No, he's not really old James Bond and codename theory is bullshit anyway. But still... It just makes awesome viewing experience if you think that's the original 60's JB.
You bring up a really good point that I never thought of before, Calvin. When it comes to the first three “Mission: Impossible” movies (as well as the sixth), I can immediately think of the villain; from the person that played them to what their character name was. However, when it comes to the fourth and fifth, I can’t at all. I can’t even picture what they look like in my mind.
dont listen to him Calvin... Solomon Lane is grandly great and epic.. he's Ethan' Riddler... hes so cold calculous callous chilling and transformative and mesmerizing and easily the best villain so far. agree with your opinion on fourth villain, he was weak, but the ONL weak end of GP.!!!!!!!!
Did you catch the part where he runs into the blonde haired henchman from the first movie, the one who works for Max? Hint- not the last time Max is referenced in one of these movies.
Great work, Calvin! Glad to see you branching out more! Brad Bird, of course, directed The Incredibles, which has a lot of "spy story" in its DNA...I'm gonna recommend you review 2008's "Get Smart" a spy comedy that actually also works as a pretty well-made action film, too!
Ghost Protocol really made this series what it should have been from the beginning. In MI:1 I was immediately upset when they killed off everyone on the team. I mean, that's what MI is all about, a TEAM. In GP I like the use of the music. It is just like the 60's TV series and it really helped me through some hard times this movie did have as you mentioned. This was my favorite (favourite) movie of the series and as always Cal, you're spot on in your review. Wish I had found you years ago.
You know I need to get back into Mission impossible.. I remember seeing the 3rd one in theatres I liked it a lot, I saw Ghost Protocol and I really enjoyed it... after that what is there now 2 more mission impossibles, one of these days I’ll watch those 2. Credit to Tom cruise he’s really ramping up his movies top gun 2 will be awesome
The original film was part of that 90s/00s trend of doing movie adaptations of old TV shows. It was trying to evoke the old show, but also be unpredictable. 2 was trying to establish a feel for a film franchise, but hit all of the wrong notes. 3 tried to reestablish the brand, and found the basic components that make these films work. GP took that formula from 3 and improved it. This film is what has solidified MI as a film franchise. If this film had failed I'd have to think that MI was done. I'm really surprised that the series was given another go at it. MI3 wasn't a massive financial success, but it definitely was received much better than MI2. I guess this film getting green-lit (as well as MI3) goes to show how much influence Tom Cruise really has, bat-shit crazy or not.
not you .. haven’t seen them as they’re not my cup of tea but many of my friends like them fast and furious sequels! The 6th n 7th Rock movies are surprising good compared to movies 2-5.
@@helgaratbone1691 Agreed. There sort of lesser mission impossible films but the later entries are a lot of stupid fun once they get a good formula [similar to this movie-3 acts and 3 set pieces]
I used this movie to introduce a Bond fan friend of mine to the MI series. It did the trick! (I had to explain a bit about how Mission Impossible works and who Benji is/Ethan's wife, but he was able to jump in and enjoy it)
I've recently watched this entire series and it's brilliant. I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to seeing the last few but better late than never. Just wait until you get to Fallout. It's easily of the best modern action films!
8:08 I can answer that question, Henry Czerny is an IMF liaison from the C.I.A., Anthony Hopkins is just a contact in Spain, Fishburne is an IMF station chief, but Tom Wilkinson is the man who throughout the TV show and the movies has been mentioned as the real MAN IN CHARGE of all I.M.F. operations.
So to try explain the four different boss characters Cruise has in the first four movies; Kittridge is suppose to be the Director of the IMF, Hopkins character is just a mission commander if you look at the credits, never said on screen, and Fishburne's character is also the IMF director. The guy in Ghost Protocol might be something higher the IMF director because Secretary is the US government title for most minister level people or maybe just inconsistent naming of positions, take your pick.
Ghost Protocol is pretty great, since this film every MI film has been really good. The level of consistency is fantastic and I wish the Bond series could be as consistent as the MI series is now. Looking forward to your MI: Fallout review, that was a blast to watch.
