Oh man... Seeing GCN videos hits my nostalgia really hard...Makes me feel so old to think this was almost ten years ago.
Thanks! I'm looking forward testing the RX 480 soon!
My very first card! I had the nitro sapphire edition! For me one of the best looking, classy cards ever made! It was literally the craziest card i have ever seen back then. got it brand new for 300 euro back then to build my very first gaming PC for 650 Euro. My best friend could not believe how gigantic this card is^^
this card never let me down.. sadly i sold the PC later on and the guy told me 4 years later that the card died. Im still thinking of buying it back and trying to fix it.
but shame on amd for canceling driver support so early...
Thanks for sharing and lucky you, beast of a card!
Yes, I still own this card, Gugabyte G1 Gaming R9 390X 8GB. And love to play games.
Powercolor Red Devil R9 390X was my first big boy card. I was sold on the hybrid cooling solution on it, and it held me over for a good while. Thing was a beast that could keep me warm during the winter without needing an extra heater.
512-bit memory bus, now that's a proper GPU! And today the vendors try to sell you 128-bit e-waste for a higher price tag.
@@ashen2192 the 390X is 8 years old and still holds up. The RX 6600 in 8 years down the line will be in a landfill.
@@ProjectPhysX That's a valid point. However, the reason the 6600 will be down in a landfill in 8 years is because of the 9th Gen. consoles. These old early GCN GPUs held on for so long was because the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 basically had lower mid-range GPUs (HD7770 and HD7850, respectively).
Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X's GPU is comparable to RX6700 vs the PS5 is comparable to RX6600, once you factor in the clock speeds and L3 "Infinity" cache. The channel "Iceberg Tech" has published a video recently on the topic if you're interested:

I love the monster spec on some of the older cards. Part of me really wanted the 390X to be faster but I do keep in mind it's 8 year old at this point. New cards come with faster memory so no need for as wide of a bus, but, the overall spec trend is going downwards, that we all agree on
@@ProjectPhysX There is a difference. The 390X was considered a flagship. The 6600 is budget mid tier, so of course it will suffer more in the future. 390X should be compared with 6900XT.
@@mclarenf1gtr99 the 390X was $429, the 6600 is $329. The 6900 XT is $999, a completely different price class.
I'm having R9 380 4GB, still had decent performance. But no updated driver anymore. Too bad
thats a huge crime from amd
Thanks for sharing and I agree, I think they did it bit too early...
NimeZ Modded Drivers might help a card like this in certain games.
I am still using this GPU. It still is going well.
Today I changed the fans since the old ones were kinda giving up performance.
Also changed the cooling pads and the thermal paste.
I went from 94°C top temperature to around 80-83°C.
I wouldnt recomment to play newest games in 1440p with high Graphics but most games nowadays even look awesome without
max graphic settings.
Besides that it still manages to support 120Hz framerates.
Updating to newer drivers is also no problem since there is custom made drivers by a community so new games won't tell you that you cannot play
the game due to outdated drivers anymore.
All in all, if you are looking for a budget card 50-100€ this thing is still in the game.
The R9 390 was an amazing card that aged really well in DX12 & Vulkan titles. Unfortunately it just couldn't hit 1080p 60fps in newer games as time went on. The heaven benchmark highlights it's biggest weakness. Poor tessellation performance
Thanks for checking out the video. I'm pretty sure there's more in that card if it was to be overclocked, if power is not a factor to consider, one can just about still get along with it :)
My first GPU was an R9 390 Sapphire Nitro+. It was fantastic for the time.
Thanks for sharing! Lucky you, great card!!
Back when the mid range war was between the gtx 970 and r9 390 lol. I remember buying a Strix 970, both were awesome cards at the time.
Still a solid card with anermine drivers, pushes good frames at high settings on warzone
The Toxic series from Sapphire are one of my favorite brands. I had a few Sapphire cards over the years, but never a Toxic one. I really must start searching for one :)
Man the r9 390x was my first card and i had alot of fun gaming on it now it sits proudly in my small gpu collection as the card where the gpu hoarding began.
i bought mine for less than £20 untested. So lucky. Insane performance
That's crazy! Daylight robbery at £20!!!
I got my GTX 970 refunded during the "3.5GB Gate" and bought an R9 390 with the money. Really good card power consumption set aside. 8GB on a 512bit bus for less than $400 8 years ago sounds pretty crazy when compared to the current gen GPUs sold at the same price range.
I enjoyed it. Not only did it game well back then it heated the whole of the top floor of the house.
I am still using a HD 5770 for my daughters PC and a R7 240 for my son. I have a GTX 460 in a backupt computer.
Great video as always 👍
Thank you! Appreciate it
The Asus R9 390 was my first big boy card. Got it in 2015. I remember needing it for wolfenstein the new order (the R7 265 wasn't cutting it). I also remember the fans kicking in like crazy when my tank exploded in World of Tanks (Something about the fire effects). It got me through many amazing games and hours of CSGO.
