12:02 "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” - Mark Twain.
No it's not. Lol.
Mark Twain obviously hasn't been to St. Louis
Pee Wee Herman could've told you the Alama isn't bike friendly. And it doesn't have a basement.
This might be the funniest way things could’ve fallen apart
very on brand
Thank you so much for taking time to take a photo with me. Thank you so much for being such an inspiration and for being so chill. You are welcome in SA anytime. You can ride my bikes too. Peace.
This was one of the best videos on this channel. The racing strategy made the result completely understandable, but I like how you went out of your way to explain the skills of those around you. It’s a shame you had to win, but sometimes in life, bad things happen to good people.
The city has been working on building out the bike path network, and eventually you'll be able to do a loop of the city (currently you can do an out-and-back of about 76 miles). That said, you're spot on with your observations. They're not the best for commuting, bunch rides or for cruising above like 17,18 mph. Still, it's better than nothing and it's nice to have that much trail without having to worry about cars.
imagine phil cussing you out for taking a lane while he blows by you in a ferrari. 😂
"he pulled me for 1hr and then I beat him on the climb.." 😂
Great video. Loved the part about traveling and meeting the many most excellent people in all locations and not lumping everyone into a hatful bunch. Well said.
I remember the Alamo because Ozzy Osbourne pissed on it in '82
If you are a tourist, make sure you ask about the basement of the Alamo.
I googled it, looks like there actually is one now!
@@Daniel-ng8fi Just in the nearby gift ship. not the Alamo, itself.
A Classic Banger from Phil
It was awesome to meet you and take a quick pic with u and have u here for the race..it was my first ever race I did decent and I was able to meet you..not bad..Cheers!..💯👍🏼
Phil "draft sucking" for over an hour and then dropping that poor guy on a climb... Damn, I feel bad for that chap - true hero!
Yo Phil, we still good btw :)
This was you??
You said "Damn, I feel bad for that chap - true hero!"
That's bike racing, for good or ill.
To be fair very few would beat Phil uphill even if Phil had been doing the bulk of the front
Major props for knowing your fate and burying yourself anyway 💪
I was in that race. You guys left us in the dust and we were going pretty fast. You got 21st overall. Good times. Its hard to train for that race where I live. Zero hills. And just to let you know the wind was not that bad. Usually the wind its in the 15 to 20 miles and hour during that race. Ask the guys that did it last year.
@gandul1234 I was also in the race. Phil definitely won. The results app couldn’t be altered to reflect taking the finish times at the top of the second KOM pass, so they still show times at the finish line. But for the race result on the day, you need to use the time at “KOM2 FINISH”
Aye.....he won the race mate. Check your facts.
Great video Phil!! It was a great event!! I had hoped to meet you!! But we never crossed paths!! Wanted to have a pic with you and my custom Trek with a full Invis kit!! Maybe next time!! Love your videos!!
I was a slow 60-mile rider, so the 100-milers caught up to me. I can attest to Phil and Freddy being WAY ahead. They passed me, and so I moved over to let the next pack (that I knew would shortly be behind them) pass me easily . . . and I waited, and I waited, and I waited. ;-)
Lived (and biked) about 3 blocks from the Alamo for a bit. I loved riding around the King William neighborhood. Even made my own little crit course
I really appreciate seeing this, Phil. I was in the race and when I finished, I was kind of confused that you won. My immediate thoughts were, “Phil was signing autographs and posing with the Ferrari yesterday, why would he be trying to win?” I guess this answers it.
Also, how the heck do you finish a race like without stopping for water when support is forbidden in the rules? I was what I’m guessing was group 2 (in terms of large groups) halfway through, but had to drop off to refill bottles. I don’t think I reasonably could’ve carried that much liquid with me the whole day, and that was for a day that was mild and overcast!
You don't know? Its historically important as it was in Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Hey Phil - Next year, you should come a week early and hit some gravel at the Castell Grind! We’d love to have you 🙂
(This year there was a scheduling overlap with Le Tape due to the eclipse)
That’s a good point. We ride the windy back roads in my county, and that’s where I find the most courteous drivers in custom vintage cars or sports cars. They also enjoy the challenge of the road. Sometimes too much in the case of motorcycles on GMR.
