Those gadgets Horace carries reminds me so much of Wacky Races. I'm sure Dick Dastardly would have loved to drive Horace. That little car's got just his kind of attitude. ;)
No. Nothing of all that is the answer: I personally found the truth to the "jet-like" noise about 7 years ago, when I was on the verge of buy a Beetle and turn it into a state-of-art replica of Horace... scrolling through the documentation about the "dynamic" Horace (they buily two of them for the '97 reboot, one for the "static" shots and the dynamic one for the "on the road" and "racing" scenes), I discovered that it had not a little gas-turbine engine mounted in the front coupled to the stock boxer - as I initially thought for the great number of small intakes on the bonnet. The story went like this:, after some tests before the filming of "Herbie vs. Horace", they found that the air-cooled engine tended to overheat as hell, since the fan was not able to pick enough air because of the aesthetic modifications on the rear. These mods were great to see, but the new three thin intakes over the engine (see the "granade attack" scene) were as cool to see as... uncooling for the engine air feeding. So they came up with coupling the stock cooling fan with an ENORMOUS (compared to the first) one right behind these 3 grills. It was alimented (of course) by a 25 Volts battery... and therefore, with such a huge cooling fan (at the time there was even a rumor that it came from a 917 for the sheer size! 😅 But as a gianormous fan of the latter, I really don't think so...) the infamous "jet / gas turbine" sound was born. They found it cool (as it is indeed) for the overall "character" of Horace, so they made it sound in post-production as rumorous as the boxer engine. But it was a very slim increase in volume, because it was for true so noisy to almost cover the 1.2 liters air-cooled Volks' engine! Hope I have been useful and to have cleared once for all the very peculiar as amazing engine sound of "The Hate Bug" Horace! 👌🏼
@erikbihari3625 Yes, you can say so. It came out well and cool for a pure casuality... as a guy born in 1997, that rapidly fell in love with classic cars - a passion inherited from my mother (that inevitabily still stands today, greater then ever) - Herbie's film are one of my first vivid memories as a little child with the original "The Love Bug" and this TV aired remake. And to be honest, the rivals' cars ended up for me to be more memorable then Herbie "himself", first with the infamous Apollo GT "Thorndike Special" and then, Horace "The Hate Bug". And to this day, that sound that tricked me from a grown up child to teenage that Horace was powered by a gas-turbine engine in the front, louder then the VW Boxer in the back (my overall idea was that Horace was twin-engined), made it cool as... Hell! (pun intended 😅). So, you can imagine my double disappointment when 1. In 2014 I found a comment of a producer of the TV-aired remake, - or one of these geniuses that created Horace - inside the IMCDb archive (IMBd but for cars in films and TV Series), in which he explained in detail that the "jet" sound was an accidental feature for the lack of cooling of the 4-cyl Boxer, and 2. So far, the #2 "Horace", the very one used for the dynamic and racing scenes, does not anymore produce that iconic jet-like sound nowadays after being quite recently restored to pristine conditions (and they didn't even bother to replicate it with a sound mod or something, so like that! It felt... like it was not Horace at all to be honest (you can find the video on YT that proves it with a little driving demo). I don't know much about Horace #1, but since it was the one for the static scenes, very little is known, but I am sure that it has only a stock VW boxer engine unmodified, since the lack of cooling problem was not a thing for it's purpose. I can prove it, since I saw a video series about a great "Herbie" meeting in the US (around Nevada or Colorado if I remember well) properly named "The Eldorado". And the propetary of Horace #1 is always shown driving slowly and never dare to push it a little like others did (like the ones with a 911 engine in the back from the 3rd film, "Herbie goes to Monte Carlo", and some others as well with a VW 1.6 boxer as well). It seemed like it's driver feared to overheat it for what I've seen. Therefore, also #1 Horace has a standard engine but no extra fan and that's why it was never shown at speed and proceeding with extreme prudence during "The Eldorado Meeting", or else it would have overheated and damaged the engine. I end my message with the conclusion that, even if was accidental, the producers soon realised that the resulting sound with that big fan was cool, and tried to enhance it a bit post-production. But this, does not mean that it was faked or exaggereted, at all 👍🏻 Whatever the case.. *ALL HAIL HORACE!* 😎✌🏻

@@sashamountainwater9322. Oh, hi pal! So, this scene of the video it's from Herbie, The Love Bug (1997), and Horace appears on it. I found on UA-cam the full movie. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/rzEiLplP4Nw/v-deo.html. Have a nice ride watching the movie, sir!
Horace unnerves me. When it comes to Herbie, he doesn’t have any facial expressions. Only on the posters, does he have eyes or any other facial features. You see how he feels through how he acts and how he sounds, or how he’s framed on camera. Horace, on the other hand, can make facial expressions. I’m not sure how he does, but I find that genuinely frightening.
It’s pretty creepy… really well done. Herbie has facial expressions in Fully Loaded but its not creepy like Horace here. I like Herbie better without the facial expressions though.
My best guess is that Horace was designed like those Disney Land animatronics. The bumper itself would likely be made out of an easy to bend combination of plastic and rubber, like some of the newer Lego capes for example. That would make it so the bumper is strong and can keep it's shape, however can easily be bent and contorted by a complex system of servos and actuators to turn it into that scowl shape. As for the headlights, behind them is most likely a track that the shutters or "eyelids" would be able to move on to create the facial expressions. The only thing I don't get is if they had the technical knowhow to do this for Horace why would they leave out that ability for Herbie until much later?
@@darencoats7835Pretty sure Horace was CGI. Also giving Herbie a face was a mistake. I don't mind if the bumper juts in and out or the headlights swivel like eyeballs, but giving him a full on face killed any sense of subtlety.
