Thank you for sharing. I feel like you explain plant care like a doctor would. In depth and easy to understand. My whole plant care has gone from 0 to 100 after reading your book. My plants are thriving.
Really anyone can understand you . Can't believe how simple you make it to be understandable

You noted about taking a pole/stick and poking around the soil. I have done this and find that the soil will dry out much quicker b/c I am giving the soil aeration, which has definitely helped when I have gone and added too much water and the soil is soupy wet and to break up the compaction with my soil. I try to use more pumice/perlite too. Thanks for the video. It is very helpful. I need to get one of those light meters too.
Why am I just now learning about this? I always thought root rot was from too much water, and now I realize the soil I'm using is probably not airy enough. Thank you so much!
If, despite my usual care, I find one of my plant's soil stays a little too wet for too long, I'll poke holes in the side of the plastic nursery pot, leave it out of its cache-pot and put it in a brighter location. Once it's recovered and doing OK I'll usually repot into a better draining soil mix. I find that this add airflow and stimulates the plant to use up the water quicker so the roots aren't damaged as a result!
Thank you for this detailed easy explanation. Since lockdown I bought some plants and I'm trying at plant mom life again. 6 of my plants are thriving but 2 are not doing well. I'm really hoping to save them
Love all your videos! Thanks for your hard work uploading content and helping me! I checked out your website and loved it. As I learn more from you I have realised I am so lucky that I live in an apartment with really good light and big windows and big balconies!
My apologies - I don't hear anything and I've put my audio through a noise reduction filter. Is there any point where you can say it is loudest - I can see if I can detect it.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! You make things so clear! I have my plants sitting directly in front of an east facing window with the blinds raised, however there's a covered patio right outside the windows. I purchased a three-way meter and for light it registers 0. Are my plants getting proper lighting even though the meter says 0? BTW...It only moves when I go outside🤷🏾♀️
I bought the same three way meter just to test it - it really doesn't work for light. A phone app would work better but a dedicated light meter device would be best. I recently put up an article listing light requirements for lots of plants that need "bright indirect light" here: www.houseplantjournal.com/home/bright-indirect-light-requirements-by-plant
Oh my fucking god. I was just poking the drainage holes of my pots because I'd read that overwatering causes oxygen to be depleted(?) from the soil. I can't believe that was actually a thing that can help
You are correct in your complete information. However, the simple answer is OVERWATERING. You can really have good open mixed mixture soil bright light and yet if you water too much the roots will rot. Take my final extreme example CACTI........You KNOW if you water them too much in a pot even with cacti soil and a good mixture and plenty light they will still develop root rot and die. So the easiest answer for the average plant-keeper is yes your soil should be correct for that plant and the light should be correct however, don't overwater.
There are always different points of emphasis. Your "simple answer" is what I described at 4:00 in this video. People have read plenty of advice about strategies of watering. It is light they have difficulty understanding (specifically when the instruction is "bright indirect light").
Oh my gosh. To your right, the large leaf 'philodendron'? I rescued a plant last fall that looks exactly like yours, but mine had only one leaf. I took it home, put it on my northeast windowsill. Takes forever for a new leaf to uncurl, but a 4th leaf is sloooowly opening up. In my search, I came upon a 'blushing philo.' which suggested bright light, so I put her (Philis) outside. I'm not so sure, tho. What type of philodendron Is yours? Mine doesn't really look like a blushing philo. -- it's mostly green. Is it? Thanks for your videos. I am really enjoying The New Plant Parent - learning at lot.
I also rescued a few philos in recent weeks and they are blowing up. They didn't like being blasted with sunshine and are doing waaaay better inside, at hip level near a panoramic window. Just like he is saying here.
There's a really high pitched mosquito tone in the background of this video. Super loud if you can hear it. Makes the video kinda unwatchable. :/ I'll come back in ten years.

All good practices but light is the foundation :)
Thanks for explaining this so well that it's easy to understand.
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful - Happy Growing!
So glad I found your channel. I am a new plant parent and I find so many houseplant channels highly annoying. So, thank you!

Yes! Apartments can have some of the best views of the sky!
Finally I understand! I was always so paranoid about overwatering but never considered the other factors!
Glad to have discovered this channel! Very informative and you get to understand the topic on a deeper level. Thumbs up!
I love you get direct to the point. Great teacher!
Just purchased your book! Can't wait to dive in!
Always informative. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome!
Thank you for another awesomely educational video! 💚✨
You're very welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful! Happy Growing!
thanks for this! just found 2 of my plants not doing good and i suspect they are staying wet for longer. will move them closer to the window now!
I love the meta effect. So cool
Well this is helpful!! Thank you!!
is it just me or is there a really high pitch in the background of this video?
My apologies - I don't hear anything and I've put my audio through a noise reduction filter. Is there any point where you can say it is loudest - I can see if I can detect it.
@@HousePlantJournal - It's consistent throughout. Probably only obvious to those of us who are sensitive to TV whine.
My dog is barking
I checked the frequency sweep. And the ringing noise is about 16000hz. It's extremely loud on a phone speaker

That ending 🤣👌
Watering once a week, can it cause weak roots.

Nice explanations. You are good .I can’t stand the teenie hipster cuttings collector videos anymore.

What is this ear piercing screeching noise?
