    Gavin, your tips helped me on the job today. I proposed to my boss about livecasting a news conference on wildfires in our area, and I used my Pentax K-3 as my camera. I had thought about before just sending a live view to the streaming software, but after your video I put the camera in video mode so the computer would have a full-HD stream in 16:9 aspect ratio to start in. It exceeded expectations and the funny part is there were four to five TV crews there, yet the guy from the newspaper with a DSLR, a laptop, wireless lav mic and OBS software was the only one broadcasting live. Thank you again sir for this and all the great tutorials you put out.

    Found this really interesting and helpful, as a photographer I’m not very knowledgeable about anything video. So a film for beginners about using a mirrorless (or DSLR) camera for video would be great 👍🏻

    Strong suggestion: when using a mirrorless camera or DSLR as a webcam, use a Dummy Battery instead of connecting external power while there's an internal battery in the camera.
    This will massively reduce the chance of the camera overheating.

    Hello Gavin, thanks for all the guidance in the video. Just wondered which led panel you are using for the background lighting? Also how are you getting the video to appear on the laptop (OBS or similar) ? Kind regards Tony

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey  29 днів тому

      The LED panel is the Neewer 530PRO RGB. I was using the Camera app that's built into Windows 10

      @@mickeyreyes3189 Sounds like a software is flipping the incoming video. Hopefully whichever software you're using will have a "mirror video" toggle somewhere.

      There are many solutions depending on your overall needs. One solution I myself like is getting any of the "Atomos" video recorders. Very little setup required.

    Can you do this with a Nikon D700?

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 29 днів тому +1

      You'll have to read the fine manuals. Nikon have a free webcam utility app that works with specific cameras. As the D700 is quite old - I don't know [1]. You will need to be able to set it to video mode or LiveView to begin with.
      My Z 8 has two USB ports: one for data and one for power, so the USB problem that Gavin describes has been solved here. I would not bother to try HDMI in my case. Nikons that run off e.g. an EN-EL15[ ,a,b,c] battery can be run off external power if you use a dummy EN-EL15 that connects to a power adapter. That dummy battery maybe can connect to a powerbank or an AC adapter.
      If you can tether the D700 into your computer then I would think your chances of getting this to work are a bit bigger. (Nikon have the free "NX Tether" app for that [2].)
      The Webcam Utility turns the Nikon camera into a virtual camera vis-a-vis the video conference app [3].
      While chances with the D700 seem slim, I wonder about the Hoey situation. They use a "camera & audio switch device" ("the switch") for switching between cameras. One of the ladies in the studio presses the buttons for the switches to happen. Gavin may have wanted to demonstrate the simple situation of a home PC/Mac that feeds much better video from a serious camera and microphone, but I guess he could have plugged the OM camera into "the switch" alternatively.
      [1] the download page for the Webcam Utility lists supported cameras and the D700 is not on that list. downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/220.html
      [2] the NX Tether download page lists supported cameras and here the D700 also is not listed. downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/256.html
      [3] Nikon tested their webcam app with the following 3rd party conference apps: Microsoft Teams, Skype, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Google Meet
