    My thoughts on your entries:
    1. Tales of Berseria did take a little getting used to especially when I was trying to pull off mystic arts with someone other than Velvet but with a little practice, it became more familiar.
    2. Star Ocean Divine Force-I too had my frustrating experiences like with that bloody bird but from that point onward, I started to get better understanding of the battle mechanics as a whole and it also helped that I learned new abilities. Great game.
    3. Xenosaga Trilogy-I get your confusion but honestly, episode 1 wasn’t that bad and it has such a compelling story with amazing soundtrack. Episode 2 was a big letdown; I finished it but once I did, I didn’t want to play it again. Episode 3 redeemed the series and I played that even after finishing main story for the fun of it. I am bummed that this series isn’t getting an HD remaster on current generation consoles; wishing I hadn’t sold my PS2 copies if I had known this would happen.
    4. Kingdom Hearts-A game for kids couldn’t be further from the truth when you consider bosses like Lingering Will or Sephiroth; that’s a one sided massacre for kids and adults alike. The first time I attempted Sephiroth in KH1 with a level 100 Sora equipped with Ultima Keyblade and best equipment, I got my ass handed to me in five seconds.

    Xenogears EP1 was definitely a kick in the face for me when I was still young and inexperienced at JRPGs outside of Final Fantasy. The Gnosis Cathedral ship ramps up the enemy toughness considerably, as does the Encephalon and Song of Nephilim, enabling them to abuse Boosting mercilessly. You have to do the same and play more conservatively to survive. I probably enjoyed the Xenocard mini-game more than the actual combat.
    A problem I'm noticing in a lot of action RPGs lately is that strong attacks lack impact or 'crunch', and with so much happening all at once you can take fatal damage and not know how it happened. Also noticing it in World of Warcraft Classic.

    • @redstratus97
      @redstratus97 Рік тому +1

      Yeah I remember that ship. I would fight one enemy then go back and save and heal then fight the next and repeat. It was a challenge but I made it through. Luckily I also had like 100 healing items in my inventory so that helped too.

    Berseria is a fun game. I started on normal for a bit and then upped it a level for more score/rank points. For one, thegame expects you to explore everything. If you also then fight everything, you tend to stay ahead on levels. It lets you gather extra stuff for the equipment enhancement too. One thing to keep in mind is to set up your move set so you have multiple "finishers" available, so you can use one of the right type/element for that extra damage, and more importantly to get your finishing blows in to keep your gauge up so you can keep yelling "DEVOUR!" and wrecking face.
    Xenosaga: Just don't take the hyper kick with the cyborg guy, you gotta take the aoe thing where he jumps and shoots fireballs out of his foot. Yes I know this sounds crazy but it makes sense if you play the game. While the spaz kick is hilarious to use, it is outclassed by the other move big time, and choices like that can really alter the difficulty in the game. NOTE: if someone would like to give me episode 3 I will gladly take it so I can finally play it.
    FF9: Always steal.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin Рік тому +1

      FF9 was a nice game visually, musically, and storyline wise, but I _hated_ the whole Steal thing. Steal steal steal steal steal. It made boss battles a slog grind where it took 15+ minutes of stealing before you FINALLY got the stuff you wanted. Now, thankfully IIRC, the re-releases allowed you to turn "Always Steal" on, Thank God. But the OG PS1 version? Ugh. It was the thing I hated most about that game.

It was the first JRPG I ever played and even though you are getting close to the end of the game by that point, I had no clue how to approach that battle and how to beat him with those eyes and mouth also attacking you too. It took me many tries but eventually I figured out to use the Princess for healing only and equip her with the heaviest protective gear possible so that you can keep the rest of your party alive and attacking. The final boss wasn’t too bad if you play conservatively. But it will be a 45 min long battle easily.

    I get you with Xenosaga 1. The game is a decent challenge for the most part but still was fun and it’s easy to progress if you play conservatively. But the final two bosses of the game were really hard and you had to be decked out and ready for them as well as get to know their patterns. This took trial and error with lots of deaths but eventually I figured out what to do and when to do it when I happily beat the game. Will always remember the first time I fought Tiamat in 9, and it opened right away with Jet Exhaust, inflicting Heat on everyone, so everyone dies as soon as they try to take an action. And people say Yunalesca using Mega Death in FF 10 is cheap XD.