To me, Michael nyqvist can be an interesting villain. Don't quote me on this. But in the first John wick movie, he was given room to improve and have fun with his character and it's a amazing performance. I just feel like he was wasted in this film and not given much to work off on to be interesting. I'm sad I won't be able to see more from him cause he's a great actor.
Great as always, Calvin! I adore Brad Bird's Pixar work, but I was quite nervous when they announced him as the director. Like, really, him? So glad it worked out, and his influence is felt! I'd say this is the 'lightest' of the M:I films, with the humour more veering towards slapstick, but it works. I LOVE Lea Seydoux in this film, and think she's better here than in Spectre. Totally agree on the villain and the climactic action sequence: I remember actually getting bored when I saw the car park fight in cinemas. Jeremy Renner comes more into his own in the next film, much more dry wit. And that Burj Khalifa scene... Boy, jaw dropping. Side note: that ending skit... I'm actually 100% seriously in (light) pain from laughing! That was amazing!
I still think Ghost Protocol is the best in the franchise. not even Fallout could top of it. the cinematography, the direction, the cast, the locations, the stunts. everything was on point. what's makes Ghost Protocol even more special than the others is that, this movie showed the vulnerability of these characters.. for the first time ever, they were on their own. no matter what they do, everything was just going bad. that was the extreme point of this movie. Ghost Protocol is probably a modern action classic. it should be consider with the likes of Mad Max and John Wick Edit: also Hats off to Brad Bird for giving us one of the best modern action movies. this was his first feature movie, before this, he was only for making kiddy animations Lol. I mean can you imagine someone who only made kiddo animations in his whole life, gone to make this? xD
@@vishalnarayanasamy8767 yeah definitely. hell, if you take out the team aspect from Ghost Protocol and focus soly on Ethan then it will basically become a bond movie, that's how much the tone resemble to it
Funny story: This movie features a Finnish actor. The role of Hendricks' henchman "Wistrom" is played by Finnish guy called Samuli Edelmann. It's not very usual for Finnish actors to get roles in big Hollywood movies, Mr. Edelmann is a big name in our film industry and has starred in many of our most famous films. So when we found out that he is gonna be in the new Mission Impossible movie, it was a VERY big deal here. Basically half of the people that saw the movie here, were watching it only to see our guy in a big role. Hendricks was played by Nyqvist (RIP), who happened to be Swedish, so the villainous roles were done in neighbourly Swedish-Finnish co-operation. We have a saying here when Finland is mentioned outside its borders, so "Torille".
I suppose one good(-ish) thing about the global pandemic is that Calvin might get through all the Mission: Impossible films before "No Time To Die" comes out. Because after "Ghost Protocol", it really seems like Bond and M:I start poaching ideas from each other.
I always felt that this film is where the series finally turned around for me. It's really odd to think too, because I wouldn't at all class this as a reboot, but there is argument to be had on whether you could just... watch the original film and then just start with this one? It's so seperate from the original films, to the point where it almost feels like an entirely new series - crazy when you consider there's less of a gap between this and the previous one than 2 & 3! Which felt very much like a continuation. Ghost Protocol is where stuff really picks up for me! I've always thought it was almost Die Another Day done right, in terms of outlandish gadgets balanced with realism. Glad you're enjoying these Calvin! Look forward to the next one
Ah, so M:I dodges the fourth film curse? Good for it! Not many film franchises can say their fourth entry is good, often it’s the series’ nadir. Such series to fall victim include: James Bond, The Terminator, Alien, X-Men, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Batman, Toy Story...
Calvin Dyson I’d take A:R over ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant’ for sure. The thing that always bothered me about ‘Resurrection’ was how brown the colour scheme was, it always looked to me like they stained the film negatives with a tea bag.
It depends on the previous movies. Friday the 13th best film is the fourth one, but the previous 3 films aren’t good movies, same thing with Fast 5, but that’s the fifth film. Shrek Forever After, Scream 4, Mad Max Fury Road, Toy Story 4 and Star Trek 4 are other great examples.
Ghost Protocol is great for sure, but I'm not sure if the series actually gets even better after this one. Let's just say that GP, Rogue Nation and Fallout together from an awesome second trilogy in the series.