It's when I got into computer hardware in general. Jay2cents, Gamersnexus and LTT (back when they focused on computers). I was overclocking and running the heaven benchmark runs against my friend that had a GTX970.
I ran a couple R9 Furys when they blew them out on sale for half price, because I wanted to run crossfire (even though I knew it didn't make sense)
Then I bought a 980ti used. Strapped a Raijintek cooler on it, and ran that for a few years.
I miss overclocking. I miss the excitement of a new generation of GPUs coming in with amazing new value (the 1070 performed around 980ti levels for a fraction of the price).
I miss when games released that were finished. I miss a lot about those years.
I've been watching you for about a year now and I really enjoy your content. I do reccommend that when you are reading your script that you try and read it more naturally like the ARC unboxing video. keep up the great vids!
Thank you! Appreciate the feedback, there's always room for improvement :)
I'm still using my windforce R9 390x, and it still runs as hot as hell 85c -95c, and as loud as a jet.
Sheeeeeeeet - perhaps a repaste might help ? :)
I wonder how this stands up in 2024 I found one for $14.00 at a thrift store
I am still running a Asus Strix AMD Radeon R9 390x. I am upgrading to a 2060 this weekend. I ran into constant crashes on BG3 using my 390x. The 390x is still a beast with decent frame rates on monden games, but no driver support finally made me switch.😢
Not 390X, but I have an Asus Matrix Platinum 290X on my 2nd PC. Still packs a punch.
I'm still rockin' my trusty Gigabyte R9 390X paired with the mighty i5 6600K! Built this beast back in 2015, and it's been a loyal companion ever since. But now, with the exciting releases of Starfield and Homeworld 3 on the horizon, I'm thinking it's time for an upgrade. So, fellow tech enthusiasts, any suggestions on what I should snag in the 300-500 euro range? Let's turn this old rig into a space-faring powerhouse!
PS: I must say, this card feels like an old Mustang-a true powerhouse with loads of horsepower but lacking a bit of torque.
Still rocking a r3 1200 cpu with r9 390x to play wow wc3 reforged and stacraft at 1080p. Mainly console player. Looking to upgrade to 7600 and 6800xt soon.
I had the 290X Battlefield 4 Edition with an Arctic Accelero Xtreme III to handle the excessive heat output. The authorized reseller even installed the cooler for me and allowed me to keep my warranty which is unusual here in Egypt. Best thing after a breakup. Buy yourself a top of the line GPU and get gaming
Thanks for sharing 👍 was it the blower design ? I bet that AC made all the difference
sorry for not watching these videos as i'm not getting notifications for it and it is on. having said that i have never owned this card or a 290x, but i'd like to as i collect ati/amd cards. the 290x i want is the red and black reference design with the curved red lines as i find that card unique. the last radeon card i got for $20 was an HIS 6870 reference card cib.
No worries, my friend. Notification is broken on UA-cam, haha. I had to get rid of some older gpus, sadly, running out of space to live in 🫣 290X was a great card in my opinion, priced well and aged well too
If I recall, the RX200 and 300 series from AMD, as well GTX900 series from Nvidia, were supposed to be on TSMC's 20nm process. But since 20nm turned out be an absolute disaster (Snapdragon 808/810, anyone?) both Nvidia and AMD chose to steer well clear of that problematic node.
And that's why these high-end RX200/300 series cards ran so damn hot. While the power efficient Maxwell (GTX900) behaved relatively well, the GCN 2 + 3 were doomed!
This whole fiasco kind of reminds me of TSMC's 40nm woes and the hot-as-phuck Fermi (GTX400). AMD's TeraScale 2 (HD5000/6000), namely the HD5870, performed decently because it was smaller and more efficient while the GTX480 with the massive GF100 die basically turned into a meme!
Oh cool! I didn't know, thanks for sharing, interesting reading :)
It might have been the FURY series, as those are the last 28nm high end GPU from AMD.
@@StaelTek Yes, absolutley. The Fiji chip you see on Furys is probably the largest monolithic die AMD has ever made, be it CPU or GPU. At 596mm2, it's basically as large as RTX4090's AD102.
My dad had a 390x since it came out,the sapphire nitro one,he loved it but about 4 years ago it ended up just dying randomly
I had the 390 back in 2016 and 2017.
I had one of these I bought cheap on craigslist while I was waiting for my 1080ti to get RMAd. It was very similar to my previous 290x, and ran a lot cooler.
I had the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 non-X, it seemed to also equivalate GTX 1060 / RX 570 as I was getting the same FPS as those cards were getting in tests and surpassing the GTX 970, but maybe these newer cards got better drivers over time. It held up until 2019-2020 like a champ. Oh and it was 260 $ / Euro brand new in around 2015.
