    Another suberb analysis by Dr. Grande. I still am bingewatching the Doctor's entire "complete works" (I was pretty late to the show). My husband jokes that Dr. Grande will soon have me as the subject of one of his videos, to be titled "Russian Wife struck with Grande Compulsion Sydrome Forgets to do the Washing-Up." Well, I guess it sounds funnier in Russian. With best wishes and hopes for peace from Moscow.

    I had a CDL and worked for Werner Enterprises for about a year. If they could smell the brakes then the driver should have stopped right away. If the brakes get hot enough they will not work at all. I'm guessing that the brakes were being used excessively on a vehicle that was far over it's weight threshold. Chances are that the standard excursion brakes were still on the vehicle. If you add that much more weight to a vehicle you need to add bigger rotors and bigger calipers to adjust for the weight increase. It's possible that the brakes locked up in a clamp down state if the master cylinder was faulty. That would create a smell for sure. But I think that the brakes were just too small for all the weight that they were trying to stop. If the truck had been driven like that for several years or even months the brakes were definitely worn out. That would have led to them failing for sure. I'm not sure why someone with a CDL wouldn't know how brake systems work. It's pretty simple. Plus the smell would be a pretty good indicator that something was wrong. The owner of the vehicle should have fitted the right brakes on a vehicle that big carrying that many people. His disregard for it being judged out of service was criminal and results were deadly. He should have gotten 1 year in prison for every death that happened in that crash. 20 years sounds about right for this level of negligence. I hope that the civil cases leave him broke or chase him out of the country. Who needs professional paintball players anyway?

    If you read the NTSB report, they did extensive testing on an exemplar Excursion. They loaded it with the same weight and did partial system failures like front brake failure, rear brake failure, ABS failure, and power assist failure. In every scenario it was able to stop in well under twice the distance of an unloaded Excursion with the same failure.
    They also did brake dynamometer testing simulating the hill and various failures. Under all simulated conditions, the vehicle was able to stop at the bottom of the downgrade.
    This was not a "more people than the vehicle was designed for" issue. It was simply in disrepair. Crimped brake lines, leaking brake lines, seized caliper pistons, etc.

    Happened not too far from me, and a treacherous stretch of road. Driver would have built up speed without pressing gas pedal.
    The judge has refused the plea deal and this will still go to trial. State Supreme Court Justice Peter Lynch said the arrangement was fundamentally flawed. He gave limo company operator Nauman Hussain a choice between withdrawing his guilty plea and accepting a 15- to 48-month prison sentence, the maximum possible term for his role in the 2018 crash. That is from a local paper, The Daily Gazette.

    I had not heard of this awful tragedy… My heart sincerely goes out to all of the victims and to all of their families..
    I am a retired commercial truck driver, heavy equipment hauler, & instructor… Omgosh this is absolutely unfathomable..
    I 100% agree with your take on the necessities to regard CDL license holders just as strict as DOT laws are for truck drivers… CDL license holders who drive stretch limousines, bobtails, even some uhaul self moving trucks, should all be geared towards the same strictness as truck drivers…
    Im in a particular state where DOT laws are one of the most strictest… Our weigh stations will place the rig out of service and the driver cannot move, or they will be arrested…
    I agree this is a multi-failure of the system.. It is not just one bad failure, but a multitude of critical failures that resulted in such a horrific and devastating loss of these people.. 💔
    What can be said about this owner being a free man, and having no conscience as to the deaths he clearly caused is deplorable…
    This was really so hard to hear, but Tysvm Dr. Grande for getting this story out… I would sincerely hope that new laws would be put in place to prevent such a heart wrenching event to ever take place again… 🕊🤍🕊

      I view it as any number of fail-safes could have worked to save lives. The driver knew the vehicle wasn't safe too.. The ABS slight stayed on? That is not normal, and any driver with that many souls onboard would refuse to drive it; instead it seems like he drove it like he stole it.

    You were VERY correct, that the limo went OUT OF ITS WAY to get to the intersection, where the Apple Barrel store is located. However, I am disappointed that you failed to mention the fact that locals are FULLY AWARE of how deadly that intersection is... tractor trailers had actually been banned from taking that route for many years before the limo crash even took place. The combination of 1) the steepness of the hill, 2) the weight of the tractor trailer's cargo, and 3) the T-shapped intersection, requiring a stop... had been NOTORIOUS for the brake failure in perfectly healthy tractor trailers. This was a known fact, a VERY IMPORTANT fact which is worth mentioning.... because, the fact of the matter is.... this limo company took a vehicle that they knew 1) had an already KNOWN failed brake system, 2) had an excess amount of weight, 3) OUT OF THE WAY to this NOTORIOUSLY DEADLY intersection....
    The combination of these facts speaks VOLUMES about intent, in my eyes, that this crash was a PLANNED EVENT. These facts will no doubt come out in court.
    So yes, in your next video please don't leave this important fact out. You can look it up yourself, it's a FACT tractor trailers had been banned from that route for MANY YEARS leading up to this crash. And I am SURE that the driver was fully aware of this.
    Regardless of anything, I can guarantee you that the party DID NOT "change their destination" to the Apple Barrel store.... that would make 0 sense.

