Beards, music and philosophy. What's not to like?
The Lure of the North
Early Greybeard (Raymond Wiseman) makes a pilgrimage to the North East of England to visit the places where the Celtic saints made their home back in the 7th century AD. During this time, he thinks back to the places, people and music that encouraged him to become a member of the modern-day Northumbria Community.

The theme for 2022 is "Medieval Women: Music Makers and Muses", which is why all the main-stage performers you will see here are women. It was so difficult to do justice to this incredibly diverse eve...

Doyoyknow where @Shie Skye is based now ? I’d love her to do my beard ❤
I live in Nottingham, so I have no idea. My advice if I may offer it, would be to find a good barber near to your home.
@ thanks friend. I’ve got a near yeard, and the last person I gave my beard to, ruined it. Cut n grind are expensive and I’d rather give my money to someone like Skye who talks a good talk, and knows what she’s doing 🙏🏽
@@jobharath2812 Sounds sensible,. I certainly couldn't afford to keep going up to London every time I needed a trim, so I bit the bullet and tried out some local barbers. The ones I tried were at least capable, and two have been really good. But I agree that it can be a bit hit and miss. We could do with a 'Trusted Barber" list 😬
Thank you Raymond, it was a pleasure to walk a little bit of this pelgrimage with you. Great job, this video!
Thank-you Marianne. It was a lovely group of people wasn't it?
@@earlgreybeard Yes it certainly was Raymond!
Wow. Great video. Love how you introduce and distil the essence of Northumbria and some of its early saints in under 9 mins.
Thanks Rob. I did actually have a problem coming up with a cohesive storyline. I had the sites and saints pilgrimage plus my own story to somehow weave together. And I guess you have to keep things short on UA-cam or nobody will watch it 🤣
I’m 37 and I look 45 with the long beard . More since got some gray in it .
Understood. Do you like that effect? Can give you more gravitas if you want it, but that might not be what you are looking for. Me, I need all the gravitas I can get 😁
Does anyone anybody know where Skye is working now ? Thanks
I find the odd hair from time to time dropping out. I find that styling and waxing my moustache means I'm not constantly moving it out of my mouth though, which probably causes more hair loss
I get the same. That used to worry me in the early days, but I have found over time that losing the odd hair now and then seems to make little noticeable difference. I comfort myself by thinking that I am just weeding out the no-hopers that would have fallen out anyway 😆. But I am also finding these days that I don't often use heavy wax so often. This is partly because it is now difficult to find strong wax that is at all pleasant to use. But also because alternative products like Upper Cut Monster Hold and Robin Hood styling balm give a pretty good hold for most days and styles that I have.
@@earlgreybeard I use proraso wax, it applies like a cream and sets so there's no heating or having to work with it tacky
@@joehenshall8735 OK. Thanks for the recommendation. I just ordered some. I'll get back to you...
@@joehenshall8735 OK. So I have tried the Proraso over a few weeks, on and off. Seems really good stuff. It is like my spiking gel, in that it leaves the moustache very stiff like it is frozen. But much nicer to use than the gel, and leaves me with none of the annoying 'vampire fangs' in the middle of the moustache as the day progresses. I will add this to my list of regular purchases. Thanks.
@@earlgreybeard it has its flaws but I definitely prefer it to using a stiffer wax where I'm pulling hairs out every day! I find less is more with it.
She has great insight. She needs her own channel!
Good to see you back; thank you for sharing a flake of your life and past with us. Thank you for the experience. PS good to see the beard still going!
Hey Stimpy. I used to work with a Stimpy. I am guessing you are not the same one. I am actually looking at some new subjects to cover, so watch this space if you will.
@@earlgreybeardNope that wasn’t me; have yet to make it to the UK. I’ll keep an eye out for the upcoming content!
