  • One of the most famous and infamous books of the 20th century, "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger has been reviewed, criticized, banned, and scrutinized for decades. The book has inspired wonderful humanitarian artists and been used as a manifesto for heartless sociopaths to do horrible things. Writer and novelist Eric Muss-Barnes weighs in on why the book should be appreciated and how it is so often misunderstood.

I choose this book for my graduation project, I've been reading and listening to reviews the last couple of weeks and feels so lucky to listen to yours. It was an eye opening for me, although I liked the book but you made me fall for it even more
    Thank you so much

You are welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. It's always nice to know others connect with a story in a similar way.

I have finally completed my reading of the catcher in the rye with this review. I admit I was one of those who completely missed the reall message. And I am a very smart guy. And hold a very high opinion of my own intellect and wisdom and insight. But I have found something in this review that I have sought but rarely recongize (or perhaps I should say rarely admit). A guy who is truely smarter that I am andd can open my eyes to the obvious! Of course my biggest fear has always been that I am simply living in a fool's paradise and in reality I am just the world's biggest idiot. Now I know. I am an idiot. But so what. At least i can learn something I never realized before after looking at it for decades Eric thank you!. I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Like I said in my review, Mr. Salinger called the book _The Catcher In The Rye_ for a reason. That scene is the whole meaning. Holden wants to help the world from falling off the cliff, but the world resents his presence - just like the children in the rye field. Everything he experiences in the story are metaphors for that feeling of isolation and misunderstanding. Always struck me as odd when people failed to notice the theme, because the title gives it away.

Thank you, sir. That is very kind... Hey, wait a second! Are you inferring that my non-book-review videos are NOT outstanding?... I think that compliment just insulted me! LOL

Didn't know you had others! I'm guessing you are not talking off the top of your head, but you make it seem that way. Great delivery. New book website called readingportfolio.com We are sorting through some vids we like. M

Matt Pearson I have over 70 videos on this channel and not all of them are book reviews, so, yes, I have plenty of other content.
You are correct - my videos are scripted. But, since I write the scripts and I've been doing on-camera presentations for many years, I like to think I can make it sound fairly conversational. Easy to make ones own scripts sound natural. Much more difficult to do when other people are writing it.
If you like my reviews, check out the one for "The Essential Ellison" - I actually got the opportunity to meet Harlan after he saw it. Truly one of the highlights of my life.
I checked out your Reading Portfolio site. Interesting concept. Kind of a cross between Goodreads and BookTube, but with a college-application emphasis? Neat idea. I wish you all the best with it.
