She said "the actual chances of being killed are quite low" and then said 14%. I would NOT say 14% is "quite low" when talking about CHANCE OF DEATH.

    • @Mjl449

What she means is, 14% of those who get attacked by a grizzly, die. So, even if you get attacked by one, you will likely live (not that I’d take my chances!). She just worded it really poorly.

Gotta go be careful when you let your dog off a leash in areas of bear country. Often bears will follow dogs to the campsite and dogs can be either aggressive towards bears or act as a prey by running away (either playfully or not) thus triggering the bear into an attack mode. Not saying that this is what happened in this case but its something to think about.

Im sure it was a horrible death , i feel for the bear as well, its a wild animal living in its natural habitat acting on instinct. Read an article where it was stated that the couple knew bear and safety protocols and followed them to a T ,even deployed a whole can of bear spray, however bears follows no such protocols..Grizzly bears are apex predators who are known for eating their prey while it's still alive. They can be extremely territorial , specially if they are guarding their prey, stumbling upon a sow and her cubs can be deadly ,or you can have animal that is sick and /or injured who can't fend for itself like a healthy animal can. While bear attacks and fatalities are rare, me personally I don't venture anywhere near bear territory.

Once human beings leave their well manicured cities and local parks and venture into the wild that's the animals home and humans despite how awesome we think that we are once we enter their playground we go back into the natural food chain along with our pets, play stupid games win stupid prizes but I'm also not heartless because my heart does go out to their friends and family.
