What makes this song so poignant is that in 1977 there were no cell phones, no texting, no messages and many people didn't even have home answering machines, I know I didn't have have one until 1989. Nothing is as lonely as calling a number of someone you're missing and listening to it ring and ring. This song always hits me in the heart.
You nailed it. Kids today have no idea what it meant to be so out of touch when your heart was breaking and there was only a ringtone. Awesome that the song still holds up even though the kids can't really relate. The genius of Jeff.
@@robotto8858 This will age me, but I can remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of wine, broken heart, using my princess phone with the extra long cord, calling over and over and 'noone answering, I'll just let it ring a little longer...."
I've been a die-hard Electric Light Orchestra fan since I first heard them in the mid 70's. Yet, I don't understand why this track gets all of the attention. It's a great track, but it's not the only one...not by a long shot. I think too many of these requests are made by people who've only heard one or two songs on the radio.
I remember the days when you only had a landline phone. No call waiting No answering machine so if you missed a call… you didn’t even know it. Oh yes, and a live telephone operator on the line. ❤
Yes, Jeff Lynne is a genius. I grew up listening to ELO and they have always been one of my favorites. I would give you some suggestions, but they have sooooo many great hits, I'll just let you pick. You can't go wrong with any of them.
When you wanted to call long distance you dialed 0 and asked an operator to dial the number. The intro tones replicate what you would hear when she dialed. You would start paying as soon as the other party picked up so there was a limit to the # of times she let it ring. Always such a tense time hoping they pick up
Geoff Lynn is a contemporary of the Beatles and knew them when he was in The Move in the 60’s. He was also a close personal friend of George Harrison and played with him on the Travelling Wilburys
Fun trivia: when Jeff's first single was released in 1967, a sad (but also a bit funny in retrospect) thing happened. This is the story as quoted by the Jeff Lynne Song Database: "So in the Idle Race, we finally got a record deal. So I wrote this song called Imposters of Life's Magazine. And I can't wait for this thing to arrive in the mail, this record that I've made. And it's going to have me name on the label. I'm going, 'Oh, I'm going to be a songwriter.' The thing comes and I look at it and I go, 'What the hell is that!?' And it says 'Imposters of Life's Magazine by G. Lynn,' without the e on the end, just l-y-n-n And 'G.'? I thought, 'who's that? Gordon?' You know, I don't know any G. Lynn around here. So I was very, very disappointed, very upset 'cause it was really me big moment and it just turned to shit. [Laughs]" Jeff Lynne (Summer 2012 - Mr Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne and ELO documentary) So I think Jeff would be just slightly miffed about being called "Geoff"... ;-)
Oh, btw Jeff joined the Move in 1970, so barely in the 1960es... (but you must know that already? ;-) ) Before that, he was in the Andicaps (the name changed a few times) which he formed with some friends in 1963 (!), and then went to the Chads, and in 66 he joined the Nightriders, which then became the Idle Race. His career thus started a lot earlier than many people seem to think.
I was a teen when this can out in 19977. This was absolutely everwhere on the airwaves. A very, very huge hit! Everbody had the 45rpm of this song. Do Ya on that album is also great
Another masterpiece by ELO! JEFF LYNNE, the master of composition, orchestration and application to the rock genre of the "wall sound" technique (also called "full sound") imported from classical symphonic music.
In the summer of 77 I was in 9th grade and this was the album of the summer. My friends and I played it constantly and I still listen to it frequently today. The memories that those songs bring back. Check out the live at Wembley stadium version of this. I watch it when I need a pick me up because the audience is AMAZING!.
I have to admit that I giggled just a tiny bit when you said it was a vintage telephone sound. That simply was the telephone sound when the song was recorded.
