Terrible tragedy. My deepest condolences to the entire family. It seemed that they were exceedingly experienced, well prepared, and careful. My heart goes out to the couple's family, and their brave Border Collie, too. This makes me nervous about going backcountry backpacking, given the entire canister of bear spray did nothing to the grizzly. I also disagree that attacks like this will continue to be rare. With climate change, all species are facing food scarcity and precarity. I reckon attacks like this will become more common, as predators struggle to find stable food sources.
