BMW R1150 GS Won't start! Starter motor replacement on my 1150 GS.
My BMW R1150 GS would not start off the button and the starter motor would struggle to turn the engine over. Sometimes it was fine but other times it would struggle to the point that it would trigger the relay to click and the clock to reset. It always run off a bump start so figured it wasn't anything dodgy.
To just make sure it wasn't the battery or generator, I put a charger on overnight and tried starting the next day.... I knew this wasn't the issue but just wanted to rule it out. As you saw, the starter motor was still struggling to turn over.
I tried to clean the starter motor out but it made no difference so ordered a new starter motor and fitted it :-).

Its very interesting for me that you also have a T7, but you love to take this thing on roadtrips. I also have one and its a blast, lovely motorcycle. One question also, i recall you took it off as well with the metzelers. I am also curious but also a total off road noob, i am fairly tall tho. @@Bob-huisbaas hi Bob, I hope you’re well! Yeah, it’s a funny one…. I really enjoy the T7 but I keep getting drawn back to the GS for the comfort and seating position. I like the fact I could stretch my legs over the boxer heads on the days when we were getting the miles in 😆. The Metzeler tourance tyres done well in the dry dirt and loose gravel but the moment they touched anything that was slightly muddy they lost traction, so I’d say you’ll be safe as long as it’s dry. I Definitely recommend it, just take it slow and ride with someone as it’s a heavy bike to try and get off your leg if you have a bit of a mishap 👍🏻. Let me know how it goes 👌🏻

Hi Billy. I haven’t really experienced what you’re feeling there but it does sound like the suspension is too soft and you could be going through the travel quite quickly - the rebound may be a bit too slow as well? It would probably be best to reset back to the standard setting and then work from there, to find what feels better for wherever you’re riding.

Hi Mal, so the starter motor, and yes it is a component that require some attention. You can strip down it completely and refurbish. I have done this to mine. He can fail completely due an internal metal plate that keep separated the internal planetary gear (full of grase) and the coils of the rotor. If the plate detatch from it's place can cause a short circuit in the coils, and this can happen randomly, sometimes it works fine sometimes it seems like a weak battery. Second way to fail is the permantent magnet that could detach from the case and the consequence is a weak torque on the shaft. Third scenario brushes worn out. Than you can experience the case of a faulty solenoid, that external cylinder with the faston attached, in this case no starter at all, or a failure of the mechanism actuated by the solenoid, in this case the gear will not engage with the teeth of the engine flyweel and the starter turn freely. Than could fail the internal power switch (bottom side of the solenoid) actuated by the solenoid again, this is the power switch that connect the positive from the battery to the internal coils of the motor via brushes, in this case no starter. Ther is a chance that all is ok but the starter turn slowly, this is the case of lack of grease in the internal gear and presence of brushes/clutch dust that jam the shaft. But the worst case is a jammed power switch in on position (the power switch actuated by the solenoid) in this case you cannot stop it until you are fast enough to disconnect the positve cable on the starter motor, and if you are not fast, the starter can set the entire motorcycle on fire. This cable come direct from battery and you have to be carefull in case you replace the starter, for safety reason you have to disconnect the battery. On the engine case ther is a pin that engages with the starter motor case (to keep it in the right position) and are good practics to grease it or it can seize and broke down during the next starter removal. Hope you are not bored at this time, it's amazing how much things are just on the starter motor... Ciao ;)

The old girl got what she needed and it makes a hell of a difference. I’m annoyed I didn’t change the starter motor back when I thought about changing it as the failure meant we were bump starting the bike at every fuel stop and the start of every day from Monday to Thursday 😆 but it’s all part of the story and added a bit more fun to what was an enjoyable trip. I’ve enjoyed my break and look forward to getting back in to making videos and learning along the way. Thanks for watching!

@@bikeserv Yes they’re great bikes. I recently got back from a tour around Scotland and loved every minute of riding it. All clearances and torque values were checked in the video that followed this one as I was waiting on a delivery of new feeler gauges and torque angle gauge 👍🏻

I’ve just bought an 1150gs as a project. Also the cheapest on the internet but not in as good condition as yours…… in fact in considerably worse condition!🤣 At just over 700quid though I can’t complain too much! 💷💪

Ah man, that sounds awesome! I wish I could’ve found something like that when I was looking! £700 is a proper bargain fair play, plenty of fun to be had with that I’m sure 👌🏻. Are you going to be filming it or just happily tinkering in the background?