Hi Calvin . I know u wanted to find out why Sean Connery did a voice over for the From Russia With Love game and I have the answer for you . Number 1 : From Russia With Love was his favourite bond film and number 2 : his grandchildren liked video games . The kids would be playing as their grandad tho that would be cool fun and weird
Christmas 2018 my wife bought me the whole TV series of Mission Impossible. Heroes of my tv youth with that goosebumps Lalo Shifrin Theme. To you Calvin - better than the JB Theme. Christmas 2019 my wife got worse and gave me the whole TV Series of "The avengers". Again with a wonderful Theme music. MI films are the next to Bond. Last 3 are even better than the last 2 Bonds.
The false floor/room trick is lifted from an episode of the television series. The films have progressively improved by getting closer and closer to the "team" concept of the television show as well as more "show, don't tell" philosophy since it is a visual medium, unlike radio. On that topic, the tv show won't suit the taste of those who hate to pay attention. If you weren't back from the bathroom or making a sandwich by the end of the commercial break, you risked not *seeing* a vital plot point and could be lost for the rest of the episode. It is definitely not a show for those who are used to having the tv play in the background whilst they do other things around the house.
Recent interviews with 'Light the Fuse' the mission impossible podcast have disclosed a lot of behind the scenes info for this film: *Various drafts of the script had Harrison Ford in mind for the villain and Gene Hackman for the IMF Secretary which is interesting given how you review notes that these characters don't stand out with the actors they ended up with [though Michael Nyqvist was great as the villain in the first John Wick]. *Vanessa Redgrave was also due to return [hence why the heavy returned for this film] but her $1 million fee for the cameo was rejected. *Cruise had to take a lower salary for this film due to the under-performance of Knight and Day. * They killed the IMF Secretary because the original plan was for Tom Cruise's Ethan to take the role and be 'kicked up stairs' even during shooting though Cruise managed to avoid that and remain the team leader [similar to how his role in Top Gun 2 when it was planned around this time was as a minor role/cameo before he got the lead role back].
@@calvindyson I might be in the minority here. And, this may be an unpopular opinion. But... As far as Timothy Dalton Bond movies, I think *The Living Daylights* had a better, more iconic soundtrack (techno-style variations Notwithstanding), but I think *Licence to Kill* (besides one scene at the beginning of TLD) had a better plot. It felt more personal and personable Bond, and I understood what was going on better in LTK than Living Daylights. The 2 1/2 Bond girls aren't exactly anything to write home about. LTK's Bond girl problem is that it never settled on one for longer than 10 minutes.
highly recommend the TV series, it was awesome, epic cold war mind games, a lot of trick that is still feels mind-blowing watching today, featuring Steven Hill(1st season only), Martin Landau(season 1-3), Leonard Nimoy(season 4-5), Peter Graves(the original Jim Phelps since 2nd season, not a bad guy at all)
I hate to be the guy who says “the Bond films have really been replaced with mission impossible these days” but I rewatched 3-6 the other day and you know... it’s kind of true I feel like mi3 and mi4 are both the same level as most bond films but mi5 is on the same level as For your eyes only, spy who loved me, and twine for me. Mi6 though is possibly my favourite action movie of all time.
Yeah she was better here then her character in bond movie despite being in two movies. Kinda sad that she was killed mid movie, she would have been a great secondary villain.
Kinda agreed on the Villain. Michael Nyqvist was a talented Actor (RIP, by the way) and he did a good job elsewhere... not that his performance is *bad* in Ghost Protocol, but he didn't leave much of an impact because he really didn't appear all that often. He lacked presence in the Story, and in the few Scenes he did appear in, he played it calm and soft-spoken, kind of like Christoph Waltz as Blofeld. Jon Voight also was absent for much of the first movie, but he really did a lot with what Screentime he had, by comparsion. To his Credit, though, Nyqvist had a certain physicality and was a tough villain for Ethan to go up against. What Nyqvist pulled off well with Hendricks was playing a guy with a *lot* of experience, with a sharp mind but whose body was at least a decade past its prime. He didn't look like he could pose a challenge to Ethan hand-to-hand but still dealt not insigfificant damage. And I think he had one, albeit brief, memorable moment: That defiant grin before he jumped to his Death was the face of someone utterly dedicated to his mad vision.

