This is actually surprisingly alright for a Creative product. Fewer gimmicks than usual, and actually has good internals. Good luck finding just the virtual surround decoding on anything less expensive, and that one is not a gimmick if your primary use for the amp will be gaming.
It's not a gimmick. It looks like the countless other portable dac amps out there. I am glad they didn't try to reinvent the wheel with gimmicks. That is good to see out of them.
incorrect on the gimmicks. they are not gimmicks if you use the features. i will use it for headphone out to a JBL wireless headphone base, and the optical out to my home theater.
OK I got one of these for a Christmas present by accident, my brother was supposed to buy me an E5 portable sound card to hook up to my tablet/ phone but bought me this thinking it was the same thing as an E5 but a newer upgraded version. I already own a Sound blaster Z onboard sound card. But I tried it out anyway and rigged it up via the optical lead to see what it was like. I use a set of Sennheiser HD650 headphones which are definitely quite a good set of cans. When I started to adjust the graphic equalizer using the G6 I first noticed that the decibels only go up to 8db on each frequency, but what I was mostly not impressed by, was the fact that when you adjusted each frequency, the others would flake out and become muffled slightly, the G6 couldn't handle it. My sound blaster Z is much better in this respect as when you push the decibels up on each frequency the others do not flake out and also you have far more range to play with (24db's). Obviously there are some good things, like the surround sound functions are quite good and the audio, when flat on the equalizer, is also very good. You can set it to 32 bit 324khz (Studio quality) in sound panel, but only in direct mode. So in direct mode, you don't have access to crystaliser, surround or any other functions that X-Fi utilize. I did not notice any real change in audio quality over my SB Z onboard card when in this mode though. Other good things were the RBG control on the lighting of the sound card (I like shiny stuff like that) and the simplicity of the software which has become very geared towards your hardcore gamers in some ways. I sent this back as it did not really make any improvement over my current on board SBZ, in fact its not anywhere near as good in terms of flexibility with the graphics equalizer which is kind of a big thing for me as I like to fully tailor my sound. In short, if you already have a reasonably good onboard sound card, don't bother with this, its a good external sound card but not good compared with a proper onboard.
With the Creative Sound Blaster G6 can you connect a pair of studio monitors to it? Because I want a DAC so my headphones sound better but I would also like to connect my Studio Monitors and Subwoofer to the DAC.
The problem with this thing is at its given price point... You can buy a Schitt-Stack for a little less... (Magni + Modi Combo). The only thing you are giving up is DD decoding for the most part. Budget = Xonar DGX (or DG if you still rock a regular PCI slot), Mid-Range = G5, and the High-end range is comfortably crowded with the Schitt Stack and AE-5 for less money.
@@webdigo Going by Canadian Pesos, the G6 goes for a pretty penny up here :(. Pretty much the same price. I apologize if the American prices are closer to each other.
What amp ic are you talking about that "pulls power" from one channel to drive the other? Ive never heard of such a thing and it sounds a lot like marketing wank from creative....
An amp can output a certain level of power, split between two channels for stereo. Motherboard audio runs this way. Creative uses a dual amp system, so each channel has it's own dedicated amp. They call it Xamp, although most headphone amps run this way as well. It does provide a cleaner and more consistent sound to each channel.
i bought this dac for playing FPS games and listen music on youtube...i turn off all effect but dont use "direct mode" cause i want to use my mic from this soundcard. my headsets is senh gsp 600 what settings i need to use in windows? 16bit\44000khz? now i stay with 24\44000...so...any ideas?
have it broken? I read some reviews, they said creatives products break easily. I'm using DT990 Premium 250 ohm right now. But i don't know which AMP/DAC should i buy? I have 150-160$ budget.
I have the older model and its so versatile that makes it great. Sound quality is definitely great. I have bettwr dacs and headphone amps, but they aren't portable. The imaging isn't as good as my other gear, but they are substantially more money, and for the versatility, its awesome.
Hello. Can you please tell us what it's worth to buy for games. This is my first experience of buying a sound card. He stopped on two models: Sound BlasterX G6 and Creative Sound Blaster X7 ( maybe LE version ). I need a sound card to open up the entire headphone potential in 250 ohms. In advance I will be very grateful to you for any information!
would it sync with the video capture card you demo'd earlier? I use a consair wireless headphones for gaming, in your opinion do you think this would make them better?
