I noticed you were just a tad quiet during that fog session when the box was breathing it in, or rather choking, LOL.. the air isn't flowing right, design issue
Big D ,you remained professional during that moment,👍. Keep the brutal & Honest vids coming. By the way, got 4 of the L7X 12s in the garage, bought 2 and financed 2, didn't want to part ways with a little over 3 grand all at once. As long as you take advantage of the 100 day buyout, no interest will incur
I tried to tell yall but you didn't listen.
That's why it took so long to come out. They had to make alot of recones before they could put the sub on the market. Those subs are paper weights
All I can say is the Kicker Solo X has a rock solid voice coil but the need to start using more glue on the spider landing and coil to spider connection.
Damn I didn't think that would be sacrilegious to upgrade holes..
But I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it😂 I would have done the same
It seems that Bobby would’ve explained why he dislikes the threaded inserts. Especially since he was so passionate about it. I use them all the time and I love using them. I’ve never had anything go wrong by using them. Kicker also uses a type of threaded insert in their quad box.
You can infer from the short clip that threaded inserts are difficult to align based on a pen marking then drilling. Far too easy to install slightly cocked and not get good, flat contact with the screw to basket interface. It will lead to uneven contact between the basket and enclosure, causing air leaks.
@@envisionelectronics if his reason is as simple as what you’re saying, it was a bit of an overreaction
I sure hope the GP Enclosure does not hit 150
That can be reglued and still be used just fine
Nothing wrong with inserts at all.
Threaded inserts are fine if you mount the insert on the opposite side like a nut, use adhesive when you put them in, tighten them up prior to actually installing the sub - in and out over and over again, no issue.
Every “expensive” box I have. I have threaded inserts. It just makes sense for the longevity
The L7s have a sound of their own. A tight punch tone to them. I had a set of 12s when they first released them way back in the day. It was a sealed enclosure being powered by the ZR1000 in a 94 cutlass supreme and it turned heads all the time. Good times.
The problem with wood screws is that fluted head design that doesn’t seat correctly against the flush rim of the driver. Sometimes it will actually dent in the rim of the driver
It’s amazing how much that coil took! 5x more than rated. Jeees!
That smoke at the beginning of the video had me trolled! Haha! 😂
There are alout of subs out there than can do that without a Sweat And not grenade it's plastics lol
Goteem!
Let's be honest if I've purchase the box i can pretty much do as i please😂😂😂
Agree especially if its $1000+.
😂🤣💯💯
That enclosure should already come with thread inserts
yeah, at that price it should.
Unless this guy invented wood itself, I don't care what he built his boxes from, his level of craftmanship or hours spent on a box, if you constantly screw into wood, it will eventually strip and you'd get air leaks from the holes.
And if you angle the ports to blow over the subwoofer, you'd never be able to test if the woofer mount holes are leaking, but it doesn't change the fact that it would be.
Loving all the sub testing going on around here nowadays thank ya much keep em coming big d
That's very impressive for it to take that kind of power and still be functional
Yeah, you could hack that back together (both times) and take it easy on it.
The sub can handle the power, it just needs to be held back from over excursion.
It’s also impressive how easy they are to recone too
I'm not impressed. It has a 3.75" coil, and should handle power better. You shouldn't look forward to buying recone because the sub is supposed to last at least 2 years on rated power. It looks like this one isn't going to last on rated long-term.
Pretty common for a sub to take a lot of power on burps
I’m a big fan of the threaded inserts with machine screws. Yeah it might be overkill for most applications, but I always use them because they’re cool and look professional. Great job Big D.
I think the main problem is how small kicker had to make the spiders to make that insert work. Its like having the drawback of a 4” coil being a limited spider area but you still only have a 3” coil. I didnt like the look of the small spider as soon as i had it in hand. Severely limits performance and is obviously a weak point. There must be a lot of stress and tensions on that small spider. Ya 11,000 watts over and over i can see damaging the first spider. 5,000 watts shouldn’t separate the cone from the coil though. I see reliability issues in the new solo x’s future. Definitely don’t run over rated power.
not just power. dont run them in too large of a box either.
