    I totally agree with your statement about killing your orchid with watering. I killed my Oncidium Sherry Baby sweet fragrance. Water got into the new growths causing them to rot. Now that is the latest lesson I learned in growing this orchid.

    Thank you for this video! I got into orchids during quarantine, and your videos have made it possible for me to care for them as well as a newbie can :) But six months ago I moved to a place that is much less warm and humid, and much more windy. My orchids have not been as happy, and now with summer temperatures I'm getting leaves falling off, new leaves being much smaller than the ones before them, and/or not unfolding. I have inadvertently been neglecting them I think, not noticing that the change in climate has been impacting them. I've lost one, hopefully will save the rest! Thank you again for sharing your wisdom and expertise so generously :)

    One of my phalaenopsis orchids had water left sitting in there for about a week. It was in the inner part (crown) of The outer leaves. That leaf fell off and there seems to be a hole now in the side. I sprayed hydrogen peroxide on it and it fizzed up. It still has two other leaves which look good but barley any roots. Should I expect it to survive? 😢❤

    My only orchid is a mini-phal that is 3 years old and has never bloomed after it lost its first flowers. I repotted it when it outgrew its original mini-pot and used a new repotme plastic pot and repotme orchid mix. She grew many large strong leaves (about 12) and lots of roots, air and in the pot. A few months ago, she started shedding leaves from the base of the plant. A vibrant green leaf turns pale green, then brown, and then drops off. It happens in a week. She’s lost 6 leaves so far. Do you have any suggestions to keep this orchid alive?

    • @deweinbender5652
      @deweinbender5652 2 роки тому

      I have 1 of my mini's that is dropping bottom leaves just as fast as it can grown them. At least 6 NEW and lost 6 just this spring/summer. I found my issue was a combination of transplant shock from all moss to repotme mix with some moss and I actually lost a fair amount of roots due to the shock. Now I am aware of how to lessen the effects of the shock and aid in the transition to different a mix. But I'm going to put it back in full moss with bark on top. My other minis are thriving in the moss with only bark on top so maybe that's part of what troubles your mini? But the mini's can grow perfectly in the repotme mix once they adjust which can sometimes feel like an eternity. Hope this helped a little or maybe gave u a idea to try. Good luck!

    Hello beautiful! I love your videos and the way that you explain everything! My husband got me a phalaenopsis in may, when I repotted it in a medium recommended by repotme it started losing leaves and I’m afraid that it will die if I don’t do anything. So, I am desperate for your expert advice please!? Thank!

    • @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne
      @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne 2 роки тому +1

      Hi Veronica. I know your question weren’t for me but thought I’d share my experience. It’s not uncommon at all for Phals to lose a leaf or two while acclimating to a new environment which can take up to 6 months, particularly if they are the oldest ones at the bottom. I’ve had Phals which lost 3, and all came good in the end. Not sure what medium it came in but im guessing it wasn’t as good as the RePotMe stuff. So all that acclimating - the travel, your home and environment, the new medium, it’s a lot for a new orchid to take on at once. I tend to cut the flower spikes when I repot new Phals because of all this stress. Let them focus on what’s really important which is acclimating, roots and leaves. In a few months time, I typically have to check the roots because a lot will have died off. You may want to do that given it’s now August. Clean it up, put it back and just let it be to do its thing. With good care, she will bounce back. Hope that helps 🌿🌿

    • @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne
      @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne 2 роки тому +1