I’m sorry but the barber said about Tidying up. I was tidy in the first place. Your bearded was just longer from the last time you had a trim with the nice young lady. He didn’t seem confident. Your neared looks amazing anyway my friend. But I think a bearded at the length you have it. You should be able to create a any style you want❤
Yes, it was great while it lasted. Sadly. at that length my wife insisted that I looked as if I had 'just escaped from a gulag' whoever had trimmed the beard.
Pure class. Just subbed <3
I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks, I want a woman who’s genuinely into the man I am underneath this goatee & long hair. I’m a man that’s passionate about writing, a family man who loves kids & animals, & who’s very protective of his loved ones. As for those that judge me negatively based on my appearance, they can go fkkkkk themselves for all I care… 👍
Thanks Simon. I have a 5 year old granddaughter now, so the 'Santa' look is coming in handy 😁
Brilliant insightful and very enjoyably interesting sir❤
Got beard envy..u look wonderful and seem a lovely gentleman ❤
Ha ha. You are too kind. "Grumpy old git" my wife would say...
Great! Thank You for sharing your experience.
A very poignant video , I can’t believe it’s 6 years since you started this channel .
Ha ha. It means I am even older now than when I first started!
Glad to see you again ! Very interesting video! I used to watch your beard videos, greetings from an Italian follower .
Hi. Yes, I have widened my scope a little since then. Beard is still there though 😁
Yeha it looks much better great 👍
Good to hear from you again, thank you for taking us along on your journey.
Hi Jim. Good to hear from you too.
Good to see you again. Nice to see the area you grew up in.
Thanks Theo. Yes, it is an interesting place.
Thanks for the tour of your childhood home area. What kind of camera are you using. Is it a drone?
Hi John. Sadly, my drone shots were all out of focus. Usual issue with the DJI Mini 3 pro. Forgot to set the focus to infinity. So, everything you see on the video is filmed with an Insta360 X3 360 degree camera. This "magically" removes the selfie pole in the recorded footage. The result can therefore look like low-flying drone shots, especially when using the 3 metre extended selfie pole.
@@earlgreybeard thanks. I'll look into that. I've been looking to change up my videos. This might be a good solution. Have a great day
Glad to see that you’re back on ”The Tube”. L O L!
Ha ha. Yes. Basically trying out the 360 degree camera. Hope to be back with more.
Beautiful
Mine is the same way...
Looks similar from your profile picture. Looks great, especially with those enigmatic shades 😎
Your Barber did a magnificent job styling your beard. You look like Royalty!
Ha ha 😁. Maybe an old Anglo-Saxon monarch. My current, shorter style is more like King Charles's great grandfather's. Slightly more recent.
Where’s Sophie ? ❤️
Be like me and don't care what anyone says. Just be yourself and nothing less. Your beard looks wonderful. It took patience and willpower to grow especially in the awkward period in the early stage. I salute you !
You are too kind. Since that video 5 years ago, I have settled on the shorter "King George V" style, which I think looks really smart. Be that as it may, I have got to the stage where, at nearly 70 I feel I should be able to be mildly eccentric without feelings of guilt.
Amen brother!@@earlgreybeard
Great yeard beard
That's an absolutely fantastic barber, trust him he knows what he is doing! I am on my 5th month of my yeard and loving it!
He is a good guy. But time moves on and so has he unfortunately. Thankfully, I was able to find another good guy even closer to home, Then my favourite balm company went out of business, and the makers of my favourite wax changed the formula. Just when you think you've sorted it all ...
God Save The King!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧👑🚢
Amen to that. Doesn't seem a bad old fellow, does he.
Not at all. Almost 90 years after his death his beard style lives on. The Current King has such good genetics for a beard. The Prince of Wales as well.
Every man loves the George V beard look
Iwan, you are my friend for life 😁
Thank You, are you on Insta? I'd gladly follow you.
@@iwanevans1404 Sadly, no. I kept this series as a vlog of my year growing the beard. Never expected this much interest. Now that the beard is firmly King George, I have faded back into anonymity. I do have some plans for more content, but probably not much about beards.