The song is about re-connecting with a lost love. Hello, How are you? Are you still the same? He misses the love they shared and he's hoping she will pick up the phone and reciprocate his longing. He's stuck in twilight. If you would only pick-up that telephone. Of course, she doesn't pick up. His only choice is to let it ring evermore meaning he will never give up trying to reconnect. It's a masterpiece. For those of us that grew up with that ring and that anticipation of connecting, it's simply amazing.
Just took my 21 year old son to the 10/29/2024 show in AZ. They are able to reproduce the Studio sound live. One of the best shows I have ever seen. 76 years old and he still has it!
Absolutely! The concert is great not only because of the band but the fans as well. There is such a mix of young and old. Everybody is engaged. Nobody staring at their phones.
Someone once asked George Harrison what he thought the Beatles would have sounded like if they'd stayed together through the 70'S and into the 80's. He said ELO. George and Jeff Lynn were good friends. They were in the band The Traveling Wilburies together.
You should watch them do this live as they sound as good live (if not better) asthey do in the studio version. You get to see the audience in the concert all up singing and dancing. All of their songs are great and my favourite is 'All Over The World' which is such a happy song. Jeff Lynne (who is from my home City of Birmingham, UK) was a fantastic musician and producer.
The magician Jeff Lynne! He produced Tom Petty's debut solo album, Full Moon Fever & he & George Harrison produced the Travelling Wilburys. ELO is Excellent music on so many levels. ❤️✌️
This is the song that made me fall in love with ELO as a kid in the 1970's. Pure magic! My other favorite is "Can't Get It Out Of My Head". Personally, I say listen to the studio version every time with ELO. As good as some of the live clips are that people recommend, they simply cannot duplicate some of the things that made these songs so special.
just saw Elo/Jeff Lynne a few weeks ago. Still got it. Great concert. So glad you listened to this studio version. Elo, Boston, Supertramp are so rich in production and you of ALL people would appreciate that I'd think.
So I spent probably from the late 70’s through 99 going to approximately 12 or 13 concerts a year with my buddies all over the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut (and Massachusetts) areas. Then I moved to Nashville and have worked in the music industry for 25 years now. I’ve been to more shows pretty much than anybody I know (that doesn’t work in the industry). That said, bucket list has always had ELO on it, and about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I finally got to see Jeff Lynn’s ELO. I’m here to say, 2 songs in and my mind was made up. They were instantly in my Top 3 shows Ever! “Telephone Line” was one of my favorite parts of the show, but there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the show! Best audio ever.
I hope you see this comment because this song was my mom's very favorite song she would always play it over and over and over again because she loved it so much she passed away November 25th 1991 she was only 30 years old in a car accident her name was Patricia Arlene Elhe and I am her son her only son I was 4 days after my 7th birthday when she passed and this was her absolute favorite song and it is the song that makes me think of her every time and I think you so much for keeping the song alive not a day goes by that I don't think of my mother it's bringing me to tears saying this comment right now but I hope you see this and no that this means a lot to me and to my mother I thank you and I thank you for keeping this song alive because my mom's spirit is in this song it is in me thank you
Thank you so much for sharing and I am so sorry for your loss! Music has a way of connecting with us and I am glad this song resonated with you today! Hang in there and keep pushing and I appreciate you hanging out! 🙏🏻❤️
Great to see you digging ELO and enjoying Jeff Lynne's studio mastery. I've been listening to them literally since decades. I would suggest to not miss the final track off A New World Record called Shangri-La with one of the most stunning outros of all time. Cheers from Deutschland (Germany).
Thanks, Seton! You are way too young to remember the sound of telephones back in the day.. and also.. no "answering machines"... this may be the first radio hit I heard by ELO back when I was a teenager.. Jeff is, indeed, genius... when you have time & inclination, you should see a live performance of this... appreciate your appreciation!
Y e s, great band. I did read or saw an interview that one of the Beatles said ELO continued that sound Beatles had when they broke up. I remember you had mentioned the Veatke sound. You were spot on.
