Dan: "Don't you FuCkiNG tELL mE hOw to Play SEA SPELLER"
I laughed so hard at this, Dan is usually so calm but Arin pushed the Sea Speller Button lol
I feel him though. If I brought out like, Chrono Trigger to someone who never played it and they told me what to do I'd be like "how DARE youuuuuuuu" lol
Danny once said.....
Arin: *laughs at Dan’s terror in various horror games*
Also Arin: *can’t handle a 40-year-old Fischer Price spelling game*
“Its not scary it’s cool as shit! It’s the bottom of the ocean!” - Dan the man deathly afraid of sharks
It's hilarious to me that the man with professed thalassophobia is standing his ground that the pitch black bottom of the ocean is NOT scary.
@@AislinKageno
I thought he was specifically scared of sharks, not entire bodies of deep water.
@@ThePowerofCutleries I think he specified something along the lines of "I just don't wanna be anything's food". Maybe thalassophobia entered the discussion during that, but I have no clue where to check for those episodes.
@@dowfreak7Yeah that's a toughie
This explains Dan’s heightened Wheel of Fortune puzzle solving skills.
His word recognition neural pathways are INSANE
LOL Just thinking on how the animated version could be Dan being a dolphin with a headset while Arin is a submariner freaking out in the vehicle.
Dan: this is wonderful
Arin: This is fckin scary!
PLEASE someone make this happen!
Hasn't happened
Honestly Itll never stop tripping me out that Rich Evans and Dan are the same age hahahaha, that's so nuts. You'd never be able to guess
Dan got so offended so quickly when arin tried to tell him how to play sea speller and it killed me
Arin wasn't wrong, though. If you have a limited number of moves, getting as many multiple-word combos as possible ends up letting you play the game longer. He was just being really backseat gamey in how he was trying to get that point across. It shocked me that Arin was noticing words Danny didn't even see, considering his history with Wheel of Fortune (and the E-W-E debacle).
I definitely found myself shouting "EAT! SWEAT AND BLEAT" at 15:17 when Danny grabbed "AND" to make "BLAND"
@@Manigeitora They're not exactly going for a world record, here.
@@Manigeitora he wasn't even that backseat gamey, Dan just gets defensive fast when Arin talks about his childhood games in any way
@@emiel549 it's so true, dan is the exact kind of person that arin gets so heated about when he talks about games he hates and then talks about the people that get butthurt in the comments for him not liking those games, even though it doesn't get rid of how they personally feel about the game and nor does it taint the memories of the game. I love it.
Ewe arent wrong 🤣
Dan going “You’re just a bitch” actually made me choke on water
18:36 (I'm just gonna leave this here for reference)
you were watching underwater too?
I should know better than to drink anything while watching my bois
"I'm just trying to optimize your playstyle." -Every backseat gamer, Ever.
13:05 According to the instruction manual (scanned and hosted at archive org), "Hidden in the ocean depths are 'magic' words. If you create one of them, you will automatically descend to the next level. These 'magic' words all relate to the ocean in some way."
The manual also has the credits.
Ah, it looked like there weren't new possible combinations so I thought it was some bonus for that.
oh god, I thought it glitched or started a cursed cartridge route
I like how Sea Speller is actually a proper game. Like, obviously it’s for little kids, but there is still an element of strategy there, with you being able to set up three word combos, potentially. There’s no penalty for not doing so, but it’s gotta feel good to get three at once.
The penalty is wasted time since there's a timer
@@thegothicprotector3573 That actually makes it better! I didn’t realize that at first, but you’re right.
@@GooTheMighty neither did they dan even says at the beginning he loved it for that reason and they only realize literally as the timer hits 1 in typical grumps style 🤣
A modern remake of Sea Speller with multiplayer would actually make for a pretty fun party game.
I remember Dan talking about Sea Speller way back in the Mega Man 2 playthrough during Crash Mans stage because the level gets darker as you climb higher.
I’m so glad he gets to revisit this.