I will give the vlog of the beard growth a watch asap. I'm currently 21 and I have a thick full beard. Thou is Blessed by the god. Might give the George V look a go. Or The Captain EJ Smith look
@@iwanevans1404 Thing is, if you just grow it out, you can spot points along the way that you like.
everything looks better with a beard! u rockin that smoking cap!
Ha ha. Thanks. Owing to the cost of power now, I am wearing that cap a lot!
I wish I had of said to myself about growing a yeard but I didn't one day I just stopped shaving but the problem I've had is I was trimming it not too good and I was growing the neck but cut it back and really regret but it is just hair and can grow again love your channel
Gr8 looking beard my friend really looks good and suits you
Thanks Simon. That was a little while ago now, and I have since gone rather shorter. But the whole experience was definitely life changing.
I bet thank you
Your beard looks great, I have had a very patchy beard and never grew it out, until I finally decided to go on a shaving strike and after 6 months, to my surprise, it all filled in, so guys who think they can't grow a beard, give it 6 to 8 months growth, don't trim any of it, especially the side burns. You'll be surprised
That is the real benefit of a 'yeard challenge'. You never know what you will end up with after 12 months, and it is often a pleasant surprise. Well done!
Barbers always say, "let it grow" but with this barber she explains why? Very encouraging for beard growers with strained patience.
So my mother keeps telling me.
Whether that's a good thing depends on how old you are now of course. I am guessing you can't be in your late sixties like me?
@@earlgreybeard I'm 46. I have a really week jaw structure and it really suits me even if it is grey. I like it so sorry mam 😄
@@lexingtonlad5745 That's the spirit!
Well done
Thank-you my lord 😁
Thats your best beard length. Beard game is killing it!
Hi James. Yes, I seem to have settled on this as my favourite look.
Great video! Very cool to meet some of the people out there. I'm sure the acoustics are pretty awesome in those locations. Thanks for sharing! 🙂🎶
I certainly didn't need to add much reverb 😁
Glad to see you back!
And I wasn't even talking about beards 😀. Thank-you my friend.
You sure that isn’t Paddington Bear?
Jack is strictly on the old side for Paddington. Salty sea bear and all that. Besides, we use the Midland mainline. Our bears are named after St Pancras, patron saint of bears 😁
Good to hear from you after a while. Stunning views.
Thanks Jim. I am putting together a longer piece with some of the music from the event.
I switched this shampoo to my head it has more ingredients for head hair and dries my beard out way too much.
As always... still an amazing beard. Glad to see you making content.
Ha ha. Who cares about the castle, so long as the beard looks good 🤣. Thanks Cory. I will see about adding some more content.
Good to see you! Great footage, my Friend!
Thanks Kevin. Worth posting the odd video to hear from old friends 😁
What a beautiful place!
Having medieval music's playing everywhere you go makes it really special.
PS. The HD version is still uploading, so you will have just seen the low-def footage.
Majestic beard, just need to trim the tash going forward.
Thanks Tony. Obviously, things have moved on a bit since I filmed this. I have gone for a shorter beard, but kept the big moustache. I just have any scraggy ends trimmed, with a small trim over the mouth to make eating easier, whilst largely keeping the 'walrus' impression intact.
How are things for you. Seen your videos. Seems like i become "Addicted".
Hi Flavio. I am OK thanks. Currently with my King George V / Tsar Nicholas II beard. I do have some videos coming up, but I think it unlikely that I will make many beard videos. Music and philosophy are more likely, with the odd special on drones and videography. Best wishes, Raymond.
@@earlgreybeard How much can one say about beards, right? LOL. I'm also into music. I'm learning to play acoustic guitar. Gods speed!
Thanks for the tips. Have you tried a hot comb?
Can't say I have, no. Would you recommend one?
@@earlgreybeard Yes! Yes! Yes!