You really should do the combo of El Dorado (overture) and Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. Just don’t do the supposed live video. It’s not and they cut the overture short. Trust me on this, do the studio and make sure you do them right into each other. It’s not that much longer doing them both, but well worth it. I promise you’ll love it. Jeff is a huge Beatles fan so a lot of their songs give that vibe. They have so many great tunes you’ll get into since you opened this rabbit hole. Jeff definitely used the studio as an instrument.
ELO is one of my all time favourite bands. Hit after hit!! I still have a couple of their albums; they were on heavy rotation when I was a teenager and I love listening to them to this day. I appreciate your reactions, I like when you include your musical knowledge into your reactions, when you draw attention to certain musical / instrumental things it allows me to focus in on it and learn something.
They make the same effects in live concert as well. Anything from 2017 Wembley Stadium concert is fire! Jeff Lynne is very careful to do live music as close to the studio version. While the members of the band have changed, Jeff is also very careful to choose the best musical talent.
I love ELO! I grew up with their tunes and my sister saw them live in the late 70's! I was so jealous! I was a little too young to tag along. I had their "Discovery" album and they are one of the most incredibly gifted bands ever. Jeff Lynne is a genius, no doubt. I love the Zoom Tour concert video here on YT and one of my fav songs on that video is "One Summer Dream", it's just so phenomenal. That whole concert footage is just PHENOMENAL and a must see! Thanks Seton Hills Studios!
"Concerto for a rainy" day is highly recommended. It is ON the "into the blue" album, 4 Songs or better masterpieces where the last one is " mr bluesky" (btw: it was in the OST of 'guardians of the Galaxy 1'). So many good music to experience Not only from ELO....
And yes, I believe John Lennon really liked this band and respected Jeff Lynn, and said if the Beatles had kept going they would have gone in the direction of ELO
Just saw them on the over and out tour!!! I've seen hundreds of concerts, this was by far the BEST show ever. A top notch band playing ALL of their hits in an hour and a half! Add in the laser show and awesome sound mix, made it an unbelievable show! There are tons of videos here on youtube, watch one song if not the whole show! You'll see what I mean. This was a bucket list show for me, I live in Akron, Ohio and missed them in Cleveland. Found next closest show and drove to Detroit to see it, best decision ever! I have seen Pink Floyd, Eagles etc...and this one topped the chart! ✌🎶🎸🎶
This is from their 6th album, A New World Record from 1976. It's my favorite album of theirs and I've been a huge fan since this album came out. This was when they reached perfection. Everything on the album is top tier. I would recommend listening to Tightrope from this same album. It will blow you away.
Once when asked To john lennon where he saw the future of the beatles if they hadn't broken up. And he said, Look at e l o. They're doing what we would have done
So good to "connect" with this genius song. I love how you appreciated it. Please consider watching the Live versioin from Wembley. I am like you. I can't hear this song enough. ❤❤❤
They are amazing aren't they? Jeff Lynne doesn't get nearly the accolades he deserves. The way they can perfectly replicate this sound live too, is crazy, well you've seen them at Wembley. You gotta check out 'Don't Bring Me Down', if you don't already know it, talk about bangers. Thanks for this, just what I needed. ✌❤
Everything Jeff Lynne Touched Is Gold He Produced Albums For George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Steve Winwood in Addition To All ELO Albums. He Is Often Referred to As the 5th Beatle
This song was from their 6t studio album, "A New World Record." It had several epic tracks. "Livin' Thing" "Do Ya" and other chart toppers. Their next album, "Out Of Blue The Blue" is a monumental two disk masterpiece. Notable songs "Turn To Stone" "Sweet Talking Woman" to name just two. Side 3 is the four track "Concerto For A Rainy Day" which is 18:52 of goosebumps, culminating in "Mr. Blue Sky." Pure fkn genius. Enjoy the ELO rabbit hole. It's massive. 🤘😎❤

Such a banger!! I cannot wait to hear more from ELO!!
Try a little Motorhead. Stay Clean is one of their many great songs. I have sure you have seen many a Motorhead shirt.
