regarding the funny steering feel, it's torque steer and is probably mostly associated with the deteriorated lower control arm bushings.
aligning the motor mounts is crucial. im pretty sure its the same as the neon was in that there is one mount in the frame rail for the engine and two torque struts on top and bottom, all which have specific alignments. i had the "center" go bad on mine at it was the most obnoxious thing ever for daily driving. once i fixed it, it was back to being an actual car. highly suggest looking at some writups on it and fixing.
Yup
"Steering feels funny".......remembers it needs lower control arms. 🤦♂️
I used to own a pt cruiser, after replacing all links and bushing on car it was truly one crazy fun car to drive. So time consuming to replace motor mounts.
Also im not sure if its the same but on the neon, i believe you needed to drill a hole in the subfloor or remove the Kmember to remove that lower control arm.
I remember when the Chevy truck gas pump would go out I don't know how many that I dropped the tank down and held it on my chest and then slid out from under the truck. After a few of those I decided just cut a hole in the bed LOL
I believe there is an adjustment for the upper engine mounts. If it isn't set correctly, you will feel engine vibrations.
Congrats on the fuel fix! Best $40 you ever spent at Harbor Freight!
Love your humor/attitude.
"Oh! It does make boost!"
Great content!!
Bluetooth exhaust is amazing
Those kind of spacers could be culprit of various issues, vibrations in particular. I would look into replacing with hub-centric ones.
That car has suddenly become worthy of your time and effort, with future improvements yet to come. I presume you could grab a used shifter for not a lot and probably get more than your money back selling the short-shift kit (to some barefoot high school pilgrim).
Man, there's not much ole Jake can't do to those cars. He's a wrench for sure!!
They handle a lot better if you lower them (ideally coilovers) and upgrade the sway bars (adding the rear). The mounting holes should still be there from when they had the rear bar in 2002, you just need the mounting hardware and a bar
That fake exhaust tip was way ahead of its time.
Those problems are not that bad to fix buy Darrell cox parts they last longer than factory get a mopar stage 1 ecu from Cindy at modern performance if not equipped u will be super happy with this sleeper/hauler
I'm living vicariously through your Eureka moment of success. There are few things as satisfying as an unexpected successful outcome after self-diagnosis. These videos make me happy. Well done, Jake!
The day after I watched this I saw a PT GT turbo on the road, and I've seen it nearly every day since. Pretty weird how that happens.
Well done Jake!!! 👍
The rims are growing on me.
The lower control arm bushings are shot? I'm shocked.. no wait the opposite of that.
Nice find GT manuals are fairly uncommon to come by, Wondering what else was done to it sounds too good for it to be only a CAI and strait piped.
Better change the oil feed line to the turbo as it tends to coke up if full synthetic oil isn't used. This is due to line running next to exhaust. No rear anti sway bay, not a GT.
The person who thought a fake exhaust tip on this was cool also found a job doing exhaust for the Toyota Camry.
Jake likes spinny bois
You can actually see some of the shaking at 27:23 in the light trails of the cars going the other way
this car must be brought back to its glory. once you get a set of new motor mounts, get all new suspension, and maybe a set of plugs and coils for good measure. Id like to see you make it a dual exhaust.
Jake , Neons and PTs rode like farm wagons . With my bad back I got rid of my neon fast
A broken mopar? You don’t say!
Thesis is probably "entertainment value", and this video hits the mark!
"Big fat American Fiat 500 Abarth." _chef's kiss_
You might need booger bushings for the shifter cables. That always fixes the sloppy shifter feel. Did them in every neon and SRT4 I owned.
Please remove that front wing like thing ,or that front windshield cover
I wonder if they changed the turbo instead of the fuel pump last time
I suspect that was the case.
@@100PercentJake if so, good diag on your part!
That pulling in the wheel is probably just torque steer. It happens a lot with any front wheel drive car that makes any power.
I remember helping a friend of mine had a Dodge van I think it was from the late nineties maybe not could have been a Ford but it had the same kind of configuration a whole coffee can for stuff plastic coffee can but that's what he needed to make his van run
Jake in the UK that is known as a track rod end, Often "Anti-Roll Bar Links" are referred to as tie rods.
I swear when I saw the fake exhaust I almost choked on my coffee, I remember when I saw a BMW X5 diesel with the fake tailpipes built in to the bumper and the real pipe pointing to the road 🤣🤣
Thats a mighty fine srt neon wearing a fat american fiat abarth.
Thanks for the tips and tricks, what to look out for in the PT Cruisers - which are getting rare
LOL, I just noticed the slots on the rotors are reversed, it you swap both sides you'll be all set.
@6:01 certainly didn't expect such nice heat shielding on this car. Must have been a hand me down from Mercedes.
Awesome one woody style just popped up here for 900 but no turbo, bummer
pt geezer! Have a soft spot for them.
i have a love-hate relationship with pt cruisers
This was a great upload Jake.💜
Nice work 👍, doing the gas tank my yourself is a real PITA, glad it solved the problem, makes it worth while.
that's soo much better! I didn't think it had any hope.
What a cool car. Seriously. Fun on a bun. Thank you, Jake!
What a clean install on that exhaust !
Jake, you bought someone’s headache.
I wonder if I can use one of those cheap ultrasonic humidifier things in place of a smoke tester... Maybe throw a little fan on there... You definitely give me suspension courage. Great video! (Idle air control pintle need cleaning? Might help funky idle, even if you think you've mostly got it sorted. It's a popular thing to clean on my Saturn which is also a speed velocity engine)
My 1997 Honda CR-V has over 211k miles and drives perfectly. Good luck with that.
If you stay up an maintenance those really aren't bad utility type vehicles.
Jesus Chrysler, I gotta drop the tank!!
Dude that thing is gangster *searches marketplace for turbo PT cruisers with malicious intent*
Well done. Make sure that timing chain/belt I'd solid and enjoy that sleeper
The only good thing about that thing is that it isn't all rusted out.