@@CVLova a large box is totally fine as long as it's in spec for that sub. I run a 3.25cu ft box with my 12" comp Q for over a year now and it's worked like a champ
You say don't run over rated power but you say 5k is fine? That's double rated power
@@sissymarylen15741a not all the time. What their talking about is bass "burps" it a temporary bass note at high power to try and get a high SPL number. Run it at 5000w on music and it'll burn up real quick
@@sissymarylen15741a no 5k is definitely overrated power and more than I would put to that subwoofer. I think that people thought this was going to be a woofer you could throw twice rated power at. It’s obviously not. I think if you want it to be reliable you need to stay around 2 to 3k. I still don’t understand why they took a basket big enough for a decent size spider and put probably the smallest spider into it in its class just for the capability of the the drop in recone. I would have rather had a decent size spider for a 3” coil. It’s one of the main benefits of 3” compared to 4” and they took it off the table.
techmaster peb still shaking boxes, underrated dj.
"it's time to jam"
The man stands behind his work!!!!
Even though he got his 💰💰, he still was like dont mess up my work!!!!👍👍👍
And this is why I'm a from day one kicker fan! Especially the solo brick line. Ever since I seen them in a magazine I middle school. I had 2 15 dual 4ohm vc solo berics on a 4500 mono block d class. Still favorite system I've owned.
But this video shows how bad this sub is
I remember the early days of the solobarics, they were well known for the voice coil former shrinking and grabbing hold of the pole piece. A guy here in Perth (Western australia) that went through a stack of them ended up swapping to JL subs in his chase for 160dB in his toyota starlet. This was 20 years ago.
JL subs cost 10x as much
@@biggestthreattoyourexistenceThat's because they're worth it.
@WSKRBSCT I have a W6 that cost me just as much as this SoloX 12 that ill be picking up today so I am more than curious about cost over performance with this one. I also have a HCCA 10 and have compared the two, the JL and the Orion, built boxes to the exact spec for each woofer and that Orion 10 seems to be a much louder woofer, being smaller and costing half the price is why I am commenting. Don't get me wrong that W6 is a nice woofer and sounds good but as far as competition goes, I can assure they are not match for the Orion's in priceable sound and air movement and this is comparing a 10 Orion to a 12" JL. Maybe on a DB meter it might show something different, but I doubt it. I'm curious about this SoloX so once I build a box for it I am going to compare the three. Im comparing dollar for dollar and so far Orion has the win.
@@WSKRBSCT I think they are worth it as far as quality goes but as far as making the ground shake not so much dollar per dollar.
@@biggestthreattoyourexistence no you are wrong
People going off about it failing.... ON 4-5 TIMES THE RATED POWER! smh.
Wow Kicker has a rock solid voice coil!!
I took 2-RF 15" P3's in a 8.0cuft 38hz tuned box full electrical and a JP33, I sent over 6k to 2- 600w rms 2.5" voice coils with a max of 30mm XmaX both ways, and they've yet to smoke or rip the spiders. Now not full blast for hours, but you get the picture. I want some RF Power subs but I'm not paying $1500 a sub. RF has lost their mind on prices and still made in China, unlike the beginning when they were made in Tempe,AZ.
Hell yea same here I have the p3 12s d4 2 of em running them on a jp 2300 purple one and I want the power series too but for that much idk man
@The BoofGod I've been a RF fan for many years. Once they shipped all their products to China, I hesitated but still bought. There is no way I'm buying any Power series subs. They are on meth if they think I'm giving $1500 for a 16" sub. I could buy 6 NVX 2K rms 46 total XmaX for that price, and $1500 for a Power 2500? Uh, no. Can get a Korean made JP 83 for almost the same price with 4-5 times the power. They have lost this once die hard Fosgate fan.
I was just at Slamology yesterday and seen maybe 4-5 big L7X builds. They..... get.....down!!
It was obvious it wasn't the voice coil from the last video. I made a comment on it that you could see the cone had buckled in one of the corners. Although I didn't expect the spider to be as severely damaged as it turned out to be.
Gately box is beautiful but so dang expensive.😮
Very impressive love Kicker
Mr.Gatley
Very wrong way to talk to someone who has your box
My dude. I’ll put threaded inserts in EVERY BOX I want to
There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with what you did..nothing at all
He literally tells you. “Use screws until they are messed up and then use a bigger screw…wtf??
