Scapa Flow Raid - Sinking of the HMS Royal Oak by U-Boat Ace Gunther Prien

- On the evening of October 13, 1939, sailors aboard the British battleship HMS Royal Oak had no reason to believe they were in danger of anything other than cold and boredom. No one suspected that lurking just below in the murky water, waiting to strike like a wolf on the hunt, was one of Germany’s deadliest U-boat aces.

Nice, Please do battle of Westerplatte 1939
Hi, could u please give us the title of the music of Grégoire Lourme ( from your generic )?
*Hears a torpedo exploding*
Duty watcher: Hmm must be the wind.
Mmmm....no. This was just a very poorly researched & presented video. One of the 1'st spread of torpedoes hit the anchor chain & due to it being a seemingly small explosion they assumed it was an explanation in the forward paid locker.
Good video. Gunther was a excellent U-Boat commander who took a risk and achieved a high reward. Good stuff and keep up the good work. 👍
Overconfidence. Bane of many commanders.
What a daring mission.
Hours on the sea floor getting depth charged. Dayyyyuuuuummmmm!
I missed your uploads man
Great video!
Great work! Hope you’re having a good day.
one of the U-boat men..in Labou..Marine-Erhenmal...
The sea was calm and the northern lights lit up the area.
This is an extremely pedantic point I confess, but American historians please note:
The prefix HMS means His(or Her) Majesty’s Ship. It does not require the word “the” in front of it. Thus we refer to HMS Royal Oak, not “the” HMS Royal Oak.
I know you’re used to referring to “the” USS Something, but it’s not the same in the Royal
Navy.
Don't know the stats so if someone could help out I'd appreciate but it feels like Britain lost more battleships in port raids than actual naval combat against Germany and Italy
If we count battlecruisers, Britain lost HMS Hood and HMS Barham in combat and HMS Royal Oak in port raids. The Italian frogmen port raid disabled HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant but they were repaired and put back into service.
@@burningphoneix Thanks, I knew I was forgetting one and it was HMS Barham
@@burningphoneix wasn’t in warfare with the Germans and Italians but we can’t forget the losses of Repulse and Wales as well. Those were devastating
Schekpe was 29 not 20 when he went down
UK knew of the channel access and had intended that week to sink another ship in blocking it

are you able to do gold beach next
next year. Along with Sword, Omaha and a study of the entire Operation Overlord plan.
normandy sword and gold beach please
Who concocted this rubbish? Prien suffered NO counterattack, in fact the RN were clueless as to the cause, until wreck examined.
Exactly! This is utter nonsense! 💯
I agree I every thing I have read says NO attack by destroyers !
Yep! Sorry. Total BS. Sure in October of 1939 in the middle of the night there was a crew on a destroyer who just sprang to attention and hit the old ASDIC unit totally prepared for ASW.
Right.
You should get the title on your cover page right if you want to be taken seriously. It's grammatically incorrect to put the article "the" before HMS - eg "The His Majesty's Ship..." Doing so just reeks of an amatuer production.
It is an amateur production. This is my hobby. Not my business.
@@ww2-epicbattles That may be so. But you are putting this out into the public sphere and as such you have a responsibility to get things right.
@@NCMA29 You're not calling the shots on me. Let me know better about my responsibilities.
@@ww2-epicbattles Frankly old boy, if you're going to put out your pseudo-documentaries for public viewing, then don't get offended when you get called out for making errors. You obviously don't know what your responsibilities are.
Best shut down comments if you're this hyper-sensitive.
@@NCMA29 and it only took your retarded ass a month to reply back 🤣🤣
This is absolutely the worst doc I've seen on this!
Where did you get your information from?
"Approximately 800 men went down with her".
833 men were killed. At-least try & get that right out of respect for them!
The 1'st spread was 3 torpedo's, 1 hit but they thought it was an explosion in the pain locker.
"The sonar was ringing in their ears".... What?? "They were chased by 2 destroyer's & depth charged non stop"....eeehh?? Who gave you this information? The only vessel they encountered on the way out was an old fishing boat, which certainly didn't depth charge them.
Please get your facts straight if you're going to publicize information.
@ 1:42 did anyone else get the distinct impression that the U-boat officer on the left is violently vomiting into his old school megaphone?? Maybe seasick but doesn't want to ruin the propaganda crew's footage?? Pretty funny
