Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by going backwards. Don't mean a left handed version? If so, I have already published a left handed version of this tutorial and you can find it on my channel. :-)

So when the pattern says to slip stitch then chain one, you're skipping the chain?

That's correct. You don't need to chain one and will simple single crochet into the first stitch straight away.
