    Be like me and don't care what anyone says. Just be yourself and nothing less. Your beard looks wonderful. It took patience and willpower to grow especially in the awkward period in the early stage. I salute you !

      You are too kind. Since that video 5 years ago, I have settled on the shorter "King George V" style, which I think looks really smart. Be that as it may, I have got to the stage where, at nearly 70 I feel I should be able to be mildly eccentric without feelings of guilt.

    Yeah, I'm 45 and I have a few friends who have said that I look 55 with my long beard. My beard is at 10 months like yours and is more grey than the hair on my head. I don't really care if I look a bit older because I like my beard and I don't care to try and look like I'm 30. I played Santa this year at 2 church parties here in Japan. I am growing my beard for the full 12 months and then I will decide what to do from there. Great Video! You covered this topic very well! Blessings!

    • @earlgreybeard
      @earlgreybeard  7 років тому +1

      Cheers Kevin. Actually I had considered the theatrical possibilities of the beard. Bookings as Santa is one option, but also casting agencies frequently need bearded extras.

      I turn 50 in a few days. Growing out a beard (into week 3 now) for first time ever, minus a week long attempt in my 20s. I plan to go at least 3 months without touching it other than oils and balms. Then I would like to produce a long beard over a full year. But mine has a lot of grey!

    • @KevinQualls
      @KevinQualls 7 років тому

      Hi Kiltman1, I was same the as you until this year. I had grown short beards while in my 20's and 30's but nothing like taking it to the next level with a yeard. I started out saying I wanted to grow a 6 month beard but when I reached that point I felt like I was just getting started and said I'll grow until 9 months. But, by that time I was so used to it I thought why not take it to the full yeard. My wife of 20 years has been very supportive. I probably will cut it back considerably once I reach the yeard but I'm enjoying it now. Blessings!

    • @KevinQualls
      @KevinQualls 6 років тому

      Bickle's the Bomb!: Hey, thanks for reaching out. I achieved my yeard goal in February and I have since cut it back to a two month beard. In China, do you get a lot of people staring at you because of your big beard? If China is like Japan there are probably not a lot of Chinese men growing long beards. So, when they see a man with a big beard it probably gets a lot attention I would imagine. That's what happened to me in Japan. I like your channel name. I am assuming you are refering to the Bickle yogurt drink. It is good!

    • @KevinQualls
      @KevinQualls 6 років тому

      Thanks. Well, I got that wrong. Sorry about that. Bickle is a yogurt drink company here. We also have Yokult scooters that drive around our neighborhoods delivering their drinks directly but they also sell Yokult in the grocery stores here. No, unfortunately, I also cut my mustache back when I cut my beard back to a two-month beard. I will grow my big beard back sometime in the future as I did like the process. The only thing I didn't like in my yeard journey was the 4th month awkward stage. As least that was my awkward month. It's probably different for others.

    Great video brother! I’m 37 and I love having a beard. I have found that the ladies who like my beard usually are the ladies that I have more in common with over all anyway. I’m not interested in trying to impress anyone that doesn’t like me for who I am. In other words the beard is staying!

    • @earlgreybeard
      @earlgreybeard  7 років тому +3

      Hi Marcelino. You are not the first to confirm that a beard is a great tool in attracting only the right ladies. That's a great discovery to make.

  • @meridithellis4555

    I found this video because my boyfriend has been growing his beard out for me and he feels like people think he is older or he looks like an "old man" because his beard is greying...
    I like what u said about not looking artificially younger as opposed to looking older because thats more true, in my opinion.
    For the record, there are plenty of young women that desire facial hair!

    • @earlgreybeard
      @earlgreybeard  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Meredith. It's all a matter of perception I reckon. I think beards give a look of distinction and gravitas, but my wife doesn't agree. I think she had become so used to my having (in effect) long stubble all those years that the arrival of a full-blown beard was rather a shock. It's like she has lost the man she once had, who has been replaced by some old codger. And yet people who did not know me previously love it. If you two are both on the same page, then that is brilliant.

      Hi Greg, and thanks for the encouragement. From your videos, you have a lot more colour in your beard than I do. I am not an expert, but the theory is that if you hang in there and get some length and weight, that will cure a lot of the issues you have earlier on. Stay with it bro.

