- IGN pretty much said Demon Slayer / Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc should have been a montage because of how bad the pacing was in the 8 episodes. Regardless if you agree or disagree with their rating on the anime. I think its funny that the reviewer of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Shibuya Arc giving it a low rating for too much action did this for Demon Slayer.

IGN tends to release a lot of bad stuff these days but even a broken clock is right twice and in this case yeah. this was 8 chapters man of an arc and stretched to one whole show, this was what was suppose to be a movie or 2 part ova, the studio is shamelessly milking it at this point.

Yup, ufotable is doing wonders with demon slayer. Most of this season was anime original because the manga was inept at character development ( rengoku if that's his name). So if there gonna give the anime a 3, then dear lord if they read the manga

To be fair, the 4th season was made more for story building to get us attached to the hashira, their goals and so on for the infinity castle arc, so that what unfolds next makes it even more nerve racking.
Nope we are going to have proper backstory for everyone in infinity castle, if they cared about that then they would have improved the backstories.
Demon slayer is their golden chicken which is about to end so they are extending as much as they can for as much money they can earn

The second episode is entirely focused on Giyu and his character, which is important. Three is when the actual training starts and it feels like a sendoff for Uzui (but I guess we'll see). The fourth episode focuses on Muichiro's growth and how he's changed. It gives a little bit of breathing room. Episode five is the first time we've really seen Obanai and shows his feeling for Mitsuri (which is important later) and overall how harsh he can be. And of course Sanemi and Genya's section is crucial for next season. Six is Gyomei's training and explaining repetitive motion. Then seven is Gyomei's backstory, again crucial, the Sanemi and Giyu sparring match and Zenitsu's letter. These are all important for the next arc and their characters. And of course eight is self explanatory. It is setting things up and is crucial for these characters.

I was reading the last arc weekly and even editing the wiki lol. The general sentiment was that it felt kind of poorly paced and unsatisfying at times(with some high points). The ign score is definitely too low though

I will say, as a manga reader, I was perplexed that they dedicated an entire season to this, same with the movies. Breakup infinity castle into three movies is odd considering how that arc flowed in the manga.
It's all about the money. Because they knew that when demon Slayer made a movie version of the Infinity train arc. It made a butt load of money which is why I have gripes with the final arc of the quintessential quintuplets being made into a movie as well as the chapters that should have been in the movie for turned into ovas a year after the movie

Shows like HxH do a better job of doing training arcs without sacrificing the action and suspense that made the show interesting
It's like modern day anime/manga fans have forgotten that a rushed story is bad, but a well developed story along with a final arc that concludes the tale would be something worth reading and watching.

At some point some people realize there's no depth to breathing techniques: its just visuals. while the fights are just slash and keep slashing.
The 1 million view youtube video "Demon Slayer is Extraordinarily Incompetent" explains pretty well the huge lack of depth/substance of KnY.

Like you said, I personally enjoy the downtime moments in shows in order to enjoy the fast action even more. It feels like there is this pressure for shows to always have fancy fights or super effects or people get bored. While the Hashira training arc isn't the best in all of Demon Slayer it certainly delivered great moments and funny moments!
I think 3 was a bit too much. Given the reasons ING explained, it should have been 5 at worst. I somewhat understand their reasoning, but still

I think that you don't know what you're talking about here. You need balance. You need to do enough action with developing the story and or characters together in perfect harmony to make a good series. You just can't do one and flip the other way all willy nilly and expect people to think that it's a masterpiece

Except Rengoku that literally had the less screen time ever, he just appear to the pillar reunion and Mugen Train arc just to die after... he didn't even had much development as a character. Instead Tokito had more screen time and Tengen at least returned on the training arc and push him to have more screen time before he completely disappear until the end.

The KnY hating is honestly the craziest thing ive seen in a shonen. It is successful, popular, and people loved it for its own reasons. Once it got the success people and fans turned their backs on it and started acting high and mighty as if generic plots cant be good stories. As if they are stupid and embarrassed for liking simple plots. 90% of the time you dont watch a show for the plot you watch it for the characters, interactions, fights, whatever it may be. The plot is just at the end of what to focus on and that's why it's so successful because it hits all of those areas really well. Stop downplaying KnY it will always be a hit.
The problem is that such a mediocre product gets so much love, money and success. It is not deserving of such animation or anything else.

Just like tech companies in the pandemic ds popularity is immensely bloated and inflated and now people are seeing that ds is not that good and there better shows out there with more compelling stories and better action scenes.

