Live Aid - Rockin' All Over The World (4/6)

- Documentary telling the story of the day that music rocked the world. Bob Geldof recalls how, after 12 weeks of manic preparation, the big day finally arrived. But would it work, would the punters watch, and more importantly would they part with their cash?
Bob Geldof and his team recall their fear of how the whole thing might fall apart at any minute. Stars from the day itself - Elton John, Queen, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, U2 and a whole host of others - remember walking out to face a crowd of 72,000 and a global audience of billions. And those who watched it at home, including Tony Blair, JK Rowling and Helen Fielding, recall how they didn't miss a minute of this extraordinary event.
Director: Janice Sutherland
Producer: Kate Werran
I think Queen's performance was not just the best performance of the day but still to this day the best performance I've EVER seen in pop and rock.
先日、梅田のヨドバシカメラのテレビ売場で「ボヘミアンラプソディ」のライブエイドのシーンがヘビロテしてた( ・∇・)ヽ(・∀・)ノ。
You surely haven't seen their Wembley concert yet
@@toastbrot9012 it was.
Freddie was such a free spirit.
Queen stole the concert! they were the best and they continue their carrer
Queen. That is all.
I really only wanted to watch this because of Queen... I love you Freddie...
God, I love Queen. And Freddie just showed that you DON'T have to jumped off the stage to get close to your audience..!!! :)))
I love all these comments about how Queen at Live Aid was, is & always be the best live performance in history!
Dave Grohl was right, Queen was the only act you ended up remembering after Live Aid. They took everyone.
Agreed till today
U2 actually got a big boost from their appearance on the show. Bono's spontaneous dancing with the random person in the crowd was also a highlight of the show.
U2
Queen at live aid - a unique phenomenon
The thing about Queen was that playing stadiums is something they had grown accustomed to. A lot of the bands here did not do nearly as many shows like that as Queen. Not only that but Queen actually practiced a set so they could get a bunch of songs played. Some of the other bands barely got 2 songs done while Queen did parts of some and mixed them to get around 6 or 7 out
That was called preparation on Queen's part and it paid off. The truth is, though, the Wembley bill was pretty awful for bands. There were only about three good live bands that played: Queen, The Who, U2 and possibly Dire Straits. The rest of the bill was made up of cheesy '80s pop stars and has beens who hadn't played for literally years.
Matt Maloney
Madonna has been played a LOT since '85, lol. "Like a Prayer", "Vogue" '91, "Ray of Light" '98, "Music" 2000, "Hung Up" 2009, the SUPER BOWL in 2012. She's, (sadly) proven her point: Women aren't treated as equally as their male counterparts.
And thats called being smart. Twice as good as everyone else
Among the band presented, Queen's part was more like a short documentary.
I know right
I loved it
Seriously, I get so many chills when it comes to the Queen part of the documentary.
Queen had the advantage of playing stadiums and arenas, and the great Freddie Mercury having mastered how to command and own the crowd, so no surprise they stole the entire show.
Her majesty Queen!!!!
I like U2, but Bono jumping off the stage was weak. Queen ruled that day!
Feel so privileged to be on this planet at the same time and feel a little bit sorry for kids that missed it. Will never be another Freddie.
The two police women are funny. Great anecdotes. Lovely!
Queen made this show
wow. Had no idea the rest of U2 was pissed off at Bono for leaving the stage and that they didn't even know where he was.
I was an U2 fan for a while but Bono bugs me and I am not sure why
Bono is a pretentious prick
holy ethiopia! growing up DREAMING to be able to watch the even LIVE, which is impossible back then in my country. then almost 3 decades later having finally watched it on dvd and now...THIS!! the stories BEHIND the epic event. WOW!! Geldoff's an amazing figure..he defies everyting and everyone. Queen and that performance...just an awesome time in music, which i doubt could EVER be repeated again.
I think we're going to have to get the address first? Why?
Queen was and is the best band alive no one has talent as them I’m from America and when they came on I was glued to my tv I was wishing I could of been there RIP FREDDY YOU ARE SO MISSED LOVE QUEEN BROVO 💜💜👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Best part..