Did you test to make sure the sound intensity (i.e. decibels) coming through your headphones was the same out of both inputs? I have noticed when moving around to different sources with my Sennheiser headphones, that a source which is slightly quieter will seem a little more muddled than another. But if I turn the volume up a bit, it becomes "clearer". I don't know about you, but I find it extremely hard to do reliable comparisons because of this and inconsistent frequency response curves.
I didn't test output levels, but I did sweep through volume levels with both on-board and G6 outputs when listening to music. The results were consistent throughout the range.
I want to improve the overall sound quality of my setup, even tho it has a good onboard audio, i think my Asus mb got some sparkling noises from time to time. Noticeble when starting/pausing videos or Windows sounds, i think a DAC/AMP might help on that.
I have a supposedly "high end" audio dac on my mobo. Biggest upgrade I ever made was an external dac. The difference was night and day. It totally destroyed my integrated dac. I have high end headphones, amps, etc but no upgrade was more obvious than the dac. Do yourself a favor. Obviously you need some decent headphones to appreciate the upgrade.
This might be a stretch, but do you have recommendations for a sound card that uses stereo speakers? I have a couple of 2 inch full range speakers and a 2 inch 100W sub-woofer that kicks more than it should, and I'd like to wire them up to my PC.
I have an AE-5 as well, just never got around to doing a review of it. It does work very well. Very similar feature set to this, just with more I/O, and in PCIe.
See now THAT is something I wish an in depth review would be done on. How the different channels it can do and how they affect performance with headphones, how to get proper Mic use with it and what kind of mic it can power, what kind of headphone amp it has, etc. PPPLLEEEAASSEEE Consider doing a review on it.

Best audiophile systems excel in... well crispness kind off. You can hear every single frequency loud and clear, even if the volume is set rather low. Everything is just much more clearer.
I use G6 and Hd3 speakers. I tried to get a better DAC, three times the price of G6. G6 sounds better on both speakers or headphones. I have returned the other DAC.
This really ought to have been a blind A/B test. You should have a friend help you, without telling you the which device you're plugged into, and see if you can still tell a difference. It's possible that this thing might have more powerful amps than a laptop sound card's, so the loudness could be a dead giveaway, but it would be interesting to see the results without a selection bias.
It will, but not through USB. You can power the G6 with a USB power cable and connect with either a line-in or TOSLINK optical cable (which is included in the box).
Low Gain High Gain Switch is for your Output Audio not Microphone. Don't select High if your Headphones are under 100Ω You gonna blow your Headset under high volume. Beyerdynamic For life
Unless the testing is done blind and the audio levels are matched to within 0,1db, any A/B testing of audio equipment is useless and subject to bias. You're very likely to play slightly louder when using the G6 than when using the build in audio, and a difference in loudness greater than just 0,1db fools you into thinking the audio is more clear and superior. Also, confirmation bias from knowing the source will have an impact. In 2018 a DAC is a chip that, when implemented according to specs, is audibly transparent and indistinguishable from any other modern chip. Likewise; any amplifier in a portable device such as a laptop or the G6 is likely also chip based and designed specifically to drive relatively low impedance headphones like the ones you used, and when implemented and used within specified parameters is unlikely to sound different from any other. Any perceived difference in audio quality is likely to be due to bias and difference in volume.
I wonder, have you ever forgiven Creative for bankrupting with a frivolous lawsuit and then buying up the corpse of Aureal 3D and denying us all raytraced audio for 20 years now?
lol, why? first, this soundcard doesnt have bluetooth. the E5 does. use LDAC lossless high rez audio that are available on your headphones. it can easily handle flac bitrates. hopefully you are not using a cheap BT receiver.
@@BobRooney290 I am not using it wireless. I use it wired when I am gaming to get rid of the input lag. That's why I don't care about Bluetooth. I use the Sound blasterx g6 with a Audioquest golden gate aux cable.
Some big bullshit happening here on the switch test, it should not have any meaningfull difference other than higher amplification with lower distortion, seem you are using the P2 out of the switch without any mode in the audio card so.
I have the same. I got it with a 5.1 speaker set from creative and it was totally worth. With my old AKG K44 it works wonders. My friends were also impressed how good the internal mic is.
Really? I just got one and it's fucking horrible. Mic randomly disconnects. I have to unplug and replug this thing to get my mic working again. Yesterday my audio just died. Had to reinstall the drivers. Going to RMA it.
there is decent buget DAC/AMP's that go for less than $150, the thing with DAC's and AMP's is you need to ask your self if you need / want studio grade audio and if you are willing to spend studio grade money on that, or if you just need better audio and you are good with a cheaper model. either way this product is not going to give you studio grade audio, and it is also more expencive than the cheaper and equally sounding options. anything branded for "gamers" is a waste of money of there is similar product marketed for normal people.