No, he's not really old James Bond and codename theory is bullshit anyway. But still... It just makes awesome viewing experience if you think that's the original 60's JB.
Even more interesting is the Dirk Pitt novel, Night Probe! whose antagonist is strongly hinted at being an aged James Bond with a different name.
Jack Fitzpatrick ‘to believe the theory’ . How can anybody possibly believe something that’s been made up by a bunch of fan nerds?
Josh Holloway is the Emilio Estevez of this installment.
Glad to see you finally enjoying an MI film!
Did you catch the part where he runs into the blonde haired henchman from the first movie, the one who works for Max?
Hint- not the last time Max is referenced in one of these movies.
This is the first time in the films the team dynamic so central to the TV series is given its time to shine.
The climbing the hotel window scene is one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen, especially in IMAX. 😱😬
The last three MI films are better than the last three Bond films.
Definitely Spectre and Quantum, idk about Skyfall though.
I can't wait for the next one! Hurry and review MI: Rogue Nation!
Cant wait for you to do the next one. Its where it surpasses James Bond as we get to see Spectre done RIGHT. And then The follow up is even BETTER
How many other film series can you say got better from the 4th film onwards?
not you .. haven’t seen them as they’re not my cup of tea but many of my friends like them fast and furious sequels! The 6th n 7th Rock movies are surprising good compared to movies 2-5.
Mad Max *crosses fingers*
@@helgaratbone1691 Agreed. There sort of lesser mission impossible films but the later entries are a lot of stupid fun once they get a good formula [similar to this movie-3 acts and 3 set pieces]
Harry Potter stayed very consistently good in my opinion.
Fast and furious got way better at number 5
Cant wait for your review on Fallout!
One of the best action films of the 2010s.
Change my mind.
Everything you have asked for shows up in the next two. In for a treat...
I used this movie to introduce a Bond fan friend of mine to the MI series.
It did the trick!
(I had to explain a bit about how Mission Impossible works and who Benji is/Ethan's wife, but he was able to jump in and enjoy it)
Hope you’re well and safe, Calvin! Im looking forward to future reviews on more Bond games, and possibly even the Heineken ads 😅
Thanks, Naoto! I'm still well and safe thanks, I hope you are well and healthy too! :) I can't wait to get to more game reviews!
I've recently watched this entire series and it's brilliant. I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to seeing the last few but better late than never. Just wait until you get to Fallout. It's easily of the best modern action films!
Michael Nyqvist here vs. John Wick is like night & day. He totally proves that he can be a memorable villain in that one.
8:08 I can answer that question, Henry Czerny is an IMF liaison from the C.I.A., Anthony Hopkins is just a contact in Spain, Fishburne is an IMF station chief, but Tom Wilkinson is the man who throughout the TV show and the movies has been mentioned as the real MAN IN CHARGE of all I.M.F. operations.
Tom Hanks in a Mission Impossible film? Great idea Calvin!
Wait until you get to the next two as well, they keep improving even more
I've been trying to find your MI3 review but can't seem to track it down...
Nice bit of symmetry with Robert Elswit who was DOP on TND also lensing MI:4 and having to film another inventive sequence in a car park!
They won’t have they’re climax problem fixed until 6 but it’s worth the wait
First thought about this video: Did he just say ''Good evening, Mr. Spy fans''?
I still think Ghost Protocol is the best in the franchise. not even Fallout could top of it. the cinematography, the direction, the cast, the locations, the stunts. everything was on point.
what's makes Ghost Protocol even more special than the others is that, this movie showed the vulnerability of these characters.. for the first time ever, they were on their own. no matter what they do, everything was just going bad. that was the extreme point of this movie.