Brian may:" ....in that situation we have no contro u knowl... there's infinite space underneath your feet..if you fall..u know it would be a pauling if you screw up..and Freddie's like what the hell! AAAAAOOOOOOO!!!"😅😅
“Her Majesty QUEEN!!!!!”
And the part with Queens performance has most vievs of all.... that means something.
This is the part you came in for. Queen !!!
Without Bob there wouldn’t be Live Aid, without Queen there wouldn’t be Live Aid.
Midge Ure was also a big part of producing it, tho. Queen was a last-minute addition, as they were having internal issues to deal with at the time the concert was being put together. Had they declined to appear, the show would have still gone on - albeit with one less act.
@TriggerHapyFellow I do too! With the shots from the stage and the energy, you feel so much a part of it, even 26 years later. Queen literally owned the world for those 20 minutes...must have been an incredible feeling for them!
Queen The Best Band Ever.
Mr. Mercury The Best singer and frontman ever!
These guys are really missed!
RIP Freddie. A little bit of me is glad you're not around now to see the manufactured shit that inhabits the charts that you're genuis once owned. RIP. Your like will quite literally never be seen again.
Elton and Freddie were great friends too. In fact, Elton was just about the only other star that was invited to his funeral. Bowie sent some flowers.
Queen Radio Gaga is THE moment that defines Live Aid
Queen. WAS. Live Aid 🖤
Queen at Live Aid is the greatest ever live performance in the history of music!
lol Love those two police women!
the Queen started the party!!
Queen stole the show!
I see at the start of this segment of the video 5;18 (used a semicolon so as not to time stamp)... I know we are nearing to that fucking God of music.. This documentary is absolutely amazing. Freddie is on soon. If I was at that gig (I was only 5, but was a huge Freddie fan) I'd never suffer depression in my life. To be in the same place as some of the most amazing artists ever is just unbelievable. Best day in history 13.7.85
Anabele Giles! Why didn't you own a Queen album anyway!!!!
QUEEN!!!!! xx SF
Queen.. 👑 They were the Best !!! But yet they were nervous.... ❤
I was on the planet but too young to remember seeing it at the time.
I'm aware that I'm replying to an 8 yo comment, but yeah it was the same way for me...My mom tells me that I watched Live Aid from my high chair!
The fact that he is less popular than Queen doesn't make him less right
Ian Astbury is so cool sitting on the couch just smoking.
I was 13 in 1985, i wish i haf been there. @ the mother of all concerts. I really wish though, that Springsteen had graced the stage @ wembley, he was made for that stage.
Dave Shields He did the week before, in fact he donated his stage so that they didn't have to wait 3 days for his to come down and then buy their own and then spend 3 days putting it up.
How can that be ? You see in the documentary that they built a revolving stage, it is true to say that he performed at Wembley in July 85'
The turn table was built on top of the stage, postioned in the centre so they could be setting up the heavy equipment for one band, taking away the euipment for another while another band was playing. But as you can see from the video the platform was raised as you can see the ropes. The stage was already left up, they placed the platform on top of that.
I'd just turned 14. Couldn't get tickets due to being not well off (in this countries standards) I know she sent a checque but she never said how much.
She saw her beloved Queen on TV!
QUEEN with Live Aid.....
Elton John was actually high on drugs and an alcoholic for most of the '80s. He nearly died. It's pretty incredible he was able to perform at this show at all.
“Bob said don’t be smart, just cram in your best hits, not your latest single you want to plug. That’s what we did. We really tightened it down and made sure the equipment was good and just treated it like any other gig.” Brian May
“Oh my god darling. I’d have shit myself if I thought I was playing to the biggest crowd in history.” Laughs. Freddie Mercury
To be fair, David Bowie, The Who, Elton John and Paul McCartney all went on after...
They are AMAZING and I’m not saying that queen is better, but that day their performance was
@abrokenplate As someone who actually watched Live Aid as it happened I can tell you that Queen WHERE the whole show!
