Where to begin with this… It’s easily my favorite Richard Rogers tune, for one thing, and so beautifully done. Josefina Gabrielle is so STUNNING in that purple dress (especially compared those overalls she wears for the bulk of act 1). And the ballet itself does so much in exploring Laurey’s character: her loneliness, her insecurity, her love for Curly, her...whatever’s going on at 11:47 (enjoying Jud’s attention, despite being afraid of him? Enjoying the power she has over him? Not sure if either option quite fits their dynamic in this version, but it’s such a great detail!), and the guilt/shame/fear that follows. And what can I say, I’m a sucker for the showgirl outfits!
Wonderful. I was in a local NJ chorus version of this tuneful play.