What makes this song so poignant is that in 1977 there were no cell phones, no texting, no messages and many people didn't even have home answering machines, I know I didn't have have one until 1989. Spot on my friend.
You nailed it. Kids today have no idea what it meant to be so out of touch when your heart was breaking and there was only a ringtone. Awesome that the song still holds up even though the kids can't really relate. The genius of Jeff.
The whole album needs to be heard in one sitting. It was the song of my first love.
@@robotto8858 This will age me, but I can remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of wine, broken heart, using my princess phone with the extra long cord, calling over and over and 'noone answering, I'll just let it ring a little longer...."
I’m so glad you reacted to this song the whole album is a masterpiece Shangri La is an epic song from this album.

I second that, one should know all of ELO, the whole catalog.
ELO is incredible, watch it live in Wembley Stadium in London 2017!
Yep!!!!!! The live concert version sounds the same! Amazing band!
Yes definitely it’s fab ❤ x
Definitely worth you checking out the live Wembley stadium performance, it's amazing
This is my favourite ELO song. The studio version is great, but I love the live version at Wembley more
Yes it’s excellent!!!
I remember the days when you only had a landline phone.
No call waiting
No answering machine so if you missed a call… you didn’t even know it.
Oh yes, and a live telephone operator on the line. ❤
Having lived through those days ELO was a breath of fresh air. They were "different" and yes Jeff Lynne is a genius.
Don’t be shocked. It’s ELO.
Every song on this album is fire.
This song has been described as the song the Beatles never wrote.
If you watch this live at Wembley, you will see how much this song means to the audience - love watching their reactions.
One of my all time favourites .❤️
There were several bands that ruled the 70s ELO held their own against all of them.
This is why ELO was huge in the 70's.
The whole record is a masterpiece try the mission of the sacred heart
Jeff Lynne, described as the 5th Beatle!

TRUST ME on this MUST HEAR classic my music lovin' brother,, Electric Light Orchestra "Tightrope" (Studio Version).🔥

Even though we had to wait an extra week to see them in Phoenix it was well worth the wait to see ELOs concert in the USA.
Yes! Took my dad to see him in Atlanta in October. I was amazed how great he still sounds.
Live at Wembley is just as amazing or better! It is audibly and visually stunning!
Absolutely! The concert is great not only because of the band but the fans as well. There is such a mix of young and old. Everybody is engaged. Nobody staring at their phones.
Jeff Lynne is the GOAT...does it all!
Love ELO, everything they do is brilliant
Nice one,Steve. Keep going with ELO,bro--- plenty of great material from Jeff & Co. Cheers, T

Sweet Talking Woman, Hold On Tight, Rockaria and Rock 'n' Roll Is King are all great ELO songs
This is a great song. The live performance with all their lights is just as good, if not better.
Very intuitive... Jeff Lynn has often been referred to as the fifth Beatle, because of their similar vocal style
Great to see you digging ELO and enjoying Jeff Lynne's studio mastery. I've been listening to them literally since decades. I would suggest to not miss the final track off A New World Record called Shangri-La with one of the most stunning outros of all time. Cheers from Deutschland (Germany).

Check out the DVD for Jeff Lynne's ELO Wembley Or Bust 2017, an amazing concert
"Concerto for a rainy" day is highly recommended. It is ON the "into the blue" album, 4 Songs or better masterpieces where the last one is " mr bluesky" (btw: it was in the OST of 'guardians of the Galaxy 1').
So many good music to experience Not only from ELO....
And yes, I believe John Lennon really liked this band and respected Jeff Lynn, and said if the Beatles had kept going they would have gone in the direction of ELO
The opening beeps and werbles, up to 'Hello' is my ring tone! Stunning, all of them.
Livin' Thing @Wimbly
Great strings.
This is my favorite ELO song.
"Let it ring forevermore" was a feeling I could relate to at the time.
