"Aliens" Sulaco Model final paint

- This is a video slideshow of the final stage of adding extra detail and painting of the Halcyon Sulaco model kit. Sorry, I did not shoot video of this build. I actually built the model itself over 25 years ago and just now decided to finish with it's paint job after sitting on a shelf.

Excellent job and attention to detail! What's interesting for me is to see that the original model is not as dark or blueish as I thought it was. It was just the reflected blue light they used in the environment when filming it.

Excellent Job ! Really like the patchwork panel painting on the hull. The only thing more you could detail was boring out the muzzles on the upper and lower cannons. I did that on the Star Wars B-Wing with a small tool used for repairing watches and it got a prize. I have this model, but it's tucked away with my other treasures from the 90's.

I have this same kit as well but I was just 20 yrs old when I got it back in 92 I think & never saw the making of Aliens & I always thought the Sulco in the movie Was painted army dark Olive green lol so that’s the color I used to paint my kit & I used the white decal letters & my kit looked just like what I saw in the movie but then I find out the ship was actually gray lol 😝 well I like my models to match what I see on TV so I’m leaving it army green...but I love how you used extra plastic parts to make your kit look more like the actual movie prop & that I will use on my kit thank you for the idea 💡

I like what you did with the kit, great job! I remember when these kits came out, the model shop I went to had them all. I was deciding which ones to get. The Alien w/Egg and The APC were a no brainer, the Escape pod was high on the list along with the drop ship. When I looked a the Sulaco the owner of the shop, who was big on up selling, shook his head and said he had already put that kit together and hated it. He said it was a badly designed kit. So I have all the other kits but not that one. Oh, and the Space Jockey, I never picked up.

Total fan of your work. Would have been neat to put in a LED for the ships drive but I'm not complaining especially after seeing all the skill you have with your other projects.
Thanks. Cause I built it 25 years ago, LEDs were never a consideration for me. And even in the movie there's no engine light. In fact, no lighting anywhere for whatever reason. Had I have built it now, I may have tried something.

I want to build one of these, but as stated in the colonial marine technical manual, they were eventually going to be decommissioned, where the armour and armament would be removed as they will be sold to the merchant fleet. That’s the version I’d like to build.
Get one and modify it.

In the film Aliens, the Sulaco was only detailed on the right side, because it was only filmed from that side.
Yep. Just like only half the Titanic was built. And actually, the Star Destroyer in Star Wars as well

My one gripe was lack of detail on that kit. Matter of fact that was an issue on all the Halcyon kits back then. I opened one up in the early 90s, and although it was a decent kit it needed work. Sadly my skills back then sucked.
I'd like to restart my hobby (I like the same kind of models you do). I quit the hobby because I couldn't stand the cellulose thinner for the Humbrol enamel paints (I'm talking about headaches that lasted for days).
What paints (and thinners) do you use to get these kind of results? Is enamel/thinner a thing of the past?
Thanks for any input you can give me, I'd love to get back into this hobby!
I use both Tamiya and Vajello acrylics. Usually thinned with water for washes and alcohol for airbrushing.

Now that I see your model right next to the movie ship I can now see the suloco is gray I might change my kit to gray instead of the army green I used lol thanks

@@MackMateCom Yes, that is correct. Halcyon did a series of models from Alien 3, and the Sulaco was part of that series. The Sulaco was actually also in Alien 3. I do have my video listed as Aliens and it says Aliens in the beginning, but yes, the actual kit release from Halcyon was marketed as Alien 3. Technically correct on their part I guess.

Impressive modeling. Do you build tanks?
I've only ever built one tank, and that was about 25 years ago. I certainly could do one. Just not one of my things. But it was fun to build the one I did. It was a gift for my brother in law who was a tank mechanic in the military.

Have surgery in a week with a few month recovery period, was thinking of doing some modeling to pass the time.
Anyone ever wondered where the crew of the sulaco is whilst the marines are on LV4 26? Surely there would've been a crew on board.........?
I've wondered that before. Everyone who went down was all there was on that massive ship?
Yet another catastrophic blunder on the part of that doomed-to-fail mission. So much could've been prevented were it not for a standby crew aboard the Sulaco.

Yea. Some older model kits go for crazy amounts, since they're so limited and unavailable now.

You did a beautiful job I have always tried to find love for This space ship but it looks too much like a rifle floating through space and that ruins it for me it looks corny and stupid but you did a great job on the build

Thanks. I did at least try to make it look as good as it good given the quality. I'm pretty happy with the what I got out of it. Would certainly love a studio scale version, or someone like Bandai to release a much higher detailed one.
Well done. It's an ugly spaceship. Looks like a component from a Dyson vacuum. Perhaps that's why it took you 25y to go back to it