With hardware reviews you have to know all the features of the product and comments like 'I don't know what that does i' ll have too look at the instuctions' makes me go for the off button straight away, very poor for a 'review'
You need better headphones. I have those headphones and they are good. But they drop off at about 40 hz. For 25 dollars yes. But, for an audio set up no.
Save your money and buy a DAC/AMP from a company that doesnt spend its money on gimmicks and marketing. You can get way better Fiio, sony, etc devices for the same price or lower.
But they don't come with support for microphones, which is pretty important if you play games. This is specifically targeted toward gamers. If you want great quality for a good price schiit is where it is at. :)
@@secondc0ming loads of external DACs support microphones, especially proper audio/midi interfaces. The Behringer UMC404HD I have is a professional interface and has FOUR powered microphone inputs with both 1/4" and XLR connectors.
@@Toss3 Schiit is actually... Shit. The DAC in them is very lacklustre, especially for the money. You are far better served with something else, like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo.
U doing a review of the G6 with a bunch of crappy 25 USD crappy headphones? Are u kidding me? I should do reviews... or anybody else. Get some proper studio headsets... now I wonder why I am only a fan of linus tech tipps.
well, if he can tell the difference in sound quality on a cheap set of cans, then it should be obvious, no? it was either the fiio k3 or this one. the k3 supports balanced headphones...not sure if this g6 works the same way.
Actually overpriced at $150 USD, there are better options out there, like the Yamaha AG03/06, honest to god that mixer/audio interface gets no love from the Tech Tubers and it's the best bang for your buck. Forget about this over hyped "technologies" that Sound Blaster incorporate into their products.
Shut your face you jealous dumb troll. Yamaha AG03/06 is 24 -bit 192kHz piece of ugly garbage that is WAY overpriced for the shit quality it has. The Sound Blaster G6 is much better and better value. G6 is 32-bit 384 kHz 130dB DAC. Stop being jealous and bitter, troll.
It's hilarious how companies like Astro sucker's so many people with there overpriced A40TR by saying it has surround sound, when it's the amplifier does it, you can buy the A10 and use one of these amps and you have yourself a better headset than Astro offers, though I'm buying the Zelda A10s.
All of these "gaming" soundcards are a collosal waste of money. Buy a proper Audio/MIDI interface instead. Since they're used for audio production they're crystal clear with zero gimmicky fluff. I have a Beringer UMC404HD myself, and it's even slightly cheaper than the XG6. I saw a deep analysis of the DAC on a forum (don't have the link to hand) and it's shocking how clear it is, even at the full 192KHz sample rate. Soundblasters have always been a bit shitty, especially compared to proper production interfaces.
But there are few doubts about those Behringers. Everyone says they are zero latencies products, but then there are people saying the latencies are pretty big. This machine is lot bigger than these SoundBlasters. So many connectors, it makes you feel like, oh... and where do I put my USB ? People don't usually know that the printer shaped port is also an USB port. What about gaming? Will it be compatibile, work fast? What about listening to music via computer? Is it going to work just like that or am I going to be in need of doing some more settings before Iam on the go. Those Behringers are great... Especially for recording singing, instruments, the ability to have 48V, ... I'd love to put my hands on them, but the problems I listed are the ones I believe most people are going to have and will rather choose these gaming ones.
@@MrSeifer159 I believe you heard about people, who ask if an AMD GPU is compatibile with Intel CPU and vice versa. This kind of stuff that is absolutely easy to understand. I believe that if any device does not advertise, or worse even list, the compatibility with Windows, use with games, listening to music, ... people will still go and buy X G6. Me myself, Iam going for integrated ALC 1220 with good driver implementation, when I, hopefully, will be buing a mobo. Reason is, compatibility reasons. I cant risk problems as BSOD if cable disconnects, ... or worse as Asus has with their Xonar Essence STX II with ZEN platform.

Thomas Bidstrup have you tried it out yourself? Really looking into it, but not sure if I want to pull the trigger. Want my set up louder
Awww
I wonder, have you ever forgiven Creative for bankrupting with a frivolous lawsuit and then buying up the corpse of Aureal 3D and denying us all raytraced audio for 20 years now?
I don’t understand why you were using those cheap garbage headphones. Some Sennheiser hd58X is the appropriate headphone for a dac amp like this.
