He contacted 54 of them and found that - like a lot of other positions - a lot of these guys just sort of cruised on talent, and once they were identified as talented everything was presented TO them, rather than them having to seek things out. And it effected their development. That competitive drive to be the best just never materialized. That's not to say that it couldn't have been nurtured, but he also pointed out that there are almost no sports psychologists being made available to these kids to help them process things. I guess it kind of depends on what you're looking for as far as being competitive goes. Pretty much any player can be competitive for 3 hours on game day. Of course, how many of them kind of call it a day if things get out of hand? Or simply because they're bat-shit crazy like Antonio Brown? I guess what I look for regarding a competitive nature is somewhere more than a guy who will play every down, and less than Michael Jordan. Of course, you could "just" be a runner. I ran the 800 and I would say stretch thoroughly before every activity and always warm up with sideways motion drills. Also, you may have seen Nick warm up at a horizontal bar or wall where he swings his legs, one at a time side to side in front of him. That would be a good start to avoid future groin injury. Once you get into higher competition, you will need to prioritize track and not risk injury by doing other risky activities. But at your current age always remember to have fun✌️
