Ah good ole white edges everywhere. A pet peeve of mine everytime I see them. Learn a little of what causes them, and if they really even matter, or maybe they're good (they aren't. but not necessarily bad either).

Loved your explanation. I've been wearing glasses for over 30 years and for the first time I got my new pair of glasses from that big fancy store at the mall and they have that frosted edge and don't like it one bit. It doesn't over $600 for the lenses and frame so I guess I have to go back and try to explain this to the manager 😂❤ Thanks for this informative video.

This one is more than skin deep and very complex if you’re not in the industry. I attempted to dial it back but not easily done. As to your original comment, better frame selection for high power is key.
Well I just found this video looking up if they could be polished. Just got my old frames back with new lenses. The frames were clear and I really liked them so I opted for new lenses this year. The came back not polished and have a terrible white ring! It has totally changed the look of the frames. They're not clear anymore. They are white. I'm really trying to decide if I go back and ask for help or just get totally new glasses.
If it’s just the lenses I would explain your concerns :) as a habit for any crystal frames it’s the one exception where we just polish by default in my shop. 😎. It’s an easy fix if that’s the only problem. If it’s the bevel selection too, it’s gonna require new lenses, but hopefully the shop stands behind their work.
I want all 4 of my eyes to look good. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to achieve a high quality look since the customer is paying for both the frames (point of sale purchase) and the lenses (custom fit). Older people are used to small shop attention to detail. I'll return a bad pair of glasses. This new thing of lenses having internal markings is cheap looking but, they were cut on axis correctly. Thankfully I've gone to contacts and I'm on to making sure my sunglasses look good. I'm 5'6"M and weigh 128lbs. I need all the cool factor I can get. 😆 🤣
I just got a new pair of glasses made. $670 from an independent local optician, and they came out having a white outline. I specifically asked and paid for the edge polishing to be done.
I couldn’t be certain if they were fully polished or not as I’m not an expert. But my last two pairs from, wait for it, Costco didn’t have this issue. Whether it’s a lack of polishing, beveling etc. they should not present a pair of glasses with that white outline. Calling them tomorrow to have it corrected or refunded.

It’s really more about what each individual’s tolerance for the appearance of it, as well as how the rx, frame, and fit affect the appearance of it. Heavy safety bevel and incline cut are the most common causes followed closely behind by poor bevel placement. Almost all things that happen with automated or limited knowledge running an edger. Polished or not doesn’t make much of a difference at the end of the day, and only changes how the bad effect looks. It can actually be worse when polished.
High prices don’t always mean high quality or high attention to detail/cosmetic result. For that matter, 670 won’t even get a complete set of glasses in my shop, so maybe I should bite my tongue a little more. 😂☠️
It’s hard for me to get my hands on a “bad” set. But maybe I could force myself to run one. Once sold a t Henri that someone took elsewhere to use their insurance for lenses and they absolutely ruined the look with HUGE (>2mm) white ring. Disgusting.
Can one purchase a pair of glasses lenses through you online? Having a lot of difficulty with a local optician that keeps putting heavy bevel on my lenses.@@ThatGlassesGuy03
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 this has something I've always been annoyed with prescription glasses so ive always gotten them polished, however isn't it pretty much impossible to prevent a "white" edge even if it looks great in indirect lighting, when you get hit with strong direct light every pair of glasses seems to light up of white at the bottom of the lenses, not so much at the top or right/left edges but the bottom always in direct light. also depending on the frame and polishing the edge may not also look good after polished because it sparkles when light hits it.
Sorry secret juice I missed your comment, however, anyone processing glass today is using a very heavy safety bevel. It’s unfortunate but the way it is. Even my glass lenses looked like absolute 🍑 but we don’t have the ability to finished glass lenses in house. The wheel required for that is a $10,000 upgrade on my edger, and well, we just don’t do enough of them to ever make that up :(
@wazup3333 it’s not necessarily impossible but requires a lot of work and effort. Polished edges definitely don’t eliminate the problem and I go over a lot of why they don’t in this video. Feel free to browse through my instagram and judge for yourself. All frames are shot under 3000 lumen 93 CRI professional LED studio lights.
I went to an expensive eye glass place and my lenses have a huge frosted ring. They are not understanding why I’m upset and said they can polish it … that is not going to help.
Unfortunately expensive doesn’t directly equate to good. I’ve seen many high end boutique opticals that deliver very poor fit/finish quality fact is, they just don’t know or understand the concepts often times.
I’m almost sure that machinery used by opticians also plays a role. One of the opticians edged my lenses using an automatic Chinese machine, while the optics was ok, there was a very prominent white edge on the lenses. I even perceived them subjectively, not just in front of the mirror. I asked another optician to edge the same brand of lenses for me, yet this time his machine was a modern Essilor one. His job was much better, there still remains some minor glow, but it’s nothing like the Chinese machine.
Effort and setup time of them makes the biggest difference. The brand of machine has some affect of course. The essilor machines are Chinese. So, there’s that. An engineer spent days setting mine up, and I’ve been constantly fine tuning ever since. The operator matters too ;).
I love your Review. I am far from snobby. But yes, if I pay $300 for a pair of glasses and they come back like a Walgreens cheap pair of reading glasses - you bet your butt. I am very unhappy. And as we all should be. Why pay hundreds of dollars and get junky glasses.

