    9:45- Fruit is called 'custard apple' or 'sugar apple' - really yummy sweet fruit; texture similar to soursop- soft & creamy. To eat: pinch a little 'hump' and pull, then savour the pulp inside, DO NOT ingest the green skin or the seeds. You may cut into half and scoop the inside pulp with a spoon.

    Great video Eli. Interesting that the business’s close for an hour so the employees can take a nap. Also interesting that everybody is thin and in good health. They haven’t adapted the typical american diet of eating 150 pounds of sugar per year that leads to health issues and kills people. Is all of the meat there lean because it is grass fed and not stuffed with grains and chemicals ?

    • @VietnamEli
      @VietnamEli  4 роки тому +3

      Yeah, a lot of small retail and office businesses close between 11:30 and 1 and people will eat lunch, and take a nap. I once went into a guitar shop around 2 pm and the sales guy was still sleeping on the floor.
      I think most if not all the local cattle is grass-fed, but I don’t know about chemicals. I don’t think they have to shoot them with the antibiotics like the grain-fed cattle in the US. Whether they use chemicals, such as to keep it from spoiling, I couldn’t say. The local beef is definitely chewier and less delicious than US beef.

    the fruit you don't know is called either Cherymoya (pronounced Cherry-Moya) or aka (Soursop); In Vietnamese, it's pronounced Mung-cow; in Asia known as the fruit-of-the-gods. The taste is heavenly. you have to let it ripen. then peel the outside; the inside is white with black seeds, so you take a bite then work the seeds out one-by-one in your mouth, the same way you would eat watermelon with seeds and spit out the seeds, you spit out these seeds.
    They are generally very expensive in the U.S. in LA where I live. about $8 to $9 a lb.; so 33,9k per lbs is very very cheap, about .75 cents a pound.

    Great video. I saw Big C in Da Nang when I was looking around in June but didn't go in and was curious. The prices are substantially less than where I shop in BKK like at Villa or even the Big C here. The Bombay Saphire gin was 649 baht (21.50 USD) there and 1250 baht (41.41USD) here at Em Quartier. Cheap gin and tonic using some good stuff! Food prices were very good too. I renew my Thai retirement extension next month and if denied due to immigration issues (health insurance) my landlord will refund my $2000 USD deposit otherwise if I break the lease I'm out of luck. I hope they deny me because I am burned out here and may move in December anyway. Still trying to find a way to ship my expensive furniture and household goods. Thanks for your help.

    • @VietnamEli
      @VietnamEli  4 роки тому

      I used to wear one in Saigon traffic, but not in Da Nang. The air is a lot cleaner here and doesn’t have a smokey smell, except on Buddhist holidays when they burn paper offerings. They really should need to stop that (I bet they will some day). There’s good trash collection in the city, so people don’t burn their trash or leaves. And yeah, I think the masks don’t really help, except maybe to keep the sun off your skin, which I think is the main reason people wear them.

If you don’t separate it, they will go through your trash to get it, but I put my recyclables in a separate bag to make it easy for them. You just put your bag(s) in front of your house and either a recycler or a city worker comes to pick it up in the morning, 7 days a week.