    • @armorvil
      @armorvil Рік тому +3

      @@WhiteFangofWar Well, Mega Death is cheap in the sense that the solution is not instinctive : you have to realize that you should only cure Zombie when that character has very low HP and desperately needs healing, since Zombie status is what keeps you characters alive. On the other hand you should have had a few encounters with the freeze and heat status in FF9 by the time you reached Tiamat, so you should have noticed how dangerous they are and should have equipped "Body Temp" on everyone to prevent them. I'd understand the struggle if you were too young to figure this out or if it was your first FF though (btw some people never realized that Vivi can cure Heat with Blizzard or Freeze with Fire, same for FF6's freeze). I agree that FF9 is quite hard though so it really deserves its spot on the list. I feel that you can finish FF4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 10 with very few KOs, but your Phoenix Downs or Raise/Arise/Revive will definitely see some use in 9 - I blame the damage randomness that is through the roof in that game (and the random status ailments/instant KO from the last boss can lead to a game-over even with your whole team protected against all abnormalities if the RNG decides to screw you since some of them like Berserk, you can do nothing against).
      I mentionned that FF9 is one of the hardest FFs on some forum a few years back and some smartass was like "you find FF9 hard? lol, it's the easiest actually". So annoying. I still don't know if he was trolling, trying to act superior by playing the usual dumb "pro-gamer" card, or was just insanely lucky in his playthrough; but try to argue against that... It was doubly-annoying since everyone else in the forums just read our "yes it's hard / no it's not" exchange without participating, they just ate chips while enjoying the show of me trying to argue with a troll. The fact no one came to my help still hurts, haha (eventually I stopped giving examples of the game's difficulty when I realized he wasn't willing to listen so I let him have the last word and he probably thought he "won" the argument. My autistic self is still mad about that, lmfao).

    Star Ocean: the Divine Force, since you asked, same you can in most SO games, by crafting weapons and armor that's much, much better than what you can currently buy. I farmed dark matter (from dark material monster in the crashed research ship) and then used alchemy to turn those into moonstones and used these to craft way better gear. So the sword I used had an attack of 947 while the sword you can buy had like 500, same for the armor. At least in the SO games I've played there's always a way to manipulate the crafting system to get gear that's OP compared to where you are in the game.

    I probably would have put Final Fantasy 8 instead of 9. The main issue with 8 is that they changed the way the leveling system worked, so unlike the previous entries, enemies leveled with you. Coupled with the new junction system, any person playing the game for the first time should find the game very challenging until they understand both systems.

    I agree with Kingdom Hearts games being so underestimated, because my nephew once got too attracted by how "Disney" it is (back when he was still 5 to 6-years old) and his dad - my older brother - wasn't aware of the game not being the most kid-friendly Disney game as far as gameplay is concerned. So, when my nephew got himself KH1, he kept getting stuck at various parts of the game, with me frequently having to help him out - leading to me playing the game more than he did. TBH, I really liked KH1, but it's definitely a product of its time with some of its issues.
    Then, my nephew got his eyes on KH2 and obviously wanted to play it. Having played the game before he did, I actually thought "why not troll him to show that KH isn't the easiest Disney game around?". So I did, starting a new file for him to play, but on Proud Mode unbeknownst to him. He ended up getting stuck on one of the early-game bosses, and I still remember seeing him rage from his constant losses. I think he got quite a wake-up call from that.

  • @vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898

    What you say about Berseria is not true. The games is easy, you play on normal and it becomes easier and easier, so you need to up the difficulty, and unlock new higher difficulties because each new step up becomes easy after a few hours. Maybe after three or four difficulty ups it becomes hard, but never hardcore. I concede the last few missions are harder than the rest and you need enough curatives and some grinding, because if you die, you will lose several hours (same as in Arise, super long last dungeon without fast travel other than at the beginning). But, yeah, if you approach a Tales game as though it was a Bayonetta or a Nier game, you will have trouble. Berseria looks like a hack & slash, but a hack & slash it is not. You need to learn the combat and how the attack you make with any of the four face buttons will be different if it was preceded by X, O, Square or Triangle, creating countless variations, but smashing the same buttons won't do it (again, this is not Bayonetta or Nier).
    As for Atelier Ryza, the problem is not the game, it is your approach! if you are a gamer who plays Crap of Tsushima, Far Crap 3, Spider-Crap, Horizon Zero Crap and other open world with crafting mechanics you don't need to learn or even use to finish the game, you will think Atelier is the same, and that's a mistake. Atelier has deep crafting mechanic, that's the focus of the game! I mean, it's called "atelier", right? Then, if you don't engage in depth with the crafting system, you won't get better equipment, and a simple upgrade here marks the difference. It's not like a Silver Sword and then a Silver Sword +1 like most games, no. Here, that simple +1 means you now deal not 25 hp of damage, but 80. Each piece or your equipment that you improve to the next level, is a big jump, not a small irrelevant one.
    Mario games have never been easy. Super Mario Bros, SMB2, SMB3, SM World, Yoshi's Island were hard. Not hardcore. And Mario RPG is not hardcore either, just normal Mario. I don't think anyone would have approached Mario RPG thinking it would have been an easy game.