  • @BillyWidener

    Well, to me, older men with white beard, long or short, in some ways it looks like they gain more wisdom. I always admire older men with big mustache, nice ones, or nice presentable beard makes me want to have one. And now I’m in my early 50’s and do have more white hairs on my beard. I do get various comments about my beard. Especially that I’m in a city full of clean cut guys. It’s a sad thing to see. Anyway, I really don’t care what people think of my beard. I just finally mark the goal of my yeard growth (currently it’s a year and 4 months). I’m not sure if I’m going for my tweard. Will see. 😊 Anyway, good video. Subscribed!

    • @earlgreybeard
      @earlgreybeard  6 років тому +1

      I certainly found that it makes me feel that I have somehow 'authenticated' myself by being different. Here too, most younger men have beards, some very spectacular, though most are short and smart. But as an older man with a white beard, you really stand out in that kind of crowd.

    Turned 70 last June and never had a beard in my life. I'm now 60 days into the yeard challenge. How about some reasonable arguments for a wife who hates my beard. I adore her in every way but I'm becoming quite fond of my beard. Any experiences with this dilemma? Love your videos by the way.

    • @earlgreybeard
      @earlgreybeard  6 років тому +1

      Hi John. I do like the length of beard I now have. My plan is to go for as smart a style as possible at this length. It would also give time for the shorter beard hairs to get to full length to improve thickness. The moustache I shall keep growing and trimming. But if you, or anyone else here has suggestions I would welcome advice.

    • @JRBox-ls2od
      @JRBox-ls2od 6 років тому

      Ray, the only suggestion I would have would be to keep doing whatever you've been doing, because your beard looks terrific! That said, the length of your beard in the initial Cut and Grind video actually suits you quite well. That beard with a more prominent mustache would also be a winner! Best to ya, JB

      I had a six month white beard while I was working in a retail store, and the Santa Claus comments were fairly common. I have to admit that I hated them. I no longer work retail...I'm now officially retired and thus old...and I'm growing my beard again and at three months I haven't had a single comment, which is good. Like Mr. Greybeard, I tend to be a bit thin skinned about what people say, although i wish I wasn't.

    I'm 64 and keep my beard close cropped, about 6mm. For the most part and probably because I have few wrinkles and still have a jawline that doesn't sag most people have me in my late 50's. If I grew out the beard I know I'd look in my late 60's due to the amount of grey.

    • @earlgreybeard

      Sure. We are about the same age, 66 in my case. It sounds like you did what made you comfortable, which is great. I had my beard like yours for decades, and really needed a change. I find that I have an impish delight in looking older than I am. You get a bit more respect for sure. But also, I get a lot of admiration for the big white beard (though I say it myself :o). All in all, it feels like I am getting away with a sort of cheeky deception. It's great!

    • @earlgreybeard

      @@saltymccreamer7388 Yes. Life threw me a few curve balls. My wife had a stroke a year ago, and is having to learn to walk again. She is doing pretty well, but we have had a lot of building work done in the house. So I am struggling a bit in a number of ways. The good news is that I have nearly finished my garden workshop, and will then have a permanent studio where I can just film stuff without getting out a load of gear. Perfectionist you see,.
      On the other hand, I did rather lose momentum when I finished the yeard. I had got into a settled state with a style I liked, using products I liked, etc. So in many ways I have a lot less to say. My plan is to make a few more beard videos, but to try to branch out into some other areas. Nice meeting you Salty (if only your eSelf :o).

    Girls like stubble. Women like beards.

    • @earlgreybeard
      @earlgreybeard  5 років тому +1

      I guess that stubble can sometimes look a little 'adolescent' as it were. The other rule that seems to apply is that people who knew you before the beard hate it when it arrives, and those you meet afterwards love it. Unless of course you have Asperger's syndrome (like me) and then everyone hates you regardless :o)

      Ha ha. Fair bit, yes. But I am very much an amateur. Strange you should say that, because I had been thinking of starting a series entitled "Philosophy of the Common Man". We often hear what the experts think, but the rest of us still need to think something, don't we? And it may be fun to record what one ordinary bloke thinks. Do you reckon anyone would be interested? Might give someone a good laugh.

    • @berserkersam9118
      @berserkersam9118 6 років тому

      I think people would enjoy it. It is good to think for yourself, while there may be some prudence to seeking the advice of experts on whatever it is that one is looking into one still needs to deside for themselves whether or not they are going to listen or not. And ultimately I believe one should make their own decisions influenced not by what experts say but by what information one has found surrounding the topic in question. It is good to take time to contemplate matters. I like that word by the way "contemplate" it has a certain ring to it that I like.