13:05 From the game description, "certain 'magic words' (all related to the sea) will automatically send you to the next level to really speed things along". Dan skipped that level because he formed the word "crab".
29:53 In Japanese, "kareteka" (空手家) is someone who practices karate (which literally means "empty handed", since karate is an unarmed martial art). The suffix "ka" (家) is used after a noun to indicate someone's occupation, pursuits, disposition, etc.
I want an animated of Dan as a happy little spelling dolphin and Arin as a terrified old-timey scuba diver, what with the round helmets and such.
(I'm honored that this idea received so much praise! Thanks guys :3)
Yes! Brilliant
An equally good concept would be a "banter-style" animated where Arin and Dan are both just talking to each other in the sub as the dolphin helps them.
@Check This Game Or Shoocharu
Do it
Yes! And Dan is all happy and peaceful but Arin keeps getting attacked by scary sea creatures :D
Watching Dan have fun gushing about these old games is one of my favourite things and it made me sad when he said, "thanks for bearing with this" as if we'd hate this kind of content.
Dan being happy makes me happy
Dan is always very apologetic. "I fast forwarded, I don't think the lovelies would want to bare through that." "I'm sorry for that, we should have just paused." He's so afraid we'll be upset
@@Skrighk i think it's just him being a decent person. he's considerate of the show.
"We're going back home :)"
Dan is so adorable.
Dan's nostalgia blinding him to the fact that fear of the dark is the single most common fear among children(and some adults) is the funniest thing.
I have a mild fear of the dark. Makes playing horror games really interesting for me.
Dan: "This game helps you develop language skills"
"But it's very... A long time ago"
Weed will do that to you.
if there’s anyone i’m willing to indulge in a nostalgia trip with, it’s these two lads
Danny and Arnold
Same its fun watching them play a game they hate but i get the same enjoyment watching the play games they love
Nice shen profile pic 👀
@@literallywhy6162 lmao thanks
I appreciate Arin realizing that Dan is genuinely invested in this one and dialing back the sarcasm by like a thousand percent.
Dan being so nostalgic and making the parallel from this to songwriting made me so emotional. Even though I didn’t grow up with this game I felt so happy watching him play it 🥰
Swump sounds like a possible future name for Link xD
Oh my god that needs to happen
Swump for BOTW2

SWUMPLZthe3rd
It can't be because it has to be made up at the spot, the improv is necessary.
"Ken...? Ken isn't a word."
Yes it is. So is Fen and Fay.
Ken - perception.
Fen - bog/marsh
Fay - fairy
I always thought the fairy one was fEy, but English is not my primary one and I never bothered to look it up
@@FunkyMonkey1990 fey is also correct! The word has multiple spellings, including fey, fay, and fae.
@@theodorec1882
yeah, I usually default to Fey, and then sometimes Fae, but Fay is also a legitimate spelling
Beyond mortal ken, in the fens amongst the fay.
@@FunkyMonkey1990 For some words in america with a british origin we change the E to A. Fey became fay, Grey is spelled Gray, etc.
“I missed the opportunity for Kock with K!”
the C on the screen: “Am I not a joke to you?”
This comment has layers
@DIO dont touch my dog
Dan: yay the bottom of the ocean!
Also Dan: Sharks are the most terrifying thing.
We're not really here for the gameplay, so you guys do you. Whatever makes for good conversations is good. After 10 years of this, we come here for you guys.
speak for yourself, that sea speller gameplay was hypnotic for me
I love when Dan gets to play nostalgic games, he's so sweet when he describes everything as "delightful" please keep making happy Dan videos!
Imagine thinking that the lovelies wouldn’t like a nostalgia video for the boys
The words you can make got a bit sinister when at the bottom. "Flail" "dread" "scare"
lol arins a bit right
Yeah and then for a brief moment, the dolphin turned to look at the screen and mouthed the words "Help me"
And plead
@@mediocreandworse59 lmaoo
The coral also makes like a huge smiling face where it looks like you are swimming around in a mouth.
@@mediocreandworse59 when?? Timestamp?
