I have some advice you may want to pin to the top for others. I just did a reseal on a 20 gallon long on Monday it is now Thursday and the silicone is still tacky and smells like vinegar. I bought the GE Silicone 1 at my local Orange Big Box store, while at the store I did not think to check the date on the tube, nor did I think to check the date on the tube when I did the job. The date on the tube was from 2017 and it is 2021. Well after Googling if silicone expires apparently it does, this I did not know, and apparently the orange Big Box store had no idea either. So lesson learned , I'll have to take it out and redo it.
I just decided to post an update to this, the Ge1 silicone that was expired did eventually cure, and the tank is full and holding water with fish in it, but it took three weeks to fully cure. So watch those expiration dates.
Awesome video! I was given a 33 gallon and after filling it I discovered it leaked. So now I'm resealing my first aquarium. I watched a bunch of other videos but yours has by far been the best and most thorough. I really appreciate the example on the pieces of wood. Thank you for making this!
Your welcome, I had watched a bunch of videos when I was learning how to first reseal aquariums and nobody actually showed how to make the seal so I felt like it was a pretty important part to add!
Great video. Going to reseal an old 140 gallon that I just bought. One tip for your viewers is to be careful using strong off-gassing compounds like the ones used in this video in the presence of a currently running tank. The oxygen exchange of the tank will pull those chemicals into the water and if you have more sensitive fish or corals, they can die. Thanks again for the video!
Thanks for taking the time, being so thorough and going slowly, step by step, explaining what and why for each step. I’ll be working on resealing a 20 gallon. Hopefully I’ll have beginners luck and it’ll all work out with good results. Thanks again!
Thank you for your very detailed and instructional Video. Your video is truly helping me. I am currently resealing my first 75 gallon tank and I am taking my time and being methodical. Your close up shots is helping me through my resealing project . Example at 4:57 of the video where the tip of your blade barely touch or cut through the seam of the two panels, explaining not to go any further. I had to come back to this segment when I removed the first silicone layer. At this point, I noticed in my scrap that the side panel was beveled and silicone was in the beveled crevice. I didn't know what to do but I remember your point at 4:57 and I went back and stopped the presentation and looked at your corner tip of your blade which was close to the seam. I simulated the same affect on my scrap and I determined the silicone on the bevel could be removed as long as I didn't go into the seam. I hope when I am done this will be my first successful reseal. Thanks again for being informative.
Watching your video gave me the confidence to tackle resealing a used 100 gallon tank I purchased. The video was very informative. I learn things best by watching others and this video showed me all the steps needed in detail to complete my project. I especially liked the wood block example. Thanks for making such a great video!
Perfect video. I just stripped the silicone out of my corner 55 for the second time because my husband put soo much on the tank the first time around, it was a mess and started setting before he could even get smooth it out. So, 5 out 5 on this one for showing the exact amount to bead into the corners thanks!
Hate to say this but you'll probably have to redo it again .The reason I say that is because old sealant and new silicone don't bond well with each other . The best way to do it us to totally disassemble it,strip all the old silicone and use something like acetone to remove any old residue and then reassemble it making sure to get it between the glass panes where they meet at . I've rebuilt plenty of aquariums and made custom tanks and I can tell you from experience that this is the only way to be absolutely sure it won't fail . Obviously it's a pain to have to do this but then again having to break down your fish tank in a hurry and cleaning up the mess or having water damage to the house isn't much fun either . I hope it works out for you and that you don't have to go through that . Been there done that before .✌️
Bro, the fact that you did the close-up with the pieces of wood was awesome. Front start to finish, this was really awesome for someone who's never done this before.

Well I am glad I found this, because I just bought a used 120 gallon fish tank and was told it didn't leak when they took it down. However it does leak some so I am going to go ahead and reseal it as I had planned to from the beginning. This video has helped me with some of my fears about doing it. No way could I pass up on a 120gal tank for $100.
Smart to be careful of the odor and fumes for you, wife and your daughter. If doing it inside your home instead of in a cold garage in February, you could cover the tank with a sheet after you're done to keep fumes inside the tank and not in the room. Thanks
I do actually cover them from the fumes with a towel, for the first day if the tank has to stay inside to midigate the smell. On the 150 gal I just did i covered it with 4 towels. Works out well. I appreciate your concern though :)
Very well done and very easy to follow along, thank you. Just a little concerned, since I’m 71 having to take off the stand to dry outside or back into the garage. It’s fall here so its only in the 60’s and as low as 40’s at night ,will it still cure ? Thanks again😊
Have you ever done a full rebuild of a 100 gal or more before? I really would like to see how you do one. Still no leaks on my 180 but you never know when it will come to it. Thanks in advance
5:00 im a little conflicted, i got a 75 gallon so the tank is a little thicker glass, but when i went do to do the reseals i did get a little bit past the the seam in 1-2 places, maybe a cm long, however, id say its no deeper then 2-3mm for sure did not go through the seem, just went past it slightly on some of the lower portions. it very much would be water tight once i reseal it. im mostly concerned about strength of it lasting.? watcha think
Just bought a 90 gallon, stand, filter and more through an auction. Saved a bundle, however due to covid I could only see pictures a head of time. Picked it up tonight and have spent the evening watching videos on resealing. It’s in rough shape, your video by far has been the most informative and I will be watching aging once I get supplies. The bottom black rim has also come unattached, do I use silicone with that or would you have other suggestions? I know that glass tanks depend on it for support. Thanks for your video and time.
