    This was an awesome video!
    It helped me be patient with the brassavola keikis my sister brought me (after i killed the first one). My 2 babies are starting to show that they want to survive...real roots, another leaf growing. Perhaps they may even bloom this year. Thank you! I'm so grateful!
    They also like the misting with the seaweed water.

      Hi 😍💐 I am so glad that you found this video because, the day I had the light bulb moment about these brassavola roots, it helped me figure out so many issues I had with anything to do with brassavola, including hybrids. If there is a brassavola parent in a hybrid, the roots of that hybrid will take on the root life cycle of the brassavola parent. So, yes, I am really glad that you see this video for what it is 👍🏼 I am going to keep my fingers crossed that your's will bloom for you this year! Thank you so much for your comment. I feel this video is totally underrated 😅 but here you are and I appreciate your feedback very much! Hope you are having a great start to the new week 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      😍 HI Laura 💐 thank YOU, for watching and for your feedback. I appreciate you 🫶🏼 since this video aired, the orchid has been mounted on cork, but I did not remove the inorganic structure to protect those roots that would turn viable the next season. While it looks ridiculous, now that I know that roots will die back when new roots take over, I can slowly pick away at the inorganic mount and eventually there won't be much left of it, but my orchid will be just fine. Mess with brassavola roots and the orchid can just go tilt. 4 new growths for this season are also, already on their way 🙌🏼 ❤️🌸

    My new Rustic Spots made a bunch of new roots right after repotting and they're already turning green.
    The Rustic Spots is half Bc. Richard Mueller which is Brassavola nodosa × Cattleya milleri.
    The good thing is most orchids have to be repotted every 2-3 years anyway. Most of my orchids are in at least 75-85% bark.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  3 місяці тому +5

      Hi Joe 😍💐 That is great news! With the many different parents that the Rustic Spot has, the nodosa only having 25% influence, it is possible that the characteristics of the root system are cancelled out by all the other ancestors. The most important thing is, that the roots are taking up water so soon, and if your Rustic Spots is one that dumps roots on a regular basis, you know why 😊 thank you so much for watching this video! I hope that you are having a great day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids Maybe the new Yellow Bird hybrid is going to be more of an issue with the roots?
      It is B. nodosa 4N x Bl Richard Mueller.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  3 місяці тому +5

      Keep an eye on that one, yes! I would not call it an issue, because you have the right media mix, but... know that it could be 'one of those' that grows a great root sytem and then after 2 years just dumps it. There is a lot of Brassavola in that hybrid and the root dumping is not going to be anything you did wrong. But, it is a vigorous root grower, so there is that 👍🏼👍🏼

    Good morning Nina,
    what a great start into this sunny day, watching your bassavola- video.
    Did't know they are so finniky with their roots.
    May yours will all make lots of new roots this season!
    I've got one hybrid here in my livingroom since spring 2021.
    It's Brassocathanthe Jairak Finch. I Did not want any mounts because of my low humindity (40%), but this one came mounted on a black plastic mount, and I could not seperate the plant without destroying all of her roots. So I left her on, and hung her into a pot in order to provide more humindity around the roots.
    Last summer I watered her, by filling ip the pot with water, let her soak about 15 minutes and let her become dry again.
    The roots were taking the water very well.
    In winter I only sprayed the roots when they were completely dry.
    Now with more sun and temperature started zo grow 3 new growth. I began soaking again. The old roots look burned on the survace now.
    Think they are still are functional. And she starts some (norxmany) new roots now. 🤗
    I'm exiting (and now a bit scared 😬) how she will do this year...

      Hi Sandra 😍💐 good morning (next day) to you! 🙌🏼 what a wonderful start to your comment, Sandra, thank you so much for being so motivating 🥰 I hope my information isn't the reason you are scared of how your Jairak will do this year. If it dumps it's old roots, then, you know that you have not done anything wrong, the brassavola parent is so strong... it can happen, but your 3 new growths will provide the next set of roots, so... party time! 🥳🙌🏼 I hope you have yourself a great Thursday, and thank you so much for watching 🌸

      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +4

      Hi Shirley 😍even though my Little Stars came in my horrible order, and was afflicted with the Orchid F Bomb, I am 90% certain that, my initial attempt at leca and self watering would not have been a success. I probably relied too much on my heat mats and lights back in the day, to really observe what needs to be done to keep the roots of any brassavola happy. My circumstances the past 2 years, really made me watch with a much keener memory bank. I can see your Little Stars as a happy camper.... if I should ever get one into my collection again, I cannot, at this point in time predict what I would do with it, but, having figured out the cycle by which brassavola roots start to actually function efficiently, ... it would be another test to see what would work best in my set up with Little Stars and inorganic media. I think the roots would love lava rock, but... yikes.. repotting a root system with lava rock... its like dealing with the notorious coconut shell on new orchids that we get in 😬 thank YOU so much for watching, and for leaving me your comment, Shirley, I so appreciate you! ❤🌸

