Free Ride is a song written by Dan Hartman and performed by the The Edgar Winter Group. The single, engineered by Jim Reeves, was a top 20 U.S. hit in 1973. The song is featured in the movies Air America, Dazed and Confused, Jack Frost, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Days of Thunder and in the video games Prey and Cars. It is also used in the trailer for College Road Trip, as well as the trailer for the 2009 film The Damned United. It was covered by R&B group Tavares on their 1975 album In the City, and Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline (1995). Hartman himself covered the song later in his career. Hartman's cover as a solo artist appear in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. The song is sometimes mistakenly attributed to the Doobie Brothers, perhaps because of the similarity in its style to their works.
The 45 version is a different recording than the LP version, but both versions clock in at 3:08.
I'm glad proper credit is given to Dan Hartman. Talented, talented guy who not only wrote and sang lead on this song, but also played the bass AND the rhythm guitar part for it ...live! There's a youtube clip to prove it.
Lead vocal was originally sung by bass player Dan Hartman who went on to record big disco hits Relight My Fire and Instant Replay
and “I can dream about you” in 1984
If they ever do a Edgar Winter bio movie, I can easily see Chris Elliott playing him.
I saw Edgar on his 40th anniversary tour of "They only come out at Night" a very cold night in Peterborough Ontario, tickets sales were very poor (it's Canada they always are) Edgar and his band absolutely Kicked Ass ..I sat just above the band prob.10 feet away, and I was just in Awe I knew he was good but had no idea how good ..this is not a great representation of his voice, he might be tired or a little sick cause the night I saw him he just Rocked and his Young band was killer, they played for almost three hours, the whole album and some many more ..He didn't let up and he played everything on the stage
Never thought Winter could sing worth a damn but few possess more musical talent than this guy.
I strongly disagree regarding Edgar as a singer. To me he is one of the greatest and versatile vocalists ever with an amazing range.
note the band pumping up his vocals just like when you see Sir Paul and the band is very vocally needed and featured for sure
Love the version of Ringo's *All*Starr*Band* !!
Wow!
One dumb video ruined his career, but Billy Squier is quite talented
Piper!
My favorite Beatle did a cover of one of the best songs in the best game of all time?!
So Ringo Starr always needs another drummer. HA!
Dan Hartman..was the original singer..not even close
