- Taking a trip back to 1965...
This might be the best rocker the Beatles ever recorded. It's certainly in the conversation. There's just so much to love here. Given my penchant for accuracy, my apologies for not recording this at Stonehenge!
In no particular order...
First, John was clearly a secret try-hard on piano. I found isolated tracks on UA-cam of John's playing on the Hohner Pianet, and man. John's part is incredibly inventive and surprisingly complex! Like Paul's bass playing, no verse is exactly the same. His syncopations, his aggressive, slightly-ahead-of-the-beat timing, and his chord choices were just stunning. He revealed later piano talent on songs like "Imagine," "Oh My Love," and, much later, "Real Love," but he clearly had a ton of talent by 1965. I would wager he went home and secretly practiced/rehearsed this, since somehow the band only needed 2 takes for the actual recording (recorded Feb. 17, 1965 in the same session as "You Like Me Too Much").
By the way, John's playing a Hohner Pianet, which are famously hard to find. To recreate this, I created my own Hohner Pianet VST. Using the Wurly preset on Presonus Studio One, I fiddled with compression, EQ, and a few other effects to arrive at a surprisingly close sound! This is my first cover that actually shows my midi interface, which I use whenever there's a non-piano part involving keys (i.e. the brass and strings in the Abbey Road Medley cover).
Also, Ringo's drumming is immaculate! Dude could somehow stay perfectly on the right tempo AND rush his fills to add incredible spark and drive to the number. We also see a return of the "I Feel Fine" beat, which is ridiculously fun to play. Note the little simultaneous "trills" on the bell of the crash and the tom. Plus, some really fun bass drum doubles!
I should note I swapped out the ride and the crash here, which Ringo clearly did too for live performances and in the studio. That driving right hand on the crash brings such spark to the recording.
Note: I do not smoke and I strongly discourage smoking! I stole this discarded box from a friend just for accuracy (Ringo apparently used a cigarette box...I had been using an ugly old wallet). I'm a former pack a day smoker and current marathon runner. Couldn't do it without quitting smoking, which I did cold turkey 6 years, 7 months ago.
Stay tuned for more from "Help!" Let me know what you think!

Admit it. You're a cyborg!
🤖
Yes he is! 😂
Love it
Nobody:
Paul right before the guitar break: "yyesss"
Second only to his "pop-a-lop-top" during the "I've Just Seen a Face" solo. Dude was funny.
Great! Brilliant job catching those two odd 7th chords at 2:04 on the e-piano! I always wondered if John meant to hit that but I always liked it.
2:30 *BIG EXPLOSION*
Only Beatles fans will understand the reference
my favourite song of this album
0:23 those chords John plays on the pianet are so beautiful
Definitely one of the underrated Beatles' songs! Only discovered the song recently alongside seeing and hearing it on the Help! movie and I loved it. Yours is a very faithful recreation! Keep on rocking, Michael!
Very underrated! And I also love that scene from "Help!" One of the first music videos ever made...
@@MichaelSokil Yes, it was a very cool scene!
the fact you gave up smoking is a BONUS FOR US ALL....we get to listen to these FANTASTIC sound tracks knowing your health is in good shape lol
Paul played this song in concert and it was a highlight - sounds great live - would have been a number one record if released as a single -- fine job here Mike you nailed it
Still out in the fields of protection of the British Army. I remember them looking sooo cold, especially Ringo. Well done Michael. Wow!! Doug
Love this song! you're great! there used to be another guy that did the same thing with Beatles songs.
ザナイトビフォアは素晴らしい演奏ですね。特にサビのドラミングの3連タムは皆2連タム連続になってるがちゃんと再現していますね‼️ありがとうございました‼️🎶
Spot on! This was my favorite song for the longest time.
"Fire the nasty thing!" "Missed, you naughty boy!"
It's such a great song. Even John liked it!
MY FAVORITE ALSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent. You even got that smooth little off beat swing thing Ringo does just before the vocals come in👍
Love the HELP soundtrack, great 👍😊👍😊👍😊
It sounds exactly like the original wow just wow!!😮😮
One must really LOVE the Beatles to go to such extremes with vintage musical instruments and other sound equipment ! It is so good that the Beatles music is still ALIVE due to such enthusiasts like Michael ! Keep on doing this !
You're completely right, Sergej! Another fine example of such enthusiasm is "The Analogues" from the Netherlands.
You were so Sincere !!!
Thank you so much guys..... What a gig!
Awesome bro
And it's a beautiful Sunday. Thanks Mr Sokil!
You're quite welcome!
Fantastic
Excellent!!
So good!!!!!
Bravo!
Superb, Michael!
Amazing man great job pretty good
I'd never noticed until now that the drum pattern in the middle 8 is basically I Feel Fine rehashed. On the album it's buried under the maracas and the vocals.
Yep, it's nearly identical. The only difference is the bass drum pattern!
There are no bad Beatle songs (well, maybe a couple) and so far no bad recreations. You've done it again.
There are certainly a few clunkers on both ends, I know of a few covers I've put out that I already want to redo (and "Don't Pass Me By" is rancid).