    🦒🙌🌺🙋‍♀️They sure are stingy on the root front, looking at my tuberculata. Not so much with my hybrid jimminey cricket. I am trying a new type of mount with my tuberculata seeing how they grow in their native habitat but I only started in the fall. It grew a little bit over the winter and I would say it is working but so very very slow. But I am hopeful. Your flagellaris is looking great. So interesting, that 3 year cycle!!! You've nailed it !!! I will pay more attention to them from here on but so far my roots are not really that long. Keeping my hopes high for the summer, as in previous summer and the ones before that 🤣The wind is still blowing like crazy and it showered heavily during the night. The sky is clear at the moment but it's cold, 11 C and it will not go higher than 16C. It's almost May for goodness sake🙄!!!! Insane! I have tied some orchids down and no accidents, but yes... and the temperatures?? What is going on 🤬 I had a cold spell this morning, where it was only 14º outside, and then it got to 18º.... and this evening it is back down to 14º, tomorrow supposedly 20º but the nights will not match this time of year. I have to mount it finally on a piece of coir sheet and now it’s finally getting some roots. This was in clay pot with pebbles (not leca, just flat clay pebbles you put on the ground to avoid weeds). • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 місяці тому +5

      😍HI Suzie Quetie 💐 no... 😅 they will dump their roots regardless! It is the way this genus grows. Clearly they think that what they have growing next time around, will be just fine for giving life and vigor to the growths. Its an amazing observation though, because, while a potted brassavola dumps it's roots, we can say it was too much water, BUT, on a mounted brassavola, the roots on the mounts get dumped regardless of wet / dry cycle, so.... drawing a false conclusion because a potted up brassavola lost it's roots, can be a problem for all potted brassavolas. I hope that this video can make it's rounds because I believe it will help anyone that is frustrated, thinking they cannot grow these orchids well in a pot, or even a hybrid with this genus in it. Well, understanding the life cycle of the roots of this genus will give peace of mind... in my opinion 🤗 I have had an 'ish' day! I thought I would get done what needed to be done, but it was a little discomboblulated, so ... I shall try and do better mañana (when in Spain) 🤔🫣😆 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +5

      Yes... the Brassavola parent is strong, and that is why we see that star shaped bloom from the Brassavola when hybridized. It takes over whatever characteristics the other parent has. so, the root behavior is the same as if it were the species, with the exception that, if the other parent has any influence at all, then there may be more generous root growth compared to the Brassavola as a species. 😬

    Hi Nina! I have to agree! Brassavolas hate Leca. From my experience. I have two pieces of rootless cordata just starting new roots. I do have a complicating factor. The ph in my plant pots were too low and many of my plants were showing signs of decline. I don’t know if my cordatas will make it if they have to wait a year to start absorbing water. As they have zero other roots I hope they overlook that rule. Right now they are sort of bare root but sitting on top of orchiata in a cup. I have struggling little stars in similar situations. I don’t know if I will be brave enough to try Leca again. They are beautiful plants so I hope they survive. Thanks for the video and sharing you’re experience. Have a great day tomorrow! Hi 😻💐 I have thought about my hybrid in this video, and when it starts new roots, I am going to do a lava rock / self watering set up. I will grow Brassavolas in the same manner that I grow Dendrobiums, that objected to leca and are coming back strong in lava rock. I don't like lava rock because it is a nightmare when it comes to repotting, especially if an orchid has the tendency to drop roots, but... big word in the orchid world... but, I think that while the orchid is in lava rock, it will do a whole lot better than in leca, clearly 😬 I will keep my fingers crossed that your's will pull through. 🤞🏼🤞🏼 my peepers are much much better, thank you! Ahhhh, I can totally relate 😆 I have always had a hard time understanding brassavolas. Funny thing is I love brassavola hybrids and I have probably 30 of them 😆 Nevertheless I always struggle with understanding them. They don't seem to have a consistent behaviour (the hybrids). My observation is some are very thirsty, some prefer it on the dry side, some love my typical potting in bark and pumice, some hate it. A mystery! A frustrating one! 😆 I recently bought a cucullata (fun fact - almost a 100% of cucullata for sale in the past 20-30 years are actually appendiculata due to a taxonomic mistake 😁). It is potted in moss (arrived in it from the nursery) and currently it is growing new roots and I am sooooo afraid of repotting it. I think I am just going to add more sphagnum around the original sphagnum ball and leave it be. 🤷

    • @NinjaOrchids

      Hi Galya 😍💐 I love the hybrids as well, but, as you can see, I don't have that many, because I had to learn about the behavior of the root system first. If I cannot grow them well in my set up, and mounted, here, is not an option, then... I am glad that I didn't go all crazy buying more of them. I love that fun fact that you pointed out. Very interesting how long that has been going on and now, maybe with new technology to get a closer look, they figured out the mistake? Super interesting! Until your orchid has settled in, I think you are doing the right thing to just give it a fresh boost around the roots, without going all in. Then you can rest easy and enjoy knowing that she will be fine 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Galya! Have yourself a great Thursday 🌸

    Hi Nina, Great video. I have just bought one hybrid. It is planted half in construction stone and half (top half) is moss. I dont know what Im doing or what to look for apart from allowing the moss to dry before rewatering. Would that be correct??