Honestly it's not even about price for me, it's more about just caring about your craftsmanship, no matter the price point, it doesn't take a ton of effort, it's just absent from so many these days. All automation. 😕
Got this very issue now. Got the glasses great condition no super frost rim. Then scratch one lenses not terribly but decided to order a new lens. They said they needed to trace the lens. Made no sense because they have the frame where I ordered it. The new lens arrived and the difference from the original lens was so apparent I couldn't believe they though it was acceptable. They said they would order both lenses new at no charge and both new lenses arrived with the super frost edge. Looks like ass completely. How did they go from original order arriving with no rolled edge and believe me parts of it rolled to a point messes with my peripheral vision. I'm a truck driver so having a good lens is important. When I said bith lenses are crap now they said most people don't care about the edges. Just looks cheap and I paid about $400. How do I convince them to not roll the edges? I mean I'm a paying customer and I don't want those frosty edges. Any ideas?
Most likely they changed labs between the orders and this is just what they get now. Very little control over finish and don’t know how to specify it when ordering from their lab.
This same thing is happening to me. Same lab, same frames, same lens material. How can they look so bad and different?! I know they aren’t rolled, but they have the look of rolled lenses when looking from the front when I’m wearing them. I’m assuming it’s the bevel, but I have no clue.
Oy, I JUST sent off 8 pairs Kirk&Kirk frames to Lensabl, (crystal, brightly colored frames) and the first two frames have come back with the white ring. On their site they say polished edges are for rimless, and i did not know any better and skipped the edge polish thinking I would not need it. WRONG. Based on what you have said it may not be just an issue of the polished edges, but beveling?? They make what you ask for, but is this on me, or on them? What SHOULD i be asking for? Ugghh. I’ve had some Tom Davies frames lensed via Lensabl, and both those were beautiful. Dangit. 8 PAIRS!!!
Ouch!! If it makes you feel any better I just had a customer bring in a Blake kuwahara and a T Henri for adjustments after doing lenses elsewhere and it was one of the worst sets of white ring I’ve ever seen… I told her to be sure if anyone asked where she got them clarify we did NOT do those lenses. ☠️ such a sad fate for such BEAUTIFUL frames. But she wanted to use her insurance for the lenses. Whatever.
At any rate, Kirk and Kirk are best done with a polished edge just for fluidity of look, however, that’s not going to make the white ring better, instead it only makes it reflections instead of just white (arguably a worse issue). Proper bevel and craftsmanship is key. Some of the newest and most advanced machines are the worst offenders because they’re meant to be totally automated but produce very subpar results when left to do so without a human hand at the helm.