    • @donnarivenburg5371
      @donnarivenburg5371 16 днів тому

    My brother's good friend and his wife were two of the victims of this terrible accident. They left behind a young son (their first and only child) who will never remember them. I have always wondered what really happened because there was such speculation, including murder-suicide, drug causes, assassination, nefarious tampering of the vehicle, etc. Thank you for clearing all of this up. Between the brakes failing and the weight of the vehicle, what happened perfectly makes sense. It came down to the first law of motion: a body in motion at a constant velocity will remain in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force.

    I'd like to bring up the possibility that if diesel powered the vehicles engine "ran away". High mileage poorly maintained diesels can start to consume their own engine oil and can be very difficult to control. They will run at a RPM well above the governed redline, screaming or howling. A witness stated the vehicle's engine was loud, almost sounding like a jet.

It makes me sick to my stomach to think so many individuals could have done the right thing (actually do the brake-work, confiscate the driver's license, not use the unsafe vehicle, etc) and protected 20 lives. In my opinion, they are all guilty, all the way back to the first failure to act.

    The intersection where this vehicle was supposed to stop but couldn’t is ripe for this kind of accident. I’ve been to that restaurant at the scene many times. The road the limo was traveling on is sloped downward toward the intersection. If someone was coasting down the hill and expecting to brake at the stop sign, a brake failure would be devastating, as we saw. It's hard to explain, but the hazard is not apparent immediately. Even though I am familiar with the road, I worry about having difficulty braking in my work van if I am going just a bit too fast at the top. The driver of the limo did not know the road, clearly, and given the extreme weight of the vehicle and its inadequate brakes, it's not a surprise at all that he lost control. When I drive that road I routinely look for spots along that stretch where he could have potentially ditched the vehicle to try and stop it, but there really aren't many good options. The stop sign at the bottom of the hill comes quick, even at 45 mph.

      Sean Wilson thanks for sharing that tidbit. I didn't know. Years ago when I lived in Ky. I was flying down the highway and I heard this knocking noise. So I pulled into a full service gas station. The mechanic there said it was my motor and do NOT drive the car have it towed. But I called my mechanic who recently just worked on my car and he told me that the "gas station" mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about it could NOT be the motor if it was he would of known when he worked on my car. He told me to drive back. I did. And where I lived? Thank God it was a small one light own because my breaks went out. I could not stop the car. And I freaked out. I threw the car in par by using my emergency parking break . And got a slam. I didn't know what else to do and I was so scared. Thank God for that little town where the speed limit was only 35. I can't imagine having to slam my car in park to get it to stop if I had be going 65mph. Thank you. I don't tend on this ever happening again but if it ever does I will remember this don't slam on the parking break put the car in neutral, You may have just saved someone's life with your comment. Not everyone knows to do this. Thank you so very much.

    • @theSemiChrist
      @theSemiChrist 2 роки тому +2

      @@thekurtcobainfoundation4200 I'm glad if I even help one person with that comment. The engine will probably continue to rev, it won't be moving the transmission, but if it's still red lining the engine you'll want to move away from the vehicle, too.
      This is a good idea if the brakes fail too as you'll lose momentum. Throw the ebrake as you get closer to stopping if you need to or as soon as you can if you need to stop more immediately. It won't show you down as quick as you like but it'll be slower than just ramming into something at full speed.
      That had to be scary though. My friend's wheel flew off while he was driving and he was able to downshift to stop without sliding out of control because he was in a standard.

    A couple of things that stood out to me. One of the passengers had text a friend and said that their limo was a piece of junk and that it was making a really loud noise that was getting louder the farther they drove. Another thing is that the rout that they were on was a two lane road that had a lot of hills and curves. The driver was not familiar with the area so I assume he didn’t know that they should have been on a four lane highway that was a direct and safe route. That’s why when they started down that hill when they reached the bottom the car was traveling north of 100 Mph on impact. I believe the limo actually had an Out Of Service sticker on it due to the breaking issues .

This death car incident was a disaster in more ways than one.

      Look up famous fires. At the Station and Cocoanut Grove, none of the responsible parties did more than 2 years.
      The Station was greatly overpriced and allowed fireworks indoors at a low ceilinged wood building full of flammable materials and bad exits.
      Cocoanut Grove, illegal buildings, greatly overcrowded (see a pattern yet?) , flammable decor, and inward opening doors. Plus faulty fire doors. Which, had the worked, might very well have killed a LOT more. Might not matter, as the doors were to the room where the outside doors opened in.
      That killed 475, btw. The Station killed 100. Barney Wolanski did just about 2 years for locking and blocking doors.
      Luckily, (if you must be in the 2nd deadliest fire in US history), it was so toxic, one breath would kill you right where you were sitting. People were asked to leave after the fire, and their corpses were sitting upright at the bar.