The review suggests using better headphones than the ones he does. "This device won't turn a $20 set of headphones into a $200 set of headphones"
That’s actually hilarious, I just bought an hd58x and this exact DAC 😂😂😂
Glad to know I made the right choice, can’t wait for them to get here
@@AlessioKB how are they? I am thinking of buying both of em
Hard to take this guy seriously with those headphones
I will definitely get this sound card.
I am using a Sony wh1000xm2 with a AudioQuest golden gate cable.
And I am still using onboard audio xD
lol, why? first, this soundcard doesnt have bluetooth. the E5 does. use LDAC lossless high rez audio that are available on your headphones. it can easily handle flac bitrates. hopefully you are not using a cheap BT receiver.
@@BobRooney290 I am not using it wireless. I use it wired when I am gaming to get rid of the input lag. That's why I don't care about Bluetooth.
I use the Sound blasterx g6 with a Audioquest golden gate aux cable.
@@BobRooney290 When I am listening to music I use it with Bluetooth but my devices already support LDAC.
I have the G5. It was a good buy.
Jeff you ever drink na beer?
You really doesnt look like happy on what you heard..
You know why? Bec u have a $25 head phone 🙄
A final year, when i read phrase "Sound blaster" it was.... 1999. It game install menu)))
Sound cards are really underrated.
Since the 1.16 update this thing is useless for dolby 😆 returned it after an hour of using it
Creative is the only way to go when for Audiophiles.
Lol so wrong
Some big bullshit happening here on the switch test, it should not have any meaningfull difference other than higher amplification with lower distortion, seem you are using the P2 out of the switch without any mode in the audio card so.
Always liked sound blaster, instead of buying gaming headphones i got an external sound blaster Omni 5.1 and a 50$ headset, best purchase of my life
I have the same.
Do Sound Blasters work with headphones only or you can use them to have a better sound quality through your PC external speakers?
there is decent buget DAC/AMP's that go for less than $150,
the thing with DAC's and AMP's is you need to ask your self if you need / want studio grade audio and if you are willing to spend studio grade money on that,
or if you just need better audio and you are good with a cheaper model.
either way this product is not going to give you studio grade audio, and it is also more expencive than the cheaper and equally sounding options.
anything branded for "gamers" is a waste of money of there is similar product marketed for normal people.
So you have tried this? What are better options for headphones/headset for the same/lower price?
Yea i get you...but have fun finding a good dac/amp for consoles
With hardware reviews you have to know all the features of the product and comments like 'I don't know what that does i' ll have too look at the instuctions' makes me go for the off button straight away, very poor for a 'review'
No 32bit PS4, :((( DAC Cirrus logic No nice sound, X7 very nice sound Burr-brown (sabre nice sound) G5/G6 :/
You need better headphones. I have those headphones and they are good. But they drop off at about 40 hz. For 25 dollars yes. But, for an audio set up no.
Just please forget this annoying background music.
Tried them and regret buying them
Jeez,get some decent headphones!
For future please read the manual as a minimum to review anything. Some facts presented are categorically incorrect.
Save your money and buy a DAC/AMP from a company that doesnt spend its money on gimmicks and marketing. You can get way better Fiio, sony, etc devices for the same price or lower.
To be honest the Soundblaster E1 is just as good and also includes mic in and is only $40/£30
But they don't come with support for microphones, which is pretty important if you play games. This is specifically targeted toward gamers. If you want great quality for a good price schiit is where it is at. :)
Exactly Toss3, that's why I went with the Soundblaster E1 over the Fiio ua-cam.com/video/saqkIoziMEg/v-deo.html
How can you trust the opinion of somebody with such a ridicolous impractical knife?
God damn borderlands looks bad .)
Audio bottlenecked
Yeah, that G6 really hinders his headphones xD
@@krakenader What about the basic Schiit stack ? :)
@@krakenader Yeah that's what I wanted to hear :) I'm waiting for Asus Rog Crosshair VIII (x570) or similar mobo, I like that I won't lose 1Go ram because of this dac too. Thanks for your wisdom :) Are you waiting for Navi and Ryzen 2 to hit the stores too ? :D
@@MrSeifer159 Well. I mainly aim to finish my Bachelors degree. Then it will depend if I will go and move from my FM2+ platform to Zen2 - but yes Iam excited for R5 3600X, but I am interested in B450/B550 - something sort of MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC - or if will realise that no I still dont have any spare time and stay with my notebook. I dont consider any GPU upgrade tho, my GTX 660 is enough for games that I play: Witcher 3, Kingdom Come.