I always feel like I'm one with the motorcycles as far as cars trying to kill us, but that seems to be one way in my experience getting harassed by motos
my favorite narration style!
Very interesting how team tactics play out sometimes. Great ride as usual Phil
I love that you both had a recorded quote for the situation; and did exactly what you told them to do.
I was editing the pre-race meeting and couldn't believe it was that dead-on. The common mistakes of bike racing are sort of predictable I guess. Not enough to predict how this race would go, but oh well
Bro- you still like to race! Take the W and enjoy.
Before I got into cycling, I raced collegiate offshore sailing, then later as paid racing crew for billionaire businessmen. The best I can describe the experience is like standing under a cold shower in your clothes, tearing someone else’s $100 bills in half as fast as you can. A+, but would not recommend to the casual observer.
"Half a million dollar car and the seats are manual" 🤣
Outstanding!
Excellent presentation. Thank you. Interesting how many in the video recently moved from CA to TX.
I'll never meet Phil but he's super cool and a great sense of humour, love the vids ✌️
Phil Gaimon, former pro, KOM GURU and historian "and how did that go for them?" Spit my wine out laughing.
Fab Phil, more races please!
I’m glad that you had such a great time down there!
I was born and lived in Upstate New York until 1972, then lived in San Antonio until about fifteenth years ago. When I lived there, we used to say that San Antonio was a little hick town of one and a half million people.
The problems (“I hate California” guy) are the same in many US cities and towns however. Some people don’t travel, and whenever those particular individuals do, they don’t take the time to learn about different regions, customs, or lifestyles. They willfully remain ignorant and narrow-minded. Regurgitating the misinformation and propaganda spouted by their favorite political entertainment channel, rather than opening their minds and hearts to different people, places, and ideas.
Glad you had a great time in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country.
There are no mountains in south Texas, but there are indeed much tougher hills than those of offer at L’eTape SA.
Next time you’re around, take an extra day to check out the area around Vanderpool, TX sometime. We used to have a little “bandit race” there back in the day when those were a thing.
You would love cycling there with your friends. It’s the pretty part of Texas. Pretty much the only one at that if developers haven’t spoiled it yet. Hah hah.
ridewithgps.com/routes/31758671
Congratulations on your win. Cheers, Phil!
Are you doing Vegas next week? I'm riding the 75 but definitely not competing. Weather is looking really good for it.
Hah, the yellow jersey!! perfect.
It’s just how the cookie crumbles 😎
Wooop woop, good job Phil
Great vid & ride Phil. It is what it is. You made sure your sponsor was 1st on the podium. 🤷🥳
Nice illuminating comments on team dynamics, which has always been a bit confusing to me as a noob to the sport.
That Factor bike is sweet. Any chance you can give us your views in July for the big one? You tend to cover angles and topics that other commentators don't touch.
‘Let’s not get mad at a State.’ Florida, and many of its friends, enters the chat.
This reminds me of the wealthy people paying for their childrens' success at USC😂
Lock picking lawyer drooling at the start.
12:16 there is a reason why CA is the most populous state. Is wonder what that reason is…🤔
You were the guest rider, right? I don’t think you were supposed to win. Looked interesting tho
How long would it take the Lockpicking Lawyer to clear that whole fence of locks?
Haha man, you did that guy dirty just drafting him for over an hour.
Nice work. Although I would argue the onus is on the other rider for towing a hill climb champion to the base of a up hill finish.
"if you get stuck and you have to win" lmao
Almost got barfing on camera at 4.40ish
good job
A bike is abit more intimate than a car. Asking to borrow a bike is like asking to borrow someones spouse.
That is actually some revisionist history. Mexico had already outlawed slavery and told settlers to the area that they couldn't bring slaves. They brought slaves, so Mexico went to kick them out.
BOAT = Bust Out Another Thousand
Perhaps we ought to know our history so we don't repeat mistakes, and avoid mistakes that others have made in the past.
I guess the stuff stuck on my bike paid for his Ferrari :)
No references....Does this mean Phil isn't a PeeWee fan?
