When they released the Songs For Lovers (which was a side project by Henrik and Aron during the pandemic, as someone else already stated), they had a live Q&A on insta, and said that it was a hassle to restore and clean up their rehearsal space after filming this, so I'm pretty sure that's where they filmed this. And as a former IKEA employee, I recognise all their stuff (sofa, lamps, curtains/fabric to cover the walls) from IKEA. True Swedes, these guys. 😂

So, True Temperament Frets was invented by a Swedish guy, Anders Thidell, who sadly died 2 years ago. Guitarists like Steve Vai, Steve Lukather and others have used them as well. They’re said to improve the intonated positions - whatever that means 😁
Fun fact - when I first heard Dirty Loops covers some 12-13 years ago I thought they were foreign. Until I discovered Jonah and Henrik lives just a few hundred meters from me here in Stockholm. And as if that wasn’t all, Anders Thidell had his shop on my street just 50 meters away from my apt. I noted whenever I walked by him working in there with all the strange looking guitars in the window and photos of guitarists playing guitars with TT frets.
Now: next song you should do is Hit Me from 2014. Absolutely. It’s a gem from their first album Loopified. To understand that they haven’t done anything bad or boring since they started.

Equal Temperament is what we're used to as modern musicians. It means that the distance between notes is consistent regardless of the scale, and is a compromise in tonality in order for us to be able to shift from one key center to another without having tuning issues, and it's a small enough shift that it's not that noticeable.
In a pair of perfect scales, however, the distance between two of what we see as the same notes is not identical. For example, the distance between C and G in the key of C (the 1 and the 5) will be slightly different than the distance between C and G in the pure key of, say, G (the 4 and the 1). (This is way oversimplified and an audio engineer would probably be justified beating me over the head with a TT fretboard, but...)
On a True Temperament fretboard, these tonal differences are close to perfect, for the scale it's designed for. Honestly, it sounds incredibly clean, but only for the scale it's designed to and only if all instruments are in true temperament. Outside that scale, however, it's going to sound noticeably off.
@@chrishemming2595so interesting! Dumb question: how does it translate to say, a piano? Is it just because of the construction of a guitar/bass or is temperament an issue with a piano as well?
I spend six years in the same music elementary school as Jonah and Henrik but it was all about choir singing and composing, equal temperament never came up 😁

Intonation is such a volatile issue, the Theory of Relativity is nothing compared to it ;)
As Chris said, one note can vary quite a bit, depending on its context.
With the piano it has been leveled out into 12 equal semitone steps, just to make it workable.
So for me, as a string player, when playing with a pianist, I have to constantly adapt my intonation to the pianos intonation, and feels really like a big compromise. But I think, as long as one plays with other people, in most combinations, one has to compromise. And even wishing the violinist’s solo program, say Bach solo Sonatas etc., there are different ways, and much debate about, how intonation is being felt and expressed. It seems a highly individual issue, to a degree.
I am curious how you, as someone mainly trained in singing, would’ve approached this in choir singing.
And again, it probably would’ve depended on whether your choir was accompanied by an organ or orchestra, or not…
It would be fascinating to hear Jonah’s thoughts on that, seeing that he’s written and arranged so many vocal multi-layered parts.

Those are tempered tuning frets for absolutely perfect intonation.
Songs For Lovers is the side project that Aron and Henrik did while Jonah was recording his solo album. One of Jonah's songs was called Coffee Break, so this song was a bit of a response to that (and Jonah sat in for it).
This was a real treat to watch live.
Aron's subdividing is spot on.
It’s called “True Temperament fretting”. You can get on a guitar as well. Supposed to get the best possible intonation.

"Automatic," a cover of a Japanese hit song, contains obvious game sounds, which is a big treat for Japanese people in particular. It's a fun performance by masters of transcendent technique and musicality.

I'm American & learned about them several years ago from my Norwegian friend (who now lives in America). She sent me a text message of "Hit Me" & I've been jaw-dropped by them ever since. I replied to her text with something like. "Oh my God, What Is This?! Are you trying to give me a freaking heart attack?!"

And intonation issues on any string instrument, it’s the bane of a string player’s existence. Henrik’s True Temperament-fretted Mattisson bass is a neat way to resolve some of them.
Others have explained it, so just briefly: the higher you get on the fretboard, the more pronounced the inherent ‘out-of-tuneness’ becomes, if you’d just use ordinary, straight frets. Hence the increase in adjusted fret configuration up there….
Henrik’s said in an interview that it’s not perfect, but still better, in terms of intonation, than any of the other basses he uses.
And him sitting on his case, might have to do with the fact that he’s relatively small, at least compared to Jonah ;) just guessing.
All four tracks from the Songs For Lovers series are bonus tracks on their Japanese edition of Phoenix, their second album.
Someone gave it to me recently, and it’s on rotation in my car…. ✌️✌️✌️

Well, this song should be in super mario kart or something like that :D About the frets, he talks about it in an interview. His bass is tuned for a specific scale and he had the frets modified so that all the notes sound in tune. (I forgot which scale).
Yes there are guitars/basses with frets like that (look crooked, not "straight lines") I think it's to get perfect intonation or something like that.

Henrik's frets are tempered. The details of the effect are above my pay grade, but I think it's supposed to make the bass sound better in certain keys (and probably worse in others).
It's supposed to make any instrument sound better in a particular key. As a bass player, I can say that there's many times that I think I sound out of tune, but it's just because of equal temperament tuning.

When the frets are constructed like that, it provides more accurate tuning. The fretboard has many weak points, and the way this is set up. It takes out the bad tuning spot basically.
Songs for Lovers Is a sideprojekt. Jonas is usually not part of it. Remember Sweden chose very different strategies during c o vi d.

Songs for lovers is a 'sideproject' from Aron and Henrik. You can check out Bitten by the Kitten, Pink power and Old Armando had a farm. ( This song is the only one with Jonah in it). I think its recorded in Aron's studio (?). Love your reactions!!!

First: This is not Dirty Loops-music. It’s Aron and Henrik’s musical side project - here with Jonas as a guest. Other ‘Song for lovers’-song are often just Aron and Henrik.
Second: None of their songs are recorded live in the music videos. It just seems like that, because they are so good at playing along to their pre-recorded track.
The bass frets are curvy because it’s supposed to make each tone more in tune, in the same way that a piano, which can play in every key, is slightly out of tune. If you want a piano totally in tune, you’ll need 12 of them - one for each key. Jacob Collier, who has perfect pitch, has some small UA-cams about it.
Considering they posted the videos on the official Dirty Loops channel and social media accounts, included all four Songs for Lovers on the Japanese edition of the Phoenix EP, and are using some of the songs in their live shows, I think it's pretty safe to say they're counting it as Dirty Loops material anyway. :)

as someone who likes metal and a Christian, you NEED to do Theocracy. Laying the Demon to Rest is probably their heaviest, (it's power metal, so not THAT heavy still), As the World Bleeds is a great one too, Mirror of Souls is a MUST but it's a looong one, lastly The Gift of Music is one that will resonate with you on a level beyond what it does for most (it's great, but Christian musicians tend to be moved by it more than most)

@@teckreactions not sure how well it would do so no clue if it's good for the channel but easily their best song IMO is "I Am". It's roughly 10 min and every line starts with "I am____". Super dense song on theology which is why I'm not sure if it would do well on the channel. Not so much because it's Christian, but because to talk about the song in the context of a video like that you have to do more or less a full Bible study.