Ghost Protocol is probably a modern action classic. it should be consider with the likes of Mad Max and John Wick
Edit: also Hats off to Brad Bird for giving us one of the best modern action movies. this was his first feature movie, before this, he was only for making kiddy animations Lol. I mean can you imagine someone who only made kiddo animations in his whole life, gone to make this? xD
Do you think Brad Bird should direct a James Bond movie
A lot of people give M:I-2 a lot of flak, but I love that one! And, yes the series has gotten better and better since M:I-3.
I'm looking forward to your review of "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" - my fave installment of my fave film series.
The first Mission Impossible was always my favourite right up until Fallout.
Rogue Nation is actually my favorite, but Fallout has the best climax in the series.
Can’t believe more people saw MI2 over MI3 and Ghost Protocal🤯🤯🤯
I prefer the climax of 5 to 4, but I’m not sure I would call it “bigger,” exactly. But #6 (Fallout) goes about as big as any movie I’ve seen!
Fallout is absolute bollocks, though. Hell, even The Mummy was better than that!
@@SpaceCattttt No way, man!
Indeed! Though, I must admit to having a real soft spot for Alien: Resurrection...
Calvin Dyson I’d take A:R over ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant’ for sure.
The thing that always bothered me about ‘Resurrection’ was how brown the colour scheme was, it always looked to me like they stained the film negatives with a tea bag.
@eating sugar no papai loved toy story 4! then again, i also enjoy alien resurrection, thunderball and crystal skull :P
Harsh. I really like Thunderball and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!
Form, not from.
They paid him enough money, anything else is bullshit.
4 5 and 6 are so good, I honestly can't pick which one I like most.
This is still my favorite of MI films. Good start to finish!
If you want to see Michael Nyqvist in John Wick as a good villain
Honestly the M vs IMF secretary is basically the temporary nature of us government jobs XD
Definitely better than the first three, and my personal favorite of the series.
4 is the best one.5 has a great car chase. 6 is an absolute action master class.
Part II was a John Woo film...therefore it's better if you just forget about it.
I have to say this is my favorite out of the 6
Tom Cruise is bugfuck insane but it's hard to hate him because he's so damned good at what he does.
Recent interviews with 'Light the Fuse' the mission impossible podcast have disclosed a lot of behind the scenes info for this film:
*Various drafts of the script had Harrison Ford in mind for the villain and Gene Hackman for the IMF Secretary which is interesting given how you review notes that these characters don't stand out with the actors they ended up with [though Michael Nyqvist was great as the villain in the first John Wick].
Definitely my favourite M:I film since the second one.
What has the world come down to if Calvin starts enjoying Tom Cruise movies ? :o soon he’ll even take a liking to Another Way to Die !!!
Almost as crazy as me finally starting to enjoy Licence to Kill!
@@calvindyson
I might be in the minority here.
Just bedsheets I have a Dalton Simon skinner body pillow.
1. Fallout
2. Ghost Protocol
3. M:I 2
4. Rogue Nation
5. M:I 1
6. M:I 3
I see you like the Mission: Impossible movies as well.
Everything is pre-planned in animation, just like the framing of Krusty the Klown! Brad Bird's debut.
highly recommend the TV series, it was awesome, epic cold war mind games, a lot of trick that is still feels mind-blowing watching today, featuring Steven Hill(1st season only), Martin Landau(season 1-3), Leonard Nimoy(season 4-5), Peter Graves(the original Jim Phelps since 2nd season, not a bad guy at all)
Your issue with he ending is gonna get fixed when they add a film noir chase through London, suicide bombers and nukes into the picture
I jokingly commented about the next one being in space and now apparently that might happen. Nip these films in the bud.
It’s an amazing movie with great set pieces and action sequences
Just take a good stiff drink every time you hear the word ‘disavowed’ ...you will feel no pain...
What's he got to be nervous about? If he slips and falls or the rope breaks the space ship will just swoop down and save him.
My fav of the whole series
I always wished ‘Josh’ from Lost was in the film more.
Lea Seydoux was so good in this movie
Yeah she was better here then her character in bond movie despite being in two movies. Kinda sad that she was killed mid movie, she would have been a great secondary villain.
Calvin, ya gotta do Man From Uncle, for so many obvious reasons....!
Brad Bird directed Iron Giant, Ratatouille & The Incredibles.