Til this season we had nothing but epic fights BUT I think it's important to decompress and prepare for the final battle.
Sure, it feels odd and unusual for everything be slow with much dialogue but I know that without the buildup, there's no exciting climax.

same here. I've watched Naruto, Bleach, OP, JJK, AOT and many famous anime...But DS is still the 1 that touched me the most. Ppl just don't understand 20/80 rule, most of the anime use 80% of the time showing pointless story and "developing" characters that has nothing to do in the anime...and we have to sit through all that rubbish 80% of the time. DS is the 1st anime that I can't remove any character in it. Even Murata is important 😂. Anyway, everyone has their own taste. If anyone need review from others to enjoy what they like, that's just sad 😢

At first I didn't like s4 bc it was going to be boring but...this is the most rewatched season I've watched out of all the seasons, personally better then s3, and having the ending of s4 basically saying the end game is near is just so hype, I regretted saying s4 is boring is equally as good as all the season

It’s funny how you just ignore the actual argument instead of reading tell me where they said that more action was needed they have the same problem with jjk and demon slayer and how they have very little character depth they look at other problems but it’s mostly about character depth
The point I’m trying make is that their reasoning for giving great series’s such bad scores makes no sense. Like how is IGN gonna give Demon Slayer s4 (a series with amazing animation and good characters) a score of 3 and give Jujutsu Kaisen s2 (the series that was named “most popular animated series in the world” by Guinness World Records) a score of 6, but give Berserk 2016 (a total dumpster fire anime) a score of 7.8!? Also there’s the example where IGN literally gave the Live Action One Piece series a score of 6, because it stuck to close to the source material.
Look, Demon Slayer isn't the most remarkable of stories. It's pretty average, but the anime is so well produced and uplifts the original material so much that it elevates many moments to great. Let's be honest without such a strong adaptation by Ufotable it wouldn't be even nearly as popular. However how well an anime is produced in terms of animation and everything that comes with it is what makes anime, well anime. This arc was just an 8 episode training arc. It was non-offensive storywise, although I could definitely pick apart some scenes. But I could do that for the entire series as whole as I don't think it's well written in many ways. But a 3/10? That's way below average. Just the production alone puts it higher than that. Then you add on an non-offensive arc? Yeah, IGN is smoking something.

I actually agree with the score but not with the reasons. The season did NOT spend enough time slowing down and getting into the characters in my opinion. Some Characters had a bit more time, yet not enough, others were basically just put in as a montage. For a Training Arc I expected more focus on the training and the characters. It was way less than it should have been and the last episode that then focused more on action being the best episode just speaks for that point.
I'm not gonna acknowledge the opinion of a reviewer who can't understand Sonic's gameplay and give it bad notes cuz they're piss poor at it.

What I can say, as someone who did weekly vids on it, was that I went in going "Great! I'm gonna get to discuss Demon Slayer!" and some weeks it was like "What the heck is there to talk about here?" The episode with the paper airplanes was a good example.

This was my favorite season of demon slayer, I don’t like stereotypical shonen arcs so having an almost slice of life season was fantastic
Slow paced and anime only scenes don't exactly mean pointless filler, do I believe this arc could've been shorter and tighter, yeah, imo it's the weakest season till now but I also understand it's importance, and some of those extra scenes made the season for me and with that animation, I'm not complaining
only the last episode felt good , they lost me with the 10 minute paper airplane section
the airplane section is the only real flaw I ssw in this arc, agree that it is overplayed
I felt like this season was only there to get us to know the hashira better and failed at exactly this. After that arc, I didn't feel any closer to them than before. The arc didn't need a lot of fights, what it needed is important moments. Most of it was just useless quality time for the characters. I thought the last episode was great but it definitely doesn't save the season

Pointless filler? Filler means its non manga content, and this was manga content as well as being extremly important to show tanjiros growth to be as strong as he is and the bond between him and the hashiras as well as the ending was literally the penultimate episode of the entire show *so far* until the movies
Personally, I only watched the final episode of this season BUT THAT'S BECAUSE I've read the manga. It wasn't the best arc but I think it was a needed reprieve before the final battle. Infinity Castle is a heavy arc when it comes to intensity and climax. They can't just go on and on with seasons full of fights every single arc. They'll exhaust the audience, most especially for the final fights. The arc was needed to allow everyone to breathe (and explore the characters) before going into the big battle.

My complaint is that they have it flipped. This arc should have been a movie, the last arc should be a full season like the first season was, they are just milking money at this point.

This was the greatest lay up season. Short, explained everything they needed to leading up to Infinity Castle, and put us in the immediate vicinity of a full on action packed movie trilogy.
I have to agree with IGN. They adapted the training arc, which was like 6 chapters, into a 12 episode season.
One Piece's Dressrossa WISHES it had this pacing.

i agree. training arc was mundane with some minor character development. the humor was forced and unfunny. literally only the last episode is great. and even still, the muzan walk-in was so drawn out. like we get it, muzan is scary and has an aura or wtv but him walking into the hashira hq for 5 mins? thats insane. despite the last episode being hype and all, it is still only just a set-up for the infinity castle arc. so essentially, the whole season 4 is 88% filler and uninteresting content that can be summarized into a single episode montage. literally 5 chapters of the manga stretched into 8 episodes. but i guess they need to somehow draw it out to make it a season. super mediocre season BUT the next arc, which is the final arc, is gonna be AMAZING.