Try to remove as much silicone as you can from the frame and then you can simply reattach it with new silicone and it should be good to go after a reseal!
@@TrafishAquatics Thank you very much for the quick reply. I live in Ontario, Canada and right now it is around -5*c during the day. Should I do all of my cure time inside?
I yet to find a video that shows how to re-seal a tank with corner overflows . do you remove the overtflows reseal the tank and then silicone the overflows in ... thanks
Yep that's exactly how you do it, Just make sure you put the corner overflows in place while the silicone is still wet, That way it gets good adhesion at the base
In the process of redoing my 90 gallon, and getting massive backlash from all of the old schoolers, saying it’s an accident waiting to happen if I don’t pull the panels apart and redo them as well. I’m so confused. Got the old seal removed, cleaned with acetone and taped it to make nice clean lines. Now I’m spooked and thinking my tank needs to be scrapped(I don’t have the space to pull the panels apart,or the time).
Hi. Very informative video. I just did this but I used too much silicone and the end result was not smooth at all. Now i don't mind it looks like crap but do you think it will still work if it's"bumpy"? I'm incredibly nervous. The floor is wooden so if it leaks it will be hell. I'm honestly thinking maybe i should just buy a new one.
Hey buddy! Very detailed video, thanks. I have a 90 gallon that spent a year outside in a shed. The seals are peeling back but I’m worried the silicone between the glass is shot. It gets to 120+ here in Arizona so not sure if simply resealing would be enough. What are your thoughts
Silicone is pretty resiliant stuff, the silicone between the glass is more protected between the glass than the seals are, chances are theyre fine, if you start seeing any air bubbles appear in the seams while the tank is full thats a sign that the silicone is letting go, my 300 was in my garage for almost 2 years through -10 winters and 110 summers and i simply resealed with no issues
Hello there ! Here from Louisiana ! If I bought a used tank and didn’t test it out yet, could I seal over existing seal with out removing any seal there? Thanks for your cool videos !
Great vid and explanation. I had no idea there was size marking on the tip of the tube. You said 3/8th but no marking for that size. Did you mean 3/16th? To me that seems like too small of a size for a 55g tank. I did like how you didn't have to tape up the bottom panel of the tank. Idk why I never did that. Makes sense of not needing to do the bottom because substrate covers it.
Thank you, the tube did have the 3/8 mark on it but on other tubes I purchased it didn't always have all the marking on them, just get it close to the 3/8 mark and you'll be ok!
I am in the process of cleaning off all silicone to apply new seals. The tank was not leaking but the glass brace across the top of my 120 gal had removed from one side. So questions. I have completely scraped and cleaned the whole tank and the three glass braces that go across the top. Do I starts at the bottom come up the sides and then glue the glass braces down? Or glue them down first and then do the seams? Also I seams that with a tank as big as mine that I may have to smooth the silicone as I go?
Do the inside of the tank first and then do the braces at the end that way they arent in your way, you should have enough working time to lay all the silicone in and then go back and smooth it out, i did on my 150 gallon.
Is it necessary to go through this process and reseal if the tank wasn't actively leaking when it was full? I only noticed after taking it outside to Clean it and leaned it to the side, the water dripped from the black edges in the corner... But when flat, no leak. ?? Confused and need advice
I would reseal, the lean is causing excess pressure on the silicone and pulled it apart, when it is flat the silicone was squeezed again keeping the water in for now
I have a 55 gallon corner tank that sprung a leak last night and I do not know where the issue is. I have removed the fish and drained the tank, but how can I find where the leak is coming from? Will this reseal also work for the tank?
@@TrafishAquatics sorry to bother you but I cannot find any advice on what to do. I began the process to reseal the aquarium last night. However, after going over everything with a brand new blade I still cannot get this silicone to peel off. I'm afraid of using too much acetone and damaging the seal between the panes. Is there anything else I can use to get this old silicone off? Someone clearly resealed it once and did not do a good job. Any advice is appreciated!