I can see what Arin means, it is somewhat eerie when the game starts getting darker, though I attribute that more to being used to subversive creepy/scary games these days, that start off cute then get sinister as you go on, it definitely has that vibe. But as a kid you wouldn't know that, so there would be no reason to feel nervous.
It's like "they breathe"
Now I kinda want to see a game that presents itself as a spelling game but progressively gets creepier...but like, stays a spelling game the whole time. (And no, Typing of the Dead isn't what I'm looking for)
@@the13throse You just spell progressively harder words while spooky things slowly start happening, and it’s building up, occasionally you have to spell a spooky word or phase, then at the end you spell like, “Run.” or something like that..
Yeah, that sounds like it could be pretty cool.
Sea Speller, but when you reach the bottom you only have one word sponge to choose from. It seemingly spells words that are nonsensical, until you realize too late that you've spelled out the entire Cthulhu chant.
@@1Hawkears1That was a good ass game
I can totally see a horror version of Sea Speller, where the darker it gets, the more disturbing the words become, leading to you unwittingly compiling some horrifying fourth-wall breaking message.
Oh wait, this game ALREADY does it with "scare" and "dread".
Still, I wound't mind if somebody made that horror version and made Dan play it.
not everything has to be a creepypasta
@@A2Z83 Maybe not, but I believe it would still be a very cool idea, going along the lines of FNAF and Tattletail, and other games that tap into childhood nostalgia.
@@illogicalparadox those are bad games
@@A2Z83 To you.
or one where it's not horror themed at all and you just spell bad words.
I can already hear the joy in Dan's voice and it's so wholesome!
I love this series already, it’s really wholesome
It’s always fun to see them play something they have a memory or attachment to in my opinion
@Buddhist States of America begging for likes on your repeated comment huh
I let out a audible awww
It’s like the wheel of fortune for kids for Arin. He just yells out random nonsense words and tries to get them to stick
GEORGE WASHINGTON
I love how it goes from Dan gushing over the deep sea wile Arin cowers in fear to Dan just speed bagging people's crotches while Arin cheers him on. This needs a clever animated adaptation, for sure.
Dan trying to hold back his giggling like a school girl from the nostalgia is honestly the cutest thing I've ever heard
All of us were probably like the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme when we figured out a word before they did
"I could get past like, two guys in this game."
Okay, good to see my brother was about on par at this game.
I got to the part where a bird starts wrecking your shneez
The heartwarming feels brought a tear to my eye, and then I wiped the tear but there was jalapeno sauce on my finger from the taco bell I'm eating and now my eye really fucking hurts.
Why did you do this to me The Game Grumps? I will find revenge somehow.
Seeing danny with legit happiness over his child hood is priceless
This man is a grumps treasure. 👍
This game will be great for Arin! He’ll learn how to spell eye correctly! 😂
Honestly though, it’s so much fun to hear how excited Dan is to play this 🥰
Poor guy didn't know what "eye" was either. This is a changing point for him- they grow up so fast..
It's so simple to spell eye, E-W-E, Eye.
It will just reinforce the spelling of EWE incorrectly. He'll be like E-W-E... "eye!"
“Arin! We learned a word playing Sea Speller!”
Sold, please play more. I love this.
I just finished rewatching their FireRed playthrough and Dan saying Burtersner at 12:15 really just gave me the closure I needed
I desperately want a series of Arin and Dan just playing old games like this. It’s very peaceful and relaxing, it would make a great sleep aid series. Sorry I said this a bit late.
Absolutely 😎
Gotta love the nostalgia conversations 😌 they're my favorites
@Buddhist States of America Who is "huh", and why they want them likes?

I'm sick rn and this is such a comfy video. You can just hear Dan's love for these games in his voice and its nice :]
The sheer joy they both have while playing Karateka makes me smile 😊 love these guys
Heh, playing children's learning games makes me want to see them do good ol' Math Blaster. Nothing like zapping trash and building rockets. It's like a prequel to KSP!
And then they can play Froggy Fractions!
