  • 8mm cine film shot by me showing class K1 2-6-0s from Alnmouth shed on passenger services to Alnwick in 1966.
The first filming visit was in February during a heavy snow storm and includes the short run up to Alnwick when the K1 shunts the goods yard .
(I had been to Alnwick in 1965 with armed with just a reel to reel tape recorder and had the privilege of a footplate trip at the invitation of the driver!)
Just one week later the snow has gone completely and it was possible to take more trackside shots including on Cawledge viaduct.
My third and final visit was on 28th May with more filming done at or near Alnmouth.
The video has an authentic soundtrack recorded by me mostly at the time of filming.

Nice to watch thank you. Well done Barbara Castle - another of your negligent, know-nowt closures.

Fantastic video of K1's at work. They were very good workhorses . 62005 was used in the 1950's for Saturday trains from York to Blackpool in the summer season.

By coincidence, there is an excellent feature on this very line in the latest (June) Steam Days magazine.
Thanks for sharing this excellent video.

I love steam engines and I think this is a cracking video. I never knew the line but I have always thought Alnmouth and Alnwick had great model railway possibilities. It is a pity it was not preserved in total but I wish the best to the preservation group. Thank you for letting us see the video.

Very versatile locos indeed! I did "tape" this and the Catterick Camp branch behind/on a 'K1' not long before closure and later volunteered to be Track Engineer afterwards (no joy there though and a very longgg way from Colchester...) Still, I did get a free pie-and-peas lunch that day.) Am amazed re this loco in use from York towards Blackpool. Any ideas where engine change was made???

4m28s Branch End Cottages, where mu Aunt Ally (Alice) lived for some years after my Uncle Jakey Field, was killed by a lump of coal at Alnmouth Station.
And another view at 10m14. To get to the cottages you walked off the end of the platform, round the back of the signal box and along the cinder path beside the up siding to a foot crossing going over the siding and main line and into the gardens of the cottages.

      Hello,
Thanks for the information about those cottages.
Given the location and access route I would think that these
were built by the railway company for it's employees.
I have not been back to Alnmouth station since the film was shot in 1966. I imagine that the cottages are no longer there.
      Peter.

The Aln Valley Railway have rebuilt just over 1 1/2 miles of the branch, from the outskirts of Alnwick, over the viaduct to a temporary halt at Greenrigg. Planning for the next 1 1/2 miles to Alnmouth is well advanced.
Steam and diesel trains run every weekend throughout the summer.

Good video, but not a trainspotters paradise with only 2 steam engines doing everything.
