I was hoping that we’d get Rex’s isolated bass track during the solo, seeing that Pantera often kept a true four-piece sound on their tracks without rhythm guitar overdubs. Rex is the glue that keeps the song together while Dime shreds.
One thing I absolutely love about that is, despite having never been so privileged to experience it, they could’ve played a show and had it sound like the recording without backing tracks. Just before recording Rust in Peace, Dave Mustaine actually asked Dime to join Megadeth. And he accepted. But the catch was that he would only join if Vinnie would too. Dime truly was one of the greats. He busted his ass building his chops, instead of building his ability to cover up mistakes in post, like, you know, MOST "metal" artists nowadays. His talent was one of a very raw and visceral nature. That's the key ingredient missing in many bands today. Dime was all heart. Too many musicians today are trying to emulate that character with technology, but it just doesn't work.

I nodded my head and gave 👍 and a incoherent drunken thanks came out. Great guys.

Rip abbot brothers. Had me in tears when you started talking about dimes death. One of the first proper metal bands I ever got into when I was a kid. Shred in peace 🤘
I'll tell you Rick is one of the few musicians I've watched that likes all kinds of music from 1960"s country western to metal to pop. That's why I love his channel......
Both GREAT bands, and I'm pretty picky, when it comes to metal bands. Gojira sound better LIVE, than any band in history. Period. Don't believe me? Go pick any live song of theirs, here on UA-cam. You'll be FLOORED!!!!
I agree with alot that is said here especially gojira and death (as ppl have asked for before) but understand those wouldnt get nearly as many views as metallica, pantera, aic, tool, etc.
I mentioned Harvest because it's the most accesible from the album and it still is a great song with lots of things to analyze. But yes, Bleak too, as well as every song from Blackwater Park.
While you’re at it, you should do an interview with producer Terry Date- and discuss his involvement with the heaviest and most sonically punishing album of all time-Far Beyond Driven
Love this song. I remember the first time I heard Pantera, it was this album that I got in the mail (thanks Columbia House monthly suggestion!). When I got to Regular People it was literally like nothing I had ever heard before and I was hooked.
With all due respect to Dimebag (and that's a LOT), he wouldn't have had the sound he did without EVH to build off of. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Music is progressive, and Dimebag created a unique sound that only he had, but a lot of the roots were in EVH's playing. There's a reason Dime wanted a copy of EVH's guitar.
Did work experience in a record store as a high school kid, they weren’t allowed to pay me, but allowed me to choose an album for free - chose the new release of Vulgar after hearing the first 2seconds of it. Loved it ever since. What quality musicians! Great album.
Dave H ... My sister was married to Darrell`s cousin and I got to meet him and hang out with him in 1984. He gave me a guitar lesson on an old Fender acoustic guitar of a Def Leppard song. I moved to Dallas in 1985 to work and got to see Pantera play in clubs. The first time I saw them play he jumped on top of a table in front of the stage and kicked beers off of it on the opening song, including an entire pitcher of beer. I never forgot the name Pantera after that. He lit a roman candle off my sister`s stove once and "didn`t make it outside in time" so I got to see some of his indoor fireworks antics. Burned holes in the couch, the curtains and the carpet. My sister was pissed!
I was really waiting for hearing drums and bass solo through that part. The fact that they didn't overdub any rhythm guitars there and it grooves like hell makes it an even greater part.
I was about to say the same. Rex is kicking ass here (well, pretty much everywhere else too ;) ), it's such a shame he didn't get mentioned. The bass line here is soooo jazz-driven. By the way - Rex himself has commented this video, did you see it? :)
I like how Rick bean around through all the generations n he has an appreciation for for all “rock” /“metal” he’s not just some arrogant “boomer” who hates anything that isn’t from the 70’s he sees and appreciates the evolution n progression of guitar playing through the decades n genres cause he has a true love for it. Not just a love for “his generation”
Yup! Best riff of the song. Especially the way they do it live.i wish he had done any song other than this one tho. It's probably the simplest, most basic song they have, excluding that solo of course
One thing I love about Vulgar Display of Power is that on several songs, including Walk, the rhythm guitar drops out during the solo and Rex and Vinnie carry the song.
What is crazy to me is that the solo has so much gain and distortion and that usually makes every mistake very audible. Dimebag played so clean you hear absolutely no hidden screw ups at all.
Phil had the most amazing scream/growl voice....you can understand every word. Darryl is a guitar god, vinny is a master drummer (very underrated , in my opinion ) and rex is an amazing bassist! I saw them live once (i was 16) and it was SO AMAZING! the energy was off the charts.
Thank you. Just been discovering Rick Beato and vids like these. All this analysis was great by Beato, but he could easily have taken another 20 minutes to not just break it down but actually say WHY it was great. Not enough of that. And one of those points is Phil's singing. For all of Anselmo's "faults" (or whatever you want to say), it takes something special to do the scream/growl thing AND still be understandable. The vocal delievry was so powerful. What else makes this song great is just that it's an anthem to everyone who is or imagines themselves to be a badass and wants to brush away the pests around them. Almost any teenage boy/young man loves to have that kind of clout. I mean, this song is great for so many reasons and that's why it still gets air time 30 years later.
Walter T we'll leave the last name at that was the yellow black stripped guitar incidence. The guitar was a Kramer. It was broken on stage many times and was rebuilt with dowels and pins. I used to play it as an early teen. My memory tells me the guitar was nicknamed ted? It's been 30 years. Please don't quote me on the name. It's been a while. They were all fun wild and not claiming good manners on Cooper street at UTA. On weekends. Ha ha ha. Anyone from Arlington knows the place. Love the time. It was all passion. And again I can't thank you enough for appreciating all of the music. From classical to rock. Go Rick
Thanks for posting, I hung out after hours w/ the brothers many times. One time we went to their Mom's house in Arlington and did shots of Crown. Dime went into the garage to practice which he had sound proofed, and Vinnie took us back to his room where he had a mixing board that had an early version of The great Southern trend Kill, it was an honor, but as a guitarist at the time I regret not hanging w/ Dime. Your vid brought back memories! THNX!!

