In the original Blaster Master video game, Jason's pet frog Fred grows to an enormous size after touching a radioactive chest and falls into a hole in the ground. Jason chases Fred down the hole, and they end up in a large cavern. Jason is forced to kill Fred twice during his journey, but Fred escapes the underworld unscathed along with Jason. Fred is not seen or mentioned in any subsequent Blaster Master adventures until the Blaster Master Zero series, where he is revamped and serves as the boss of Area 4. In Blaster Master Zero, Jason is a robotics scientist who captures a strange creature he believes is from before the ice age and names it Fred. Fred escapes from the terrarium and disappears through a wormhole, which leads Jason to a cave far underground.

It was a really great game. Big undertaking since it’s 90+ minutes w no saves but it’s high quality throughout. Glad I got this one knocked off my list.
I never played Blaster Master as a kid and never heard of it. It looks fun. I like the fact you can drive a tank and get out of it. The tank portions looks really cool. Is Blaster Master the best game on the NES? Maybe the best underrated game.
@@ashwinrebbapragada7626 I think it’s very well thought of by those who have played it. It really functions as 2 games in one. Maybe the best slate of bosses I’ve seen so far also. It could be considered overlooked I suppose
I’ve never finished this, I usually tap out around level 6 or 7. I’m going to go for it this weekend after watching this.
I can certainly see how they are works, but they'll always be loaves of bread to me. Glad you did this game 👍🏻✨
@@aceofdatabase hahahaha fair point. But gray and pink leaping bread??? Lol
@@retronate I deleted the first comment because I didn't get worm to come out then I didn't again. Roargh. Yes, pink and grey blaster baguettes. I guess 😂
@ I was picking up what you were putting down lol
Now that I see more bread I think I was just barking down the wrong alley all along. They're clearly worms.
@ all you’ve done here is make me want bread. Which isn’t a tough thing to persuade me to desire…
Jason's upgrades always reminded me of Fester's Quest
@@Cypherlode had a few folks say the same. I need to give that one a go.
RetroNate out of context: "I took a crazy lobster to the face!"
@@kinglysandus no you got it in full context. Lol
I was terrible at this game as a kid. I definitely did not have enough patience and would always die, usually being Jason. I don’t think my mom rented it enough for me to get very far either. It was this one and Metalstorm that infuriated me to no end. 😂
I grew up with Sega and PS1. Though I did have Blaster Master: Blasting Again for the PS1.
I keep intending to dig into the Sega titles but I keep running across these NES ones I gotta finish. Hope to get there soon enough.
Hard game hard.
@@FIoydFan yeah man. This was a process to learn all of the map and boss strats to get through. But a really great game makes it easier to stomach
Awesome review, do love the remake too😎🎮🎧
@@Gambit2149 I’ve still gotta play the remake. Thanks!
Ok blaster master I remember and I never beat it as a kid awesome vid
Crazy tough for a kid to beat this one…especially without the internet? At least the manual got you started but it was a big undertaking
Another excellent "2 games in 1 with excellent music" is The Guardian Legend. I think I told you about it before on one of your other videos, but not sure. I hope you can get around to it at some point!
@@wolfenjosh it’s come up a few times from commenters. I remember trying it and thinking it reminded me of this game a bit. I will have to revisit it soon
The Cutting Room Floor website shows a powerup we never get to use called SPIKE (implying immunity from spike damage) and the sudden room transition from the game cover boss to the Plutonium Boss suggests we were supposed to go find him (I'm guessing in a cave surrounded by spikes). Makes me wonder what the game was supposed to have been before either time or memory ran out on the developing team?
Would've been nice if we could turn off WALL1 and WALL2 though because, yeah...I was having some serious Area 8 flashbacks watching you play and all because of unwanted WALL2 use
@@Vistico93 that might’ve been the biggest adjustment. Wall 1 isn’t terrible but Wall 2 is brutal to get used to, especially in an area that’s littered with those platforms. I almost lost it right at the beginning of Area 8 because of it
and the bolts are called 'thunder break' - odd name as they don't actually function as a break. I also rarely use them because they are inconsistent and don't strike the same area beneath you.
@@xenxander I found the same! Sort of random the path they take? Useful in a couple of spots but mostly living with missiles and homing
@@retronate yeah you have to spam a few rapidly because their path is random between a range beneath you.
Makes me wonder how a game like this would be accepted today if it just came out.
@@ThatDamnedGamer1 it felt like it held up to me. Then again I’m perpetually stuck in the 80s lol

@@steveafanador6441 thanks! This was a big undertaking. Not an easy game but well worth it.
Great game, Great music
@@perrydrayton8071 agreed on both counts. Like areas 6 and 7 music the most.
i beat this, bionic commando was fire too! and megaman 1&2
@@NoahJonesNews if you go back I’ve got a video for each of those games you mentioned! Bionic commando is amazing. And I adore the megaman series but actually like 3 the most at this point. Still have to play 4, 5, and 6
@ I played it when it was released and the music in my opinion and the feeling I got when I purchased mega man 2 as a kid will stay with me forever!
@ oh yeah. Big vibes with that game.
I always thought the frog itself somehow mutated into the tank. And what exactly is the kid's motivation to eradicate all that underground life? Doesn't he have school?
@@TokyoXtreme there’s are wildly valid questions. Where are his parents? Why is he suddenly the hero we didn’t know we needed? No selection process? Just “hey I found a tank so I’ll blow everything up!”
The end screen shows the frog separate from the tank, disproving your theory. But it’s totally plausible to believe you’re driving a mutated frog tank up until that screen
I always enjoy new old school playthrough videos . And I like that this guy dies sometimes because that's what we all did. Perfect playthroughs are kinda boring
@@neilmello2007 this guy indeed does die sometimes…but not in this one baby! lol you’re right though…gotta keep it real for these.
Played thrpugh this game so many times. First time playing through it can take hrs just figuring out where to go and hope your NES doesn't start to glitch out halfway through the game otherwise you just wasted a lot of time.
@@boosk2127 might be the longest game I’ve played that doesn’t offer a password or save file.

Haha i made it to area 8 as a kid with no maps or anything lots and lots of trail and error excellent game
@ the worst part there is losing your homing if you continue. Idk how to get through without it. I suppose going into the little tunnels to search for it as Jason?

@@CobaltContrast it does have some right? Blaster Master Zero is one that I’ve heard some good reviews on
@retronate the play station one? I'd like to see Steam or something do a pixel art remaster to keep the Side scrolling alive. The switch is keeping games like this hot. I'm surprised there aren't more of these.
@ not sure…just heard the title lol.
Alas, that is your frog.
@@solinari4101 how then does the ending screen show you with your frog next to the tank? Is there some lore there I’m unaware of?
@retronate I could've sworn it was. I believe it was in the book I mentioned. It was so long ago, though, I may be mistaken