      @@veronicacoto4068 you’re welcome and I should have also said, don’t be too shocked if most of the roots have died or are dying. I expect this is exactly what you will see. Your phal will shed leaves because the root system she has now, cannot support all those leaf structures. Again, she will come good, all other things being as they should be. Lastly, once you cut away the dead roots, you can put her back in the current medium she is in now, as it’s only a few months old. It won’t have broken down yet 🌿🌿

    youd be horrified if you saw what i did, in an award winning nursery the guy was using a full on hose pipe the drench the orchids from above and then putting them back in decorative pots saying they need to be watered like this every week and they pot them in all bark which had moss and algues growing on them, most of their orchids didnt look well or were black all of the babies were black, I was very shocked at how they treat their orchids, for being a orchid nurseries and also and award wining one too. they had a dracula vampira there as well, they had examples of different medium in an info way, but they potted bark. I bought two orchid at 10 each, one was very moss y and green suprising most of the roots in tact few papery and or squishy ones, I repotted and soaked in rain water from bottom now both of the orchids are thriving they have flowers spikes, I'm so excited to see what flowers come. the foilage is a gorgeous purply red on both.

    That's great. Thank you so much for all the excellent information. I am a new plant parent and was successful at avoiding orchids (since I'm afraid will kill them) until I found two, which were on the rescue shelf in Ikea. They looked pretty healthy, no pests (at least to the naked eye), just underwatered. Couldn't resist and took them home. Started to mist them religiously every day in the morning. In the meantime I bought a Dendrobium, which I started to mist as well. I stopped now, since I know better thanks to your videos (which I'm binge-watching), but I am really afraid they will die. How long after the misting are the crown rot signs suppose to appear?

    • @SANDRA-ni3wi
      @SANDRA-ni3wi 2 роки тому +1

      Don’t worry crown rot manifests pretty quickly, it can even happen over night. If it is a Phaelenopsis, which I suspect, it can handle low humidity. In summer on a hot day, on my West facing window, mine can reach as low as 30%. They don’t mind, as long as you raise the frequency of watering, depending on the size of the pot or the substrate, they can dry out in a matter of days.

    Hey maybe someone can help me, I bought a beautiful white orchid flower and I watched the video on orchid pots and got a plastic one with holes and a large one to fit the other one in, with about an inch of space all the way around. I repotted with an orchid pitting mix as well and watered about once a week as directed. Well it took about 2 weeks and all the flowers started falling off. Now it has no flowers and the stem is brown but the roots are green and the leaves are still a rich green and very healthy. What happened to my orchid? Can I bring it back? Thanks. Love your channel.

    Could you share tips on how to take care of pest issues with catasetums? I got a new catasetum with two lovely new pseudobulbs today - but sadly I found that it has some creepy crawlies in them. They look like small green little bugs, so I'm thinking fungus gnats. Since the new pseudobulbs are growing (lovely leaves!) but both bulbs are much smaller than the old pseudobulb I'm getting concerned they won't do well. I saw in your video from 5-6 months ago on catasetums that using the mineral oil solution may not work on catasetum leaves. What do you use?

    Hi Danni, what should i do if 2 out of 17 of my phalanopsis orchids have started new spikes again after they have all been out of flowering stage since first week of July and all have been producing leaves and roots including the 2 that spiked? They have all been kept in the same conditions, temp/humidity/H2O/light/Fertilizer etc. I have not dropped the temp to enduce spikes so I'm so confused at why these 2 are newly spiking?? I dont want them to use up all their energy for next year. Should I leave them or cut them? If i cut them I don't know if there will be room or enough leaf room for spikes next year. Please help??

      I believe it needs the drop in temperature to entice the flower spikes but I would wait til the normal season to come back around as i believe now is the season for your orchid to grow roots and leaves right now. Danni has a very informative and extremely helpful video dedicated to enducing the orchid to produce flower spikes and bloom. it might be recovering, but 5 years is indeed a lot of time to recover with no result. i had one in similar situation for 2 years then i placed it in my cellar for 1 or 2 weeks (during summer it has a constant 18 Celsius and its pretty dark, but not quite pitch dark) and after that it bloomed shortly. i left it alone for a few months after that flower spike has gone away and after about 6 months it grew another spike all on her own.

      if it's a cool growing type (most grocery store phals are this type), it needs a cool period to trigger blooms but also check out the light levels. I try to make sure the leaves are a light to medium green, if the leaves are a really dark green (like an unripe avocado) then it's probably not enough light.