It must have sucked for ALL the bands who went on after Queen he he
Did this ever came out in DVD? if so where can i find it / buy it? great documentary I was 14 years old when this happened and id not see the whole thing... now I can with extras!
Queen.
Levels.
Does anyone have any video clips of the "90000 Philadelphian's clapping on cue".
Live Aid was before my years so I don't know an awful lot about it, and am seeing it out of the context of the time...watching this documentary I actually find most of it really irritating. For a big fundraising event, all I am seeing are people whinging, posturing, acting totally self important, complaining about who went on in what order and who said what to who, etc.
BUT...the bit where Queen performs actually made me choke up, just from the sheer awesomeness. Man, I wish I was there.
I just realised what's missing! No dickheads on their mobiles taling feckin photos all the time... yep them were the days!!!
"the one time john deacon had cool hair"
I take it you're joking.
When Queen walked off David Bowie called them bastards ..how was he supposed to top there performance
8:52 they thought Queen didn't matter anymore...really?? I wonder how they react after their great performance
i like the edge he is super cool
Queen followed instructions and won the event - when there was no contest, except for the after-event evaluations, even to this day..
Man, Bono sure does drop alot of mics.
Bono was is such a pre madonna
He still is. He is WAY over rated. Freddie Mercury has/had more talent in his little finger. Queen was simply the best. Freddies voice and the arrangements and songs they sang are timeless. Bono is a freak.
Yes, he did hit the scene before Madonna did. 😛
"This video is so wrong. after Freddie does his playing with the crowd bit, the next song they sang was hammer to fall, not we will rock you."
They didn't show the performances of Bo' Rhap, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Hammer to Fall and We are the Champions in the doc. I guess they couldn't show it all!!!
Dan Bridge I said that 3 months ago.
Matt Maloney That's because it's Live Aid documentary, not Queen doc.
Teves Kyu I know it's a Live Aid documentary, it says it in the title. I was just responding to someone else's comment and making the observation that they couldn't show all of the songs.
They were aDORable !
Bono is such a helmet.
9:20 "Pull it off??!!!" Actually live aid is known for Queen
I don't think it was half. I think you're meaning the beginning of Radio Gaga. Synths and sequencers weren't banned at Live Aid, other artists were using them. Every artist cheats to some extent - where would U2 have been without the echo pedal?
Geldolf should have told Ian Astubury to go on stage and sing “She sells Sanctuary” with Duffy pounding on the guitar...”Come on raise some fu**king money Wembley!”
You may think Dire Straits were crap. However, Mark Knopfler is widely acknowledged as one of the world's finest fingerstyle guitar players. He IS a talented musician, and a far better guitarist than, say, the Edge from U2, who just plays one riff and is lost without his echo pedal!
Being good on guitar does not mean the live performance was good lol
Dire Straits is a well-known band. Even if some folks dismiss their playing at Live Aid, they still have many fans. I disagree that Mark is a better guitarist than the Edge, but I guess to each his own.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zs Technically, there's no question Mark Knopfler is a better guitarist than the Edge. The Edge is all effects. The comedian and musician Bill Bailey once did a routine about The Edge and his effects. Well worth checking out.
@@MALONEYCAMFIELD I may do so in the future. But it's not clear what you mean by 'effects'. That's more common in movie and TV production (i.e. 'special effects') than in 'music' per se. If you listen to U2's recordings, they dont rely heavily on 'trickery' - they always let the basic core of their sound come through. The closest thing to a 'trick' recording they did was on the "Unforgettable Fire" album. A track on it is a song of theirs (minus vocals) run backwards and slowed down, with Bono improvising lyrics over it.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zs "it's not clear what you mean by 'effects'. That's more common in movie and TV production (i.e. 'special effects') than in 'music' per se" This is what I'm talking about en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_unit By the way, I've found the Bill Bailey video clip ua-cam.com/video/H8dZwXnMrRU/v-deo.html
Hall & Oates were a fucking nothing band back then. Who did he think he was, ragging on Queen like that?!?