Texas is a great state….just ask Larry Ellison
Sat on for an hour 😮 wow!
my feelings exactly. Dude never even tried to drop me
He probably looked back a few times, but to be fair Phil is riding with INVISIBLE frame stickers
@@utube7930 But those only make the bike disappear, so he'd see Phil riding nothing. 😉
YT compression absolutely lost its shit with that opening.
no cup holders? Must be a Spurs fan haha. That's English humour for ya
Do a bike race in Amarillo and see if your outlook on Texas is the same. You'll see 15 FJB signs in the first 3 miles!
I know it's part of the sport, but I hate negative cycling tactics like refusing to work in a small break in an AMATEUR race. Hate that game not player, I guess.
If he clearly stated 'I cant pull - my intention is to have my teammates catch up to us' then absolutely no harm, no foul.
@@ZachTheExcitedViper An ex-pro sitting on your wheel for an entire hour and then out-sprints you for the win, in an AMATEUR race???
I just find team tactics, when no one is getting paid (I guess technically Phil is through his sponsorship) a bit silly. If Phil's team was that strong and they absolutely wanted their other guy to win (instead of Phil), THEY could have pulled it back.
Again, I know that's how things can play out sometimes, but doesn't mean I have to like it.
@@Driver8takeabreak If an ex-pro is in the race it means its his job to help me win? Im not sure what point you're trying to make. Either its a race or its not a race, you cant have it both ways. In that spirit, had the 'ex pro' given him the win that would have been awful.
Yeah, that's road cycling for you. Amateur or not, tactics are a part of it.
@@ZachTheExcitedViper You should tell this to the "spirit of gravel" people.
Unless I’m missing something, the Ferrari wasn’t a stick shift? That seems wrong.
probably blame Peewee Herman for the "no Bike policy
People should be flocking to CA,....But they are not.
"This is a Lexus" had me dying!!
I rode the inaugural. Whenever that was. It freaking sucked dog balls. Totally disorganized, discombobulated and really stupid. Wont ever go back
chicken fried steak!
John Wayne was part of that right?
challenge: predict your 5k time in sand on the beach
Muhney!!!
Still doin' that racing sh*t, Phil?
Plese don't let small minded people cause you to think less of Texas, I live in Texas but there are 50 great states in the US, and all have good things to offer, no one is better than the other. People that have never left whatever area they are from often don't understand how great the entire country is
cars are coffins.
"This is the lock picking lawyer and what I have for you today is a cyclist who forgot his combination..."
How dare you come to Texas and not personally call me up for a ride... not having a clue who I am is no excuse! ha ha!
I felt like that when he came to Hawaii for mauna kea. Even did a post that he was welcome at my place and I'd take him out to dinner.
@@jayobannon5359 He is a horrible friend! ;-)
You ride in Malibu. Cal is lost
You don’t want to own a Ferrari, it stops being special. I assume anyway.
The people with the most expensive supercars(not a lower value, used purchased) tend to have multiple. If one needs work for a month, they don't really notice
@@veganpotterthevegan na, it just becomes normal. Driving one once is special. I bet Phil remembers that day forever. If you drive one every day it’s not so memorable.
People with multiple supercars just have too much money and don’t know what else to do with it.
@Fehr270 its definitely case by case. Plenty of my clients have supercar collections and they're not remotely disinterested in their cars
@@veganpotterthevegan imagine birthday cake every day. It’s still good but just not the same on day 25435.
@@Fehr270 that's definitely still far better than having a single day without birthday cake
i live in an area of California where Trump yard signs are very common. People outside of California think the whole state is Haight and Ashbury SF.
Haven't been to CA, but I well know that they sent people like Devin Nunes and Darrell Issa to Washington.
Hey Phil.. did they accept the results of the race? or did they start an insurrection? 😆
You are not woke enough, how dare you show the USA flag.
I've heard of some low down dirty things but not taking a pull for 2 hours is another level
Remember the Alamo *ISN'T bicycle friendly*
Matt seems like a good guy, he does retirement right.
Bikes were cheaper under donald trump.. have a cookie everyone.
Because of covid deaths that he recommended taking bleach for.
What a 🤡