Dime and vinnie was like a well oiled machine many many hours playing together no doubt. Greatness like this isn’t exactly built overnight add Phil to the mix and yikes. Those brothers ate and slept metal and music. Phil’s voice was absolutely amazing for this type of music.
Oh dude... my favourite part of his solo is where he "Echo's " from the 2nd fret to the fourteenth on the B string and then goes into his next pattern. I remember reading a Guitar World interview with him and he seemed like the most humblest of people. Stories of him giving his guitars away to people who were down on their luck. Yeah. I compared them to what the STP did to the big 4 of grunge in early 90s.
Even after all these years the Eddie story still gets me. Rock In Paradise forever Eddie, Dime, and big Vin. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us. You enriched so many of our lives🤘
Dime's solo is so crisp and clean in its execution. He just made it sound so effortless. He also had a really unique sound and style.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what many artist do, but I want to see them play what they recorded. I want live to be equal or better than recorded(and that doesn’t necessarily mean the mix, because venues can be difficult).
Rex is so underrated its not even funny.. How the fuck he's managed to exist as overlooked and underrated as he has been is just mind blowing
@@joelmacdonald6994 I saw them 5 times starting with the Cowboys From Hell tour in a small venue that held maybe 200 people. They were always spot on to the record back then. After years of touring Phil's vocals started to get pretty rough but those early tours were amazing.
@@88_TROUBLE_88 yea he's crapped on a ton for not shredding on bass. Yet he had the most musical training and drove every song. He understood his role and executed it perfectly.
Can’t imagine that half that band is gone. Solos by Dime were a huge cut above anything happening at the time. You can tell he drew from so many musical influences to shred a solo with that much musicality going on.
I'm a grown ass man. I still get all teary talking Dimebag. RIP Dime. Thanks Rick for the great episode.
Amen brother.
Pantera one night, Fleetwood Mac another, the Doors, classical... Rick, the obvious work you put into this channel, and the straight-up enjoyment factor, are off the charts! You are a master. Thank you.
Thanks again! I'm tubin' out on Rick this weekend and gonna show some support too. Keep it up!
That's a touching twist I never knew about Eddie Van Halen-a rarity, but an insanely cool move by him.
I wanna thumbs-up ya, but you're at 69 likes.
Love “Vulgar display of power”, such an energetic, driving, pumping, fun album! I’m normally a prog and jazz-fusion guy, but never embarrassed to say I love this album and the late Abbott brothers in particular!
Same here! I'm into Herbie Hancock but love Pantera. We should be friends or something.
Interested if you guys ever became "friends", are still out there or if y'all died from covert 18 or some ish... ✌️👽🧘🐂🛸
I know. The whole Pantera catalog is amazing. Cowboys, Vulgar, Driven, and Trendkill.
Just before recording Rust in Peace, Dave Mustaine actually asked Dime to join Megadeth. And he accepted.
But the catch was that he would only join if Vinnie would too. Megadeth actually needed a drummer too, but Dave had just hired Nick Menza for the job, so the deal fell flat.
I can't imagine Megadeth with Ellefson, Mustaine and the Abbots, but I bet it would've been awesome.
Dime was sooo sheltered musically. His brother was nothing without him. Should have joined Mustaine..
It’s a good thing this didn’t happen. The world would have been robbed of Pantera.
@@halColombo his brother was nothing without him? Vinnie Paul was a phenomenal drummer. Dimebag was the more transcendental musician bit don't slander Vinnie Paul's legacy like that.