@@heartofgoldfish Oh man, a short Frog Fractions series would be great. The finale might get demonetized for bug porn, though.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who loves playing games from my childhood. Who cares if they’re for 5 year olds!
Same, it’s no different than watching a movie from years ago. Still has a memory of happiness 💯
Y’all ever played “Putt putt saves the zoo”?
@@bluedragon4055 I loved that game! The little song at the beginning was great 👍🏻
@@bluedragon4055 wow that is throwback! I googled it and definitely remember playing this or a game similar
I still love watching Blues Clues and other shows I watched as a kid.
Arin plays this game the same way he plays wheel of fortune: "glid, smid, and beid!"
32:29 - Dudes just keep coming as long as you are in that long-ass walkway, so in between dudes you got to run to close the distance - otherwise you wind up fighting way more guys than you'd otherwise have to.
he ran once then locked into fighting stance and never looked back
I was so invested watching this, I couldn't breathe when the timer was in the single digits and Dan was just swimming back and forth. I was in all honesty on the edge of my seat.
"The power of the sack compelled me!" Dan Avidan 2021
Absolute best comment that has me still laughing! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dan: “This game isn’t scary at all!”
Game: “SCARE. FLAIL. DREAD.”
"Deep in his fortress, the evil lord gloats over his lovely captive, the princess."
My tired brain on painkillers after surgery:
_And there the Necromancer grinned; The Princess stood frozen; Yet still so hot beside him (Damn!)_
Arin: "I'm trying to optimize your playstyle"
From the same person that had a 20 minute rant when fans tried to tell Dan how to play Paper Mario.
It’s like the sibling rules. “Only I’m allowed to make fun of my sibling!!”
More like:
Comments: "Use your shield! It's way easier!"
Arin: "FUCK SHIELDS. I'll _NEVER_ block!"
It's ok Dan, a spelling game might help Arin learn to spell "eye"
Ewe*
The word ken is beyond Arin's ken.
Me: Glock!
Arin: Glock!
Me:
Me:"Cock! Oh wait that's not the right number of letter nor is there a sponge for it"
The moment everything turned gray was pretty unsettling
Dan: "Thanks for bearing with me."
Me: Bearing with you? This is awesome!
dan sounds giddy with excitement and i could not be happier. best way to start the day
This explains Dan's intense love of dolphins. So intense.
"I'm just trying to optimize your play style!" are the kinds of words you don't wanna hear come out of the Arin Hanson.
Dan playing games while Arin vehemently cheers him on is my favorite thing ever
12:27 was expecting Arin to say "THERE'S NO WAY YOU PLAYED THIS A MILLION TIMES!!!"
That’s a lot of times!
As someone who is terrified of the ocean, I completely agree with Arin that this is scary!
Well maybe if you played this as a kid you wouldn't be as scared of the ocean.
I'm also terrified of the ocean
I can't even watch the Ocean's Eleven movies or listen to "Ocean Man" without cowering in fear
It's just a really big lake
I get yelled at for talking about sharks whole swimming in the ocean 🤣 love body surfing
I’m not afraid of the ocean in videos and movies but I’m terrified irl lol
I love this, and I love watching Danny be a big sweet nerd, reliving beloved childhood games.
Arin having a conversation with himself killed me
Dan's not even right.
The number isn't "how many words you need to win," because it only goes down one even when they guess multiple words. And it DOES go down, even when he guesses NO words.
It's a countdown of how many attempts you can make until game over, and the objective is to get as far down as you can.
So there IS kind of a time limit, and it is optimal to get as many words at a time as you can
I think it's supposed to represent the breathable air left in the submarine. There;s a few times it goes down twice between Dan's attempts, or when it only goes down once after two. It's a countdown timer, just each tick is longer than a second.
I timed it, it counts down 1 every 10 seconds.
ecco the dolphin was my absolute favorite game ever as a kid, I would love to see you guys play it one day on the channel, it’s a very very fun game, I also have to agree with Dan that this is cool as shit :)
Ecco took me 15 years to beat. That game.. goes places. Aliens.. time travel... superpowers. Its wild.