Is it just the silicone residue or is it the actual silicone seal that you are having trouble with? If it's residue you can use some 220 grit sandpaper to get the leftover residue, it won't affect the new silicones ability to adhere to the glass
@@TrafishAquatics Unfortunately it's the actual silicone. Everytime I peel it comes off in tiny chunks it seems like it is really old silicone. It's really frustrating, I'll be working on it again tomorrow.

The example given at 23 minutes is great!
Well done I found you vidio excellent 👏
Great video, my friend is giving me a 55 but I have no idea how old it it so I may as well get on it!
For sure! Any questions just let me know
Excellent tutorial and instruction!
Thank you
Excelente tutorial
Thanks! This video tutorial really helped!
Your welcome
Very helpful, much appreciated sir. Saved many fishes lives. UC Davis supports this message.
an excellent presentation! TY
So just use regular nail polish remover?
Thanks for sharing
Excellent presentation
Thank you!
Brilliant video. Thank you 👍
You're quite welcome!
Good job big bro very helpful
It was very helpful and I'm doing my first tank resealing it on my own and I'm 66 ( Woman ) I'll let you know how it goes thanks
Best of luck
excellent job bro
Thank you
Super cool ty
Very clear and detailed! Thank You
You're welcome!
Very well done and very easy to follow along, thank you. Just a little concerned, since I’m 71 having to take off the stand to dry outside or back into the garage. It’s fall here so its only in the 60’s and as low as 40’s at night ,will it still cure ? Thanks again😊
nicely demonstrated
Thank you
Thank you so much for your informative video
Your welcome!
Bonjour.cool la vidéo.doit on enlever le cerclage en plastique en haut, pour faire 1 joint ? merci
Bro!!! Thanks for this video just got a free tank from a friend and it has a leak
Love The AR at 19.50 in the corner
I know it looks like an AR but it is actually a bolt action rifle that I built from the ground up chambered in 7.62x54. 😁
Any updates on the tank? Am thinking about doing the same for my 55gallons remove the trims
Every time you reach for that acetone on top of the fishtank in the back, I cringe, fearing you'll accidentally dump it onto/into that tank.
I'm extra careful when I put stuff on top of my tanks, I don't want to knock it in either lol
VERY INFORMATIVE THANKS BRO
How to do the bottom?
It would most likely be fine
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome
Yes I would, try to do it in a room that has descent ventilation or fans, when the silicone begins to cure the smell is quite strong
Perfect video.... Thank you👍👍
You're welcome
I yet to find a video that shows how to re-seal a tank with corner overflows . do you remove the overtflows reseal the tank and then silicone the overflows in ... thanks
Yep that's exactly how you do it, Just make sure you put the corner overflows in place while the silicone is still wet, That way it gets good adhesion at the base
What happens if I accidentally went too far with the razor in a couple spots. Is my tank ruined? 😩
Just a little bit will probably be ok
Now is that acetone going to stay in seams and saw that you set the bottle on top of your other tank .
Any updates on the tank?
Should still work fine, if your worried you can leak test it outside
@@TrafishAquatics thanks for the information. I figured it was fine but wasn’t sure
Hello there ! Here from Louisiana ! If I bought a used tank and didn’t test it out yet, could I seal over existing seal with out removing any seal there?
Thanks for your cool videos !
Unfortunately no, new silicone won't adhere to old silicone, you have to remove all the old and put all new silicone for the best results
Is it 24 hours or 48 hours for the silicone to dry?
@@TrafishAquatics thank you for answering. I wasn't sure what to do and that helps tremendously!
Thanks
Is it necessary to go through this process and reseal if the tank wasn't actively leaking when it was full? I only noticed after taking it outside to Clean it and leaned it to the side, the water dripped from the black edges in the corner... But when flat, no leak. ?? Confused and need advice
I would reseal, the lean is causing excess pressure on the silicone and pulled it apart, when it is flat the silicone was squeezed again keeping the water in for now
Thanks for your video - I have a 250 liter (approx 65 galons) that i leaking - This already helped me. So hope it will be working. :-)
Glad it was helpful!
I have a 55 gallon corner tank that sprung a leak last night and I do not know where the issue is. I have removed the fish and drained the tank, but how can I find where the leak is coming from? Will this reseal also work for the tank?
Yes repairing that tank in the same manner as this should fix that no problem
Thank you. Is the GE1 suitable for this style of a tank
Yes that would work fine for that size
Thank you very much
Your welcome
Thanks this helped me a lot. Is one tube of silicone enough for a 75? I bought the supplies today and I just realized I didn't consider this.
Yes it should be fine
You may have to use a few razorblades, if they get full they won't hardly cut anything
