    Hi Eli I’m new to gardening so learning lots ,I have a very small garden I’ve never grown anything before in my life lol🤣🤣 but I’ve just tried some tomatoes,Carrots,spring onions,garlic and some lettuce,I love to cook Indian and Chinese food so thought I would give this self growing a bash lol,I’ve only just found your channel and you make me smile so much with your down to earth attitude and honesty,totally love ya ❤️ you are a breath of fresh air keep up the great work you are doing and stay safe 💋

      awww thanks Steve, you've made me go all gooey now!
      I am also a massive fan of Chinese and Indian food (and Chin and Choo who are my current favourite youtubers have given me permission to do some of their stuff on this channel, so watch out). Glad you are finding the channel useful, getting started as a new gardener is fun, exciting, terrifying and confusing as all hell :)
      If I'm right, I spy a baggies shirt in your profile pic, so a wee bit of advice for you then is to keep an eye on sun and temperature. You should find things a bit easier than I do for outdoor crops since your weather will be a wee bit warmer and sunnier, but you may still struggle with tomatoes outdoors. Just keep an eye on things like frosts overnight :)
      You'll do great with root veg like carrots, onions, garlic etc and your lettuce will come up fast :)
      Glad to have you onboard our mad journey and looking forward to updates. Good luck!!!!!!

    Can't wait to see more updates on how the capillary matting works for you. Really interesting.

    And the control pot lacks a plant with transpiring leaves and roots drawing up the water. I would think that a control with a plant would be even more moist as a consequence. Capillary mats definitely work if setup correctly. My first one didn’t but I’d not levelled the table so gravity (and a long gap between the pots and the water reservoir below) was working against the capillary action. Fixed it by levelling the table and shortening the distance between the tub of water and where the plants were. Recognise this is from several years ago - just really wanted to encourage others to give this a go and if it doesn’t initially work don’t right it off but take a moment to check nothing disrupting this very useful setup. 😊

    Thanks for this - I know it's an 'old' video in UA-cam terms but was just what I was looking for. Currently I've just got the matting lining the bottom of a gravel tray, and wanted to avoid having a separate tray as a reservoir as space is increasingly at a premium. Why I didn't think of simply raising it up - who knows?! Duh! Although i'm not into growing edibles, I'll be checking out your other practical tips. 😃 🙏

    Eli -- I watched this video a second time as I am starting to prepare the greenhouse for spring seedlings....do you think you'll use the mats again this year? Did you find success? My greenhouse pots seem to dry-up so quickly with the heat that I thought this would be a good method.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  4 роки тому +4

      I think I probably will. It was a really good way to keep on top of watering. My two things are though (apart from not planting too much), keep the pots moving otherwise the roots eventually grow into the mats, watch out for water levels to avoid mould.
      But it definitely worked :)

    Do you believe capillary mats will work well with a peat moss/vermiculite/ perlite mix that is being held in a 10 x 20 tray with hole slits? I know peat moss has quite a time absorbing water initially, but just would like an opinion from someone with experience?
    Also, do you mind to provide a link to the producer's mats that you use?
    Thank you!!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  3 роки тому +1

      Hey coffee sploosh
      I'm afraid I can't comment on how efficient things might be with your mix as I don't use peat products.
      In theory things should work, but I can only comment as theory.

    can't find the update to this. I want to as I have some large gravel trays that I would like to use.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  4 роки тому +1

      they would do awesome. My set up is basically a large tray for the water reservoir with some sort of platform in it to lay the matting across. The mat just hangs over the end into the reservoir and "wicks" the water up onto the platform. So basically the pot bottoms are on the platform, on the damp mat, but not in the water.
