BMW R1150 GS Off-Road Ride | I think I found the limit of its off road ability.

- Опубліковано 27 тра 2023
- This Oilhead BMW GS R1150 Off-Road ride was to see how the bike felt in a more technical, rocky area, and it did not disappoint. There's something special about buying an adventure bike and taking it off-road, because it feels like it shouldn't be able to do it.
Backstory: I've bought it as a project motorcycle so that I could start adventure motorcycle riding and become an Adventure Bike Rider, bringing another element to this channel. I need to mention I bought it off the internet without seeing it for £2295 and this was the cheapest at the time and that's because It had no service history with it, so this is all a new experience and an exciting one at the same time.

As always, thanks very much for watching the video! I've been enjoying riding the GS off-road lately and showed me how capable adventure bikes are, and I'm pleased I bought this bike as a mini project and got it to the point that I can confidently take it off-road. It hasn't gone to plan, but to be fair, the terrain I've been riding isn't forgiving, and it will help show the weaknesses, and it's safe to say that this bike's weaknesses have shone through so I have to repair the stanchions and the sump guard which you can see in the upcoming videos 😁.
Just watched this again - love it!
@@steves6614 hi Steve! Thanks very much, I’m glad you’re enjoying it, this was a fun video to make and the showed me the bike’s character.
Love these vids, i have just got a GS and its great to start seeing good in depth videos on these, cracking bit of kit for price
Awesome, I hope you’re having fun on yours too 👍🏻. They’re fantastic aren’t they, I didn’t really know what I was getting in to but have enjoyed every moment with it so far. Good bang for buck 😄
This video, is amazing! I've tried some off road with my 1150GS but it feels (and is) SO HEAVY sometimes! Hahahaha!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting, I’m really glad you enjoyed it!
I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed yours off-road too, they’re so much fun aren’t they! I was definitely feeling the weight of it at the end of the ride hahaha!!
Great video been toying at buying an 1150 for touring and doing some green laning I’ve subscribed Keep up the good work
Hi Dave! Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing, it’s very kind of you and I really appreciate it!
Sounds like you’ve got some good plans!! You’ll have to let me know if you do take the plunge, the 1150 seems to be a favourite for a lot of people and I can now see why.
12:40 Your openness is what got me to subscribe. That, and the trueness of the title. Keep it up.
Thanks very much Georgios, it’s been a great journey so far and I’ll do my best to continue 👍🏻.
Happy Birthday! 🎉
Thanks for the update, I've been following your service & repair series for the GS with much interest.
I've been testing my R1150GS off-road too & so far it's been a blast...I really need to get more experience ready for the ABR festival in June.
Hi Angus, thanks very much mate!!
No problem, it’s been a fun journey and long May it continue 😄.
Ah man that’s class!! Off-road riding is so much fun ay, glad you’re enjoying it as well 👌🏻. I’m hoping ABR will be ace, are you taking the R1150?
Yes, I'll be on my GS too, seeing what I can get out of the 22 year old.
I agree with your point about the suspension but it's probably better than my off-road skill level for the time being.
@@LessBeard Awesome stuff!! All that matters is you’re enjoying it mate 👌🏻
Happy belated birthday🎉 I am going back and forth with myself about buying a 2004 with 31,000 miles on it. I am in the US.
Thanks very much Owen! Just remember, buyer’s remorse doesn’t last very long when you’re enjoying the bike 😄. On a serious note, I’m sure if you buy it or not, you’ll have done it for the right reasons 👍🏻
I enjoy a bit of masochism on a Monday morning with my eggs on toast, that poor old GS 🤣🤣 Good to see you putting her through her paces
Hahaha quite the way to start the day 😂. Fair play though, they’re built tough 💪
Another excellent video. I ended up putting TFX suspension (front & rear) on my 1150 GS Adv over the past winter. It really does make a huge difference. Right now I have Shinko 705s on the bike but just purchased the Motoz GPS that I'll be putting on soon for an upcoming trip.
You’re too kind Steve 😄. That’s interesting, I’ll take a look at those and add them to the list of things to save up for.
The Motoz look like a good tyre. My friend has them on his Tenere and they seem to do well both on and off road. Sounds great, where you headed?
@@MALVSMACHINE TFX is pricy but worth it. This summer I'm doing a loop leaving Maine, USA. I'll take the North East Backcountry Discovery Route (NEBDR), north to south. At the end of that I'll just on the Cross PA Adventure Ride, and then head up into Canada and trek back to Maine. Two years ago I traversed the country E to W on the Trans American Trail (TAT). Last summer I went S to N on the Continental Divide Ride. Western US is wonderful!
@@steves6614 that sounds absolutely epic!! You mentioned the TAT before and I still haven’t had chance to look in to it but I’ll get in to that this evening. Think I’ll get these things on the bucket list 👌🏻
Another cracking video and the editing between shots while having the chat carry on perfectly was great stuff dude. It's great seeing everything improve with each video, keep it up! Oh Also Happy Belated Birthday Dude, I got to this video a day to late to make it on time haha
Hahaha thanks very much dude, it was weird not having you as the first or second to comment 😄. Glad you enjoyed and really happy you can see the progress👌🏻. It’s a fun learning process and it’s nice having a bit more time to do it so I’ll keep on learning and hopefully getting better 😄. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the birthday wishes. Had a nice cup of tea and spent the day editing 😆👍🏻. I’m currently editing the video showing what’s broken on the bike 😂
@@MALVSMACHINE Yeah every time you release the video I'm normally either reading stuff on my phone or on UA-cam on my PC. So I've got in quickly to watch it and comment, but damn the amount of comments you got on this videos you'll soon be struggling to reply to everyone 🤣
@@gvnthomas ah that makes sense haha. Mad init, I’ve been quite busy replying to comments today on a few of the other videos as well so it’s been quite fun and I’m enjoying the engagement.
Happy birthday!
Ciao ;)
Thank you! 👍🏻
Limit? GSs have no limits 😂
Hahaha 😂
Great video I have owned 2x1150 GS great bikes looking for a 3rd Gsa like yours
Hi Kevin, thanks for watching!
Ah man that’s class, I bet they were fun, and it shows how good they are that you want to get another one 👌🏻. You’ll have to let me know how your search goes 👍🏻
Enjoyed that! Road tyre pressures or did you come down a bit? Asking for a friend😆
Ah great, thanks for watching!
Let your mate know I keep the road pressures because the weight of the bike helps the tyre keep traction 😄👍🏻. Would’ve probably dropped them a bit if I struggled for traction, but not by a lot 👍🏻.
Happy birthday 🎉
Cheers dude 😁👍🏻
Happy birthday
Thanks Melvin 😁👍🏻
What do you use to find routes in the uk?
Hi Derek. I use the Trail Riders Fellowship’s ‘trail wise 2 app’ to find the legal byways which is much easier than trying to find them on an OS Map. Sadly, there are not many of the byways about these days so I have to either pay to ride at an organised event, and on some rare occasions I have access to private land but, they are very rare occasions and only for a short amount of time. Hopefully these links can help.

