Hi! I was hesitant about recording on this piano because I know some people out there are going to complain about it being out-of-tune, but at the same time, I really appreciate this old piano's sounds, so voila! I was fortunate enough to be practicing on this 1929 piano in New York during my winter break from Yale. Fun fact - this is the same piano that the original Beaux Arts Trio rehearsed on. It has been 2 days since I recorded this and I wish I had made more rubato changes in the opening theme. That said, I actually spent 2 hours trying to record this. I spent a long time trying to adjust to the different quirks of the piano's action (i.e. some keys were heavier than others hence struggling with voicing), playing over and over again to make myself play more fluidly, while also starting and stopping a whole lot during recording due to NY traffic noises 😱😳 Given how much effort I spent trying to record and play this well, I decided to post this anyway because this would be a preview for my Singapore recital on February 17th, 2019. I don't know how to describe it but this piano sounds "cozy"

Träumerei means daydreaming so cozy is very fitting

I'm not much of a Schumann listener, but I knew something was different in this piece.
I couldn't help but write a poem (I'm kind of a newbie and it may be a bit abstract. I hope you'll understand) about this piece in accordance to the current date. Thus,
A Dedication to Tiffany Poon
It was a long road
Down through the meadow
Of the winter storm
At the blizzard’s dorm
It was dreary yet merry
With blows of snow

The Schumann Kinderszenen are pure poetry put in musical form. Simple, unpretentious, beautiful. Especially this No. 7 and No. 13, "The Poet Speaks".

This piece and the way you play it just makes me sad. Ironic because I’m still an angsty teenager but somehow it makes me sad and cozy at the same time.
Also, whenever you play, there’s just colors bursting everywhere and so much emotion and dynamics! It always surprises me that a piano could produce a sound with such intensity and meaning. Your interpretations are amazing and you really show what music is about, feelings that you hear. I don’t understand how a human can coax sounds that beautiful out of inanimate objects, or how we feel certain emotions when we hear certain sounds, but your music is so alive and natural. It’s so human.

This was the perfect day to listen to and appreciate Traumerei, a piece I haven’t really listened to in years. When our parents used to take us out on drives or wherever we had to be, my mom would play Van Cliburn’s greatest classical romantic hits in the car and this piece was one of the pieces on the track. Then, one of our aunts bought the sheet music and learned it. Brings back fond memories! Happy New Year!

Beautifully played. A pedant might complain about the piano but I reckon its tone is just about perfect for this piece. We’re so pampered these days with digital recordings and pianos in perfect tune that sometimes it’s just too perfect. No, play that old piano as much as you can. It is wonderful and full of character.

I have listened to this piece hundreds of times by dozens of Pianists, but what I have gotten now from your playing is so so special...nothing compares to it except that legendary recording by Alfred Cortot. Obviously your recording was done in a condition which is far from ideal one but still I can say so. I really wish some day you will record this piece professionally and am looking forward to seeing you play it in Japan! I will be there by any means!!
Hi Tiffany, I love the sound of the piano you are playing. One of my pianos is also a Mason & Hamlin from 1905, a model AA 6 feet Grand. It sounds impressive like yours, not because it is out of tune, but because it is a noble instrument, ultimately solid, from the "golden era" of pianos, 115 years ago. It has nothing to envy the modern concert grands. This sound is a perfect match for Schumann's Kinderszenen, of which you play No. 7 exquisitely.

As fo the piano, it's 90 years old and obviously hasn't been restored, therefore the quirks you mention, but is still in great shape all things considered. From what you mention about the Beaux Arts Trio it can be considered a historical artifact.