Gojira next! Flying whales would be a great song for this.
Nothing Is Sacred any Gojira song could easily and reasonably have a 30-40 minute video
Oroboros would also be great
I second that.
How do I double like
Totally :D
Whoa, Dimebag had the bending technique of a refined blues player.
Boutique bending.10/10 would listen again.
Dimebag said his use of Bends comes from his upbringing in Texas and the use of Bends in older Texan western and blues music. He said by using techniques like bending he was keeping it "texas style" even while playing metal.
Julio A. . He was a refined blues player

It's happening!!! The Return Of THE BEARD!!! Amazing video Rick.
why are you the WORST CHANNEL EVER?
@WORST CHANNEL EVER walk on home boy..
@@sundigest1121 🤣
He let the beard grow out because he was going to do a frickin' _Pantera_ song, man.
WORST CHANNEL EVER he just got lazy? That like almost a weeks worth of growth, you dont just forget to shave for an entire week
Listening to Dime solo is like listening to water flow. He loved playing guitar more than just about anything. Miss him.
As a drummer for over 30 years, I've never had any turn to me and say "hey, play the caveman fill!"
This made me all sad for Darrell again. RIP you legend. Also for Eddie, who was so generous towards Darrell. Two legends.
One of the most enjoyable channels on UA-cam, easily. Full of enthusiasm, warmth and knowledge. Thanks Rick.
I've been covering dimebag solos and they're no joke.
The best metal guitarist imo.
I love Dime but his solos are a pain to play. I'm scared to learn the solo to Cemetery Gates.
That solo is so clean and precise, and has so much swing/groove. Dime is a true legend. I honestly think he's UNDERRATED as a solo composer.
Underrated? I don't think so. One of his solos is on Rolling Stone's top greatest solos of all time.
He’s incredible yes but I don’t think he’s underrated. Everyone knows and loves his talent and composition ability
I didn't realize how blessed l was when l used to live in Ft.Worth back in the late 80's, l think l was 21 then. But l just was driving around looking for a bar and stumbled upon Joe's Garage, Pantera on the old sign it read. Im Like "Hell yeah"!!!. Got so drunk and fell backstage with so many ppl back there and no one helped me up except here comes the band and it was Vinnie Paul. "You alright man?" I nodded my head and gave 👍 and a incoherent drunken thanks came out. Great guys.
So, you were early .. “Hell Yeah!” … lol !!
Loving all the metal songs you’re giving justice to - keep it coming!
Rex's bass part in Dime's solo really drives the solo forward. Rex is one of the best doing that.
There are so many great songs pantera made. Another is I'm broken
Pantera is and always will be the best metal group that ever was and what a tragedy it is without Vinnie and Dime here with us.. There music and impression they made on this planet will live on until the end of days.
True! Their .. btw
Please, please, please, PLEASE tell me you're gonna do more 90's metal.
Danzig or Holy Wars or SOMETHING.
Seriously. I LOVE the metal episodes!!!
some Sepultura would be great!
Holy Wars!
Spanish UA-camr ShaunTrack has some metal analysis. Check it.
Anything within the first four albums of Danzig - besides Mother
I agree first four Danzig Album's with the ultimate line up , plenty of cave man drumming for Rick to pull faces too.
Would love to see more metal analyses, starting with Bleed by Meshuggah (Tomas Haake is a maniac), or Flying Whales by Gojira
Bleed is unreal. That would be a long episode!
Nah. Keep doing metal giants only. Megadeth, slayer, Metallica etc.
Yes bleed.
I'm a simple man. I see Pantera, I click
Harvest by Opeth would fit perfectly in one of these videos, I'm sure.
Bleak
I mentioned Harvest because it's the most accesible from the album and it still is a great song with lots of things to analyze. But yes, Bleak too, as well as every song from Blackwater Park.
@@TROONTLEX The Drapery Falls might be even more interesting perhaps, since it has the acoustic parts, riffs, e-bow leads etc.
I know, but that's 10 minutes long and that's a lot of time when you have to stop every 10 seconds to admire what's happening.
Something off Damnation perhaps?
“Only an original… deserves an original.” Ooph… that was a gut-shot 🥹🫡🤘
That solo by itself is spine-tingling..... RIP
While you’re at it, you should do an interview with producer Terry Date- and discuss his involvement with the heaviest and most sonically punishing album of all time-Far Beyond Driven
We really need a Black Sabbath WMTSG soon!
He said in his best 20 intro vid he cannot even mentioned the name of this band for copyright issue. So a whole video is not likely.
I love this guy, his love of music is infectious
Life has got in the way for 25 years. Finally I go get to see my favorite band Pantera in nashville. Can't wait to see you soon Rex.keep rocking
Best Dime/Vinnie guitar/drum work combo ever is _Regular People_
Excellent song!
Love this song. I remember the first time I heard Pantera, it was this album that I got in the mail (thanks Columbia House monthly suggestion!). When I got to Regular People it was literally like nothing I had ever heard before and I was hooked.
@@IlliniDog01 i got my copy from columbia house too lol! The ol' get 10 free and then buy 6 more @ $45 each scam...
Not really a fan of Eddie Van Halen but what a legend for giving up his own guitar for Dime 🤟😀🤟
I couldn't have stated my exact feelings any better
Why wouldn't one like EVH? He seems like a cool dude. Just with some issues lol.
Yep. 100% agree. My mouth was literally fl00red as I learned this mystical information.
I am sure they’re putting that guitar tongood use and jamming up in heaven now.
I never thought a video about Pantera would make a man cry.
Did work experience in a record store as a high school kid, they weren’t allowed to pay me, but allowed me to choose an album for free - chose the new release of Vulgar after hearing the first 2seconds of it. Loved it ever since. What quality musicians! Great album.
Saw Pantera in Dallas in...'96? White Zombie opened. Most brutal pit I ever experienced! Left with a giant boot-print across my face!
That sounds about right! Love that!
How can’t you mention Rexs playing during the guitar solo? It compliments the solo tastefully it would not work without it.
The drums are so lyrical and powerful. You can hear the guitars playing in your head even with the soloed drums.
I am here for the airdrumming 4:20 xD
Dude! The ending! Vinnies rocking/Swaying drumming in the outro! It's the cherry on top of the icing of the cake bro!
Agreed. I was disappointed we didn't get a break down......of the breakdown.
Oh yea.. As a drummer that's my favorite part of the song.
I thought for sure Rick would do that outro RiFF so Metal!
Yup! Best riff of the song. Especially the way they do it live.i wish he had done any song other than this one tho. It's probably the simplest, most basic song they have, excluding that solo of course
Every pantera live show just blows my mind how tight, flawless and energetic their playing was from start to finish
Navid Khan Those guys were on point every time. One of the sharpest bands ever.
Forgot how out of this world the guitar solo on this is.
*NEVER* stop this series. Please.
Darrell's solos are so creative! Wow!
Mr. Beato thank you for isolated Dimebag solo \m/ \m/ RESPECT :D
I love Pantera... This song is just SO GOOD!
I always fall back on Pantera, so much power in their music, can’t be beat!!
I had to pause everything else in my life when I saw that you released one of these for a Pantera song
RIP Dime. Respect Rick, great stuff as always; you sir, are a gent.