@MALVSMACHINE thanks for you reply, I want to get more experienced and exposure off road on my 1150gs, just to develop my own skill set and to vary my riding....appreciated.
@@derekwilliams-ip4yh no problem at all. Awesome stuff, sounds like you have a great journey ahead and the variety definitely makes it more fun ay! Let me know how everything goes ✊🏻
Have you joined the Ukgsa forum yet
Hi Andrew, I haven’t but will look in to that this evening 👍🏻
You should start an off road school
Haha that would be a dream 😄
rather you than me, mate 😂
😂 I enjoyed it at the time, but I’ve just had to order some new parts which means this particular little jolly cost me £55 😂
@@MALVSMACHINE Took my 1150 in for repairs after it died on me at the weekend. Suspected tank internals - more specifically, split U-hose. Got it AA recovered (they sent a contractor). Getting it off the flatbed and down the narrow ramp was bloody nerve wracking!! I could only put one foot down. Suddenly, a four foot drop looked like 10. Not used to a bike of 240kg yet, after having late '90s sports bikes.
@@Unfunny_Username_389 ah man, that’s a pain! I take it it’s still in being diagnosed?
Oof, I can imagine! I’ve seen too many video of people sending their bikes off ramps or the back of trucks so can imagine how you felt there! They’re so awkward when they’re not moving aren’t they, so we’ll done on keeping it upright 👌🏻
@@MALVSMACHINE Yeah bike's still in. It may be something more serious than internal fuel line(s), but some knowledgeable several guys on the ADV forum, and a UK BMW message board, seem fairly confident its tank plumbing.
The exact thing happened to me in late summer '17 when I bought a zx9r w/ 18k on it for £1.8k. Stranded me a couple of times in the first 500-1000 miles, with perished plumbing. Once simple things like that were sorted, I rode it to 98k with minimal aggro (headstock bearings were 20k max on those bikes though - so I got through a few sets of them lol).
Talking of headstock bearings, I hope yours have survived the rocks and ruts of your excursion. You mentioned a £50 bill - what was that for? Cheers!
Fingers crossed it’s just the plumbing then dude!
Fair play mate, that’s some smiles for miles there ay! Hope those 20k replacements weren’t too close an interval 😄
Mine seem to be alright at the moment thankfully. The fork seals have gone, so I’ll do a full service on those in the near future, but the £55 was on new screws for the sump guard as I snapped 3 out of the 4 screws and bent the spacer 😆. It seems the sump guard doesn’t really do the same job as a dirt bike’s sump guard so I’ve learned my lesson there!
Look up berrt bmws converts front end to enduro forks long rear shock and so weight reduction shes way way more capable
Look up groove media aswell laddo rides a gs like a 250
Hiya Lee. I had a look at that kit, it looks awesome but costs almost as much as the bike cost me haha. Could be an interesting change in the future though so thanks for taking the time to comment.
I’ve not been able to find him but sounds class!