My Konaki DD copies used to do that before PSI upgraded them. After 8 yrs, they still pounding 💪🏾😎👊🏾
I'm a 3d printing geek and have several files for 3d printed speakers
The printed parts are the Frame made of ASA which is similarto ABS but stronger, the cone which is a polymer carbon fiber blend, and the surround & spider made from 95A TPU
It's just a nerdy hobby for me and I'm working off other designers files (designers that are way smarter than me) but trust me when I tell you there is some incredible leaps forward in 3d printing technology and you will soon see designs that only a 3d printer can pull off that will surpass the limits of any other speaker design currently available
Keep your ear to the ground on that one
Love your work mate from cheap amps too pushing these bad boy subs to There limit your videos never disappoint 👌
This is the way I look at it .. if I buy something .. it belongs to me.. i do as I please with it
Mans literally BLEW this sun apart!! Was not expecting that!
Honestly, looks like you could have shoved that spider back into place/forced the spider cap back into place, maybe a little epoxy, and re-installed!
That is a beautiful gately Box... I wish I had a gately fir under my ford f150...
Too much powa baby boi!
One thing to remember. If you’re going to use straight up screws you gotta use pan head screws. Bugle tip screws bend the basket and can compromise the seal between the box and sub. I’m surprised Bobby Gately didn’t mention that. Also, damaging the basket should void the warranty of the sub.
What screws do you recommend?
Its in his comment. Pan head screws.
Awesome video Big D 👏. Can't wait for the next one keep up the good work 👍
I like that enclosure design with the sideways ports. I just wonder if it affects the efficiency at all or causes any cancellation since the ports are loading against one another firing directly toward one another and perpendicular straight across the cone area of the woofer. Not saying it does it's just something I've never seen before who knows maybe it enhances the output. Would be nice to see some testing on that box versus an equivalent volume one with ports forward or rear.
This was exactly what crossed my mind after seeing this box.
Watching the thermals confirmed to me that I would not want a square woofer. It showed extra heat in the corners, which makes sense considering each point along the short curves will have a different radius and flex length and not have a smooth motion. M&M Godfather 15’s for life!! If I could ever find them again!! Lol
Great vid man. Lots of things were learned here. 😎👍👍
Need a good brake in and then throw that power at it when the spider is soften up a bit. Probably get better results
Makes sense to at least install the sub with screws once before installing the inserts to ensure they find a home in the proper orientation
That 808 dream hits really hard
I prefer the term letting the genie out the speaker when I have smoked one! Or two maybe over the years. 😂
That smoke machine reminded me when I had my home system. 17 hooked a bunch of flashlights up to the speaker wires so they would go to the beat then I'd hot box a couple cigarettes. Get the light beam through the smoke effect lol
Impressive that the coil wasn't the downfall to the sub failing
The only kicker I have ever blown with a refurbished S12L7 with a JL 1000/1.
The master of disaster! Extreme stress testing ftw 😂
Yeah for $699 im just gonna grab something sundown or DB that can handle 5 6 or 8k. I got 4 x12 v3s when they were on introductory for $ 541 only 649 now i think id go that route imho. threaded inserts with triple baffels all the way. 😂 😂😂
DANG! That speaker is a BEAST!!!! I'd love to have one, but can't really afford it. 😢
Can you do a comparison video for the box downfiring vs firing backwards? What they each meter at versus each other.
Insane power, like to see more from this
Well, I would say that was a good test there Big D. Now they know how much they can take and make the necessary changes if they can to their subs to make them better.
Great video! Gately makes some awesome boxes that I have seen. Every time I meet a fellow bass head Kicker always comes up in conversation with positive memories!
That guy was mad because you made his box better. lol😂😂
I’ve got two evl 12’s in a 2 12 armor box all skar on a 4500.1rp skar amp up against my trailblazer hatch and it hasn’t broke the window yet
You might be able to reglue the detached spider... it wont be easy but i bet you could force it back in place and glue it with epoxy or E6000
It’s going back to KICKER for analysis
he did have fun with this demo 😄
All glue! Dayum that motor structure got POWA! Kicker could use some more adhesive if they can, the coil shouldn't be held back. Or that's reserved for the 15". HifiVega on the backstage pass, probably whispering "turn it up"
Now I know to attach some paper to my port to get louder 😅 talk about more sound lol, excellent video brotha!