  • @Dhalin
    @Dhalin Рік тому

    Super Mario RPG is only hard until you get Peach, then the game is a cakewalk. Even if you don't get the Lazy Shell Armor and stick it on her, she still effectively removes any and all challenge with her Group Hug spell. If you give her the Lazy Shell Armor (which does take a little effort to find), you become 100% invincible. Yes, even _CULEX_ can't touch you. It also helps that bosses have limited FP, for example the guy at the end of Seaside Town has limited FP. Just defend and heal through his attacks until he runs out of FP and then beat the crap out of him from complete safety because he has zero normal attacks. Culex is the same way, just let the other 2 die and let him do 1 damage with everything to Peach until him and his crystals are out of FP and then rez the other two and just pound him to death.

The final boss was so damn cheap - you had to keep an s-craft in your back pocket at all times to clear the screen of the little minions he would spawn, and you also had to keep your people with a speed up bonus and immune to Vanish...I think I spent a good 6 hours just on that one enemy.

      @davenhla Рік тому

      Berseria is a blast, the combat sort of works like zersteria in that you have more then one "mode" but it is smoothed out a lot. You need to mix up your skills though because to make it fun you have to basically fight everything and explore everywhere. Trying to "skip a part" will just leave you under leveled. Level in both games is pretty noticeable. Berseria is a long game though if you do explore a lot. Sort of the cliche "grindy" feel. I did a lot of messing around in the "optional" final dungeon so the end fight was an absolute stompfest. This set up a pretty nice newgame+ though. Zesteria's newgame+ to me almost feels like they expect you to do a real newgame+ on the THIRD go through though, no way I could grind enough grade to unlock the stuff I would like to in time for the second go round.
      I just started Arise. So far it is fun, but control early in the game does not feel as polished in combat at berseria did. I am sure it improves, even the tutorial stuff hints at more mechanics in the future so I am sure it grows into a robust system. I only have two characters in the party so it is very early on yet.

    Berseria is no joke if you're breezing through it as quickly as possible. About the last third of the game really expects you to start getting it, even on normal. That final dungeon is so convoluted it made me despise how many encounters I wanted to run away from because I just wanted to get it over with. SCREW THAT THING! One of my go-tos for unexpected difficulty is the Trails series. Not that I would call the system the easiest to grasp in the first place because mid-to-endgame really forces you to start being observant and has far less forgiveness. Haven't gotten to Cold Steel yet, only played through the first one for ~20 hours when the amazing Trails from Zero remaster Durante and The Geofront got to improve with a proper English release, and that's where I'm mid to endgame of, after having played FC, SC and the 3rd, in anticipation of the (Steam, I feel bad for the PS4 players as they don't get Durante's improvements on Falcom's vexing insistence) release of Trails to Azure in the 14th!
    P.S.: Thank you for turning me on to Shining Resonance Refrain Erick! I had it for a few years and like so many others the backlog got the better of it. Now I'm playing it and it's an absolute hidden gem with brilliant writing. I don't mind the fanservice at all and I love how adaptable the dungeon system is- briliant way to give the player to grind, and the game most certainly expects you will grind.

    I would get it if you were a newcomer to the series or something but imo Fire Emblem Sacred Stones just isnt hard if you have played more than 1 or 2 Fe games. You said he cant, but Seth can quite literally solo the whole game and the hardest part about that is making sure no one else enters any battles to make it a true Seth solo run. That aside you get fed plenty of other good units like Vanessa and Cormag plus ephraim is the best lord unit in the Gba trilogy imo (Its a bit harder if you choose Eirikas route I guess). Overall I just dont see Sacred Stones as a hard game unless you wanna put various restrictions on how you play.