I am not a big H&O fan, but I dont see your point. They were a hit act, and the fact that they were on the bill in the first place says a lot.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zs I can't remember writing that comment. Oof, I think I was just making fun of him for complaining about Queen and Sun City haha. Hall & Oates had a few great bangers for sure.
"Fess up, who went to the Straits concert that night?"
Wasn't Brothers in Arms the biggest selling British album of the '80s?
It certainly was.
That was some bs: "Well, they wanted to be at Live Aid, but they'd already bought tickets to see us, so they were screwed." OR, you coulda cancelled, payed the vendors, and been more charitable to AFRICA. No wonder they fell off the charts. Wankers.
Alysia Mer David-Wasser .. fell off the charts ? 😂😂😂 .. they released the biggest selling album of the 80s just after live aid .. twat !
be angry at Bono for grandstanding
Where's part 5?
Status quo ❤❤❤
Freddie Mercury es fantástico
Fess up, who went to the Straits concert that night?
the funny thing is hall and oates no one knows where they are today and queen is still very popular so who is the real jerk.
Lol. Those 2 lady police officers are a riot!
2 lady coppers are just the best :D
So more octaves in your range makes you a better singer?
wow looking back at Bono...he ripped so much off Van Morrison.
that's bo-noh!
Iris and Beryl.....rock groupies
I think I live next door to the two constables.
8:52 introduction of queen up to their performance but only showing radio gaga
Bono has always been a showy hypocrite and he flat-out admitted he was looking for a symbol for the day which was the only reason he went to that woman's rescue gallantly! I'm glad but U2 has been able to raise money and awareness for many different causes but let's be real Bono! Now, as far as the rest of the concert... It was remarkable and yes Queen was transcendental.
How is bono a 'hypocrite'? Dancing with a random person in the crowd is simply part of the performance - she was probably thrilled to do it, and still remembers it to this day. I saw U2 live c. 2012, and had a great time.
Where's Part 5 ??!!??
I guess someone thought the global event shouldn't be global after all :(
I found a full video of it! Look on youtube . You'll see part '2 of 2 there too. Enjoy!

Live Aid Against All Odds Documentary (Part 1 of 2)
@MrQueenfan4ever Also, that coming from a nation who seemed to almost completely forget the ethnic minorities in their own country during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. But bloody hell, imagine if there was a band today that had that much stage presence and physical and emotional power....
So Bono has always been annoying then. What a nightmare he is.
They weren't popular enough to be on the bill.
Bono is so effin full of himself. He saw an opportunity for a gimmick and he took it.
Crazy awesome shot of Geldof crossing over the heads of 72000 people at Wembley 7.28
Some American TV station may have that footage. It's interesting that despite their performance at Live Aid, it didn't save their career in America. Kind of Magic pretty much flopped over there and they didn't even think it was worth including the US on their Magic tour.
Matt Maloney
i watched the whole thing, from Kansas. You've stated you didn't see it, so you can't know what it felt like to watch Bowie sing "TVC15" from "Station to Station" or "Heroes". Or the tech glitches that were run of the mill bc cable tv was BRAND NEW. Wow! Go pray to your gods, DIRE STRAITS, while i google them to see if they're still a band.
the one time john deacon had cool hair
Must have sucked to be a member of the band that had to go on after Queen.
Iris and Beryl, special constables to Live Aid yet didn't know who the fuck anybody was. Can you imagine that today? It would be MI5 and they'd know your blood type, what you had for breakfast and and last time you had your finger up your nose.
"Freddie Mercury has a 3 octave vocal range. Roy Orbison has a 4 octave vocal range. Roy Orbison is a better singer."
Freddie Mercury had 4 octaves. Look at Wikipedia.
Roy Orbison had a great voice but he only really sang ballads. He couldn't have sung in a hard rock/metal band, which is what Queen were at the beginning of their career.
Freddie was a master at his art. That was to share his love of music. This showed in the last few days of his life. Mother love... bloody hell! I know he never managed to finish it but by god that is a chilling song.
He wasone of a Kind, as was David Bowie.
Bono do u right your own music. :;
i thought it would be zepplin...
or stones
could be hypothermia