Love the video man!
The issue is you stop the speaker completely stopping the air flow and allowing the coil to over heat .instead on turn the the volume down and let the speaker cool down then stopping the sound .
That sub is no joke. I want one now.
I have used T nuts and see them on most Pa speaker and Instrument cabs and amps. Surprised he doesn't like them. I wonder what the reasoning is.
He was just butt hurt someone pointed out his insanely expensive box should have come with inserts to begin with. 😆👍
@@brian6029 lololol
Very impressive.
The box is designed for one specific sub, you shouldn’t have had to drill anything. It’s not like the manufacturer is making the box universal for any round sub
Interesting video. I like what you're doing.
Hcca’s use that same type of recone feature and honestly it’s amazing
Thanks for the video!!!!!!!!
Got some older kicker stuff been bumping for 10 years on the same stuff
I bought a Gately enclosure, and I installed inserts. No issues so far. It would help a lot if he explained why not, but if he says don't use them because he simply doesn't like them, then he really shouldn't make comments like that.
I was waiting to see this. I seen this woofer at a sound shop....got some weight on it for sure...
Big D, purhaps a dunce hat to put on during the livestreams, will help ease the tension. 😄😉
What's the purpose of having those ports wrap around the front of the box like that?
Nice durability testing👍🆙️😉
The spider landing size is too small. Fatal design flaw. Doesn’t matter if it was on 10k+ watts. Usually a cone will get destroyed before the spider fails.
that's what I'm thinking bro. they need to address those spiders giving before the coils do. a lot of people are saying the spiders are too small, which I agree. but also even if you burp for 4 seconds it SHOULDA been able to last just a bit longer. I believe he didn't break it in properly and just rushed into making the video for testing purposes
Very Efficient Is woofer keep it up kicker
I was cringing when you put those inserts in. Lol. Glad I’m not the only one.
That drop in recone is just like my Orion spl15 hcca
Good stuff Derek.
Nice
Gately doesn't like the inserts... Why? Does he know there is an issue with them, or does he just not like them?
Giving 4x power till it shreds. Really impressive subwoofer. id buy that for a dollar 😁👍
What about 700 of them dollars? Haha
@@busterbarlow9094 I'll pay more for lesser power speakers like the image dynamics IDQ 4 and the JL W6-13SM. As long as you playing with the specs I think you'll get a lot of life out of that speaker.. for $700 a one-time buy it's a pretty good deal versus $300 at Walmart and buying it four times
@@ehrenkrause9861 totally different sub though. JLw6 is an sq sub.
Can you do a Stetsom Bravo Flex 3k? Maybe even a derby vs Taramps Smart Bass 3k. A pretty even battle of Brazilian at price and specs.
never seen so much kicker elements "destroyed" haha, fun testing stuff to destruction anyhow, except paying for it
The plastic spider ring is a no go. That needs to be like needs be made from something harder
Awesome content 👏
Will use what ever i want if i buy that box
4:45
Was that "3 kinds of Bass" by Bass Outlaws?
Not his box anymore once it’s paid for, nothing wrong with threaded inserts or other types of inserts, if u want to follow Bobby advice on not useing them that’s cool, but just remember it is urs to do with as you plz
Thays crazy 11k and all it did was eat the spider awsome
Bad ass box! Maybe someday I can afford one of his boxes...
Could you please test some under seat all in one subwoofer systems?
Thanks for the suggestion
I get the overpowering But at rated or 1000 -watt over and the second one fell apart. What's power handling when the cones won't stay together. Bumping one of these with a thousand Watts over on The Daily they come apart. 😂
Those speakers are pretty impressive
I would like to see you do a dino on a stinger 2,000 watt amplifier
I'm late but have a question about the Gately enclosure........the port design doesn't allow for a loading wall ...what are the pros and cons of this?
When are you gonna test the atrend enclosure sir love hour UA-cam channel great work thanks
Would love to see what it does with the KXA2400 at 1ohm
Looks like maybe wait until the next revision for daily drivers
Why? Do you normally send like 10k over rated to your daily subs?
It's so cool that Steve Meade shot out your video by making a video of himself watching your video with his sick setup!
Yes, that was awesome!
Miss seeing the X18....
Vega in the house!!! My two favorite big dummies 😂
