I loved it how Herbie was always trying to help in the best ways possible even to an extent of keep his friend safe in the back even while it's detached
Yep. Tennessee should be Herbie's true owner not Jim even if Jim bought Herbie in the first place because he was the only one who knows Herbie is a living car and he know he listens everything so... This final part makes me happier because Herbie wanted to show Tennessee his true potential for being so loyal to him... Funny thing is Tennessee's face when Herbie's half was completely out and still running like "WTF!?" like what's happening was beyond his believing. Lol
This is the first movie I remember seeing in a theater. I still remember laughing uproariously when the back of the car passed the front. It was the most hilarious thing I'd seen in my young life up to that point.
I love how after Thorndyke sees Tennessee and Herbie's back half passes him, he tries so hard not to laugh while getting very angry and blushing at the same time.
That was probably a strategy, that Herbie though up himself. By splitting in two, he knew that one half of him would win. I believe it was Thorndike and his sidekick that put him back together at the end.
I just had an intense realization watching this for the first time in years, that this movie alone sparked every single interest of mine going forward, when I was a very young kid. Everything I hold dear to my heart was in some way, influenced by The Love Bug. It’s kinda weird when I say it out loud, but it’s a powerful feeling when you have that realization.
My mum was 7 years old when this movie came out. Her mum (my nanna) took her to the drive in theatre back in 1969 to watch it. Mum doesn’t remember much but she vaguely remembers seeing Herbie onscreen
2:35 I always laugh when I see the look on Tennessee’s face 😂😂😂😂and I love how he slowly turns his head when he realizes that he’s pulling ahead of Jim and Carol 😂😂😂
@abloogywoogywoo I think the reason Herbie split himself in two so he could get a better chance at winning the race having half in half depending if whether the half that had Jim and Carol came in first or the half that had Tennessee came in first would show that Herbie won the race.
Dallas Salmon it was done primarily back in the day when cars actually used glass in the headlight assembly. In case of a stone or a collision the tape keeps the glass in place so it doesn’t go all over the place and cause an accident. Now a day’s headlight don’t use glass as plastic is light and can be shaped into a much more aerodynamic shape compared to glass headlights back in the day.

In real life, if a car got passed the finishing line in two pieces, would it be disqualified? Peter Thorndyke gets his comeuppance and loses his Auto Car Showroom, after wagering it in the race, which he believed that he couldn't lose.
Depends on the series. Some series like F1 you could get black flagged for driving a heavily damaged car on track (altough it doesn't happen every time. Hamilton once won in Silverstone with a flat tire) one might also argue that you'd need the full chassis to complete the race distance along with the driver. If this type of incident happened IRL (it would have to happen right before the line because the car would skid to a stop quickly or slide into a tire barrier) it would probably cause a safety car or a red flag, and the stewards would have a hell of a time trying to figure out if you finished the race or not.