I have a Gigabyte R9 390X OC which I've had in my pc for around 5yrs. Just been researching performance specs for the card with "modern" games and am really surprised by how well it performs (my monitor is only 1080p 60Hz). After my pc crashed it took me a couple of years to be bothered to get it fixed, and have been gaming on an Xbox Series X, and a PS5, on a 4K TV, so have been "spoiled" somewhat - hence the reason there was no hurry to fix the pc. However, my son asked me about getting the pc up and running again, and I was just wondering hoe this card would stack up and, honestly, I think I can hold off on any major upgrades for the time being.
Additionally, I never had any issues with power draw, or heat, but I stuck a monster PSU in my machine, and numerous fans in the case, which are designed to flow air through the case and are very effective for extra cooling.
Thanks for the video - you may have just saved me a not inconsiderable sum of money!
the rx 480 was quite a good card. Cheaper than 390x at launch, performed about the same, gulped 60w less.
my second pc has r9 290.
The 4gb vram is the biggest bottleneck with bigger resolutions.. i know it well as i have 3440x1440p monitor :)
You playing the games at the same settings r9 290x works doesnt let the 390x shine with it's 8gb vram..
Even back in 2016, i was rocking two 290x's in crossfire, the 4gb vram was really hurting performance in BF1 at 2560x1440p
Nexus Tech : the R9 390X 8GB is aging like AMD FINE RED WINE....while the GTX 980 4GB is left behind in dust :).
Eeey! I happen to have two GTX 980's, I shall put this to test!
@@nexus_tech So do I, an Asus Strix GTX 980 4GB (never 2 fan version) and a Gigabyte R9 390 8GB Windforce (the cooler isn't as good on this one as it was on my first MSI R9 390X 8GB Gaming 8G that I regret selling).
yes there was such a card I bought already used from xfx, high temperatures under 90 degrees, then I took Rx-580 8gb from sapphire, much quieter and more economical, and recently switched to Rx-5700xt msi, a little noisy, but after lowering the voltage it works Amazing ) if you get 390x at a low price and for example from sapphire, then why not)
i got this card 5 months ago and im not disapointed, but i have a CPU FX 4100 so i think thats my biggest problem, but i dont know you tell me what i should do about my rigg?
how about the driver support for old GPU such as this one? will i have trouble buying this kind of legacy hardware with no more updated support drivers?
Never owned one but if I did, I would still be using it today unlike the 970 from that time.
I'm looking forward testing the GTX 980 soon, we shall see how it does haha!
I need a sapphire one of these. I have my friends old MSI model sitting in my graphics card bin but sapphire is the best
Imagine the pair in crossfire! Hey do me a favor actually and do a video on rx Vega crossfire. I killed two EVGA Power supplies with that combo and the power play driver mod
I had dual sapphire R9 390's in crossfire on my old rig i built back in early 2016 thinking crossfire/SLI was still going to be a thing 😂. I eventually upgraded to a RX 6700 XT when AMD abandoned driver support for the 300 series.
I had/have one and wish to use it, but it somehow fried "I think" off of playing unturned which makes not sense
Try minez drivers it breaths life back into it even tho and said gcn was dead
Try it again in chimera is with open source Linux drivers
Still got a ATI 1900pro, hd 4770, hd 5770, 280x, r9 fury tri-x laying around here 🤔
i have an R9 NANO laying around. wanna borrow it for testing one day?
Hello mate! Thanks for your offer, really kind :) I bought very cheap NANO few months back so all good!
@@nexus_tech that’s nice! Otherwise it could be an idea for Crossfire 💪🏻
What do you use to clean the thermal paste,I know it's isopropyl but does it need to be a certain percentage, like not diluted etc
I'm using 99.8% Isopropyl Alcohol :)
Bro can you compare gt 210 with hd 630
GT210 is a lot worse.
I wouldn’t call the 390 ‘forsaken.’ That title properly belongs to the R9 Fury X.
its just a rebranded 290x and there were models od the 290x with 8gb vram soo nothing new
Uh... Fury X hello?
Only 4GB, eewww.
This old GPU still playing newest game, this only show how games stagnated. If 8 years ago, newest at that time games could be player at 8 years old GPU would be weird ;)
Simply game studios making games for 95% of hardware, not for 60%, which would long time ago kill cards as this. But most to complain are consoles, PS4 and Xbox... they hold game studios from going big. We change consoles, now they have 8c16t and 16GB of RAM with NVMe SSD and PC gamers with old as universe hardware now crying...
shame there's no gtx 980 comparison
GT 210 VS HD 630
I used to have an R9 390 Tri x as well, ended up switching to an RX 6800xt just for power consumption, temperatures and overall efficiency, it was a great card when it had driver support I would say, it will always be a great card to remember :')
PD: I managed to catch that card for about $98 at 2020, they were hard times for GPU's
