    Your lessons are incredibly thorough and I love watching them for the details, here for example, the need to not straighten the arm when doing a lifesaver. I went out for my first ride on my new Moto Guzzi yesterday after passing my Mod 2, 3 weeks ago, and will continue to watch you videos…I feel my “real” learning is just beginning. M

    I've just stumbled across your channel, and I really like the way you teach. I've been on L plates for a few months and now look forward to applying a lot of what I've learnt watching a number of your videos. Very helpful tips, explanations of the basics, and importance of the highway code.

    Hi - it's really interesting to hear what you said at around 12:45 about the new highway code rules. Your interpretation makes complete sense to me, but Ashley Neal asked the DVLA (I think) about it who said that exits to roundabouts are junctions and so the rule would apply there. I'm guessing the difference is between the intention of the rule (your interpretation) and the literal interpretation (Ashley's), but I find it horrifying that there hasn't been better communications about it.

    • @Grahamvfr
      @Grahamvfr 2 роки тому +2

      You're correct, the dvsa do count roundabout as junctions. Such a stupid change to the HC, as a pedestrian I now feel more vunerable as I'm half expected drivers to stop, and as a driver I'm half expecting pedestrians to start crossing. It's often a stand off. Silly rule badly thought out, giving pedestrian priority (and we all are pedestrians) does not make it safer, it simply make their journey quicker by not having to wait..... Theoretically.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  2 роки тому +5

      Hmmm this is an interesting one. If you read the highway code in detail it quite clearly makes a differentiation between junctions and roundabouts which are treated as separate entities with distinct instructions regards how to treat pedestrians. Regardless of who has said what and their level of authority, the highway code wording is clear enough that at junctions (it only shows pictures of side road junctions, not roundabouts), we should "give way to pedestrians". It is also very clear that at roundabouts we should "watch out for" pedestrians. At no point do the two distinct entries in the highway code overlap. I am aware that the conversation between Mr Neal and "somebody" at the DVSA mentions the dictionary definition of a junction which then leads on to the assumption that they will consider a roundabout to be a junction. So does that mean at every busy junction with traffic lights or a slip road (which would also qualify as a junction according to that interpretation of the word) we should be giving way to pedestrians? There is too much "interpretation" in that assumption. Reading the highway code exactly as it is written, junctions and roundabouts are distinct and separate entities with their own advice regards pedestrians. Either way of course, we should not be running over pedestrians nor stopping if it is not safe to do so, especially from a motorcyclist's, rather than a car or larger vehicle's point of view for safety. Just because someone in a supposed position of authority has reportedly confirmed what someone else believes to be true, does not make it a fact. I'll leave you all to do your own fact finding and to interpet the highway code how you so wish. Thank you as always for your comments 😊

      @@motorcyclelessonsuk hi leanne thank you for your reply.
      Its in the dvsa despatch blog, I've just read it again.
      If you go into dvsa despatch, regarding changes to HC, in the comments section, there is a question from David Yan (if you scroll) on roundabouts. The answer from Peter (dvsa) was clear that roundabouts are junctions (madness I know).
      You will also notice that on test reports dl25
      (for cars) no mention is made of roundabouts only.
      junctions, suggesting the same 😕😕

      @motorcyclelessonsuk  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Graham,
      "Peter" may well be saying this is the case but is it fact? The highway code is quite clearly separated regardless of where it is marked on the DVSA's documentation for tests. In a point of law which would be upheld and referenced as fact? Despatch blog or highway code? Unless it is clearly specified in the actual "rule book" (Highway code), there is still a point of contention between DVSA comments and factual information.

      @foddy0 2 роки тому +2

      @@motorcyclelessonsuk Thanks for your detailed reply! I agree with everything you've said and believe this really was the intention of the rule, but wish it was more clear. Given the two very different interpretations from two professional instructors, it's understandable that the average driver/rider will have varying views, and may just give way "in case". Hopefully it's something which will be clarified in the next version of the HC.

    Me again, sorry lol. Yes a bit quick into junctions, notably 9:14 the right turn into a one-way street. Nothing personal here but rider2 (Nick) took it wide like it was a two-way street thus proving he didn't allow himself time to notice it was a one-way street and could have safely cut the corner like you did. Also in the same street at the end junction it looked like he did a mirror check at 10:01 but no other mirror/shoulder check when he pulled out at 10:09, do you think he should have dropped a left shoulder check before pulling out? 8 secs is a long time out on the road :) Anyway we all make errors and a big well done to both riders on passing their test :) Oh just one more thing before I go at 13:17 it looked like Nick pulled a bottle of orange juice out of his backside, neat trick Nick lol

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  2 роки тому +3

      Hello again 👋,
      OK so at 9.14 the right turn into the one way street is actually very poorly marked on the road, such that the gap in the red hatched markings is so far forward of the junction I usually warn students to stop or turn at the end of the red tarmac or they will run wide. It's a pain! So it may have looked like poor planning but it was more likely reading the road markings as they actually are laid out. That said, I do suggest they look at the road they are turning into to help them plan positioning on the approach.
      Yes, Nick should have considered at least a left s/c before moving forward into position at the junction, though we can never be sure they haven't been avidly looking in the mirrors whilst stationary without moving their heads 😉 (I suspect not, but always worth considering)
      And finally.... Nick is the best magician I've seen on a lesson yet 😉😂
      Thanks again 😊👍

    I noticed in the latter part of the video that at least one of the riders was not dong livesavers when turning left into a side road. Also, not clear that he was checking his mirrors to us youtube viewers. Should a livesaver have been done on those particular left turns?

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  2 роки тому +2

      Hello, thanks for your comments. It is not compulsory to do lifesavers when turning left into a side road. If the student is in position 1 it is unlikely a lifesaver is necessary especially if they have not stopped as it it highly unlikely something would be in the blind spot. If turning left from position 2 thus turning across position 1, or the student has been stopped for a period of time such that something could sneak into the blind spot whilst mirrors are not being checked then we recommend a lifesaver prior to turning. I hope that helps. Thanks again, 😊

    • @eldee1628
      @eldee1628 2 роки тому

      @@motorcyclelessonsuk So besides lifesavers when turning right, where else should we be doing them, and can we fail if we don't do them under certain circumstances and what are those, please?

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  Рік тому

      @@eldee1628 Hi, apologies, new comments on longer threads don't come up in my notifications. Lifesavers are considered compulsory just before you turn right into a side road in case you are being overtaken. You will get a fault if you don't do one unless there is a significant danger to you, in which case you will fail. Changing lanes also requires a lifesaver to check the blind spot. A lifesaver just before you exit a roundabout is considered sensible but not compulsory unless again there is significant danger and you did not check it was safe (so it's sensible to do one to the correct direction). Hope that helps 😊