Nooooooooo video of him at Wimberley is so unbelievably good!!! It sounds EXACTLY the same in concert at Wembley.
You can always tell a Jeff Lynne produced song by the snare drum sound, its like a fingerprint
I bought this album when it first came out... still have it today... (yeah I'm that old) and still rocking.😎
The live version from the Wembley Stadium performance is amazing! You may want to check that out.
2017 , Live Wembley, wanna know how a song speaks to generations, watch the crowd. ❤
Just saw them on the over and out tour!!! I've seen hundreds of concerts, this was by far the BEST show ever. A top notch band playing ALL of their hits in an hour and a half! You have GOT TO WATCH XANADU, with Olivia Newton-John!!! Jeff Lynne wrote all the music!!!
This is from their 6th album, A New World Record from 1976. It's my favorite album of theirs and I've been a huge fan since this album came out. This was when they reached perfection. Everything on the album is top tier. I would recommend listening to Tightrope from this same album. It will blow you away.
My older brother's friend took me to see them in 1976. 😆 I'm old!
I was 12. Lucky girl!!!! ❤️✌️
Great stuff to review - ELO has some of my favorites. 2 other great tracks on this album are 'Mission' and 'Tightrope'.

Glad you did this one. This is my all time favorite ELO song.
The whole album A New World Record is brilliant.
Gotta do ELO live @ Wembley 2017 😎👍
These guys had such a string of amazing hits. Their sound is incredible.
A great recording will give you goosebumps. This one does it.
Thanks for an interesting, entertaining and informative reaction. ELO ...Jeff Lynne....your right Genius..Has been referred to as "The Fifth Beatle"
ELO is a very deep and satisfying rabbit hole. Keep digging you won’t be disappointed.
Agree that Jeff Lynne is an absolute musical genius.
One of the greatest bands ever!!!! Some many top shelf tunes. It's Electric Light Orchestra ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍🤘🤘. Rock and Roll!

"All Over the World", "Hold on Tight", "Roll Over Beethoven"
i love them! i still have albums from them!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So good!! Thanks for watching! 😁
We saw ELO a few years ago and Dhani Harrison(George Harrison 's son) was there playing with Jeff Lynne's band.. it was an incredible show!
Superb album
Luv your reactions, so cool and insightful!
Really appreciate it! 😁
ELO was inspired by The Beatles. Jeff Lynne produced George Harrison's albums at least some of them. See the travelling Wilburys.
This is one of my all-time favorite ELO songs
Watch this song live at Wembley 2017. It's an unforgettable true spectacle!
ELO is EPIC!
So good to "connect" with this genius song. I love how you appreciated it. Please consider watching the Live versioin from Wembley. I am like you. I can't hear this song enough. ❤❤❤
Shangri-La. Shangri-La. Shangri-La.
NOW you've gone and done it! You have a new huge rabbit hole!
BINGO!!!! They were totally and honestly inspired and influenced by the Beatles! ❤❤❤✌️❤️❤️
Btw, brilliant reaction! What a great way to start my day.
gd ole elo, magical track frm v mid 70s, jeff did vis a cple yrs ago at wemberley concert, worth hearing, whole concert was quality actually.
Everything Jeff Lynne Touched Is Gold He Produced Albums For George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Steve Winwood in Addition To All ELO Albums. He Is Often Referred to As the 5th Beatle
Great song and reaction
This song was from their 6t studio album, "A New World Record." It had several epic tracks. "Livin' Thing" "Do Ya" and other chart toppers. Their next album, "Out Of Blue The Blue" is a monumental two disk masterpiece. Notable songs "Turn To Stone" "Sweet Talking Woman" to name just two. Side 3 is the four track "Concerto For A Rainy Day" which is 18:52 of goosebumps, culminating in "Mr. Blue Sky." Pure fkn genius. Enjoy the ELO rabbit hole. It's massive. 🤘😎❤