@@OriionCygnus it was one of the coolest games that I’ve ever played
Dan, this made me so happy. I have an entire computer that I exclusively use as a windows 97 emulator for my educational childhood games. So happy you got to play this ❤️
This was wonderful and relaxing to watch. I love that they read the credits for the game since it didnt have any
Humanity's two schools of thought on exploring the ocean, right there in Sea Speller
you know sometimes as someone in their mid 20s i feel old then i watch dan talk about his childhood being in 1984 and i suddenly dont feel old anymore
If only Dan remembered that you can go in and out of the fighting stance so you can actually run.
Rewatching this in the background at work and getting way too distracted trying to see what words will work 😂 such a lovely little game! Love when they play these type of classic games.
My version of this was on the "Socrates" learning system, a keyboard that attached to the tv. Then came the excellent "Super Muncher" series.
Oh man, Socrates was *my jam* as a kid. I loved the composer game where you could just make music.

I know Dan sometimes reads these. My wife sent me a Camea from Danny for Father's Day and it was an amazing gift. Just want to say I appreciate your genuineness. Thanks Danny!
I saw the title and I knew this was going to be a treat. It's cute how old Dan is sometimes
This makes me feel nostalgic even though I was too young for these games.
I know it’s intentional, but every time Dan gets hit and makes that noise all I can think of it “this gentleman is slapping me”
Sea Speller is such a cute game that it also made me emotional, Dan. I wanna give you a hug, I wanna give every lovely a hug. I hope you have a peaceful day everybody :)
I didn't think it was possible to adore Danny more than I already do, but watching him be all sweetly nostalgic over his childhood games has definitely done the job. Love you, Danny. I'm glad you had fun. 🥺💕
6:30 "Crunch" is also an onomatopoeia and a real word.
Awww Danny's too cute when hes happy about a nostalgic game from his childhood
Dan: Thank you for putting up with this.
99% of the lovelies: We're happy that you're happy
“But can you stand up to my- ow.”
"MY INFINITE POWER"
When I was a kid, I had Karateka on the PC my parents let me have in my room, which only ran DOS, and had a button on the monitor to toggle between amber and green.
ALSO: Since y'all asked, a karateka is a practitioner of karate. "Ka" can be a suffix that basically means "doer of this thing," like someone who creates manga is a mangaka. I'm sure it gets deeper, but that's my basic understanding.
Danny's light heartedness and genuine happiness to this game is so enjoyable! ☺️
I LOVE 2021 GRUMPS!
Seriously you guys are in a rennaisance period, living it up, loving the old school.
I gotta say, I'm REALLY impressed with Karateka's animation. I don't know ANY game from that era with fluid animation like that.
“Repetitive Nut-shots” sounds like a band name.
I feel like this could easily be modded into a horror game.
yeah it's ripe for the creepypasta
It kinda has like "game you got from a car boot sale at the start of a creepypasta" vibes
Game plays normally until you get to the very bottom, letting you spell out something like "Don't open your closet".
Or, I dunno, "jet fuel can't melt steel beams".
Secret messages mixed in that make you feel uncomfortable
Maybe even adding that aspect of the game that lets it read your username so if your playing on your PC, it'll make you spell out your own name
There's something really nice about two guys just having dumb fun like this. I also really want to see them play Subnautica again.
Working out, and instead of listening to music I choose this, lol. I love your show guys. 😂
Whenever they got to the second game, all I could think of is: “Itsa me! MARIKO!!”
Arin: ask Siri for the definition of "thalassophobia"
The fear of being killed by sea creatures. Which really sucks if you're also attracted to mermaids. Makes for some confusing erections, let me tell you.
I think it's actually the fear of deep/open water.
I was way more invested in Karateka than i thought I'd ever would be with a Commodore game.
I don’t normally back Arin on anything but I’d be 100% be freaked out as a kid
Chin Chap sounds like a character made by Arin Hanson.