Walter T we'll leave the last name at that was the yellow black stripped guitar incidence. The guitar was a Kramer. It was broken on stage many times and was rebuilt with dowels and pins.
THNX!!
They already had their own houses then. They haven't lived at the mom's since pre CFH days.
@@nowimhigh Sorry I was there CFH had been out for years and Vinnie told me they were living there, he had a video security system installed for his Mom. There's a video here that has Vin on Head Bangers Ball giving a tour of his Mom's house B4 he had his house built 2 or 3 albums after CFH.

Dime and vinnie was like a well oiled machine many many hours playing together no doubt. Greatness like this isn’t exactly built overnight add Phil to the mix and yikes. Those brothers ate and slept metal and music. Phil’s voice was absolutely amazing for this type of music.
That final riff always does the job. Possibly the best riff of the song.
One of my all time favorite songs!!!!!
Oh dude... my favourite part of his solo is where he "Echo's " from the 2nd fret to the fourteenth on the B string and then goes into his next pattern. I remember reading a Guitar World interview with him and he seemed like the most humblest of people. Stories of him giving his guitars away to people who were down on their luck. What a dude... what a band. He said in the same interview that he had a guitar in every room of his house including the bathroom. Legend.
Sometimes you gotta play and poo. Inspiration comes anywhere, anytime, from anyone.
I'm 48 now ,but this is still awesome.