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  8 місяців тому +3

      Hi Cheryl 😍💐 it is good to see you!! I hope you are doing well 🫶🏼😃 that is a fantastic mixture and whoever potted that orchid up knew exactly what they were doing. Humidity to encourage new roots to grow into the pot and then a nice wet / dry cycle media as the main media. Awesome! I like that and it is the first time that I have heard it being done this way 👍🏼 yes, in that set up, let the moss dry out before rewatering and if you think that it is taking a little too long for the moss to dry out, the lower roots ending up being dry for too long, then soak the pot from the bottom up. Just fill a tray, or a decorative pot with water and or nutrients to ⅓ height of the total pot so as not to reach the top. The roots are down there and will enjoy an extra soak before the top dries out. However, if your humidity is low, then ideally you want the moss to be slightly damp to the touch. I hope this helps 🤞🏼 if my reply has prompted further questions, do not hesitate to ask. Congratulations on your newcomer 🥳🥳 thank you so much for watching this video and for your kind feedback! Have yourself a beautiful Saturday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    I would say that nodosa is different here, the roots typically begin absorbing water after the next new growth begins, and this is passed on to Little Stars. Since nodosa can produce upwards of four growths in a year, and it produces many roots per growth, it is probably the easiest to grow (especially on a mount). Now cucullata, that one is very reluctant to grow new roots. I am half tempted to take one of my two and put it into a s/h setup with growstones and see if I can't get it to grow more roots. Couple that with the fact that it is sloooooooooooooow to produce new growths, I can see why a lot of people have a hard time growing it. It is actually almost comical that I would say Dimorphorchis lowii grows new structures faster than cucullata.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +4

      Don Miguel 😍💐hola jefe! The only difference I conclude, is that, in your environment, nodosa is capable of producing multiple cycles of growths within a 12 month period, as opposed to my climate, one cycle of new growths on the the species I have in my collection. BUT, from what you are telling me, even the nodosa's new roots will only activate once it comes into active growth with new growths, same as the species that I have... even though I speak of last year's new roots, because I only get one cycle of new growths, it is the new active growth it is starting now, by which the last year's roots start absorbing. I hope that makes sense, because, you are saying the same thing with nodosa roots and the timing when they are absorbing. No difference as to the timing. My challenge now, is to find the media ratio for the tuberculata, and see if during this summer, I can get more roots to grow because the sponge rock was only started last year, with existing roots that extended. 😬 brassavola roots have been a study for me these past years, and the other day I finally got the 2021 roots to hydrate, and bingo, all eyes are on the move, not just nubbins. I was pretty proud of myself 😅😅 thank you so much for watching, Michael! Have yourself a relaxing evening 😘

      Hi Ileana 😍💐 good to see you again! I hope you are doing well 🙌🏼 this is going to sound like something you have heard often, if not over and over again.... light! Brassavolas need a LOT of light to get to bloom. Intensity and strength of light is so important. So, here is my question.... what is the brand of lights you have? How long have you had your Brassavolas? When it comes to light... the Nanipuakea Dogashima that I reference in this video, had bright dappled sun / shade here in southern Spain, and it did not bloom for me for 2 years, being a mature plant. I did not want it on the east side of my patio, because that area is not only really hot, but super sunny as well, and I did not want to crisp the leaves up. Well, one season I moved it to the East side, and what do you know, it promptly bloomed and the leaves did not crisp up at all. I was so surprised at just how much light this genus can take. Which makes it a headache when they are used in hybrids because, the other parent may not like that high light, the leaves might burn, and subsequently the orchid won't bloom. I don't want to leave you hanging with an 'obvious' suggestion, but this growing season... push your orchids with light, it may feel uncomfortable to do so, monitor the warmth of the leaves to get an idea as to if they heat up. But that is the only suggestion I can provide,... especially if your's are growing well, otherwise. Thank you so much for watching, Ileana!! Really appreciate your time 🌸

      yep... my cattleyas in the covered portico bloomed fine.... brassavola, nope! That is why it took me so long to change the location, 'if cattleyas bloom, then dang... right?' Wrong 😅 Even my white blooming species, need to have a lot of anthocyanin on their leaves to even think of blooming, and then if there is a growth that has matured in slightly lesser light... no blooms, same plant! That is why I have been so OTT observant of the ones that I have 😅

      HI Giselle 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you so much for watching and for being here. I truly appreciate your time and support 🫶🏼 if your brassavola is not suffering any kind of fungal or bacterial infection, then there is a good chance that you can save it. I do not know your growing conditions, how much humidity you have, or how you grow your orchids, but 2 ways you can encourage root growth is to place it into a pot that has only sphagnum moss in it and keep that bed of moss damp, not wet. Also, do not fill the pot with the moss, instead, just half way so that the base of the orchid is not exposed to too much air. Keeping the base of the orchid lower on the damp moss increases the humidity around it, and give the piece good light. If you prefer to mount your orchids, then do the same, but place the piece on top of the moss and keep that nice and damp. Again, in good light. I hope that this is of some help and if you have any further questions, please let me know! In the meantime, thank you so much for watching! Have yourself a wonderful Sunday and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸
