    God, I wanted Wildstar to succeed. Combat aside, the art and themes fucking slapped! Like... how can you go wrong with what was, stylistically, a Ratchet and Clank MMO?

      I'm also a fan of the MMO. Love the combat, the theme, graphics, and the choice of races was nice (Chua for the win!).
      Sadly, like any MMOs, it launched with SO many bugs and glitches that never got fixed. Everyone knows if you have a terrible MMO launch, it's dead. (Unless your FF14).

    Wildstar really was an amazing game that was doomed due to the poor focus of the devs being too much on the 'hardcore player' bandwagon that they neglected more casual players. While it had a few issues that I feel didn't help draw more players in (performance wise it could be lackluster in some areas, and the 'profession' jobs that was meant as a big feature felt rather pointless that could of made leveling more interesting) it was still over-all so fun with its combat and the raids for those who were more hardcore were incredible.

    • @kaicluster6783
      @kaicluster6783 13 днів тому

      In reality that was not the problem at all. By today's standards, the game was BARELY in EA. A lot of features were not working, some of them were good on paper, but completely disconnected form the game's experience overall.
      All in all, the game was a mess.
      Being focused on the hardcore player is just a front for the people who didn't want to admit that a high profile game flopped in such a way, because back then, such cases were not really as common as they are today.

    • @Asin24
      @Asin24 13 днів тому +1

      @@kaicluster6783 A front for what? I mean I'm up for hearing what reasons you think it was a mess and 'barely EA'. If the game was barely EA, then you could label a lot of EA games as being in Alpha. Most games don't even have as much content as Wildstar had on launch, heck in many ways it reflected WoW with the content it did have at launch (obviously not 1 to 1 ihaving some features and missing some wow had).
      Endgame had
      1.) Dungeons (Which could be done for gear)
      2.) PvP (Pvp being very popular with the combat).
      3.) Raids (I believe there were technically 2 on launch)
      4.) Housing
      5.) World Events
      6.) Crafting/Gathering
      Dailies I believe were added a bit after launch so I didn't add them. Could be missing stuff but pretty sure I had all the features down, and if not it would only benefit your arguement haivng less.
      Beyond some performance issues that tended to be mostly in certain zones (The dome/space zone I know was far from great on my PC personally) I don't recall anything that was outright a mess.

    Videos like this just make me glad that Star Trek Online, for all of its flaws, has managed to survive for nearly 15 years and do fairly well for itself.

    There was FF14 1.0 lovers that left with ARR. Some came back, most never did though. Wildly from the final few patches to the game leading in to the 5 year time gap between it and ARR. But dear lord, I think everyone, including the original FF11 players who were used to the grindy MMO gameplay and obtuse bullshit to get to the story were NOT fans of it. Combined with it having a bigger reach thanks to FF’s growing popularity overseas, it nearly sank the company.
    I highly recommend you finally do a watch-along on the first 5/6 episodes of The Fall & Rise of FFXIV by SpeakersNetwork and the three NoClip Documentaries on 1.0 still one day.
    Also, great vid Caff!

    Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, The Exciting Game About Standing In Line (TM). Even the marketing images showed a bunch of characters standing in line. I played in the beta. The world was gorgeous, but there were a lot of starting zones, most of which were empty. There were several unique character classes that I have not seen before or since, and some of the traditional ones were implemented in an interesting fashion. There was even a form of social combat / diplomacy, which you could use under certain circumstances.
    But the developers' insistence on having no instanced content meant that, when you did find a zone with players, you ended up spending a lot of time waiting for quest objectives to respawn. So ... the worst of both worlds, either utterly empty or overcrowded, depending on where you were.
    I would have loved to see that game succeed. It had a LOT of great ideas, some of which were actually implemented well. /sigh

    I played Tarisland on PC briefly, but it was way too much of a mobile game for my tastes. It was also painfully obvious when grouping up that most players were actually playing on mobile devices. There were a ton of players on though, so the Steam charts on this one aren't very representative of the game's total population.
    I also played Life Is Feudal extensively during its initial release, Vanguard for several months before it shut down, and Pax Dei for just a short time during testing. Your video is missing some important info on some of these games that is skewing the context of your presentation. Life is Feudal, for example, was actually shut down entirely for several years as Xsolla (the payment processor) yoinked the game out from under the original developers. It resurfaced under an entirely different dev team awhile back.
    There are other omissions that I think are pretty important, such as Pax Dei still being in early access and under heavy development. During which it is entirely normal and often necessary to do wipes of various types.
    I'm no fan of shady, incompetent, or lazy developers but the info in this video seems pretty incomplete and potentially misleading. I usually enjoy and appreciate the videos you make but this one has me scratching my head.

    • @luccienv
      @luccienv 14 днів тому +2

      Yeah, for Tarisland the initial release on PC was through their own launcher so I doubt many switched over so the playercount is misleading, but the way they handled content and progression was/is terrible but I thought the ingame guides to raids were a nice touch and the community wasn't very toxic and accepted people learning new mechs and stuff (in the beginning at least)

    So glad warhammer is getting the love it deserves. It deserved way better than how it was released managed by EA. It’s still a shining gem and every time I play it I’m amazed at what we had back then and didn’t realize it. From the classes to the races, everything nowadays seems so bland and plain in new mmos. Hope it never dies.

      It came out in an era when everything was hyped as a World of Warcraft killer when they should have been focused on just making a good Warhammer game. Didn't help that the release was rushed and some race/class options that were advertised/hyped as being available at release were delayed until later patches. Glad people are still finding it fun though.

    Wildstar's problem was publisher hubris and a gross misunderstanding of the market.
    Had it launched as buy-to-play or free-to-play it would probably still be around today.

    No one remembers Maplestory 2. Honestly was such a good MMO for what it was, but the fact it was very poorly managed (Nexon moment) and could not decide if it wanted to be a more casual dress up/ house decorating sim or a hardcore raiding grindfest led to it just dying only 2 years after launch. Such a shame it died so fast.

  • @Shiirow
    @Shiirow 13 днів тому +1

    Wildstar was a game that the developers over estimated the desire for a vanilla wow style experience. They were slow to update and add in QoL changes and ultimately the game died off quickly. People always misunderstand that WoW didnt get 12million players in vanilla, they got that in Wrath which was a huge upgrade over what vanilla had. The vanilla andy's are a vocal but niche group of players and not big enough of a group to support a huge MMO that the Wildstar devs were clearly hoping for.
    I liked Wildstar but it was vanilla wow like to hold my attention. I played that already, and really prefer the wrath experience over it. If only they moved quicker instead of being stubborn with keeping attunements and 40 man raids.

    Apparently too iirc like Ashes of Creation, the amount of resources needed to craft stuff aren't really obtainable for a solo player in a reasonable amount of time. More or less forcing people to be in guilds, large friend groups, or viewers if you're a content creator.

    The Matrix Online was really great. You had to be there at the beginning though.
    They literally hired actors to play as characters from the movies. You could literally walk up to Morpheus, Niobe, Ghost, etc etc and talk to them and the actors playing the characters would talk back to you never breaking character. They would also give players missions and if you were super lucky, they'd fight in a special mission with your team. It really felt like you were in the movies.
    What's also crazy is that the MMO is canon to the movies including The Matrix 4. Everything they talked about happening in the matrix 4 happened in the MMO. Morpheus's death, everything that happened to the exiles, all the stuff with Neo and Trinity. They would have story updates for the game that carried the story forward. When Morpheus was killed, that was a setup for a bunch of new missions and enemies to fight against.
    And the clothing options you could unlock and craft! That was one of the best parts. Being able to unlock new outfits to try and get the exact look you wanted so you could stand out. And there were agents that were impossible to fight. If you went to the dangerous zones, you got more exp for doing missions there and there was a risk of getting chased by Agents. Me and my party were getting chased by one agent and he was 100% going one hit kill all of us. So I sacrificed myself by engaging in hand to hand combat with him. This kept him from chasing and shooting everyone for about 5 or 6 seconds. just enough time for everywhere to Super Jump into the safe zones. I'm telling you man, that game was intense. Very clunky though...it was always doomed to fail. You had to be a matrix super fan AND an MMO lover back then to understand why the game was so clunky. Back then there was no such thing as casual MMOs.
    The game was not only clunky, but like most MMOs before WoW, it was hard. so if a casual gamer decided to try it, they'd have to get through multiple barriers: Sony Online Entertainment's convoluted and stupid payment process and account creation, figuring out how to download the launcher, log in to the launcher, download the game through the launcher which was a nightmare, then once they get into the game, figure out how to move and do combat. If you were new to MMOs back then, you'd definitely give up after 20 minutes. Even for back then, it was a clunky and janky game. Not a good first MMO for anyone. And yeah, the missions were repetitive after a while. After like a month of playing, it got boring because it took FOREVER to level up and get new clothing, weapons, skills etc. It just wasn't worth playing. Especially by the time other MMOs like City of Heroes came out where you could basically make your own matrix like characters anyway with vastly better controls and graphics. The Matrix Online did have better clothing options and combat animations though. it still beats out even modern MMOs in that regard.
    I think a Cyberpunk MMO could take it's place now days.

    And a third one is DC Universe online. An mmo set in the DC universe? Yes please!
    Then people played it. Instance based, limited maps and sub par pvp

    Psst, FF14 is falling back down the hole as we speak. Game is boring as piss and is the same release model that's been happening, since HW.