Thanks for your video! I am about to spend $470 on lenses alone and the people working there act like I’m crazy when I mentioned getting polished edges to minimize the white ring. They promise they’ll do a great job but I’m still nervous to pay that much. The last glasses I got have a terrible white ring so I kept wearing my very old glasses because they don’t have the ring. In the end are you recommending NOT to polish if they do a good job otherwise?
Correct. Polish can make reflections worse and if the bevel isn’t set properly can still have a white ring (and even worse reflections).

@amandamiller2584 I universally hate rolled edges except where absolutley necessary for temple closure. Super high minus (where this is debatable) is already going to have limited scope in terms of salvageable cosmetic affect so here it’s function vs form. Polish, no polish, on rolled it’s all gonna look rough, but generally they’re done polished to get a more uniform look. I haven’t rolled an edge under -20 in my career. So there’s my thought. 🙃😂

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 So if I have a patient with -10 in a rectangle frame, is there anything I can do besides switching him into a round frame? I have a hard time putting patients in frames that don't fit and look appropriate with their face shape just to keep the lenses thinner..
I have a high prescription and I got big frames they look like googles and there’s a bunch of reflection on them

Wild story but needed to get new lenses due to scratches. Got an eye test as it was due and no changes so just a simple job for them. I had no white ring in my original lenses and new ones arrived looking horrifying. They sent it back and kept coming back worse. I opted for 1.67 instead of 1.6 and they came back even worse. I kept asking for polishing and the lab manager refused saying they look fine… when they do not! The guy is lazy especially as I found out the last time they didn’t do anything and put them back into the collection tray right after I left and dropped them off. Anyways, after 10 years of being a customer I’m leaving…

It’s just comes down to the craftsmanship of the person making the lenses.
I bought 3 pairs of glasses over the years from Costco. All 3 have the white edges. All my other eyeglasses in the past were from my actual doctor’s office, and all were great. But I went with Costco over the last 5 years because I couldn’t afford the doctors office pricing.
I was thinking of trying For Eyes or LensCrafters. Would advise against this? Should I stick with a doctors office and pay the extra money?
It’s really impossible to recommend a single store, but in general in house finish quality will be higher than those that farm out to super labs (LensCrafters won’t be any better as they’re all using essilor mega labs) it really just comes down to your tolerance for how the glasses look vs cost. I’ve got some pretty good budget options these days 🙃. Not Costco cheap but somewhere in between.

What's your opinion on a satin polish for high minus in a full frame?
Satin polish can be OK. It’s still pretty darn shiny though increasing internal reflections and thus glare. On truly high minus. Not a fan. Some like to play with shining shit and do it anyways cause it can look nice. (And yes if cosmetics and thickness is a primary concern, by all means, roll and polish a high minus, but to me that looks even worse from the front for viewers and actually looks worse than just a thick lens).
mine look yellow around the edges, what could it be?
Old lenses. That is, some materials yellow with age. They could’ve just been made but if they’re old stock either raw pucks or finished, they’ll have a more visible yellow color.
Alternatively some of the blue blocking lenses appear yellow, but generally it’s not noticed at the edges as much as just the entire lens has a very subtle yellow shift. The aged yellowing is generally more obvious.

A better optical shop that knows what they’re doing… truly the only solution. Sorry. It’s all about bevel positioning to minimize the issue.
My frames -5.5 varifocal lenses have a white edge around them in my new frames. My old glasses did not have this white edge visible, they were not varifocals just for short sight, but thinned lenses. Can anything be done about the white edge?
After the fact, no. It’s all about production and finish work.
So I’ve sent my glasses off to an independent optician who has agreed to polish the edges of the lenses. They weren’t polished before, that won’t help?

There's a difference between being snobby and taking pride in your work. Quality is subjective. I'm fine with owning a Toyota and some cool sunglasses vs a Mercedes and eating Ramen every day.

When I was finishing optical school, back in the day when glass lenses ruled the earth, I too strove to make the smallest/finest safety bevel possible. I did this to a set of glass Kalichrome yellow lenses. They. Looked. Fabulous.!
Then, I accidentally once walked into a door, and sliced my check wide open. Still have the scar.
Moral? Super fine safety bevels beware.
