My grandfather was born in Walton in 1895; his family left Roane County in 1905 after his father died in 1902 and his youngest siblings both died a year later. They settled in a new town called Estacada in Oregon in 1906 the year after it was founded. I was born there in 1949, raised in Portland, and now live near Salem. Photographs of the hills of West Virginia look very much like western Oregon except the trees here are much larger and the rivers are cold, fast, clear and big. McKown Creek, south of Walton, was named after another of my relatives.
This is a well-made video. I have many good memories of my home county and home state of Roane County, West Virginia. I left a long time ago, as a young teenager in the very early 80s. And eventually moved out of state for work. However, at night, most nights, for decades, my dreams have taken me back there. And I will return to beautiful Roane County, West Virginia some day.

Roane County is not a common county name. We have one here in TN, named after Archibald Roane, our 2nd governor. Just curious for whom the W. Va. county is named. Enjoy all your videos.
This is a county I wouldn’t advise visiting. You’ll meet the most ignorant people, most corrupt police, and worst economy that can be. I grew up here, and I’d never go back.💯

I blame my chronic depression on growing up in Roane Co. No jobs and poor education - Poverty and corruption - Wellfare checks, drugs and alcoholism; These are the realities. I hate seeing people romanticize that hellhole.