@@MichaelSokil "Don't Pass Me By" was second on my list, right after Revolution 9, not that that's even a song.
I think the White Album was the least good one.
@Nathan Geiling you’ll need to wait and see!
@@joestarr05 It had great songs but wasn't very cohesive. It was just a collection of way too many songs and the fact that they didn't really work together on it made it less like a Beatle album and more like a bunch of solo recordings. But in 1968 it seemed like a goldmine for Beatle fans.
Michael, I loved, loved, loved your instrumental version of the song!!! Bravo!!!
AMAZING JOB!!! But may- be you could turn up the vocals a little? ;-)
(Am I the first one to make this remark?) Where are you located?
Thank you so much for this. I've had lots of fun singing along and watching you play the individual instruments. I see you're on instagram. I'll look you up. Thanks so very for sharing this underrated brilliant song!
Wow, i love it ! Thank you
Lovely! 😎😎😎😎
omg man!!!!
Definitely used the isolations on your channel to study this!
@@MichaelSokil I think we all do 😉
Simply amazing.
Many thanks!

Watching your progression via Instagram in putting this together made this so much more enjoyable for me. Your passion in bringing us these recreations is a gift I am truly grateful for! Thank you as always for sharing! Whenever I’m having a bad day, there are always your videos to help make it better
That means so much to me, I'll definitely post more progress videos. Learning these songs is the most rewarding part of this process, and I love being able to share a piece of that process. I'll never forget the joy I felt when I "unlocked" that outro riff in "Real Love." It was like solving a mystery, I couldn't wait to share it. And this hobby helps carry ME through bad days too, so that's exactly what it's meant to do!
Great playing ! Love the upbeat sound ! Love the music !
Holy Crap! Sums it up. Simply amazing
Wow, thanks!
Man you really made this one swing like crazy. It gets better with every listen. I've got a Pianet N in the attic - gotta pull it out now.
Awesome!! love your channel 💞💞
very good
Phenomenal cover. Amazing detail. Definitely the best cover I’ve heard of this song! Keep up the good work man! Love hearing these
Glad you liked it!!
とても良い❤
Excellent work, wonderful performance.
Much obliged, thanks for watching!
MERCI !
I really liked that.
So what was all that about having a few weeks off and stuff.
And getting in first with the Stonehenge remark, I had a sarky comment all ready!!!
Great stuff and what about the snare damping, you thought we wouldn't notice?
It's been about 2 weeks since my last batch! But yes, I do intend to pace this a bit slower (I told myself that for "A Hard Day's Night" too though and churned them out pretty fast, so who knows). And yes, cigarette pack for accuracy - but I am not a smoker!
Great job !!
Well played!
Thanks so much!
@@MichaelSokil you're welcome!!
Nice instrumental! It sounds really good
Appreciate it!
Isn’t it an A major, not minor, on the start of the middle 8’s? Great cover as usual mate 👍
Because of content like this, I'm about to pay for UA-cam …
Muy buen trabajo. Excelente !!!
Please cover Another Girl!
Been waiting for this cover, hasn’t disappointed, love it
Thanks Graham! Put a lot of love into this one.
I know that you usually dont do tutorial, but a keyboard tutorial would be very nice!
Love this so much. It's BBC version. I really love that version.
yeessss!
0:06 Paul's buried noodling. Never knew that too, and this wasn't the first time he did that. The first time was on Ticket To Ride.
He was a noodle burier, for sure.
Shooooooore
I think the last time that happened was in Taxman after the solo.
👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
I really don’t know tish song but greate cover!
Well ya do now!
Супер !!!! ...
Wow, G*R*E*A*T*!
Thanks so much!
You are an amazing Beatles cover artist!
Can you please do I Feel Fine
Oh, you have some nice maracas Buddy. What a fun song to play. Trying to figure out the keyboard setting. I recall reading in Andy’s Book that the Beatles heard a new keyboard sound on another song so they immediately ordered a Fender Rhodes stage piano. When it finally arrived, they sent it up and played it. Nope, that wasn’t the sound they had heard . They had wanted a Wurlitzer A200. Now, later on they added Billy Preston to play Keys on many of their songs, but Preston played the Rhodes on songs like Get Back. Am I mistaken, or were you playing a Wurlitzer patch on this song? Whatever it was, it sounded great.
Yep, take a look at my description for details but I used the Wurly preset in Presonus Studio One and fudged around with compression, EQ, even hissing noises to simulate the Pianet sound. I'll post the isolated part in a week or so!
@@MichaelSokil Sorry, It was five am this morning when i received the notification that you had posted this gem. I did not see the notation that lead me to the description. Now, I see. It is all laid out there in glorious detail. Regarding the Hohner Pianet, the only other musicians I have ever seen playing one was Robert Lamm from the Group Chicago and of course, Stevie Wonder. Yessir, your tinkering resulted in a great sounding Wurli patch.
@@MichaelSokil Sorry to ask another question but you have piqued my interest in the Presonus Studio One DAW. Are you using the actual Presonus dedicated Mixing board, or just the PC based software application? I acquired a DAW many years ago and it came with Ableton. try as I would, I could not wrap my head around it and settled for garage Band on my wife's Apple Macbook Pro. I have also downloaded Audacity and tinkered with it but the learning curve is just as steep and its not something I do everyday. I am looking for something that is quick and easy to master.
@@paulmac3042 I record all instruments into the PreSonus 1824c interface plugged directly into my HP laptop. I listen back in StudioOne, find the best take (usually the last one), and add EQ/compression. I then import those tracks into Audacity, line them up in sync, and do more mixing. I almost always go back into StudioOne to find other takes, sometimes editing together multiple takes. I even re-record things I'm unhappy with (e.g. I needed a few tries to get the right tone for the "Night Before" solo - I tried the Strat and Gent bridge pickups before settling on the neck pickup). I guess I should mention that I am certainly no tech wiz, and StudioOne and Audacity are both very easy once you get familiar with them. StudioOne took a few weeks to figure out, but without any lessons or guide I got there eventually. Stick with it!
I forgot a step! The last thing I do is import the finished mix BACK into StudioOne, where I add a final layer of light compression, EQ, reverb, and a neat Abbey Road plug-in called "Vinyl," which simulates the sound of a record. Note that these are all added to the entire mix, not individual tracks. This last step really takes the mix back into the 60's. My final Audacity mix sounds modern, but this last step makes it sound much more authentic / vintage. Kind of like rubbing dirt on a photo to add film grain?
You are incredible! Beautifully done.
♥️
Yea
Love to add vocals to your work!
Great! Where did you get your Country Gent? It looks much darker than the ones made today. I was 11 when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan and from the color pictures at the time I always thought George's Gent was black. It wasn't until many years later I heard it was walnut colored. I still think they might have had it painted. It still seems much darker than all the ones in tribute bands today.
I don't personally thing George had the gent painted, there's a picture of him form '63 holding the gent, the pictures in colour and its definitely walnut. What a beautiful instrument!
Can I know the piano chords?
Wonderful work btw
Nice cover! Are you doing 1965 songs now or just freelancing “whichever era comes to mind”? like the old days?
I'm doing the entire "Help!" album!
Que platillo es?? Un ride o un crash-ride???
Meu canal de karaokê dos Beatles... kkkk
Hey Mr. Sokil, I was wondering if there was any particular reason why you have the microphone set up for the electric guitars on the body like that. I've noticed it in lots of videos. Do you just leave it there for when you play acoustic, or does it serve a purpose in these mixes?
It serves no purpose whatsoever - but it looks great!
Awesome! but in drums the 2nd fill in was with tombs not with snare. :D
Which fill?
@@MichaelSokil Thanks for the answer maestro! the fill is in minute 2:04 - 2:06 in the original recording sounds like tomb not snare or maybe Ringo used a different hit on the snare, but to me sounds like the high tomb. Regardless my coment or opinion.. I truly admire all your work, hope youtube recognizes you a lot and the people! I'll subscribe ;)
What made you choose the Gretsch for the rhythm part? Though arguably true, but some people think it's the Stratocaster.
I tried a Strat (spoilers: I bought a Sonic Blue Strat!), and it was too thin. Gretsch sounded much closer, though it was likely the Tenny.
True, I also compared this to Beatles Guitar Secrets and it sounds close, but it's not what the Beatles had. So I think it's safe to say that George used the Tennessee Rose like in the movie.
This is like the same thing in Day Tripper. Some people think it's the Stratocaster, others think it's the Gretsch. And some people think that George used a Gibson ES but I never seen it in the studio before.
@@joestarr05 Yeah, since there are no photographs for most of their sessions and a lot of guitars can sound very similar, it's mostly guesswork. I try to be open minded.
@@MichaelSokil you got a blue strat? Did you send mal evans to retrieve it :P
It's really good to know that you smoke Marlboro!
Note: I do not smoke and I strongly discourage smoking! I stole this discarded box from a friend, just for accuracy (Ringo apparently used a cigarette box). I'm a former pack a day smoker, and current marathon runner. Couldn't do it without quitting smoking, which I did cold turkey 6 years, 7 months ago.
Piano tutorial?
Just out of curiosity, are you a guitar player that learnt drums or drummer that learnt guitar? I'm going to say guitarist first?
I actually started learning drums and guitar at exactly the same time! My guitar skills are more developed, probably because I don't practice drums except when I'm recording. Anecdotally I've found that I need more warmup and several practice takes before creating useable drum tracks, whereas I don't need much warmup at all on guitar.
I was never a big fan of this song. Felt the guitar was slightly out of tune. Thought it was one of their weaker efforts. Until now. I think you did it better than they did!
The highest praise! Thank you!
It’d be nice if you didn’t hide the guitar chords
私のアオハル。
Sound 👍and Mix👎
that doesn't make sense
@@MichaelSokil porque no tiene sentido, es mi opinión, y el sonido es espectacular pero la mezcla no encuentro que este bien, como en el álbum que tampoco están bien
Wow!!