Get it right): Born into a female clan who worshipped a snake demon, who took a grave interest in the boy, ordering the clan to cut his mouth to become just like a snake. After years of isolation in his abusive clan's household, he later escaped which resulted in the Snake Demon killing all of the members and hunting down Obanai, but she was killed by Shinjuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. Only one member of Obanai's clan survived and she blamed Obanai for causing the clan's demise, leading to the boy suffering immense guilt and wishing to die to atone for his sins, joining the corps to achieve that.

@@jay-2004even with everything you said, it's only minor character development. Wow, we learn the backstories of a couple character that have been around for YEARS now. It's cool and interesting but at the same time nothing to give revelations.
I would give the season as a whole a 7/10. They stretched the arc too much with added scenes, but it had a great first episode and amazing finale. However, these three films are gonna be pure grade gas.

Hot take, but I agree. And this feeling has been going across the fanbase as well due to the extremely slow pacing. Seriously, you could skip 90% of this season and jump into the two last episodes and you would miss almost nothing.

I’m sorry but it was complete garbage. I’ve never been actively bored watching anime, and I watch a LOT of trash. As a manga reader, they added WAAAAAAY too much filler. What on EARTH was that muchiro episode lol. The paper airplanes?! My sister’s fav character is Muchiro and she said that his manga self would be embarrassed to see his anime self.
Of course, the final episode is one of the greatest episodes of all time. But that does not excuse how awful the rest of it was

To each their own ig, as a demon slayer fan I personally was glad they added filler, in fact after reading the manga I was hoping they did add filler which is why I was so glad when they added it cause it really fixed the pacing with the arc + I'm just glad to see new content being added on.
I think it gives personality to the hashira..... Tokito IS a kid.... So doing childish stuff he could never do was a great addition i think. To each their own ig. Thank you.

As a demon slayer fan I honestly skipped through this arc to the last episode. Very bland arc that don't add much, unfortunately. But the last episode really set up the hype for the last arc.
Look i hate ign plenty but even i think most of the training arc could've been 1 episode, then 1 more for stone hashira backstory, and then the final episode. The rest was kinnndaaaa drawn out, every weak i was waiting for something to happen

demon slayer as a whole is carried by animation. No character development or world building. S1 was good. Haven't really built on much since.
I think they should have made the season longer 13 ep and included the stories of fire and water and the origins sun breathing. ( Probably also include remaining backstories for Sanemi and Shinobu will a highlight of the season being a extended battle with upper 2 and Kanae)
Yes I know this would have changed the structure but let's be honest the structure of the manga wasn't that great. That would have give us about four or five more fights which all could have been really good

IGN is really shitty with its anime reviews. I knew it was a training arc, but wasn't aware that we were very close to the final battle. Though, close to the end of the fourth season, it felt like somehow- the finale or a finality of the Demon Slayer story was coming

The last season has been absolutely horrible. And I'm the biggest demon slayer fan ever but s4 was hot garbage.
Even though I’m personally not a fan of demon slayer you can kind of tell it’s a love or hate anime by watching it like even though it’s a 5/10 for me I can still understand why some give it a 9/10 or even a 10/10.
to be honest, except for the last 2 episode i did not care for this season. demon slayer plot is mid in my opinion and what makes it so good are the fight and we had none to speak of this season(except for the epicness of episode 8) so i think if the bumped it up to 5/10 they are right on the money.

Training arcs are a classic passage in Shonens.
Training arcs are the best way to have the character grow not just physically but mentally first.
Naruto has a lot of default but in most case it use perfectly training arcs to developp the character ( Rasengan, Sage mode, Even Kyubi full controle) After all those trainings, Naruto didn't just learnd a new technics, he gained a new vision on life.
For the Hashira training arc, can you tell how differrent Tanjiro is pre and post arc? Even in skills he didn't learnd much but how to focus better. 7 episodes to learn how to focus better is a little too much...
Not ever arc can have a 6 episode fight with top notch animation. This was actually a nice break from all the demon slayer action. And the last episode of this season is one of the best in the whole Demon slayer anime
Well i kind of disagree with the score on a different level, have you tryed watching season 1 along this one? it wasn't boring, it was showing from episode to episode how much characters had changed since season 1 Progression of tanjiro in training arc was step by step paralelling how he trained in first half of season 1 even tamayo and muzan apeared together in both seasons
and now we seen how much our boy has grown and muzan throws a wrench into that. yes it was a setup season, but it changed the whole cast from lower ranks to hashira everyone is now more than ever ready for a fight and muzan only now gobbles everybody up? for once we don't send tanjiro to hospital with the end of the season and that is bad and boring? i just want to see those movies soon
